Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
These PlayStation family controls help parents manage access. They cannot make every game suitable for a child. Ireland’s PlayStation terms allow online accounts from age seven, with a parent or guardian managing players under 18. Other regions have their own terms. Use a true date of birth and check each game’s PEGI rating and content descriptors.
For UK and Irish adult accounts, Sony now requires age verification for certain communication, broadcasting and game features. Available methods include a mobile contract check, facial age estimation or an identity document through Yoti. Read the privacy information before choosing a method. Sony says it receives the result, while Yoti deletes facial geometry after verification. Verification does not confirm that someone is trustworthy. Never verify a child’s account using an adult’s identity.
PlayStation Family Controls and Restrictions
Child Accounts in PlayStation Parental Controls
PlayStation family controls rely on a separate child account with the correct age. Keep adult access private.
- Open PlayStation Account Management in a browser and sign in as the adult.
- Next, select Family Management. For a first family, choose Set Up Now and Add a Child. Otherwise, select Add Family Member and Add a Child.
- Enter the child’s accurate details and an email address available for that account. Read the consent and account terms, then follow the official setup prompts.
- Finally, complete the child’s email verification. Sign in on the console using the child account and check that the intended restrictions appear.
Why it matters: A correct child account enables age dependent restrictions. However, each account needs its own sign in details. Do not lend a child the adult account or assume a local user alone provides online family protections.
Appoint a trusted parent or guardian
PlayStation family controls allow a trusted adult to help manage children’s restrictions. Review the powers before granting access.
- Open browser Account Management → Family Management.
- Then, select Add Family Member → Add an Adult and enter the intended adult’s email address.
- Ask that adult to open View Family Request Now in the invitation and select Join Family.
- Finally, return to Family Management, select the adult and enable Parent/Guardian only if you intend to grant those powers.
Why it matters: A trusted guardian can help supervise the child. Guardians can change spending limits. Only one family manager exists. A child cannot simply be removed from the family, and removing an adult also removes their guardian role.
Correct an adult account used by a child
Sony provides a specific account conversion process in the UK and Ireland.
- As the parent, open Account Management → Family Management → Add Family Member. Choose the option confirming the child already has an account.
- After that, follow adult verification if requested. Enter the child’s account email and real date of birth, review the restrictions and terms, then choose Send Family Request.
- Finally, ask the child to sign in to Account Management → Family Management → Received Family Requests. Open your request, check the details, enter the real birth date and choose Join Family.
Why it matters: The appropriate account type restores child account protections. However, both accounts must use the same eligible country. Read the current conversion consequences for payments, subscriptions and linked services. Do not use an adult’s identity to verify a child as an adult.
Using PlayStation Family Controls in the App
The PlayStation Family app provides a parent view for supported child accounts.
- Install the official PlayStation Family app from your phone’s official app store. Sign in to the adult account or create one, then choose Set Up Your Family if needed.
- Next, select the child at the top of the app and the settings icon beside their name. Open Parental Controls to review restrictions.
- Review Games and Apps, Online Communication and Monthly Spending Limit. Keep spending at zero unless you approve a budget.
- Finally, check Web Browsing, disc restrictions and Use of PS VR2 and PS VR where applicable. Review Age Filtering for Online Content only where available.
Why it matters: A phone can make regular reviews easier. Preset restriction levels are a starting point. Review each control separately and check the console afterwards. Features differ by console and region.
Review app requests and activity
Use PlayStation family controls to review requests together. Discuss the game and its contact features before approving access.
- Select the child in the PlayStation Family app. Open the settings icon → Parental Controls → Games and Apps.
- Then, review Game Requests and Allowed Games. Inspect online communication requests under Online Communication.
- Finally, review the home screen Playtime, Playing Now and Activity widgets with the child. Refresh the app to check current information.
Why it matters: Requests and recent activity can support a useful conversation. However, restricted game launch requests apply to PS5. Recent activity is not a complete monitoring log or access to private conversations. Games left open can affect the displayed playing information.
Playtime in PlayStation Family Controls
Use a clear daily schedule and choose whether the limit is enforced.
