WhatsApp safety settings help parents, teenagers and adults manage messages, calls, groups and shared media. Young people often use the app for family and school friendship chats. However, account type and contact choices change the protections available. This guide explains full setup steps, privacy limits and how to seek help.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
An ordinary WhatsApp account requires age 13 or the higher minimum applicable locally. However, the current terms also allow a parent managed account below that age where the feature is available.
Parents should use the genuine age and the supported account type. A store rating does not establish suitability, while parental agreement alone does not unlock an unavailable managed account.
WhatsApp keeps private chats encrypted, but recipients can copy content. In addition, groups, Status, Channels and AI involve different risks and audiences.
Read WhatsApp EEA terms for the applicable account rules and requirements.
Read WhatsApp parental controls for the applicable account rules and requirements.
Restrictions Available
WhatsApp Safety Settings: set up a child’s parent managed account
This is a separate account type for a child below the ordinary account age. However, it is available only where WhatsApp offers the setup option.
- Install the latest WhatsApp on the child’s phone and keep the parent’s signed in phone nearby.
- On the child’s registration screen, open More options, then select Create a parent-managed account. Continue to the linking screen.
- On the parent’s phone, scan the displayed QR code. Follow the adult verification prompts and create a six digit Parent PIN.
- Confirm the PIN, then select Continue and Done where prompted.
- Return to the child’s phone, enter the Parent PIN, then complete the privacy and account setup.
Why it matters: Do not create an adult account if this option is absent. Also keep the parent PIN separate from the child’s device code.
Official guidance: Set up a child’s parent managed account.
Review the managed account’s privacy and requests
Unknown contact requests need parent review on this account type. In addition, privacy choices require the parent PIN.
- On the child’s phone, open Settings, then Privacy and enter the Parent PIN.
- Review each offered audience separately and confirm the intended contacts.
- For unfamiliar contacts, open Settings, then Parental controls and enter the PIN.
- Open Requests folder, review the sender and chat, then approve only a contact you can verify. Otherwise, use the displayed block or report option.
Why it matters: Approval can allow later contact. Therefore, review group membership and explain how to ask for help. Parent tools do not remotely reveal encrypted conversations.
Official guidance: Review the managed account’s privacy and requests.
Set up optional parental controls for a teenager
Eligible teens aged 13 to 17 and an adult parent can link accounts. However, this gradual rollout requires the latest app on both phones.
- On the teen’s phone, open Settings, then Parental controls and Continue.
- Enter the genuine birthday, confirm the age and continue to link a parent.
- On the parent’s phone, scan the teen’s QR code and select the option to link WhatsApp.
- Continue, complete adult verification, then create and confirm a six digit Parent PIN. Select Continue, then Done.
- Return to the teen’s phone, enter that PIN and review the privacy and feature choices.
- Select Continue, then Done. The teen completes the final confirmation.
Why it matters: A linked parent must approve less protective privacy changes. However, the setup is optional and does not replace supervision outside WhatsApp.
Official guidance: Set up optional parental controls for a teenager.
Manage a linked teenager’s privacy choices
Parents can review teen settings with their PIN. However, the parent cannot read private message content through these tools.
- On the teen’s phone, open Settings, then Parental controls.
- Enter the Parent PIN, then open Privacy settings.
- Choose each available audience and confirm the intended privacy level.
- Ask the teen to review Settings, then Privacy with you. Explain that weakening a protected choice requires parent approval.
Why it matters: Keep accurate ages and discuss each exception. Also remember that an approved contact can still behave unsafely.
Official guidance: Manage a linked teenager’s privacy choices.
WhatsApp Safety Settings: review Meta AI, Status and Channels with the parent
Linked parent controls include feature choices. For example, Meta AI offers a stricter Limited Content experience rather than a guarantee of safe answers.
- On the teen’s phone, open Settings, then Parental controls and enter the Parent PIN.
- Open the offered Meta AI, Channels and Status controls separately.
- Read each available choice and select the narrowest suitable access. For Meta AI, choose Limited Content when offered.
- Confirm each choice, then review the resulting teen experience together.
Why it matters: Do not share private or intimate information with AI. In addition, Channels and public updates have a different audience and privacy model from private chats.
Official guidance: Review Meta AI, Status and Channels with the parent.
