WeChat safety settings help families review friend requests, social posts, device access and personal information. WeChat combines messaging, calls, Moments and connected services. Young people may encounter it through friends or relatives abroad. However, messaging, social posts and payment features have different privacy implications.
This guide explains verified WeChat privacy settings and device restrictions for parents and eligible users. Also check the actual account region and software before relying on a control. WeChat and mainland China’s Weixin can have different terms, services and protective features.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
The EU’s Better Internet for Kids WeChat guide lists a minimum age of 13, with parental permission for everyone under 18. Separately, Common Sense Media’s WeChat review recommends 16+. This is independent suitability advice, rather than the service’s account rule. Neither reference establishes every current Irish account requirement.
For parents in Ireland, confirm age requirements, any required guardian permission and the available supervision before allowing use. Parental permission does not automatically override a minimum age. Also avoid changing a birthday or country to obtain features.
Friend verification, account recovery and payment identity checks do not prove that another user is safe. A familiar name, photograph or voice can come from an impersonator. Therefore, use suitable supervision and avoid independent child access when you cannot establish adequate protection.
For the applicable rules, read Garda social media user safety guide.

WeChat Safety Settings and Restrictions
WeChat parental controls where available. An illustrated iPhone test documents this setup. However, labels and availability may differ by account and region. First, have both parent and young person’s accounts ready, with the parent in the contact list.
- On the young person’s phone, open Me, then Settings and Parental Control Mode, if offered.
- Read the mode’s terms. If you agree, select Enable, then create and confirm the separate passcode.
- Tap Select Guardian, choose the parent’s account and send the Guardian Request.
- On the parent’s phone, open the young person’s conversation and select Agree on the genuine request.
- Return to Parental Control Mode on the young person’s phone. Enter the passcode and review each displayed restriction.
- Check access requests together. Also verify the result on the young person’s device before relying on it.
Why it matters: This setup does not establish Irish availability, unrestricted message monitoring or a complete content filter. If the mode is absent, use the device controls below. Never change age or region to obtain a feature.
Keep WeChat safety settings for friend requests enabled
Requiring a friend request gives you a decision before adding a new contact. However, a request can still come from an impersonator.
- Open WeChat, tap Me and open Settings.
- Open Friends’ Permissions, under Privacy where shown.
- Keep Require Friend Request turned on. Then verify each unexpected request through an established separate route.
- Also review Find Mobile Contacts and turn it off if you do not want contact recommendations from your phone’s address book.
Why it matters: An accepted contact can copy information or behave harmfully. Turning off recommendations does not remove existing contacts or invitations shared elsewhere.
Also read official WeChat guidance for this control.
Review WeChat privacy settings for each contact
A contact’s privacy choices can limit access to social posts. However, a restricted contact may still be able to chat.
- Open Contacts and select the person whose access you want to review.
- Tap the top right three dots, then Privacy.
- Choose Chats Only where appropriate. Alternatively, review the offered Hide My Posts choice for Moments and Status.
- Review the selected state before returning to your contacts. Also inspect existing posts for school, location or family details.
Why it matters: A visibility change does not erase copies already made. Also remember that hiding another person’s posts is different from hiding your own posts from them.
Also read official WeChat guidance for this control.
Use device limits alongside WeChat parental controls
Family Link can limit app access on supported supervised Android devices. However, it does not provide a complete private WeChat transcript.
- On the parent’s phone, open Family Link and select the correctly aged supervised child.
- Choose Screen time, Time limits and App limits, then select WeChat.
- Tap Set limit, choose the hours and minutes and select Done.
- Review unlimited time exceptions and other devices. Also check whether a separate browser or account provides another access route.
Why it matters: A parent running Family Link on an iPhone does not make the child’s iPhone device supervised by Family Link. Keep necessary family communication available deliberately.
Also read Google Family Link app limit guidance.
Restrict WeChat access on a child’s iPhone or iPad
Apple family controls can block a particular app. However, they require the child’s own account and the appropriate family setup.
- Confirm the child has their own Apple Account within Family Sharing, with you assigned the parent or guardian role.
- For the updated version 27 family controls, open the parent’s Settings, then Family and the child’s name.
