WhatsApp Business safety settings help parents recognise business contact and help adult operators protect their accounts. WhatsApp Business adds public business profiles, catalogs and automated replies to messaging. Families may encounter it through shops, tutors, clubs or offers shared online.
This guide covers WhatsApp Business privacy settings, account protection and important limits. However, it is an adult commercial service rather than a child messaging app. A business name or badge does not prove that a seller or contact is safe.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
The WhatsApp Business App terms require the person representing the business to be at least 18, or the age of majority in their country. The service is for authorised business or commercial use. It is not a child account or a parental control product.
Young people may encounter a business while shopping, contacting a club or following an offer. However, a business label, catalogue or verification badge does not guarantee honest conduct. A child should not create a business account to bypass ordinary account restrictions.
WhatsApp Business Safety Settings and Restrictions
Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for the public profile
Business details are designed to be visible to customers. Therefore, keep family and private home information out of the public profile.
- Open the Tools tab and open your business profile. On versions using Business tools, open the profile there.
- Review the address, email, website, description, About and profile image.
- Then edit each field to use only appropriate business details and select Save where prompted.
Why it matters: An ordinary profile privacy setting does not make every business field private. Use a separate business contact route rather than a child’s personal number.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for the public profile.
Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for linked profiles
A linked social account can connect separate audiences. Also check whether the linked account contains family information.
- Open the business profile and select the linked Facebook or Instagram entry.
- Turn Show on profile off to hide it from the profile.
- Then for removal, choose Remove WhatsApp and review the confirmation.
Why it matters: Hiding a link does not delete either account or recall information already viewed. Confirm the actual linked business before making changes.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for linked profiles.
Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for catalogs
Product images and descriptions can reveal personal information. Therefore, check backgrounds, addresses and documents before uploading.
- On iPhone, open Tools, then Catalog and select the item.
- Tap More, then Edit, turn Hide this item on and tap Save.
- Then for permanent removal, swipe left on the item and choose Delete, then confirm Delete.
Why it matters: A hidden item remains in your manager. Deleting it does not remove screenshots or settle an existing payment or order.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for catalogs.
Review WhatsApp Business contact controls for away replies
Away replies can protect personal time. However, a message should not reveal that a family home is empty.
- Open Tools, then Away message and enable Send away message.
- Edit the message and select OK. Avoid travel dates, personal addresses or sensitive safeguarding details.
- Choose Schedule and the intended times. Outside of business hours requires saved business hours.
- Then review Recipients and tap Save.
Why it matters: Replies need an internet connection. They are not emergency monitoring or a promise that a person is available.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business contact controls for away replies.
Review WhatsApp Business contact controls for QR codes
A business QR code invites contact. Also remove old copies from public posts when they attract unwanted messages.
- On Android, open Tools, then More options and Short link.
- Select View QR Code, then More options, Reset link, Reset and OK.
- Then on iPhone, open Tools, Short Link and QR Code, then select Reset twice.
Why it matters: The previous code stops working, but someone who already knows the contact details can still try to message you. Blocking is separate.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business contact controls for QR codes.
WhatsApp Business Privacy and Account Protection
Protect WhatsApp Business account security at sign in
Additional verification helps resist registration scams. Also secure recovery email and never reveal a login code.
- Open Settings, then Account and Two-step verification.
- Follow the offered setup to create the required password or PIN and confirm the recovery email.
- Then where Trusted devices appears, review the list and remove a device you no longer trust.
Why it matters: WhatsApp is replacing the six digit PIN with a password on supported versions. Trusted verification devices and linked messaging devices are different lists.
Official guidance: Protect WhatsApp Business account security at sign in.
Review WhatsApp Business safety settings for linked devices
A linked computer or companion phone can retain chat access. Therefore, review this list after staff or device changes.
- On the primary Android phone, open More options, then Linked devices. On iPhone, open Settings and Linked devices.
- Select an unused or unfamiliar device.
- Then tap Log out and check the remaining list.
Why it matters: Closing a browser window does not necessarily unlink it. Never scan or approve a login code sent by an unsolicited caller.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business safety settings for linked devices.
Check WhatsApp Business privacy settings and read receipts
Visibility choices control several personal account details. However, public business information needs its own review.
- Open Settings, then Privacy.
- Review Last seen and online, Profile photo, About and Status individually.