Review linked account activity alerts
Alerts give activity information rather than message transcripts. Similarly, the options depend on the linked account type.
- On the parent’s phone, open Settings, then Parental controls.
- Select the linked child or teen and review the available alerts and notification choices.
- Alternatively, on their phone open Settings, then Parental controls, enter the Parent PIN and review activity.
- Discuss unfamiliar additions or groups calmly rather than treating every alert as evidence of harm.
Why it matters: The tools cannot monitor contact on other apps. Also review the transition when a child becomes eligible for an ordinary account.
Official guidance: Review linked account activity alerts.
WhatsApp Safety Settings and Why They Matter
WhatsApp privacy settings: Privacy Checkup
Privacy Checkup groups the main privacy choices together. However, each category still needs a separate decision.
- Open WhatsApp, then Settings. On Android, first tap More options if needed.
- Select Privacy, then Privacy Checkup.
- Work through each category and confirm the audience or protection you want.
Why it matters: A single privacy change does not secure every feature. Therefore, repeat the check after major updates.
Official guidance: WhatsApp privacy settings: Privacy Checkup.
Limit profile photos, About and online visibility
A name, face photo and activity pattern can help someone identify or impersonate a user. For example, school uniforms can reveal a school.
- Open Settings, then Privacy.
- Select Profile photo and About separately, then choose My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody where offered.
- Select Last seen and online, then restrict last seen and choose Same as last seen for online visibility.
- Open the profile editor through Settings, then replace a face photo with an avatar or another non identifying image.
Why it matters: These controls limit exposure, but a contact can still copy visible information. Also remember that ordinary group members can see phone numbers.
Official guidance: Limit profile photos, About and online visibility.
WhatsApp Safety Settings: choose the Status audience and read receipts
Status posts can reach a different audience from an individual chat. Similarly, read receipts can create pressure to reply.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Status.
- Choose My contacts except… or Only share with…, then select the intended people and confirm.
- Return to Privacy, then switch off Read receipts if that suits your family.
Why it matters: Audience changes do not remove copies already received. Group chats and some message types handle receipts differently, so explain the limitation.
Official guidance: Choose the Status audience and read receipts.
WhatsApp safety settings for group invitations and members
Group invitations can connect a teenager with strangers. However, restricting invitations does not remove existing group members.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Groups.
- Select My contacts or My contacts except…, then confirm the selection.
- Open each group, tap its name, then review participants and administrators.
- Use Exit group when the group is unsuitable. Also ask an administrator to reset an invite link that has spread.
Why it matters: Phone numbers remain visible in ordinary group chats. Therefore, avoid large groups whose membership you cannot explain.
Official guidance: WhatsApp safety settings for group invitations and members.
Silence unknown callers
This reduces ringing from numbers outside the user’s contacts. However, silencing is not the same as blocking.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Calls.
- Turn on Silence unknown callers.
- Check the calls list when expecting a genuine call from an unsaved number.
Why it matters: An unanswered call does not require an immediate reply. Instead, verify an unexpected caller through a trusted method.
Official guidance: Silence unknown callers.
WhatsApp security settings: two step verification and recovery
Two step verification adds account protection beyond the registration code. WhatsApp is replacing the older six digit PIN with a password.
- Open Settings, then Account, then Two-step verification.
- Select Enable or the available setup option, then create the password or PIN requested by your account.
- Confirm it and add a recovery email you control. Then complete any email verification prompt.
- Return to Account, then review Email address when that option appears.
Why it matters: Never disclose a registration code, PIN, password or email recovery code. A genuine support contact does not need those secrets.
Official guidance: WhatsApp security settings: two step verification and recovery.
WhatsApp Safety Settings: set up passkeys
A passkey uses the device’s secure sign in system. However, it does not replace a strong device passcode or careful recovery planning.
- Open Settings, then Account, then Passkeys.
- Select the setup option, then follow the device’s passkey creation prompts.
- Confirm where the passkey is stored and protect that account. Also review any additional passkeys you no longer use.
Why it matters: A stolen unlocked device can weaken protection. Therefore, secure the phone and the account that stores the passkey.
Official guidance: Set up passkeys.
Review linked devices
Linked computers and tablets can hold copies of conversations. For example, a forgotten shared computer can remain a privacy risk.