- Tap Apps & Websites and enter the parent’s Screen Time passcode if asked.
- Select WeChat, tap Block App and tap again to confirm. Also review website access separately.
- On older software, use the matching Screen Time instructions for that version rather than assuming the new menu is available.
Why it matters: Blocking an app does not delete its account or messages. Also protect the parent passcode and check the result on the child’s actual device.
Also read Apple family app restriction guidance.
Account Privacy and Protective Controls
WeChat backup and restoration. HONOR’s illustrated support instructions describe a local computer backup. Use your own computer. Connect both devices to the same trusted network.
- Sign in on the computer and open the lower left menu.
- Select Migration & Backup, then Backup & Restore and Back up to computer.
- Select the conversations and complete the confirmations on both devices.
- For restoration, reconnect both devices to the same network and sign in.
- Open Migration & Backup, then Backup & Restore and Restore to phone. Select the required conversations and complete the prompts.
Why it matters: Restore the backup to a phone to read it. Unsaved conversations cannot be recovered from that backup.
Improve WeChat account protection with a recovery email
A recovery email can help retain access after a phone problem. However, that email needs its own strong account protection.
- Open Me, then Settings and Account Security.
- Tap More Settings, then Email.
- Link an email address you control and complete the verification prompts. Also confirm that you can access its recovery methods.
- Use a unique account password and keep login codes private. Never provide a code to someone claiming to be WeChat support.
Why it matters: A recovery route is not identity proof for another contact. Also secure the phone and email rather than relying on a familiar profile picture.
Also read official WeChat guidance for this control.
Review WeChat account protection on connected devices
A computer or tablet may retain access after the phone setup changes. Therefore, inspect the device list periodically.
- Open Me, Settings and Account Security.
- Select Manage Devices and inspect the listed devices together.
- For unfamiliar access, use the account’s official security or recovery route promptly. Also change a reused password and protect the linked email.
- Check shared computers separately and sign out when finished. Never approve a login QR code or confirmation you did not initiate.
Why it matters: Recognising a device name is only one check. A device list is not a parent monitoring dashboard, and closing a window may leave access active.
Also read official WeChat guidance for this control.
Check WeChat privacy settings in Android permissions
Phone permissions govern access to location, camera, microphone and contacts. However, removing permission does not erase information already sent.
- On Android, open the phone’s Settings, then Apps.
- Select WeChat, using See all apps first if needed, then tap Permissions.
- Open each unnecessary permission and choose Don’t allow. For supported location, camera or microphone access, consider Allow only while using the app.
- Review photos and contacts separately. Also check whether denying a permission affects a function you actually need.
Why it matters: Location can also appear in photographs or messages. Therefore, review what you share rather than relying only on a permission switch.
Also read Google Android permission guidance.
Keep WeChat message previews private
A locked phone can reveal message text through notifications. Therefore, review both app alerts and the lock screen.
- On Android, open Settings, then Notifications and App notifications.
- Select WeChat and choose the alert categories you need. Also review whether silent alerts still appear.
- Return to Notifications and open Notifications on lock screen.
- Turn off Show sensitive content where offered, or choose the device’s equivalent privacy option. Then inspect the locked screen.
Why it matters: Notification menus vary by phone. Muting does not block a sender or enforce bedtime, so use access limits separately when necessary.
Also read Google Android notification guidance.
How to Use WeChat Safely
Review WeChat safety settings before accepting a new contact or joining a group. For example, contact a relative through an existing trusted number before responding to an urgent request. Keep personal QR codes and invitation links away from public posts.
Use a nonidentifying profile image and avoid school details, addresses and daily routines. Also inspect older Moments and shared photographs. A small audience cannot prevent someone copying a post or photographing a screen.
Agree a purpose and end time before sharing live location. However, stopping a location permission does not recall a location already sent. Keep cameras and microphones off when unnecessary, and review what a video background reveals.
Connected mini programs, games, payments and AI features can involve separate services and data uses. Therefore, read their permissions before opening or authorising them. Do not paste private chats, school information or authentication codes into an assistant.
