Bumble is an online dating platform designed to help adults meet and communicate with new people. Like other dating services, it can create opportunities for genuine connections. However, users are still communicating with people whose identity, intentions and circumstances may initially be difficult to verify.

Bumble provides several safety and privacy features intended to reduce these risks. These include profile verification, ID verification, tools to detect potentially fraudulent accounts, controls for unwanted images, in app calling, date sharing and reporting tools. Bumble Age Requirement

Bumble is an adult dating service. Bumble requires users to be at least 18 years old to create an account. Bumble may ask users to verify their age or identity. Its Community Guidelines also allow the company to block accounts belonging to people under 18. Bumble

Bumble currently offers ID Verification in Ireland. However, this does not mean that every Irish user must complete the process. Bumble may require additional verification in specific circumstances or when legal requirements apply. Bumble

Quick Safety Overview

Bumble includes several tools that can help users make more informed decisions before communicating with or meeting another person.

Photo Verification compares a selfie with photographs on the user’s profile.

ID Verification can confirm identity and age using an accepted government issued identification document.

Private Detector automatically blurs images that Bumble identifies as potentially explicit.

Deception Detector uses AI to identify some fake, scam and spam accounts.

In App Voice and Video Calls allow users to communicate without immediately giving another person their telephone number.

Share Date allows details of a planned meeting to be shared with a trusted person.

Block and Report allows users to stop contact and report behaviour that causes concern.

Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Photo Verification

Bumble Photo Verification is intended to help determine whether the person operating an account resembles the photographs shown on that profile.

To complete Photo Verification, open your Bumble profile and select the verification option. Bumble will ask you to take a selfie. Bumble then uses automated systems and human review to compare the selfie with the photographs displayed on your profile. Bumble

Why it matters

Fake profiles and stolen photographs remain a recognised risk on dating platforms. Photo Verification provides an additional indication that the person controlling the account resembles the person presented in the profile.

However, verification does not establish somebody’s intentions, personal history or trustworthiness. Continue to use normal caution even when communicating with a verified account.

ID Verification

Bumble also offers ID Verification. This goes further than Photo Verification because the process uses a government issued identity document to check the user’s age and photograph.

To verify your ID:

  • Open your Bumble profile.
  • Select Edit Profile.
  • Select Get Verified beneath your photographs.
  • Select Get ID Verified.
  • Follow the instructions and provide an accepted government issued identification document.
  • Complete the live selfie check.

Bumble states that accepted documents can include a passport, driving licence, residence permit or another government issued ID containing a photograph and date of birth. Bumble

Bumble uses Veriff as an external provider for ID Verification. Bumble states that users can request manual review if they do not want facial recognition technology used during this process. Bumble

Why it matters

ID Verification gives users another piece of information when assessing a profile. However, an ID verified account should still not be treated as a guarantee that a person will behave honestly or safely.

Deception Detector

Bumble uses an AI based system called Deception Detector to help identify fake, spam and scam accounts.

The system operates in the background and examines signals associated with potentially deceptive accounts. Bumble says accounts identified as suspicious may be blocked automatically, asked to verify their identity or referred for further review. Bumble

Why it matters

Automated scam detection can help remove suspicious accounts before users encounter them. However, no detection system will identify every scammer.

Users should therefore continue to pay attention to unusual behaviour, inconsistencies, requests for money and attempts to rapidly move conversations away from Bumble.

Private Detector

Bumble’s Private Detector is designed to reduce exposure to unwanted explicit images.

When the system identifies an image that may contain nudity, the image is automatically blurred. The recipient can then decide whether they want to view it. Users can also report inappropriate images to Bumble. Bumble

Why it matters

Unwanted sexual images can be distressing and may form part of harassment, coercion or sexualised manipulation. Automatic blurring gives the recipient greater control over whether they see potentially explicit material.

If an image is unwanted or makes you uncomfortable, consider reporting the sender rather than engaging further.

Review Before You Send

Bumble uses Review Before You Send to identify messages that may contain harmful, offensive or inappropriate language.

