Discord Parental Controls & Safety Settings
Why Discord Safety Settings Matter in 2025
Discord offers vibrant communities and direct connections, but it also opens the door to improper content, cyberbullying, and contact with strangers. The latest safety tools—when used together with parental guidance—equip you to build both protection and trust with your child.
Why Parents Should Activate These Settings
Continue being involved because Discord serves diverse groups—some moderated, some not. Children may encounter harmful conversations, graphic media, or unwanted contact. Applying the following tools equips your family to handle these risks while promoting healthier digital habits.
Discord Safety Tools Available
- Family Centre: weekly activity summary (friends, messages, servers)
- Sensitive Media Filters: blur or block explicit and violent images
- Spam Filtering: route DMs from strangers into a separate inbox
- Per-Server DM Controls: disable messaging from server members
- Friend Request Controls: manage who can send friend requests
- Block & Report Users: block individuals and report violations
- Two-Factor Authentication: add a second layer of login security (Highly Recommended)

How to Set Up Discord Safety Settings (2025)
1. Enable Family Centre
- Open User Settings → Family Centre.
- Ask your teen to generate a QR code under their account.
- Scan it from your Discord app; once accepted, you see weekly summaries of their activity (friends added, servers joined, messages and calls)
2. Set Sensitive Media Filters
- Go to User Settings → Privacy & Safety.
- Choose Keep Me Safe.
- Under Content & Social, set filters to blur or block for DMs and channel media. Filters are mandatory by default for teens
3. Enable Spam Filtering
- In Privacy & Safety, set DM Spam Filter to filter messages from non-friends into a spam inbox
4. Manage Server-Based Messaging
- Within Content & Social, navigate to Server Privacy Defaults.
- Disable Allow direct messages from server members to block unknown senders
5. Restrict Friend Requests
- Under Privacy & Safety, choose Friend Request settings.
- Select Friends of Friends or No One to block requests from strangers
6. Block or Report Users
- Right-click a username and choose Block.
- Use the three-dot menu to report harassment or inappropriate content
7. Activate Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- Go to My Account and enable 2FA for secure login.
Building a Healthier Discord Experience
Parent tools create structure, but communication builds resilience. Talk frequently with your child about who they interact with and why these settings matter. Encourage them to leave servers or report users who make them uneasy. This fosters trust and digital literacy.