- Open Account Management → Family Management and select the child.
- After that, set the child’s Time Zone correctly. Select Edit beside the playtime settings.
- Choose Restrict under Restrict Playtime. Set Duration and Playable Hours for the intended days.
- Finally, choose Log Out under When Playtime Ends for enforcement, or Notify Only for a reminder. Select Save.
Why it matters: An enforced schedule differs from a warning. This applies to PS4 and PS5 child account playtime. It does not give PS3 an automatic daily timer. Plan saving progress before logout.
Chat and Spending in PlayStation Family Controls
The browser provides shared account controls alongside the phone app.
- Open Account Management → Family Management and select the child.
- Next, choose Edit for Communication and User-Generated Content and select Restrict.
- Review Allowed Games → Communication so individual permissions do not reopen unwanted contact.
- Finally, choose Edit for Monthly Spending Limit and keep it at 0 unless you approve an amount. Save and test changes after the child signs out and back in.
Why it matters: These controls address supported contact and Store spending. However, preset game messages may remain. The Store cap does not control direct publisher billing. PS3 local controls and legacy communication have separate limits.
PlayStation Family Controls for Privacy
Privacy in PlayStation Family Controls
Decide who can change privacy before choosing the audiences.
- Open browser Account Management → Family Management → the child → Privacy Settings → Edit.
- Then, choose Parent/Guardian to manage privacy or Child to let the child make changes.
- In the Family app, select the child → settings icon → Privacy Settings. Review the privacy profile and available audiences for friend requests, interaction, friends, activity and followers.
- Finally, keep identifying details and game activity private where appropriate. Review Allow your child to receive cross-play invitations and any permissions the child may change.
Why it matters: Audience controls reduce unnecessary exposure. Options vary by age and region. A parent receives change notifications but does not gain a transcript of the child’s conversations. Privacy does not prevent screenshots.
Secure Sign In with PlayStation Safety Settings
Protect the adult manager account because it controls the child’s restrictions.
- Open Account Management → Security.
- After that, for passkey sign in, select Sign In with Passkey → Create a Passkey and complete the trusted device prompts.
- Finally, review Manage Passkeys and remove a lost or unfamiliar device’s passkey when necessary. Also protect the linked email account.
Why it matters: Passkeys help resist password theft. However, keep a recovery route and control access to your devices. PS3 needs a separate Device Setup Password. Never share a sign in QR code or recovery secret.
Use two step verification for password sign in
If you continue using a password, add the available second verification step.
- Open browser Account Management → Security.
- Next, select Edit beside 2-step Verification. Choose Authenticator App or Text Message and follow the setup prompts.
- Finally, enter the verification code and select Activate. Save the Backup Codes privately, away from the console.
Why it matters: A stolen password alone is less useful when a second step is required. Passkeys are an alternative sign in method, rather than a promise that both methods operate together. Each backup code works once.
Connected Apps and PlayStation Privacy Settings
Disconnect services that the child does not need.
- Open browser Account Management and select Linked Services. Choose the service and Unlink, then confirm.
- Then, return to Authorised Apps. Select an unwanted app, choose Unlink and confirm Yes.
- Finally, for a child, review the available Services and Apps in Family Management and check notifications about new connections.
Why it matters: Connections can add communication, broadcasting and data sharing routes. However, unlinking does not delete the separate service account or undo content already shared there. Review its own controls too.
Check subscriptions and adult checkout
Treat recurring payments separately from the child’s spending cap.
- Open browser Account Management → Subscription.
- After that, select Cancel Subscription beside an unwanted PlayStation Plus membership and follow the confirmation prompts.
- Finally, for an adult account using password sign in, open Payment Method and turn on Require Password at Checkout if available.
Why it matters: A spending limit or deleting a game does not cancel a subscription. Cancellation usually leaves access until the current period ends and is not itself a refund. Checkout passwords do not apply to child accounts, wallet funding or passkey checkout.
Respond to account compromise
Act from the official account page if a device or sign in looks unfamiliar.
