Reddit Safety Settings

Reddit safety settings help parents and teenagers reduce unwanted contact, mature content and exposure of personal information. Reddit contains public communities called subreddits, each with its own discussions and rules. This guide explains the controls to review together, why they matter and where their protection ends.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Reddit’s global minimum account age is 13, although higher regional requirements apply. However, the Irish Apple App Store rates Reddit 18+. A minimum account age is not a child suitability recommendation. Reddit can contain explicit material, hostility and harmful advice, so it is unsuitable for young children.

Reddit limits mature communities and content to adults. Do not enter a false birthday, use an adult account for a teenager or bypass an age check. See Reddit’s age requirements before creating an account.

Teen accounts receive stronger defaults. Some social settings remain locked for ages 13 to 15, while older teens can change more options. Reddit describes parental approval through Apple family tools as coming soon, so do not assume a parent dashboard already exists. Read Reddit’s current teen protections.

For families in Ireland, Reddit’s EU age assurance guidance describes Apple account confirmation on iOS or Persona selfie or ID checks. Reddit says it does not see or store the sensitive documents. Nevertheless, read the provider’s notice before submitting information. An age check establishes eligibility, not the trustworthiness of another person.

Restrictions Available

Keep mature content disabled

Mature content restrictions reduce access to material labelled NSFW. For teens, retain the automatic restrictions. On an adult account, the following web controls can reduce accidental exposure.

  • Sign in to reddit.com in a browser and open your account menu.
  • Select Settings, then Preferences.
  • Keep Show mature (18+) content switched off. Some screens call it Show NSFW Content (18+).
  • For iPhone use, manage this preference on the website, then restart the app.
  • On Android, open Settings, find View Options and keep Show NSFW Content (I’m over 18) off.

Why it matters: An image blur only covers a preview until someone reveals it. Therefore, disabling mature content offers a different protection. Incorrectly labelled material can still appear. Mature content controls

Restrict chat requests

Chat requests let other users approach you privately. Keep the teen default Nobody, rather than relying on someone’s account age or profile image.

  • In the app, tap your Avatar to open your profile.
  • Open the three line menu, then select Settings.
  • Select your username under Account Settings or General.
  • Scroll to Safety and open Chat and messaging permissions.
  • Under Chat Requests, select Allow chat requests from, then Nobody.
  • Review the Allowlist and remove anyone you do not trust. Younger teens may have locked options.

Why it matters: This reduces unsolicited private approaches. However, Reddit administrators and community moderators can still send requests. Existing conversations also need separate attention. Chat permission instructions

Remove identifying profile details

A nickname does not make every post anonymous. Review the profile and earlier contributions for clues that reveal your identity.

  • On the website, open your account menu and select Settings.
  • Open Profile to review your display name, biography, avatar, banner and social links.
  • Remove your school, home address, phone number and unnecessary links to identifiable accounts.
  • Use the separate Content and activity instructions below to review profile visibility.
  • On mobile, open your profile and select Edit to change the available profile details.

Why it matters: Combining small details can identify a person. Profile display choices do not remove public posts from their original communities or copies elsewhere. Profile settings guidance

Block unwanted accounts

Use Block account when you want to cut off contact. You do not need to reply or explain your decision.

  • Open the person’s Reddit profile.
  • Tap the three dot menu at the top right in the app, or in the profile card on the website.
  • Select Block account and confirm any prompt.
  • To review blocked people in the app, open Settings, select your username and find Manage blocked accounts under Safety.

Why it matters: Blocking reduces contact from that account. Nevertheless, another account or a copied post can create further contact. Report abuse as well as blocking. Blocking instructions

Report harmful posts and comments

Reporting alerts Reddit or the relevant moderation team to content that may break rules. Choose the actual harmful item so reviewers can see the context.

  • Find the post or comment you need to report.
  • Open the three dot menu beside the post or beneath the comment.
  • Select Report.
  • Choose the reason that best matches the problem and complete the requested details.
  • Submit the report, then block the account if you also need to stop contact.

Why it matters: Reporting a specific example gives reviewers useful evidence. However, a report does not guarantee immediate removal or emergency intervention. Reporting content in a community

Protect password logins with an authenticator

Two factor authentication adds a code from an authenticator app when you sign in using a Reddit password. Setup currently requires a computer browser.

  • Sign in to Reddit on a computer and open your username menu.
  • Select Settings, then find Account authorization.
  • Enable Two-factor authentication.
  • Enter your password and select Confirm.
  • Follow the on screen authenticator setup instructions and enter the requested code.
  • Save the Backup codes somewhere secure and follow any prompt to sign in again.

