PS3 Safety Settings

Black PlayStation 3 Slim console with a DualShock 3 controller

PS3 is a games console that supports offline games and online play. Children use it for entertainment, challenges and time with friends. These PS3 safety settings help parents manage games, contact, privacy and spending. Work through the controls together and test the account your child uses.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

These PS3 safety settings help parents manage access. They cannot make every game suitable for a child. Ireland’s PlayStation terms allow online accounts from age seven, with a parent or guardian managing players under 18. Other regions have their own terms. Use a true date of birth and check each game’s PEGI rating and content descriptors.

For UK and Irish adult accounts, Sony now requires age verification for certain communication, broadcasting and game features. Available methods include a mobile contract check, facial age estimation or an identity document through Yoti. Read the privacy information before choosing a method. Sony says it receives the result, while Yoti deletes facial geometry after verification. Verification does not confirm that someone is trustworthy. Never verify a child’s account using an adult’s identity.

PS3 Safety Settings and Restrictions

Change the local security password

PS3 uses a local security password for its content restrictions.

  • From the console menu, open Settings → Security Settings → Change Password.
  • Next, enter the existing password. The factory default is 0000 if it has not changed.
  • Finally, enter and confirm a private four digit password. Record it securely away from the console.

Why it matters: The default code is easy to guess. However, this password is not the online account password. Restoring default settings resets it to 0000 and can undo local protection.

Restrict PS3 games

The local game restriction uses control levels rather than a universal age table.

  • Open Settings → Security Settings → Parental Control. Enter the local password when asked.
  • Then, choose a suitable level from 1 to 11. Lower levels are stricter. Avoid Off if restrictions are needed.
  • Review Restrict Starting a Game with No Parental Control Settings if that option is available for your region.
  • Finally, test a permitted game and a game that should be blocked. Check the packaging rating and supervise unrated titles.

Why it matters: A rating limit can reduce access to mature games. Ratings differ by region and title. A game without the relevant parental information may not be restricted as expected. This control does not block every online interaction.

Restrict Blu ray and DVD playback

Physical film restrictions are separate from game restrictions.

  • Open Settings → Security Settings.
  • After that, open BD – Parental Control, select Restrict (On) and set the permitted age shown.
  • Open DVD – Parental Control and choose an appropriate level from 1 to 8. Lower levels are stricter.
  • Finally, review BD / DVD – Parental Control Region Code. Select the correct region using Other if necessary, then test the result.

Why it matters: A game age limit does not also set film limits. However, discs without parental classification data may not respond to these restrictions. Review the film yourself if a control cannot classify it.

Require a password to open the browser

The PS3 browser can reach content outside a game’s rating.

  • Open Settings → Security Settings.
  • Next, select Internet Browser Start Control and turn it On.
  • Finally, test browser launch from the child’s user. Keep the required local password private.

Why it matters: Blocking unsupervised browser launch reduces an extra route to unsuitable websites. This is a launch restriction, not a modern content filter. Sony ended the PS3 Trend Micro safety services, so do not rely on an old subscription filter.

PS3 Safety Settings for Privacy and Accounts

Child Accounts in PS3 Parental Controls

PS3 safety settings rely on a separate child account with the correct age. Keep adult access private.

  • Open PlayStation Account Management in a browser and sign in as the adult.
  • Then, select Family Management. For a first family, choose Set Up Now and Add a Child. Otherwise, select Add Family Member and Add a Child.
  • Enter the child’s accurate details and an email address available for that account. Read the consent and account terms, then follow the official setup prompts.
  • Finally, complete the child’s email verification. Sign in on the console using the child account and check that the intended restrictions appear.

Why it matters: A correct child account enables age dependent restrictions. However, each account needs its own sign in details. Do not lend a child the adult account or assume a local user alone provides online family protections.

Use a PS3 Device Setup Password

Online sign in on PS3 uses a dedicated password generated on the web.

  • Sign in to official Account Management in a trusted browser.
  • After that, select Generate New Password in the Device Setup Password process. Keep the generated value private.
  • On PS3, sign in using the account email and that Device Setup Password instead of the ordinary account password.
  • Finally, if the console is lost or no longer trusted, return to the password list online and select Revoke beside that device password.

