Signal safety settings help parents, eligible teenagers and adults protect encrypted messages, calls, groups and Stories. Young people may use it for private friendship or family conversations. However, encryption does not assess whether a contact is safe. This guide explains account protection, full control steps and the limits of temporary messages.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Signal’s terms set a minimum age of 13, while local requirements or permission rules can be higher. Therefore, use the genuine age and check the terms applicable to the child.
Signal does not offer a parent managed child account, remote parent message dashboard or universal mature content filter. Parents should not treat encryption as proof that the app suits every child.
Read Signal terms and privacy policy for the applicable account rules and requirements.
Restrictions Available
This service does not offer an enforced parent account dashboard for ordinary accounts. Instead, combine the controls below with device restrictions and regular conversations.
Signal Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Signal privacy settings: phone number and username
Phone number visibility and discovery are separate choices. However, a person who already knows a number does not forget it after a setting change.
- Tap your profile to open Signal Settings, then Privacy and Phone Number.
- Set Who can see my number to Nobody where appropriate. Then review Who can find me by my number separately.
- To share a username instead, return to Settings, tap your profile, then create the offered Username.
- Share its complete text, QR code or link privately with the intended contact.
Why it matters: A username helps initiate contact without distributing a phone number. However, it is not an identity certificate or a public social profile.
Official guidance: Signal privacy settings: phone number and username.
Signal safety settings: handle message requests
A request lets you decide whether to connect with an unfamiliar person or group. Therefore, verify the sender before accepting.
- Open the incoming Message request, then review the available profile and shared context.
- Select Accept only after verification. Otherwise, choose Block or Delete.
- For unwanted or suspicious contact, use Report spam when offered and read the confirmation.
Why it matters: Accepting can change information shared with the sender. Also remember that Signal support does not initiate private conversations asking for codes.
Official guidance: Signal safety settings: handle message requests.
Compare safety numbers
Safety numbers help verify a conversation’s encryption identity. However, they cannot establish that someone intends no harm.
- Open the individual chat, then tap the person’s name and View Safety Number.
- Compare the digits or scan the QR code together in person or through a separate trusted channel.
- Mark the contact verified only after a successful comparison. If it changes unexpectedly, verify again before sending sensitive information.
Why it matters: Device changes can legitimately change the number. Therefore, check the reason rather than assuming either safety or a takeover.
Official guidance: Compare safety numbers.
Signal security settings: PIN and Registration Lock
The Signal PIN protects account information and can support Registration Lock. However, it is not a backup of conversations.
- Open Signal Settings, then Account and Change your PIN if you need a stronger PIN.
- Choose the available numeric or alphanumeric option, confirm the PIN and store it securely.
- In Account, enable Registration Lock for a phone number account and review its explanation.
Why it matters: Never disclose the PIN or registration code. Losing a required PIN can delay access, while support cannot recover it for you.
Official guidance: Signal security settings: PIN and Registration Lock.
Signal Safety Settings: protect a phone numberless Signal Login, if offered
Signal documents phone numberless registration separately for its Android beta. Therefore, these controls apply only when your account actually has a Signal Login.
- Open Signal Settings, then tap your avatar to view the Signal Login.
- Open its second factor settings. Add an authenticator app, then confirm the six digit code it generates.
- Alternatively, choose Passkey, complete the device’s secure setup and confirm the passkey.
- Keep an independent recovery method available and remove only factors you no longer use.
Why it matters: This account type uses second factors instead of traditional Registration Lock. However, Signal cannot restore lost authenticator or passkey access.
Official guidance: Protect a phone numberless Signal Login, if offered.
Enable Screen Lock on the phone
Screen Lock uses device authentication to limit casual access. However, desktop protection requires its own device security.
- Open Signal Settings, then Privacy and enable Screen Lock.
- Set the offered inactivity timeout. Then close and reopen Signal to confirm the device authentication prompt.
- Also use a strong phone passcode that other people do not know.
Why it matters: An unlocked shared device can expose chats even when transmission is encrypted. Therefore, secure the device as well as the account.
Official guidance: Enable Screen Lock on the phone.
Signal privacy settings: Screen Security
This limits previews in the app switcher and supported screenshot capture. However, it cannot stop another person photographing the screen.
- Open Signal Settings, then Privacy.
- On Android, enable Screen Security. On iPhone, enable Hide Screen in App Switcher.
- On a supported desktop, review Privacy, then Screen security and its operating system limitations.
Why it matters: Check protection on each device. Also explain that this setting cannot control the recipient’s phone.
Official guidance: Signal privacy settings: Screen Security.
Signal Safety Settings: review and unlink devices
Linked devices can receive private conversations. For example, a shared computer may retain access after the phone is put away.
- On the primary phone, open Signal Settings, then Linked devices.