- Open Account Management → Security.
- Next, select Sign Out on All Devices when you need to end existing sessions.
- Finally, secure the email account, review sign in methods and contact PlayStation Support if you cannot regain access. The family manager can review the child’s Reset Password control in Family Management.
Why it matters: Ending sessions helps contain account misuse. However, changing a local console passcode alone does not recover an online account. Keep recovery secrets private and do not trust unsolicited support messages.
Install official system updates on PS5
Keep the console software current before reviewing its controls.
- Open Settings.
- Then, select System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software.
- Finally, follow the official update prompts and keep power connected until installation finishes.
Why it matters: Updates address faults and security issues. An update does not restore discontinued services. Reinstalling or initialising the console can erase data, so do not use a factory reset as an ordinary safety setting.
Request account data and understand closure
Review personal data before deciding whether to close an account.
- Open browser Account Management → Privacy Settings → Data Access Requests.
- After that, choose Request Data, select the personal account data request and confirm after reading the details. Follow the download email instructions when the export is ready.
- Finally, if considering closure, read Sony’s account closure guidance first. The Family app provides Settings → Close Your Account with further official prompts.
Why it matters: A data request and account closure have different consequences. However, do not close the manager account to adjust one child’s controls. Sony says manager closure also closes its child accounts. Closure enters a 30 day freeze before permanent deletion, and access to purchases can be lost.
The update path above is for PS5. On PS4, use Settings → System Software Update. On PS3, use Settings → System Update → Update via Internet. Check the official hardware instructions for the console you own.
Review an eligible account upgrade
An eligible young person can choose whether to upgrade their child account.
- Sign in as the eligible player to browser Account Management.
- Next, select Upgrade Your Account only when that option appears and you intend to become an adult account.
- Finally, read the consequences and follow the official prompts. Sign out and back in after completing an intended upgrade.
Why it matters: Eligibility does not require an immediate upgrade. An upgraded adult account cannot return to child status. Discuss how account protections and family responsibilities will change first.
Review Family app notifications
Notifications can help you keep track of PlayStation family controls. They support supervision rather than enforcing a restriction.
- Open the PlayStation Family app and select Settings at the bottom.
- Then, select Push Notifications and review which alerts you want to receive.
- Finally, check your phone allows the chosen notifications and review requests in the app even when an alert does not arrive.
Why it matters: Useful alerts support regular supervision. However, a notification is not an enforced restriction. Phone settings and connection problems can delay alerts.
Remove an adult family member
Review access to PlayStation family controls when an adult should no longer belong to the family.
- As the family manager, open browser Account Management → Family Management.
- After that, select the adult, choose Remove from Your Family and review the confirmation.
- Finally, confirm only the intended removal and recheck the remaining adults and guardians.
Why it matters: This also removes that adult’s guardian role. The same process does not remove a child account. Do not close the family manager account to remove one person.
Further PlayStation Privacy and Safety Settings
Reset the child’s account password
Only the family manager can reset a child account password. An appointed guardian does not have that same power.
- As the family manager, sign in to Account Management.
- Next, open Family Management and select the child account.
- Finally, select Reset Password and follow the official recovery prompts. Keep the new password private and check the child can sign in afterwards.
Why it matters: Recovery can restore access without replacing the account. However, protect the linked email and passkey recovery routes too. Never send a password or recovery code to someone claiming to offer help.
Social Privacy in PlayStation Family Controls
Review this part of PlayStation family controls after deciding who manages the child’s privacy.
- Open the PlayStation Family app. Select the child, the settings icon beside their name and Privacy Settings.
- Then, under Social, review Who can ask to be your child’s friend, Who can interact with your child through parties, games, and messages, Who can see your child’s friends, Show read receipts to other players on PlayStation App.
- Finally, choose the most private suitable audiences. Turn off read receipts if your child does not want others to see when they read a message.
Why it matters: A small audience reduces unnecessary exposure. Read receipts can add pressure to reply. Friend status does not prove that a person is safe. If the child controls privacy, first review the authority setting with them.