Why it matters: A separate device password lets an older console use current account sign in. A passkey does not replace this PS3 step. Avoid automatic adult sign in on a console the child can use. Revoking a device password is different from changing local content controls.

Remove and block an unwanted PS3 contact

PS3’s friend and message tools differ from modern Game Base.

  • Under Friends, select the person, press the triangle button and select Delete to remove the friend connection.
  • Next, open a received message from the person, press the triangle button and choose Add to Block List.
  • Finally, if the person is still a friend, remove that connection before adding them to the block list. Check the game’s own mute and reporting tools as well.

Why it matters: Removing a friend and blocking messages address different routes of contact. However, the PS3 block list does not guarantee exclusion from every game or stop new accounts. Do not assume PS5 voice reporting exists on PS3.

Review online spending and family controls

Check the account online without assuming every modern console feature transfers to PS3.

  • Open Account Management → Family Management and select the child.
  • Then, review Monthly Spending Limit and keep it at 0 unless you approve a budget.
  • Finally, review the available PS3 game age control and online restrictions, then test their effect in the actual PS3 game. Keep adult wallet and account access private.

Why it matters: Child account controls add a separate layer to local content restrictions. Current PS4 and PS5 time schedules are not a verified PS3 daily timer. Do not rely on the family app as a complete PS3 chat filter or monitoring service.

Secure Sign In with PS3 Safety Settings

Protect the adult manager account because it controls the child’s restrictions.

  • Open Account Management → Security.
  • After that, for passkey sign in, select Sign In with Passkey → Create a Passkey and complete the trusted device prompts.
  • Finally, review Manage Passkeys and remove a lost or unfamiliar device’s passkey when necessary. Also protect the linked email account.

Why it matters: Passkeys help resist password theft. However, keep a recovery route and control access to your devices. PS3 needs a separate Device Setup Password. Never share a sign in QR code or recovery secret.

Use two step verification for password sign in

If you continue using a password, add the available second verification step.

  • Open browser Account Management → Security.
  • Next, select Edit beside 2-step Verification. Choose Authenticator App or Text Message and follow the setup prompts.
  • Finally, enter the verification code and select Activate. Save the Backup Codes privately, away from the console.

Why it matters: A stolen password alone is less useful when a second step is required. Passkeys are an alternative sign in method, rather than a promise that both methods operate together. Each backup code works once.

Connected Apps and PS3 Privacy Settings

Disconnect services that the child does not need.

  • Open browser Account Management and select Linked Services. Choose the service and Unlink, then confirm.
  • Then, return to Authorised Apps. Select an unwanted app, choose Unlink and confirm Yes.
  • Finally, for a child, review the available Services and Apps in Family Management and check notifications about new connections.

Why it matters: Connections can add communication, broadcasting and data sharing routes. However, unlinking does not delete the separate service account or undo content already shared there. Review its own controls too.

Check subscriptions and adult checkout

Treat recurring payments separately from the child’s spending cap.

  • Open browser Account Management → Subscription.
  • After that, select Cancel Subscription beside an unwanted PlayStation Plus membership and follow the confirmation prompts.
  • Finally, for an adult account using password sign in, open Payment Method and turn on Require Password at Checkout if available.

Why it matters: A spending limit or deleting a game does not cancel a subscription. Cancellation usually leaves access until the current period ends and is not itself a refund. Checkout passwords do not apply to child accounts, wallet funding or passkey checkout.

Respond to account compromise

Act from the official account page if a device or sign in looks unfamiliar.

  • Open Account Management → Security.
  • Next, select Sign Out on All Devices when you need to end existing sessions.
  • Finally, secure the email account, review sign in methods and contact PlayStation Support if you cannot regain access. The family manager can review the child’s Reset Password control in Family Management.

Why it matters: Ending sessions helps contain account misuse. However, changing a local console passcode alone does not recover an online account. Keep recovery secrets private and do not trust unsolicited support messages.

Install official system updates

An update can change PS3 safety settings as well as address faults. Check the controls again afterwards.