- Select an unfamiliar or unused device and choose the displayed unlink option. On Android, hold its entry if required.
- Confirm removal, then repeat for other devices. Never scan a device linking QR code from an unexpected message.
Why it matters: Removing access does not erase every copy someone already made. Therefore, also secure any computer or tablet you continue using.
Official guidance: Review and unlink devices.
Control group links and membership
An invitation link can spread beyond its intended audience. Therefore, require approval and review who is already present.
- Open the group, tap its name, then select Group Link.
- Enable Approve New Members when using a link. Turn the link off when invitations are no longer needed.
- Use Reset Link if it has spread. Also review the members and group permissions through group information.
- As an administrator, remove inappropriate members. Otherwise, use Leave group if the space is unsuitable.
Why it matters: An approved person can still copy messages or invite contact elsewhere. Also check whether group permissions let other members add people.
Official guidance: Control group links and membership.
Require approval for reusable call links
A call link can be reused and passed to others. However, participants previously approved can join later calls on that link automatically.
- Open Calls, then Create a Call link.
- Enable Require admin approval, then share the link only with intended people and select Done.
- During a call, reveal the controls and participant list. As the creator, use Block from call for unwanted participants.
- After its purpose ends, open the link in Calls, choose Delete call link and confirm.
Why it matters: Deleting prevents new joins but does not end an ongoing call. In addition, callers can see profile information shared with the call.
Official guidance: Require approval for reusable call links.
Signal privacy settings: Stories audience
Stories expire after a day, but the selected audience can still copy them. In addition, group Stories reach the group’s membership.
- Open Signal Settings, then Stories and My Story.
- Choose Only Share With… or All Except…, then review the people selected.
- Review Replies & Reactions and View receipts separately.
- If you do not need Stories, choose Turn Off Stories in Stories on mobile or Privacy on desktop.
Why it matters: Accepted message requests can become Signal connections. Therefore, review the audience again after new contacts.
Official guidance: Signal privacy settings: Stories audience.
Review read receipts and typing indicators
These controls affect what contacts learn about activity. For example, receipts can create pressure to answer immediately.
- Open Signal Settings, then Privacy and review Read Receipts.
- Turn receipts off if suitable. Both people need them enabled to exchange read status.
- In the same privacy area, review Typing Indicators separately.
Why it matters: Turning these off reduces activity signals rather than blocking contact. Also agree realistic response times.
Official guidance: Review read receipts and typing indicators.
Hide notification content and relay calls
Notification previews can expose a message on a locked screen. Similarly, direct calls can expose an IP address.
- Open Signal Settings, then Notifications and Show. Choose No name or message for the strongest preview privacy.
- Open Signal Settings, then Privacy and Advanced. Enable Always Relay Calls where offered.
- Also review the phone’s notification permissions and locked screen display.
Why it matters: Relayed calls can reduce call quality. However, neither option makes an unfamiliar caller trustworthy.
Official guidance: Hide notification content and relay calls.
Signal Safety Settings: limit automatic attachment downloads
Manual downloads give you a chance to assess an unexpected file. However, some media types always download.
- Open Signal Settings, then Data and Storage.
- Review each Media auto-download network category and deselect unwanted attachment types.
- Check mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming separately. Also avoid opening files sent by unverified contacts.
Why it matters: Voice messages, view once media and small stickers have exceptions. Therefore, do not treat these controls as a malware filter.
Official guidance: Limit automatic attachment downloads.
Set disappearing message timers
A timer controls retention inside Signal rather than the recipient’s behaviour. Therefore, discuss evidence and safeguarding before enabling it.
- Open Signal Settings, then Privacy and Default timer for new chats. Choose a duration or leave it off.
- For an existing chat, tap the contact or group name, then Disappearing messages and the required duration.
- Review the timer notice in the conversation after saving.
Why it matters: Changes affect later messages. However, recipients can copy content and group permissions can affect who changes the timer.
Official guidance: Set disappearing message timers.
Understand view once media
View once removes the usual persistent media display. However, another camera can retain a copy.
- Choose the photo or video in the chat composer.
- Select the media mode icon to change from the ordinary repeat display to View once.
- Review the recipient and media before sending. Avoid intimate or identifying material if a copy could cause harm.
Why it matters: Temporary display does not guarantee secrecy. Instead, agree that consent matters before sharing or forwarding.
Official guidance: Understand view once media.
Signal Safety Settings: signal security settings: Secure Backups
Optional Secure Backups use a separate recovery key. However, the Signal PIN does not restore this archive.
- Open Signal Settings, then Backups, Setup and Enable Backups.
- Save the displayed 64 character recovery key securely, confirm it, then select Next and Continue.
- Choose the free or paid plan offered, review any billing and finish the confirmation.