If the system flags a message, Bumble may ask the sender to review or change it before sending. In some circumstances, a message that clearly violates Bumble’s rules must be edited before it can be sent. Bumble Support

Why it matters

Online communication can escalate quickly. Prompts that interrupt potentially abusive or aggressive messages may encourage users to reconsider what they are sending.

However, automated moderation should not replace reporting. If another user repeatedly sends threatening, abusive, discriminatory or sexualised messages, use Bumble’s reporting tools.

In App Voice and Video Calls

Bumble allows matches to make voice and video calls from inside the platform. This means you can speak to another person without immediately providing your personal telephone number or moving the conversation to another messaging service. Bumble Safety Centre

Why it matters

Moving quickly from a dating platform to text messages, WhatsApp or another private service can expose additional personal information.

An in app voice or video call can also provide another opportunity to assess whether the person appears consistent with their profile before arranging an offline meeting.

However, remember that video calls can be recorded. Avoid displaying private information, intimate content, documents or details that could later be used for blackmail or impersonation.

Share Date

Bumble’s Share Date feature allows users to send information about an upcoming date to a trusted friend or family member.

To use Share Date:

  • Open the conversation with your match.
  • Select the three dots in the upper corner.
  • Select Share Date.
  • Enter the planned time, location and details of the person you are meeting.
  • Share the date card with someone you trust.

The trusted person does not need a Bumble account. If plans change, Bumble allows the date information to be updated without sending a completely new link. Bumble Support

Why it matters

Someone you trust should know where you are going and who you intend to meet. Share Date makes this easier, but it should form part of a wider personal safety plan rather than being the only precaution taken.

Block Someone

You can block another Bumble user if you do not want them to contact you.

If you already have a conversation:

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Select the three dots in the upper corner.
  3. Select Block and Report.
  4. Choose whether you also want to submit a report.

If you have not started a conversation, open the person’s profile, select the three dots and choose Block and Report.

Bumble states that blocked users are not notified. Bumble also states that a blocked account cannot later be unblocked. Bumble Support

Why it matters

You do not need to continue communicating with somebody simply because you previously matched with them.

If another person becomes intrusive, aggressive, manipulative or simply makes you uncomfortable, blocking them is an appropriate safety measure.

Report Someone

Bumble allows users to report behaviour that may breach its Community Guidelines.

To report somebody through the app:

  • Open their profile.
  • Scroll to the bottom.
  • Select Report or Block and Report.
  • Select the reason that best describes the issue.
  • Provide additional information where appropriate.

Reports are private. Bumble states that the person being reported is not told who submitted the report. Users can also check the progress of some reports through Bumble’s Help Hub. Bumble Support

In the European Union, Bumble also provides a reporting option for content that users believe may be illegal under EU law. Bumble Support

Why it matters

Reporting does more than stop contact with one person. It can also allow Bumble to investigate an account and potentially take action to protect other users.

Snooze Mode

Bumble’s Snooze Mode allows users to temporarily hide their profile without deleting their existing information, connections or conversations.

To activate it:

  1. Open your profile.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Snooze Mode.
  4. Choose how long you want the profile hidden.

Bumble currently provides options including 24 hours, 72 hours, one week or indefinitely. Existing matches can still be contacted while Snooze Mode is active. Bumble Support

Why it matters

Dating apps can encourage repeated checking, swiping and messaging. Taking a temporary break can be useful if the experience becomes stressful, overwhelming or begins to affect wellbeing.

Incognito Mode

Bumble also offers Incognito Mode to Premium and Premium Plus subscribers.

When Incognito Mode is enabled, your profile is hidden from other users unless you have already indicated that you like them.

To activate it, open your profile, select Settings and switch on Incognito Mode. Bumble

Why it matters

Incognito Mode provides additional control over profile visibility. It may be useful for people who want greater privacy or who are concerned about being seen by colleagues, acquaintances or other people they know.

However, it is a paid feature and should not be treated as a substitute for careful profile privacy choices.

Protect Your Personal Information

Dating profiles can reveal far more information than users realise.

A combination of photographs, occupation, approximate location, hobbies and social media information may allow another person to identify where you live, work or regularly spend time.

Avoid displaying your home address, workplace address, personal email address, financial information, identification documents or passwords.