  • Open Settings.
  • Then, select System Update → Update via Internet.
  • Finally, follow the official update prompts and keep power connected until installation finishes.

Why it matters: Updates address faults and security issues. An update does not restore discontinued services. Reinstalling or initialising the console can erase data, so do not use a factory reset as an ordinary safety setting.

Request account data and understand closure

Review personal data before deciding whether to close an account.

  • Open browser Account Management → Privacy Settings → Data Access Requests.
  • After that, choose Request Data, select the personal account data request and confirm after reading the details. Follow the download email instructions when the export is ready.
  • Finally, if considering closure, read Sony’s account closure guidance first. The Family app provides Settings → Close Your Account with further official prompts.

Why it matters: A data request and account closure have different consequences. However, do not close the manager account to adjust one child’s controls. Sony says manager closure also closes its child accounts. Closure enters a 30 day freeze before permanent deletion, and access to purchases can be lost.

PS3 Service and Protection Limits

Sony has scheduled the PS3 Store closure for July 2027 in this region. It is not already closed. Owned content remains subject to each game’s service availability, and Sony says purchased content can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future. PS3 payment methods and services differ from newer consoles, so check Sony’s current notices before buying anything.

The legacy browser safety services ended in 2023. Some apps and online game servers have also closed. No native PS3 daily playtime enforcement was verified in the current official sources reviewed. Use an agreed schedule, supervised access and an offline game when suitable instead of treating inactivity power saving as a parental timer.

PS3 online communication and privacy do not match every modern family feature. Test messages and each game with the child account. If you cannot establish an appropriate restriction, keep that activity offline or choose another game. This guide does not claim a universal PS3 location filter, AI filter or parent access to private conversations.

Further PS3 Privacy and Safety Settings

Review account data use and recommendations

Account privacy choices are separate from profile audiences and local content restrictions.

  • Sign in to Account Management and open Privacy Settings.
  • Next, review the data and personalisation choices offered to that account. Read the explanation before changing optional personalised advertising, purchase recommendations or partner media recommendations.
  • Finally, turn off optional uses that you do not want where available, then confirm the displayed save prompt. Check the child’s account separately from the adult account.

Why it matters: An adult’s consent choices do not automatically describe a child’s options. However, Sony’s public overview confirms these choices but does not name every current regional toggle. Disabling personalisation does not remove all adverts, recommendations or necessary service data.

How to Use PS3 Safety Settings Together

Agree which games, people and purchases are allowed before play begins. Keep the console in a shared space where possible. Also, make time to play together and review new games before approving them. A familiar username does not prove someone’s identity or intentions.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

Explain that free currency offers, account trading and unexpected sign in QR codes can be scams. Children should never share passwords, recovery codes, their school, home address or private images. In addition, ask them to tell you if someone offers gifts, demands secrecy or pressures them to move into another app.

If bullying or sexual pressure occurs, stay calm and help your child stop contact. Save useful usernames and ordinary message evidence without redistributing sexual images. Use the relevant platform or game reporting tools. For safeguarding concerns in Ireland, use CODA support resources to find appropriate help. Immediate danger needs emergency services rather than a website enquiry.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

Menus can vary with software, country and account type. Game publishers and linked services may have separate age rules and controls. Therefore, check the child’s actual account and test the restrictions after changes. Free family controls do not require PlayStation Plus. A subscription does not make a game or online contact suitable.

Checklist for PS3 Safety Settings

  • Use the correct child account and keep adult access private.
  • Check game and disc ratings, browser access and any available communication controls.
  • Review privacy audiences, spending and the agreed play schedule.
  • Check microphones, cameras and sharing before an online session.
  • Practise asking for help, stopping contact and reporting a problem.
  • Repeat these checks after updates, new games and new linked services.

Questions About PS3 Safety Settings

Do parental controls guarantee safe play?

No. Another account, a separate device or a game’s own services can leave gaps. Consequently, settings need regular checks and an open conversation with your child.

Does a game rating cover every online interaction?

No. Ratings describe classified content. Live chat and content created by other players can change. Review communication controls and the game’s own privacy settings separately.