Keep passwords unique and install the genuine app from an official store. Also keep the app and phone updated. Do not install remote support software or share a screen because an unsolicited caller claims a payment or account problem.
If unwanted contact occurs, use blocking and reporting separately. First, retain relevant usernames, dates and lawful message details before clearing a conversation. Then use the reporting routes below, and seek Garda help for threats or child safeguarding concerns.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Find WeChat reporting and blocking instructions. eSafety’s WeChat directory provides separately labelled routes to the service’s help.
- Open the directory and find How can you report online abuse, ask for content to be removed or block someone?
- Select Reporting content on a profile or Report abusive content for the issue concerned.
- Select Block someone on WeChat separately to find blocking instructions. Follow the current instructions for your device.
Why it matters: Reporting is not the same as blocking. If a linked help page does not load, use the in app support route below. Do not copy or forward sexual images involving a child as evidence.
A familiar photograph, voice or name cannot prove who is contacting you. For example, copied profiles and stolen accounts can impersonate friends. Verify urgent requests through an established separate contact route.
- Pause when someone demands secrecy, money, private images or an authentication code. Instead, speak to a trusted adult before responding.
- Use a nonidentifying avatar and keep school details, home addresses and daily routines out of profiles. Also ask permission before sharing another person’s photograph.
- Respond calmly when a child asks for help. However, do not promise that blocking will prevent contact through another account or service.
- Keep lawful usernames, dates and relevant message details where safe. Never download, copy or forward sexual images involving children as evidence.
Irish support and reporting
In immediate danger, call 112 or 999. Contact An Garda Síochána about threats, private abuse or child safeguarding concerns. Also contact your bank promptly if money or payment details are involved.
Irish Internet Hotline accepts reports within its illegal online content remit. For further routes, use Useful Links and Supports. CODA’s contact form does not provide emergency reporting.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
The illustrated app controls in this guide follow a recent WeChat safety booklet hosted by Singapore’s Digital for Life programme. Menus and features may differ for Irish accounts, language settings, software and Weixin accounts.
The illustrated parental setup above is account dependent. Therefore, check the mode’s own explanation rather than assuming a mainland China youth feature applies in Ireland. Internet Matters’ supervision guide also explains that supervision tools vary between platforms. Its general advice does not verify WeChat’s regional controls.
Device supervision, notification choices and app blocking have their own prerequisites. They are separate from WeChat account eligibility and cannot guarantee suitable conversations. Also check each computer or tablet independently.
Ordinary account privacy controls do not require paying a stranger. However, purchases, payment services and mini programs can have separate costs and verification requirements. Review the billing provider and cancellation route before paying.
Request account deletion or data export instructions. Where regional guidance differs, ask through in app support.
- Open WeChat, then Me and Settings.
- Choose Help & Feedback, then Feedback.
- Give the account region, device and app version. Request current instructions.
- Before closure, ask about balances, pending payments, retention and cancellation.
Why it matters: A request does not itself export data, close an account or cancel billing. Preserve required records first.
WeChat Safety Settings Checklist
- Review WeChat safety settings and confirm the current account age and country rules before child setup.
- Keep friend request approval enabled and inspect existing contacts.
- Review individual contact access to Moments and other social information.
- Protect the recovery email, password and connected devices.
- Check phone permissions and lock screen previews. Also review the information in shared photographs.
- Use supported family device restrictions and check their exceptions.
- Learn the app’s blocking and reporting route before a problem occurs. Finally, identify a trusted adult who can help calmly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do WeChat parental controls provide every conversation to parents?
Do not assume this. Device restrictions can manage access without providing a full transcript. Also check the scope and region of any app parental mode before relying on it.
Do WeChat privacy settings stop an accepted contact copying a post?
No. A contact can copy or photograph visible content. Therefore, combine a limited audience with careful sharing and ask permission before posting another person’s image.
Are WeChat and Weixin settings always identical?
No. Account region, terms, available services and software can differ. Therefore, use the guidance that applies to the actual account rather than assuming a screenshot from another country will match.
Can WeChat safety settings prevent every account scam?
No. A copied profile or stolen account can look familiar. Therefore, verify requests independently and never share passwords, verification codes or remote device access.