- Then choose the smallest suitable audience, such as My contacts or Nobody where offered. Review Read receipts separately.
Why it matters: Available audiences differ by field. Group read receipts remain, and privacy settings do not guarantee that a recipient cannot copy content.
Official guidance: Check WhatsApp Business privacy settings and read receipts.
Use WhatsApp Business contact controls for group invitations
Group invitation controls reduce unexpected additions. Also inspect groups the account has already joined.
- On the primary phone, open Settings, then Privacy and Groups.
- Select My contacts, or My contacts except… and exclude unsuitable contacts.
- Then review existing groups separately and leave those you do not need.
Why it matters: This does not stop invitation links or remove existing membership. Community announcements have separate behaviour.
Official guidance: Use WhatsApp Business contact controls for group invitations.
Use WhatsApp Business contact controls to silence unknown calls
Silencing reduces interruptions from unfamiliar numbers. However, a legitimate customer may also be unfamiliar.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Calls.
- Turn Silence unknown callers on.
- Then review missed calls deliberately rather than immediately returning an urgent sounding request.
Why it matters: Silencing does not block every message or prove a caller’s identity. Verify payment changes through an established route.
Official guidance: Use WhatsApp Business contact controls to silence unknown calls.
Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for call IP addresses
Relaying calls reduces direct IP address exposure to the other person. However, it can affect call quality.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Advanced.
- Then turn Protect IP address in calls on.
Why it matters: This does not hide information shown in a video background or shared in conversation. Group calls already use relaying.
Official guidance: Review WhatsApp Business privacy settings for call IP addresses.
Disable outgoing link previews
A preview can involve fetching the destination of a link. Therefore, privacy conscious users may prefer to disable outgoing previews.
- Open Settings, then Privacy.
- Select Advanced.
- Then turn Disable link previews on.
Why it matters: This affects links you send, not previews you receive. It does not make a suspicious link safe to open.
Official guidance: Disable outgoing link previews.
Use WhatsApp Business safety settings to block or report
A report and a personal block serve different purposes. Also review shared groups and optional third party chats.
- Open the conversation and tap the contact name or unknown phone number.
- Choose Block and confirm it to stop direct contact.
- Then for abuse, choose Report or Report and block, then review the confirmation.
Why it matters: Shared groups remain an exception. Reporting can send recent messages and call details to WhatsApp for review, and a new account can create further contact.
Official guidance: Use WhatsApp Business safety settings to block or report.
Protect WhatsApp Business account security in backups
A backup needs its own protection. Also plan recovery before creating a password or encryption key.
- Open Settings, then Chats and Chat Backup.
- Select End-to-end encrypted backup and Turn on.
- Then use the offered Create a passkey process, or More options for a password or encryption key.
Why it matters: You can lose access if you lose the required recovery method. Check whether the feature is offered for the actual business account and device.
Official guidance: Protect WhatsApp Business account security in backups.
Avoid sending private information to the AI business assistant
The assistant is optional and region limited. However, information deliberately sent to AI has separate data implications.
- Open Chats and locate Business assistant if you have already started it.
- Review what you previously shared. Avoid sending child information, private customer chats or payment secrets.
- Then for deletion choices, use the official business assistant guidance and its linked AI privacy and deletion instructions.
Why it matters: Meta receives prompts, AI messages, feedback and relevant business information. AI output can be wrong, and ordinary chat encryption is not a reason to disclose private data to AI.
Official guidance: Avoid sending private information to the AI business assistant.
Close an unused business account deliberately
Account deletion differs from uninstalling the app. Therefore, review customer obligations and lawful records before closure.
- On the primary phone, open Settings, then Account and Delete my account.
- Read the consequences and complete the requested phone number and confirmation prompts only when ready.
- Then review paid subscriptions and external business tools separately.
Why it matters: A linked computer cannot perform account deletion. Closure does not automatically refund a customer or cancel every external subscription.
Official guidance: Close an unused business account deliberately.
Review Android camera, microphone and location access
Phone permissions control access to sensitive device features. However, they do not erase information already shared.
- Open the phone’s Settings, then Apps and select WhatsApp Business.
- Tap Permissions and open each permission you do not need.
- Choose Don’t allow, or Allow only while using the app for supported permissions you need.
- Then review photo and contact access separately, then check essential app functions.
