Telegram safety settings help adults in Ireland review cloud messages, public communities, calls, bots and shared media. Its channels and large groups can attract people seeking news or interest communities. However, the current EU terms require users to be at least 18. This is an adult guide, with advice for parents responding to underage use.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Telegram’s EU terms require users from EU countries, including Ireland, to be at least 18 to sign up. Therefore, privacy settings or parental permission do not create an eligible Irish child account.
An app store rating is a content classification rather than the account minimum. If a child already uses Telegram, respond calmly, seek safeguarding help where needed and choose an age appropriate alternative.
Age checks for restricted content differ by region. However, an age confirmation does not verify someone’s character or make all public content safe.
Read Telegram EU terms for the applicable account rules and requirements.
Restrictions Available
This service does not offer an enforced parent account dashboard for ordinary accounts. Instead, combine the controls below with device restrictions and regular conversations.
Telegram Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Telegram privacy settings: phone number
Number visibility and discovery are separate controls. However, people who already saved your number may still recognise it.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Phone Number.
- Under Who can see my phone number?, choose Nobody or the narrowest suitable audience.
- Review Who can find me by my number? separately, then check every exception and save.
Why it matters: A public username still provides a contact route. Therefore, avoid publishing it widely if you want limited contact.
Official guidance: Telegram privacy settings: phone number.
Restrict profile photos and activity visibility
Different profile details have separate audiences. For example, an unrestricted photo can identify a person even when their number is hidden.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Profile Photos.
- Choose My Contacts or Nobody where offered, then review exceptions and any separate public photo.
- Return to Privacy and Security, open Last Seen & Online, choose the required audience and save.
- Edit your profile separately to remove unnecessary birthday, biography, location or face photo details.
Why it matters: Approximate activity or brief online indicators can still appear in some circumstances. Also remember that copying visible information remains possible.
Official guidance: Restrict profile photos and activity visibility.
Telegram privacy settings: forwarded message attribution
Forwarding can reveal an account link as well as message text. However, restricting attribution cannot prevent a copy of the content.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Forwarded Messages.
- Choose Nobody if you do not want forwarded messages to link back to your account.
- Review any exceptions and confirm the change.
Why it matters: Recipients can still identify you from the message itself. Therefore, consider what it reveals before sending.
Official guidance: Telegram privacy settings: forwarded message attribution.
Restrict group and channel invitations
Invitation controls reduce unsolicited additions. However, they do not change the safety of spaces you already joined.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Groups & Channels or the current invitation control.
- Choose My Contacts where available, review exceptions and save.
- Open an unsuitable group or channel, tap its name, then use the menu’s Leave option and confirm.
Why it matters: Public communities can contain harmful or illegal material. Also review members rather than assuming a topic or invitation makes a space safe.
Official guidance: Restrict group and channel invitations.
Telegram Safety Settings: control calls and peer to peer exposure
Calls and IP address sharing have separate controls. For example, relaying a call can reduce information disclosed to the other caller.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Calls.
- Choose My Contacts or Nobody for who may call and review exceptions.
- Review Peer-to-Peer, choose Nobody if you want calls relayed, then save.
Why it matters: Relaying may affect call quality. However, a restricted call audience is still not an identity check.
Official guidance: Control calls and peer to peer exposure.
Telegram security settings: two step verification
A separate password protects new sign ins beyond a login code. In addition, its recovery email needs strong security.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Two-Step Verification.
- Create and confirm a strong unique password. Avoid a hint that reveals the password.
- Add an email you control, then complete the verification sent to that email.
Why it matters: Never share Telegram login codes or the password. Instead, use official recovery prompts if access is lost.
Official guidance: Telegram security settings: two step verification.
Telegram Safety Settings: set up a Telegram passkey
A passkey can sign in using device security rather than an SMS code. However, you still need to manage account and device recovery.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Passkeys.
- Choose the option to create a passkey and complete the device authentication prompts.
- Review the listed passkeys and remove entries you no longer trust or use.
Why it matters: Protect the password manager or account storing the passkey. Also retain access to the phone number and other required recovery methods.
Official guidance: Set up a Telegram passkey.
Review devices and active sessions
A cloud account can remain open on several devices. Therefore, review session access after travel or suspected compromise.
- Open Settings, then Devices. Older clients place Active Sessions under Privacy and Security.
- Select an unfamiliar session, then Terminate Session and confirm.
