In recent years, the landscape of sex education in schools has shifted dramatically. During the course, she was shocked by the graphic sexual content, which she found deeply inappropriate for the target age group. Mary, now advocating for change, has voiced her concerns publicly, sparking widespread debate.

 

 

Why Did She Speak Out?

Mary felt compelled to speak out due to the nature of the content introduced in the training. The course covered topics such as masturbation, various sexual acts, and even arts-and-crafts activities intended to familiarize children with human genitalia. Many parents would find these topics unsuitable for children as young as 12, and Mary believes this content goes far beyond what most adults would comfortably discuss with their peers, let alone with children.

Moreover, these lessons come with approved materials, including cartoon videos and sexual position guides that aim to “broaden” children’s understanding. Mary’s concerns are shared by numerous parents and educators who feel that this approach is not only inappropriate but could be harmful to young minds. The Wider Controversy Around the SPHE Curriculum

Mary’s concerns are echoed by groups of parents and educators who are troubled by the introduction of gender ideology and other controversial topics into the curriculum. The curriculum review, which began in 2018, aimed to modernize sex education by incorporating discussions on consent, pornography, and LGBTQ+ identities. However, some groups, including the Parent’s Rights Alliance and the Irish Education Alliance, argue that the inclusion of these topics could confuse children and potentially lead to psychological harm. They have urged schools to opt out of these programs and encouraged parents to voice their concerns (Gript, 2023).

 

According to critics, the curriculum teaches gender ideology as fact, suggesting that children as young as 12 should question their gender identity. This approach has been described as confusing and potentially damaging to children, particularly those struggling with body image or puberty-related challenges (People Before Profit, 2023).

 

Is there now a Political Agenda in the Classroom?

Another alarming aspect of the Mary’s testimony is the suggestion of a political agenda being pushed through the new curriculum. The training referenced the teachings from the likes of Paulo Freire, a Marxist educator who believed in the integration of politics and education. This philosophy underpins much of the new curriculum, raising concerns about whether students are being taught to think critically, or simply being indoctrinated into a particular worldview. This is disturbing.

Furthermore, if teachers refuse to teach this content, external organizations with strong ideological leanings—such as Trans Equality Network Ireland—may be brought into schools to deliver the lessons. This further exacerbates the issue, as it introduces potentially biased, external perspectives into the classroom. We have already seen how the UK is rolling back on such initiatives, which they now acknowledge were ill informed and detrimental to children.

 

So what Can Parents Do?

Parents must become proactive in protecting their children from these concerning developments.

 

Stay Informed: Ask your child’s school about the sex education curriculum. Request access to materials and inquire about how controversial topics are being handled.

Advocate for Your Child: If you disagree with the content being taught, express your concerns to the school administration. Find out about your rights to opt your child out of specific lessons or subjects.

Join Forces: Work with other concerned parents to raise awareness about these issues. Together, you can advocate for transparency and accountability in your local schools.