- Open Settings, then Linked devices. On Android, use More options, then Linked devices.
- Select a device you do not recognise or no longer use, then choose Log out.
- Repeat for other devices and never scan a linking code sent by an unexpected contact.
Why it matters: Account security includes every linked device. Therefore, review this list after travel or a suspected takeover.
Official guidance: Review linked devices.
WhatsApp privacy settings: Chat Lock and secret codes
Chat Lock limits casual access to selected chats on a device. However, it cannot make the other participant trustworthy.
- Open the chat, then tap the contact or group name.
- Select Chat lock, then enable it and complete device authentication.
- Open Locked chats, then Chat lock settings and Secret code if you want a separate code.
- Create and confirm the code. Also check linked devices rather than assuming identical protection everywhere.
Why it matters: Do not use hidden chats to conceal harmful contact from a trusted adult. Losing a secret code can lead to destructive recovery choices.
Official guidance: WhatsApp privacy settings: Chat Lock and secret codes.
Review Advanced chat privacy
This can limit export, automatic media saving and use of Meta AI inside a selected chat. However, participants can still photograph a screen.
- Open an individual chat, then its contact information and Advanced chat privacy.
- Turn the setting on, then review the explanation displayed.
- For an administered group, open Group info, then Group permissions and enable Edit group settings as required.
- Return to Group info, then enable Advanced chat privacy.
Why it matters: Apply the protection separately to each relevant chat. Older app versions and some business chats have different limitations.
Official guidance: Review Advanced chat privacy.
WhatsApp Safety Settings: whatsApp security settings: advanced protections
Advanced protections reduce some unwanted traffic and information exposure. However, they do not identify every scam.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Advanced.
- Enable Protect IP address in calls to relay calls through WhatsApp, where offered.
- Enable Disable link previews and Block unknown account messages where available.
- Review Strict Account Settings in the same area, then read and accept the displayed restrictions if suitable.
Why it matters: Strict settings may reduce attachments and calls from unknown people. Also remember that high volume blocking does not block every unfamiliar message.
Official guidance: WhatsApp security settings: advanced protections.
WhatsApp safety settings for encrypted backups
A cloud backup needs its own protection. In addition, the recovery method must remain available if the phone is lost.
- Open Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
- Select End-to-end encrypted backup, then enable it.
- Choose the passkey, password or encryption key offered by your account, then complete the confirmation prompts.
- Store the required recovery information securely before starting the backup.
Why it matters: WhatsApp cannot recover a backup without its required secret. Therefore, explain recovery before enabling the setting for a young user.
Official guidance: WhatsApp safety settings for encrypted backups.
Set disappearing messages carefully
A timer reduces how long messages remain in the chat. However, deletion is not proof that recipients have no copies.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Default message timer.
- Choose a duration or leave it off, then discuss the choice together.
- For an existing chat, tap its contact or group name, then select Disappearing messages and the required duration.
Why it matters: Disappearing messages can make later safeguarding review harder. Therefore, do not use a timer to hide threats or pressure.
Official guidance: Set disappearing messages carefully.
Understand view once media
View once changes how media is displayed, rather than granting control over the recipient. For example, another camera can capture it.
- Choose a photo or video in a chat, then review it before sending.
- Tap the View once icon marked 1 only if you want that display mode.
- Avoid sending intimate or identifying material on the assumption that it cannot be copied.
Why it matters: Temporary visibility does not guarantee privacy. Reporting may also provide the media to WhatsApp.
Official guidance: Understand view once media.
WhatsApp privacy settings: stop live location
Live location can reveal a route, home or school. However, a one time location pin and continuing live sharing are different.
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Live location.
- Review active shares, then select Stop sharing and confirm.
- Also open the phone’s app permission settings, then limit WhatsApp’s Location access.
Why it matters: Stop each share when its agreed purpose ends. An old screenshot can still retain an earlier location.
Official guidance: WhatsApp privacy settings: stop live location.
Limit media downloads and gallery saving
Automatic downloads can place unwanted files on a device. In addition, gallery saving can expose private media to other apps.
- Open Settings, then Storage and data, then review Media auto-download.
- On iPhone, choose Never for unwanted media types. On Android, review mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming choices separately.