- Review the inactive session logout timer and choose a suitable period.
- If necessary, use Terminate All Other Sessions after reading its effect.
Why it matters: A new session can have temporary limits on terminating older sessions. However, a passcode on one phone does not secure another signed in computer.
Official guidance: Review devices and active sessions.
Telegram privacy settings: local passcode lock
A local lock protects casual access to a device. However, it is different from the account’s two step password.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Passcode Lock or Passcode & Face ID.
- Enable the lock, create and confirm the code, then set the offered automatic lock interval.
- Review biometric unlocking and secure the device itself. Also repeat the protection on supported desktop clients.
Why it matters: An unlocked device can reveal encrypted chats. Therefore, avoid sharing its code with people who should not read conversations.
Official guidance: Telegram privacy settings: local passcode lock.
Distinguish Cloud Chats from Secret Chats
Ordinary Cloud Chats are not end to end encrypted. In contrast, Secret Chats use that protection and stay on their originating devices.
- On a supported mobile client, open the contact’s profile, then the additional options.
- Select Start Secret Chat and confirm. Both people need to use a supported client.
- Open the Secret Chat’s contact information and compare its Encryption Key through a trusted channel.
- Use the offered self destruct timer only after discussing retention and copying.
Why it matters: A Secret Chat does not become a cloud group or follow you to every device. Also remember that another camera can copy the screen.
Official guidance: Distinguish Cloud Chats from Secret Chats.
Telegram Safety Settings: review automatic message deletion
A global timer affects later chats and messages rather than guaranteeing no copies. Therefore, consider safeguarding needs before enabling it.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and Auto-Delete Messages.
- Select the required duration or leave automatic deletion off.
- For an existing conversation, open its header or additional options and review the offered Auto-Delete control separately.
Why it matters: Group permissions determine who may change some timers. However, exported, photographed or previously copied content can remain.
Official guidance: Review automatic message deletion.
Stop live location sharing
Live sharing continues to reveal movement for its chosen duration. In addition, some options allow extended sharing.
- Open the chat containing the active location message and select it.
- Choose Stop Sharing and confirm. Review the app’s active location banner for other ongoing shares.
- Open the phone’s app permission settings and restrict Telegram’s Location access when unnecessary.
Why it matters: A location share can reveal a home or routine. Therefore, stop it when the agreed purpose ends.
Official guidance: Stop live location sharing.
Review Stories audiences
Stories can reach wider audiences than a private chat. Similarly, profile display and retention choices affect later visibility.
- Before posting a Story, open its audience selector and choose Selected Contacts or another narrow audience.
- Review selected people, exceptions and the option to keep the Story on your profile.
- Open an existing Story’s menu to review its privacy choices or delete it if no longer appropriate.
Why it matters: Do not rely on screenshot restrictions to prevent copying. Also avoid sharing a location tag that reveals where you live.
Official guidance: Review Stories audiences.
Limit contact syncing and automatic downloads
Syncing uploads address book information, while downloads place received files on the device. However, these are separate decisions.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security. On iPhone, also open Data Settings.
- Turn off Sync Contacts if unnecessary, then use Delete Synced Contacts to remove the uploaded list.
- Open Settings, then Data and Storage. Review Automatic media download for each network type and deselect unwanted downloads.
Why it matters: Turning syncing off prevents further uploads but does not itself remove existing uploads. Also avoid opening unexpected attachments.
Official guidance: Limit contact syncing and automatic downloads.
Review bots, mini apps and AI access
Bots and mini apps may involve separate operators and data practices. For example, an AI answer can be wrong or unsuitable.
- Open each bot or mini app’s information and review the operator and privacy policy before use.
- Decline unnecessary phone, contact, location or account access requests.
- Open Settings, then Privacy and Security and the offered connected bot or website sessions. Revoke access you no longer use.
- Block an unwanted bot through its profile. Also avoid sending documents, intimate material or authentication secrets to AI tools.
Why it matters: A bot badge or automated group guardian does not establish child suitability. There is no universal setting that makes all third party AI safe.
Official guidance: Review bots, mini apps and AI access.
Telegram safety settings: block and report
Blocking limits direct contact from one account. Reporting provides Telegram with information about the selected content.
- Open the person’s profile, then the additional options and Block User. Confirm the block.
- For prohibited content, use the message or public space menu’s Report option.
- Choose the accurate reason and relevant messages, then submit the report. Leave unsuitable groups or channels separately.