Also consider the background of photographs. A street sign, workplace logo, vehicle registration, school name or recognisable location can reveal information that was never deliberately added to the profile.

Romance Scams

Romance scams involve building an emotional relationship in order to obtain money, financial information, assets or another advantage.

The scam may develop slowly. The person may initially appear attentive, supportive and emotionally invested. Once trust has developed, a financial emergency, investment opportunity, travel problem or medical crisis may suddenly appear.

Bumble specifically warns users not to send money or financial information to people they have recently met through the platform. It also warns that scammers may attempt to move conversations away from Bumble and use information gathered from social media to make their stories more convincing. Bumble

An Garda Síochána has issued similar warnings in Ireland. Garda advice identifies requests for money, rapid emotional attachment, reluctance to meet, movement away from dating platforms and inconsistent personal stories as common warning signs. Garda

Never send money, cryptocurrency, gift cards or banking information to somebody simply because you have developed an online relationship with them.

AI, Fake Profiles and Deepfakes

Advances in artificial intelligence are making it easier to create convincing photographs, messages, voices and video.

As a result, photographs and even video conversations should no longer be treated as absolute proof of identity.

Bumble uses automated systems including Deception Detector to identify some suspicious accounts. However, users should still assess the overall behaviour of the person they are communicating with. Bumble

Be particularly cautious if someone refuses ordinary verification, repeatedly avoids meeting, provides inconsistent information or combines emotional pressure with requests for money or intimate material.

Sextortion and Intimate Images

Be cautious about sharing intimate images or participating in sexual video calls with somebody you have only met online.

A scammer may record a call, save images or threaten to send material to family, friends or colleagues unless money is paid. Bumble specifically warns about this form of extortion in its romance scam guidance. Bumble

If somebody threatens to share intimate material, do not assume that paying them will make the problem disappear.

In Ireland, sharing or threatening to share intimate images without consent can constitute a criminal offence under Coco’s Law. This protection can also apply to an image that falsely claims to depict another person, including certain deepfake material. Government of Ireland

Preserve relevant messages and evidence. Report the account to Bumble and consider reporting the matter to An Garda Síochána.

Meeting Someone From Bumble

Meeting someone offline introduces risks that cannot be solved by app settings alone.

Arrange the first meeting in a busy public place. Avoid allowing somebody you have never met to collect you from your home.

Tell a trusted person where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to return. Bumble’s Share Date feature can assist with this.

Arrange your own transport where possible. Keep control of your telephone and personal belongings, and avoid becoming dependent on the other person to get home.

Do not feel obliged to remain on a date because somebody has travelled, paid for something or appears disappointed. If you become uncomfortable, you can leave.

If you believe you are in immediate danger, contact the emergency services.

Warning Signs Worth Taking Seriously

Individual warning signs do not automatically mean that somebody is a scammer. However, combinations of unusual behaviour deserve additional caution.

Be particularly careful where someone quickly declares strong feelings, repeatedly avoids meeting, refuses reasonable verification, asks for money, promotes investments, requests banking information or pressures you to move rapidly to another communication service.

Similarly, pressure to provide intimate images, secrecy about the relationship, inconsistent personal information and repeated emergencies requiring financial help should not be ignored.

Slowing the interaction down can be one of the most effective responses to manipulation. Genuine relationships do not require immediate financial decisions or the surrender of personal boundaries.

If Something Goes Wrong

If another Bumble user makes you uncomfortable, use Block and Report.

If you believe you have been the victim of fraud in Ireland, preserve your communications, contact your financial institution where relevant and report the matter to An Garda Síochána. Garda advice specifically encourages victims of romance fraud to report what happened and retain relevant correspondence. Garda

If an intimate image of you has been shared without consent, or somebody is threatening to share one, Irish law provides specific protections. The Department of Justice advises that intimate image abuse can be reported through Hotline.ie and An Garda Síochána. Government of Ireland

Do not delete important messages simply because they are upsetting. Screenshots, account names, telephone numbers, payment details and conversation records may later assist a platform, bank or Garda investigation.

Before relying on a new Bumble connection, consider whether you have completed the following checks.