Why it matters: A stolen password alone becomes less useful. If you sign in through Apple or Google, secure that account through its own authentication settings instead. Authentication setup

Turn off followers

Followers receive posts made to your profile in their home feed. Retain the stricter teen default. Follower controls

  • Tap your Avatar, open the three line Menu and select Settings.
  • Select your username under Account Settings.
  • Under Safety, turn Allow people to follow you off. Keep locked younger teen protections.
  • On the website, open Settings, then Privacy. Under Social interactions, turn the same option off.

Why it matters: This limits profile followers, not access to public community posts. Previously followed posts can take an hour to disappear from feeds.

Limit the activity shown on your profile

Content and activity changes your profile display. Profile settings guidance

  • On the website, open Settings, then Profile.
  • Under Curate your profile, open Content and activity and choose Hide all or exclude specific communities.
  • In the app, open your Avatar, then the three line Menu and Profile curation to review equivalent choices.

Why it matters: Public posts remain accessible elsewhere. Relevant moderators can see full history for 28 days after specified interactions. For example, posting again restarts that period.

Reduce suggested communities in the home feed

Home feed recommendations can introduce communities you have not chosen. Recommendation controls

  • In the app, open your Avatar, the three line Menu and Settings.
  • Select your username under Account Settings or General.
  • Under Privacy, turn Show recommendations in home feed off. Android may call it Enable home feed recommendations.
  • On the website, open Settings and Preferences, then turn Show recommendations in home feed off.

Why it matters: This narrows home recommendations rather than blocking public browsing. Therefore, review joined communities and other feeds separately.

Mute an unwanted community

Muting reduces a community’s appearance in selected feeds and notifications. Community muting

  • Open the community you want to mute.
  • Select its three dot Menu, then Mute r/[community name] and confirm any prompt.
  • To review choices in the app, open Settings and your username. Under Safety, select Manage muted communities.
  • On the website, open Settings, then Preferences and Muted communities.

Why it matters: Muting is not an access block and the community can still be visited directly. Enabling its notifications again can remove the mute. Report rule breaking content separately.

Stop automatic video previews

Autoplay video previews can be disabled to make viewing more deliberate. Android app controls and iPhone app controls.

  • Open your Avatar, then the three line Menu and Settings.
  • Under Accessibility, open Media and animations.
  • Open Autoplay video previews and choose the available option that disables automatic playback.

Why it matters: This changes playback rather than filtering content. A teenager can still tap a video, so it does not replace mature content restrictions.

Reduce notification interruptions

Manage notifications controls the alerts Reddit sends. This can support agreed time boundaries.

  • Open your Avatar, the three line Menu and Settings.
  • On iPhone, select your username under Account Settings. On Android, select Account settings for u/[username] under General.
  • Select Manage notifications. Android places it under Contact settings.
  • Turn off unwanted notification types and review the remaining alerts together.

Why it matters: Fewer prompts can reduce pressure to return. However, muted notifications do not stop app access or enforce a bedtime.

Limit location based recommendations

Location Customization uses a chosen region or an approximate IP location to tailor recommendations. Location customization

  • Open your Avatar, the three line Menu and Settings, then select your username.
  • Under Basic Settings, open Location Customization.
  • Choose No location specified.
  • On the website, open Settings, then Account. Change Location and select Done.

Why it matters: This stops that form of feed customization. Nevertheless, Reddit still uses inferred IP location for other purposes, including ads. Posts can also reveal places independently.

Limit sensitive advertising categories

Teen protections already restrict sensitive advertising. Where manual choices are available, review categories without weakening those protections. Sensitive advertising controls

  • On the website, open Settings and select Preferences.
  • Under Sensitive advertising categories, select Limit ads in selected categories.
  • Enable limits for unwanted categories, including gambling, alcohol or dating where offered.
  • In the app, open your Avatar, the three line Menu and Settings. Select your username and review Sensitive Advertising Categories.

Why it matters: Reddit attempts to reduce those ads, but the choice is not a guarantee. Similarly, category limits do not change data personalization settings.

Cancel an unwanted subscription

Deleting the app or account does not cancel Reddit Premium. Use the provider that took payment. Subscription cancellation

  • Check the receipt to identify Apple, Google Play or direct Reddit billing.
  • For Apple billing, open the Apple App Store’s Manage Subscriptions, select Reddit and cancel the subscription.
  • For Google Play billing, open its Subscriptions, select Reddit and cancel.
  • For card or PayPal billing, sign in to Reddit on the website, open Settings, then Account and Reddit Premium. Follow the cancellation prompts.
  • Check that the subscription shows it will not renew. Reddit advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the subscription ends.

Why it matters: This addresses recurring payment rather than safety controls. Review purchase approval on the child’s device separately and retain the confirmation.