Why it matters: Location can also appear in photographs or typed messages. Therefore, combine permissions with careful sharing.
Official guidance: Review Android camera, microphone and location access.
Use Family Link for supported child Android devices
A parent can manage app time on a properly supervised child Android device. Also protect the parent account and explain the rules together.
- On the parent’s phone, open Family Link and select the child.
- Open Screen time, then Time limits and App limits.
- Select WhatsApp Business, choose Set limit, enter a suitable duration and tap Done.
- Then check the result on the child’s device, including any available exceptions.
Why it matters: This controls access rather than reading conversations. A parent using Family Link on an iPhone does not supervise a child iPhone through Family Link.
Official guidance: Use Family Link for supported child Android devices.
Restrict an app on a child’s iPhone or iPad
Apple family controls can prevent access to an unsuitable app. However, the child needs their own Apple Account in the family.
- On the parent’s device, open Settings and Family, then select the child.
- Open Apps & Websites and follow setup prompts if needed.
- Select WhatsApp Business and choose Block App.
- Then protect the Screen Time passcode and check access on the child’s device.
Why it matters: Blocking does not close the service account or delete copies held by others. Review other devices independently.
Official guidance: Restrict an app on a child’s iPhone or iPad.
Some accounts are receiving business usernames and optional username keys. A key can limit first contact through a username, but the rollout is gradual. A person scanning a business QR code can contact it without separately entering the key. Therefore, avoid publishing contact routes you intend to keep restricted.
Also review available chat locks, live location sharing, disappearing messages, high volume unknown message blocking and restricted chat features in the actual account. For the shared WhatsApp controls, use the existing WhatsApp Safety Settings guide. Business availability can differ from the personal app, so do not assume a personal feature appears in Business.
How to Use WhatsApp Business Safely
Agree who can contact you and when you will check messages. For example, verify an unexpected request through a phone number you already trust. A familiar photograph, name or voice can come from a copied or stolen account.
Use an avatar or another image that does not identify a child. Also keep uniforms, home addresses and daily routines out of shared photographs. Ask permission before posting someone else’s image, and avoid putting private conversations into AI tools.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
- Pause when someone requests secrecy, money, sexual images or login codes. Instead, contact a trusted person before replying.
- Explain that online friendship does not create an obligation to send images, move into private chats or keep unsafe secrets.
- Respond calmly when a young person asks for help. Reassure them that abuse is the responsibility of the person causing harm.
- Keep lawful usernames, dates and message details where safe. Never download, copy or forward sexual images involving children to collect evidence.
Irish support and reporting
In immediate danger, call 112 or 999. Contact An Garda Síochána about threats, private abuse or child safeguarding concerns. For financial fraud, also contact your bank promptly.
Hotline.ie accepts reports within its illegal online content remit. In addition, use Useful Links and Supports. CODA’s contact form is not an emergency service.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
WhatsApp Business App, the Business Platform and ordinary WhatsApp have different terms and tools. This guide concerns the app. Ireland is in the European Region under the current Business App terms, while available features can differ in the UK and USA.
Business usernames, AI tools, verification subscriptions, payment features and optional integrations can have regional or account restrictions. Review the actual account and genuine provider instructions. Do not change country or age to unlock a feature.
Core protective settings do not require paying an unsolicited support agent. However, ads, subscriptions, provider services and purchases can involve charges. Review billing with the actual provider before assuming account deletion cancels it.
WhatsApp Business Safety Settings Checklist
- Check genuine age, account ownership and country eligibility before allowing access.
- Review every relevant privacy, contact and group control above. Also check shared groups separately from direct messages.
- Protect the login, recovery email and each signed in device. Keep recovery codes private.
- Review camera, microphone, photo and location permissions. Then check what the locked screen reveals.
- Use suitable device limits and purchase approval where needed. Remember that app removal does not necessarily close an account or cancel billing.
- Practise blocking, reporting and asking for help. Finally, repeat the review after a new device, app update or unwanted contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child use Business as a supervised account?
No. Current Business App terms require an authorised adult business representative. It is not a parental control or child account product.
Does a business label prove a seller is trustworthy?
No. Check the organisation independently and verify unexpected payment requests through an established route. A business label cannot guarantee safe conduct.
Does a block stop shared group messages?
No. Shared groups remain an exception. Therefore, review membership and leave unwanted groups as well as blocking direct contact.