- To delete the archive, use Backups, then Turn Off and Delete Backup. Read the irreversible deletion warning before confirming.
Why it matters: The free archive includes messages and recent media, while paid storage has broader media retention. View once and soon disappearing messages have exclusions.
Official guidance: Signal security settings: Secure Backups.
Block numbers, usernames or groups
Blocking limits direct contact and requests from the selected account. However, shared groups require separate review.
- Open the chat or request, then tap the contact or group header.
- Select Block and confirm. Use Report spam when offered for suspicious requests.
- Review the list through Signal Settings, then Privacy and Blocked.
Why it matters: A block cannot stop alternate accounts or off platform contact. Therefore, seek support if threats or sexual pressure continue.
Official guidance: Block numbers, usernames or groups.
Close a Signal account safely
Deleting the account is different from uninstalling desktop software. In addition, recipients retain copies they already have.
- Preserve lawful information you need and review backup and billing choices first.
- On the phone where the account is active, open Signal Settings, then Account and Delete Account.
- Enter the phone number and read the confirmation before proceeding.
- Separately clear local data on computers you no longer use and cancel any paid backup subscription.
Why it matters: Removing desktop data alone leaves the account active elsewhere. Therefore, make the account decision on the primary phone.
Official guidance: Close a Signal account safely.
Set notification schedules on Android or desktop
Notification Profiles reduce selected interruptions rather than enforcing app closure. However, they are currently unavailable on iPhone.
- Open Signal Settings, then Notifications and Notification Profiles.
- Create a profile and select the people or groups allowed to notify you. Review call and mention exceptions.
- Add the available schedule and confirm its hours and days. Review the active profile shown above the chat list.
Why it matters: A quiet profile does not stop someone opening Signal. Also review desktop sync if you want separate schedules on each device.
Official guidance: Set notification schedules on Android or desktop.
How to Use Signal Safely
Review Signal safety settings together before changing a child’s access. For example, agree which contacts and groups serve a clear purpose. Also explain how to leave a conversation and ask for help.
Verify unexpected requests through a separate trusted channel. However, a familiar name, image or voice can come from a copied or stolen account. Never share passwords, login codes or intimate images under pressure.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
- Treat requests for secrecy, money, intimate images or urgent account action as warning signs. Instead, pause and ask a trusted adult.
- Use an avatar or another non identifying image where practical. Also keep school uniforms, home details and regular routes out of shared photos.
- Discuss consent before forwarding messages or photos. However, encryption and disappearing content cannot prevent a recipient using another camera.
- Respond calmly if a child reports harmful contact. Reassure them that asking for help will not automatically mean punishment.
- Avoid unexpected downloads, account linking codes and third party recovery services. For example, legitimate support does not need your authentication secret.
Irish support and reporting
In immediate danger, call 112 or 999. Contact An Garda Síochána about private or encrypted abuse and safeguarding concerns. However, do not download, copy or forward sexual images involving children to collect evidence.
Hotline.ie accepts reports within its illegal online content remit. In addition, use Useful Links and Supports for further support routes. CODA’s contact form is not an emergency service.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
The main guide covers ordinary mobile Signal accounts. Phone numberless Signal Login controls have a separate Android beta context, so do not expect those menus on every account.
Phone and desktop features differ. For example, Screen Lock is a mobile control, while notification profiles and some screenshot protections depend on the device. Keep the primary device active and review linked devices.
Use device Screen Time or Family Link for bedtime, app access and camera or microphone permissions. However, those controls do not grant access to encrypted chat contents.
Signal’s ordinary protective controls are free. If you choose paid Secure Backups, cancel through the billing store. On Android, open Play Store, your profile, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions and the Signal backup entry. On iPhone, open Settings, your name, Subscriptions and that entry. Then choose the cancellation option and confirm. Donations are separate from backup billing.
Signal Safety Settings Checklist
- Confirm the genuine age, account type and supported country before setup.
- Review the relevant contact, profile, group and content protections above. Also check each exception.
- Protect recovery methods and every signed in device. Then remove sessions you no longer need.
- Agree a location sharing purpose and an end time. Similarly, restrict camera and microphone access when unnecessary.
- Check billing separately from app removal. For example, uninstalling an app usually does not cancel subscriptions.
- Practise blocking, reporting and seeking help. Finally, repeat the review after updates, new contacts or a device change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can parents enforce Signal safety settings remotely?
Signal has no ordinary parent dashboard for these settings. Instead, review the phone together and use appropriate device controls.
Does a Signal PIN restore chats?
No. Backups or a supported device transfer provide chat recovery. Therefore, keep the separate backup recovery key if you enable Secure Backups.
Does a username prove identity?
No. Verify an important contact independently and compare safety numbers when appropriate. Also remember that verified people can still act unsafely.