Request a copy of account data

An export lets the account holder review stored information. It is not a way for a parent to access someone else’s account. Data export instructions

  • On a computer, open Reddit’s data request form.
  • Sign in to the account whose information you want to request.
  • Complete the form’s choices and select Submit.
  • Watch the Reddit inbox for the download link. In some cases, Reddit sends it to the account’s verified email instead.
  • Download it to a private location and protect it from shared device access.

Why it matters: Preparation can take up to 30 days. Therefore, request the export before closing the account and avoid sharing its private contents.

Remove your own public posts and comments

Account closure does not remove these contributions. Review them while you still have access. See Post deletion and Comment deletion.

  • On the website, open your Avatar and select Profile.
  • Open Posts. Find your post, open its three dot Menu and select Delete, then confirm.
  • Open Comments. Find your comment, open the menu beneath it and select Delete Comment.

Why it matters: Removing a contribution reduces its display on Reddit. However, deletion cannot recall screenshots or unauthorized copies. Keep safe report details before deleting evidence of abuse.

Delete the account when you are ready

Account deletion is irreversible. Cancel subscriptions and remove unwanted public contributions first. Account deletion

  • Sign in on the website, open Settings and select Account.
  • If you joined through Google or Apple without a Reddit password, first find Account authorization. Select Disconnect beside that provider and create a password when prompted.
  • Under Advanced, select Delete Account.
  • Enter the requested details. Read and select the acknowledgement that deleted accounts cannot be recovered.
  • Select Delete only when you are ready to lose access permanently.

Why it matters: Closure removes access and disassociates the username. Existing posts, comments and messages can remain, and deletion is not a substitute for reporting an active threat.

Reddit Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Review Reddit safety settings as a set. For example, restricting chat will not remove information from a public comment. Similarly, hiding profile activity does not erase contributions elsewhere. Therefore, combine stronger settings with careful sharing and regular conversation.

Finally, keep recovery email access secure and use a unique password. In addition, review the protection of any Apple or Google account used to sign in. No genuine support worker should need your password or authenticator code.

How to Use Reddit Safely

Alongside Reddit safety settings, choose communities with clear rules and active moderation. Before joining, review recent discussions together and agree which subjects your teenager should avoid. Leave communities that encourage secrecy, harassment or moving contact to another app.

Keep real names, schools, live locations and identifiable photographs out of posts. In addition, consider how several harmless details might identify your family when combined. Check claims through reliable sources rather than treating votes or awards as proof.

Agree when to stop scrolling and keep devices away from sleep time. Device family controls can support time boundaries, but they do not turn a public discussion service into a child safe space.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

Scams can resemble helpful advice, investment opportunities or friendly introductions. Verify unexpected requests independently before opening links or sending money. Also, do not download software offered by a stranger or share account recovery codes.

If someone pressures a teenager for sexual images, threatens them or asks for secrecy, involve a trusted adult promptly. Reassure them that asking for help is the right step. Keep safe evidence such as usernames and report details, without forwarding sexual images of children.

For help in Ireland, use CODA’s support resources. In immediate danger, contact local emergency services. The contact form below cannot provide an emergency response.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

These Reddit safety settings can use different labels on web, iPhone and Android. In particular, iPhone mature content preferences require the website. Some teen controls are locked, so do not change a birthday or switch to an adult account to reveal a missing option.

Age assurance and feature availability differ by country. Use the official age help linked above for the current process, and read any verification provider’s privacy explanation before supplying information. Never send identity documents to another Reddit user.

The privacy, reporting and authentication controls in this guide do not require Reddit Premium. A subscription does not remove the need for safe sharing or provide parental supervision.

Safety Checklist

  • Keep the correct age and automatic teen restrictions.
  • Leave mature content disabled.
  • Keep Chat Requests set to Nobody.
  • Remove identifying profile information and review public posts.
  • Practise Block account and Report.
  • Enable authentication and retain recovery access.
  • Agree suitable communities, time boundaries and a trusted adult to approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make all Reddit activity private?

No. Profile visibility controls do not make public community posts private. Therefore, avoid identifying information even when your profile uses a nickname.

Does Reddit have a complete parent dashboard?

Do not assume it does. Reddit’s current teen guidance describes an Apple family approval feature as coming soon. Automatic teen protections and device controls are separate from a complete parent dashboard.

Does the minimum age make Reddit suitable for a child?

No. The minimum account age and the Irish App Store’s 18+ rating describe different things. Families still need to assess content, maturity and the limits of available controls.

Does blurring block explicit content?

No. Blurred material can reveal itself when tapped. Keep mature content disabled and retain the automatic teen restrictions instead of relying on a blurred preview.