Activity in PlayStation Family Controls
Review this part of PlayStation family controls after deciding who manages the child’s privacy.
- Open the PlayStation Family app. Select the child, the settings icon beside their name and Privacy Settings.
- After that, under Activity, review Who can see your child’s games and trophies, Who can see your child’s online status and what they’re currently playing, Who can see your child’s activities, Allow your child to receive crossplay invitations.
- Finally, limit the activity audiences and turn off crossplay invitations if you do not want invitations from other platforms.
Why it matters: A small audience reduces unnecessary exposure. However, activity visibility can reveal routines. Crossplay invitations are separate from a game’s multiplayer and communication controls. If the child controls privacy, first review the authority setting with them.
Followers in PlayStation Family Controls
Review this part of PlayStation family controls after deciding who manages the child’s privacy.
- Open the PlayStation Family app. Select the child, the settings icon beside their name and Privacy Settings.
- Next, under Followers, review Who can follow your child, Who can see the players your child follows, Who can see your child’s followers.
- Finally, choose the most private suitable audience for each field and confirm any save prompt.
Why it matters: A small audience reduces unnecessary exposure. Follower lists can expose social connections. Restricting visibility does not remove screenshots or stop contact through another account. If the child controls privacy, first review the authority setting with them.
App Data in PlayStation Family Controls
The parent app has its own data information and choices, separate from console privacy.
- Open PlayStation Family and select the bottom Settings icon.
- Then, under App and Legal Info, open Data You Provide. Read the data explanations and any choices the current app offers.
- Finally, decline optional collection that you do not want where the app offers that choice. Review the Privacy Policy from the same section.
Why it matters: The supervision app also processes personal information. However, mandatory service information can still be necessary. Do not assume the app offers every PS5 console data choice.
Review account data use and recommendations
Account privacy choices are separate from profile audiences and local content restrictions.
- Sign in to Account Management and open Privacy Settings.
- After that, review the data and personalisation choices offered to that account. Read the explanation before changing optional personalised advertising, purchase recommendations or partner media recommendations.
- Finally, turn off optional uses that you do not want where available, then confirm the displayed save prompt. Check the child’s account separately from the adult account.
Why it matters: An adult’s consent choices do not automatically describe a child’s options. Sony’s public overview confirms these choices but does not name every current regional toggle. Disabling personalisation does not remove all adverts, recommendations or necessary service data.
How to Use PlayStation Family Controls Together
Agree which games, people and purchases are allowed before play begins. Keep the console in a shared space where possible. Also, make time to play together and review new games before approving them. A familiar username does not prove someone’s identity or intentions.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Explain that free currency offers, account trading and unexpected sign in QR codes can be scams. Children should never share passwords, recovery codes, their school, home address or private images. In addition, ask them to tell you if someone offers gifts, demands secrecy or pressures them to move into another app.
If bullying or sexual pressure occurs, stay calm and help your child stop contact. Save useful usernames and ordinary message evidence without redistributing sexual images. Use the relevant platform or game reporting tools. For safeguarding concerns in Ireland, use CODA support resources to find appropriate help. Immediate danger needs emergency services rather than a website enquiry.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Menus can vary with software, country and account type. Game publishers and linked services may have separate age rules and controls. Therefore, check the child’s actual account and test the restrictions after changes. Free family controls do not require PlayStation Plus. A subscription does not make a game or online contact suitable.
Checklist for PlayStation Family Controls
- Use the correct child account and keep adult access private.
- Check game and disc ratings, browser access and any available communication controls.
- Review privacy audiences, spending and the agreed play schedule.
- Check microphones, cameras and sharing before an online session.
- Practise asking for help, stopping contact and reporting a problem.
- Repeat these checks after updates, new games and new linked services.
Questions About PlayStation Family Controls
Do parental controls guarantee safe play?
No. Another account, a separate device or a game’s own services can leave gaps. Consequently, settings need regular checks and an open conversation with your child.
Does a game rating cover every online interaction?
No. Ratings describe classified content. Live chat and content created by other players can change. Review communication controls and the game’s own privacy settings separately.
