HowRUDoinOnline?
Welcome to the #HowRUDoinOnline? initiative.
This is a new concept where we will dive into the intersections of online safety, mental health, and digital well-being. As someone with over eight years of experience in online safety education and a background in policing, cyberpsychology and cybersecurity, I’ve seen first hand how the digital world can both help and harm users young and old.
With technology becoming more intertwined with our daily lives, it’s crucial to ask ourselves this important question – How are we really doing online?
Why even ask HowRUDionOnline?
In the real world when we ask someone how they’re doing in person, it’s a natural and essential part of our daily interactions. However, asking how someone is doing online is just as important, yet always overlooked. In a world where much of our lives are spent online, our digital experiences can have a deep impact on our mental and emotional well-being.
We often forget to check in on how our friends, family, and even ourselves are handling the digital world. But just as we ask “how are you?” in real life, we must also remember to ask “how are you doing online?”
Online interactions can lead to stress, anxiety, and other issues just like offline experiences.
Learning from Our Shared History The Concept Behind HowRUDoinOnline?
Throughout human history, we’ve learned from the mistakes of others. Imagine someone in ancient times, stepping out of a cave and seeing fire for the first time. They might touch or taste it, hurting themselves in the process. But others watching would quickly learn, hay this is something we need to avoid doing ever again.
That same principle also applies to how people interact with online world. Currently we treat the mistakes made in the digital world differently. People falling for scams, oversharing, or encountering harmful content almost never tell others their experiences. This is where we are regressing, rather than evolving as humans to better deal wityh the online world.
By asking how others are doing online, we can learn from these negative experiences and help each other to avoid digital pitfalls. That’s why #HowRUDoingOnline is more than just a question, it’s a way of ensuring we learn from the mistakes of others to better protect ourselves. Also by checking in on the digital health of ourselves and those around us, we end up creating a safer, positive and more supportive online environment.
Why This Matters
In a time when the internet is our primary source of information, connection, and even entertainment, it’s easy to overlook the impact it has on our mental health and safety.
While it offers endless opportunities, it also presents challenges such as cyberbullying, online harassment, disinformation, catfishing, and even worse, online child sexual exploitation and sextortion, to name but a few of the issues we all face online today.
The pressure of social media and maintaining a “perfect” online persona. Risks of falling into dangerous online activities or scams. Increased screen time affecting both mental and physical well-being, the list goes on and on.
This is why I created the #HowRUDoingOnline? initiative. I want to help parents, children, educators, businesses, and individuals navigate the complexities of the digital world.
Together, we can work towards creating safer, healthier online habits that benefit everyone.