Why it matters: A block cannot stop another account or remove a harmful group. Therefore, seek further support for serious threats.
Official guidance: Telegram safety settings: block and report.
Export data or delete an account
Exporting creates a separate private copy of information. However, account deletion permanently removes account access and is not a subscription cancellation.
- On Telegram Desktop, open Settings, then Advanced and Export Telegram Data.
- Choose the data and destination, complete the security confirmation if requested and keep the export private.
- For inactive account deletion, open mobile Settings, then Privacy and Security and review Delete my account if away for.
- For immediate deletion, follow the official deletion link in Telegram’s FAQ and read the permanent loss warning before confirming.
Why it matters: Deletion does not guarantee removal of every recipient’s copy. Also cancel any recurring Premium or third party payment separately.
Official guidance: Export data or delete an account.
Restrict sharing in a private chat, if you have Premium
This optional paid feature limits forwarding, screenshots and media saving in supported clients. However, another camera can still retain content.
- Open the other person’s profile from the individual chat.
- Open the additional options, then choose Disable Sharing and confirm the displayed choice.
- Read the chat notice together. If the option is absent, check the client and Premium eligibility rather than assuming protection.
Why it matters: Paid restrictions are not a reason to send intimate or identifying content. Also review any external copies that already exist.
Official guidance: Restrict sharing in a private chat, if you have Premium.
How to Use Telegram Safely
For adults, review Telegram safety settings before joining communities or sharing sensitive information. For parents, respond calmly to underage use and choose an age appropriate alternative. Also explain how to leave a conversation and seek help.
Verify unexpected requests through a separate trusted channel. However, a familiar name, image or voice can come from a copied or stolen account. Never share passwords, login codes or intimate images under pressure.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
- Treat requests for secrecy, money, intimate images or urgent account action as warning signs. Instead, pause and ask a trusted adult.
- Use an avatar or another non identifying image where practical. Also keep school uniforms, home details and regular routes out of shared photos.
- Discuss consent before forwarding messages or photos. However, encryption and disappearing content cannot prevent a recipient using another camera.
- Respond calmly if a child reports harmful contact. Reassure them that asking for help will not automatically mean punishment.
- Avoid unexpected downloads, account linking codes and third party recovery services. For example, legitimate support does not need your authentication secret.
Irish support and reporting
In immediate danger, call 112 or 999. Contact An Garda Síochána about private or encrypted abuse and safeguarding concerns. However, do not download, copy or forward sexual images involving children to collect evidence.
Hotline.ie accepts reports within its illegal online content remit. In addition, use Useful Links and Supports for further support routes. CODA’s contact form is not an emergency service.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Telegram offers no ordinary parent account dashboard that makes the service eligible for an Irish child. This guide’s controls apply to adults and should not be used to bypass account age requirements.
Mobile, web and desktop menus differ. Secret Chats need a supported mobile client, while the full data export is a desktop function. Keep software current and use device notification privacy and camera or microphone permissions.
Premium, Stars, gifts, bot payments and third party services can involve spending. Basic account privacy controls remain available without treating a paid plan as a safeguarding tool.
To review Premium billing, open Settings, then Telegram Premium and the displayed subscription management option. If the store billed you, use that store’s subscriptions screen and cancel there. Check renewal and any separate bot or business charge, since deleting Telegram does not cancel all billing.
Telegram Safety Settings Checklist
- Confirm the genuine age, account type and supported country before setup.
- Review the relevant contact, profile, group and content protections above. Also check each exception.
- Protect recovery methods and every signed in device. Then remove sessions you no longer need.
- Agree a location sharing purpose and an end time. Similarly, restrict camera and microphone access when unnecessary.
- Check billing separately from app removal. For example, uninstalling an app usually does not cancel subscriptions.
- Practise blocking, reporting and seeking help. Finally, repeat the review after updates, new contacts or a device change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Irish children use Telegram with parent supervision?
The current EU terms require users to be at least 18. Therefore, a parent’s permission or a private setting does not create an exception.
Are ordinary Telegram chats end to end encrypted?
No. Ordinary Cloud Chats have a different security model from Secret Chats. Therefore, choose the appropriate supported chat type and verify important contacts.
Do Telegram safety settings make public channels safe?
No. Public content can still contain scams or harmful material. Instead, leave unsuitable channels, report violations and avoid trusting offers or files.