- Open Settings, then Chats, then review Save to Photos on iPhone or Media visibility on Android.
Why it matters: Manual downloading gives the user a chance to assess a file. However, it is not a malware guarantee.
Official guidance: Limit media downloads and gallery saving.
Block and report unwanted contact
Blocking limits further contact from a particular account. Reporting also shares relevant recent activity with WhatsApp.
- Open the contact or group information, then select Block or Report.
- Read the confirmation and decide whether to block or leave the group as well.
- Keep safe identifiers and dates when needed for further reporting. However, never download or forward sexual images involving a child as evidence.
Why it matters: Shared groups can still expose contact after an individual block. Therefore, review the group and seek support for serious concerns.
Official guidance: Block and report unwanted contact.
Request account data or close an account
Account reports and chat backups serve different purposes. In addition, closing an account has consequences beyond uninstalling the app.
- Open Settings, then Account, then Request account info to request the available account report.
- Wait for the report, then use Download report when available and store it privately.
- To close the account, first preserve lawful information you need. Then open Account, select Delete my account and read every consequence before confirming.
Why it matters: Account deletion does not erase recipients’ copies. Also cancel any separate paid subscription through its billing provider.
Official guidance: Request account data or close an account.
How to Use WhatsApp Safely
Review WhatsApp safety settings together before changing a child’s access. For example, agree which contacts and groups serve a clear purpose. Also explain how to leave a conversation and ask for help.
Verify unexpected requests through a separate trusted channel. However, a familiar name, image or voice can come from a copied or stolen account. Never share passwords, login codes or intimate images under pressure.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
- Treat requests for secrecy, money, intimate images or urgent account action as warning signs. Instead, pause and ask a trusted adult.
- Use an avatar or another non identifying image where practical. Also keep school uniforms, home details and regular routes out of shared photos.
- Discuss consent before forwarding messages or photos. However, encryption and disappearing content cannot prevent a recipient using another camera.
- Respond calmly if a child reports harmful contact. Reassure them that asking for help will not automatically mean punishment.
- Avoid unexpected downloads, account linking codes and third party recovery services. For example, legitimate support does not need your authentication secret.
Irish support and reporting
In immediate danger, call 112 or 999. Contact An Garda Síochána about private or encrypted abuse and safeguarding concerns. However, do not download, copy or forward sexual images involving children to collect evidence.
Hotline.ie accepts reports within its illegal online content remit. In addition, use Useful Links and Supports for further support routes. CODA’s contact form is not an emergency service.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
WhatsApp parental features are rolling out gradually. Therefore, an Irish account may not show the same controls as another country or app version. Follow the account’s available setup rather than changing country or age to bypass eligibility.
Managed accounts limit features compared with ordinary accounts. Review the official Parent managed account guidance and the transition guidance before the child reaches the ordinary minimum age.
Phone, web and desktop menus differ. Also use device controls for bedtime, app limits and camera or microphone permissions, since ordinary WhatsApp accounts do not provide a universal parent enforced screen time schedule.
Core privacy controls are free. However, Channel subscriptions, paid business services and purchases can incur charges. Check the displayed price and billing provider before agreeing, then cancel recurring charges through that provider. Removing WhatsApp does not automatically cancel separate billing.
WhatsApp Safety Settings Checklist
- Confirm the genuine age, account type and supported country before setup.
- Review the relevant contact, profile, group and content protections above. Also check each exception.
- Protect recovery methods and every signed in device. Then remove sessions you no longer need.
- Agree a location sharing purpose and an end time. Similarly, restrict camera and microphone access when unnecessary.
- Check billing separately from app removal. For example, uninstalling an app usually does not cancel subscriptions.
- Practise blocking, reporting and seeking help. Finally, repeat the review after updates, new contacts or a device change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can parents read messages through parental controls?
No. The dashboard provides supported settings and activity information, rather than access to encrypted message content. However, parents can review the child’s device together with an agreed safeguarding approach.
Do WhatsApp safety settings hide a phone number from every group?
No. Ordinary group members can see phone numbers. Therefore, avoid unfamiliar groups and check membership before joining.
Are temporary messages safe to send?
Not necessarily. A recipient can copy content before it disappears. Instead, avoid sending anything harmful if retained or shared.
