Nintendo family settings help parents manage child accounts, purchases and supported gaming controls. This guide explains how to connect the family group, console user and parental controls app. It covers Switch 2 and the original Switch family, with practical checks for Irish parents. However, settings work best alongside conversations about contact, content and spending.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Nintendo family settings help you supervise accounts, but Nintendo’s name does not make every game or conversation suitable for children. Check each game’s age rating, online features and separate account rules. Also, discuss who your child plays with and what they should do if someone makes them uncomfortable.
For UK and Ireland accounts, Nintendo’s guidance places children aged 15 and under in supervised child accounts. A parent or guardian must be 18 or older. Use an accurate date of birth and your real country setting. These are Nintendo account rules, rather than a statement that every country has the same legal consent age.
How Nintendo family settings fit together
There are three connected parts. Family Group manages accounts and eShop restrictions. The free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app manages supported console restrictions. Individual games and external chat services can have additional settings that you must review separately.
A group can contain up to eight Nintendo Accounts, including one administrator. The administrator manages membership and roles, while parent or guardian accounts manage supervised accounts. A paid Nintendo Switch Online family membership shares subscription benefits. Buying that membership does not automatically configure child protection. See Nintendo’s family role guidance.
Create your Nintendo family group
Create a Nintendo child account
Use an adult account you control, with a secure email address. Avoid letting a child play online through your adult identity. Before configuring Nintendo family settings, check whether the child already has an account so you do not create an unnecessary duplicate.
- Open Nintendo Account and sign in as the adult administrator.
- Select Family group, then Create family group or Add a member.
- For a child aged 15 or under, select Create a child account.
- Enter the requested child details accurately. Choose a distinct Sign-In ID and a strong password.
- Read the Nintendo Account Agreement and Privacy Policy. Confirm only if you agree, then select Continue and OK.
- Return to Family group and confirm the child appears as supervised. Keep adult credentials private.
Why it matters: A separate account lets you apply account restrictions without giving the child your adult access. However, creating the account does not link the console or restrict play time. Nintendo’s member setup guide covers child creation and invitations.
Nintendo account supervision
- As administrator, open Family group and select Add a member.
- For an eligible existing account, choose Invite to family group, enter its registered email address and send the invitation.
- Ask the account owner to accept the invitation using their own Nintendo Account. An account already in another group needs Nintendo’s transfer process.
- For an existing account that needs supervision, sign in as the administrator or parent, select Family Group and choose that account.
- Select Make this account supervised, then OK. The account owner opens the verification email, signs in and selects Accept.
- Check that Supervised appears before setting purchase restrictions.
Why it matters: Group membership alone is not supervision. In addition, an invitation awaiting acceptance has not completed setup. Follow Nintendo’s role instructions if the expected option is missing.
Link a Nintendo Account
- On the console, open HOME Menu, then System Settings.
- Select User and choose the child’s existing console user. Create a separate user first if needed.
- Select Sign in to a Nintendo Account or Link to a Nintendo Account.
- Sign in with the child’s account, check the identity carefully, then select Link and OK.
Why it matters: The console user and the online account are different things. Nintendo says the linked account cannot simply be changed for that user afterwards. Therefore, do not link your adult account as a shortcut. Use Nintendo’s console linking guidance before confirming.
Set Nintendo family spending restrictions
Purchase controls sit on the Nintendo Account website, separately from the app’s play time settings. Also, repeat these Nintendo family settings checks for each supervised account. Also, protect any adult profile available on the same console.
- Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account.
- Open Family Group and select the supervised account.
- Open Spending Restrictions and tick the restriction box to disable purchases and automatic renewal options covered by this setting.
- Open Age-Based Purchase Restrictions and tick the box to limit visible Nintendo eShop content according to age.
- Select Save changes and check both settings again.
Why it matters: Blocking purchases and filtering visible shop content are separate decisions. This is a restriction rather than a monthly euro allowance. It cannot stop purchases through an unrestricted adult account or a different billing service. Nintendo’s eShop restriction guide confirms the current labels.
Link Nintendo Switch Parental Controls
Install the free app through Nintendo’s app download link. Use your adult Nintendo Account and update the app and console first. The app supports Switch 2 and the original Switch family, including OLED and Lite.
- Open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, select Start and read the overview.
- Select Next and choose whether to send app usage data. Select Sign In/Create Account.
- Sign in with your adult account, confirm Select this person, then select Next to display the registration code.
- On the console, open HOME Menu, System Settings, Parental Controls and Parental Controls Settings.
- Select If You’ve Already Downloaded the App. Enter the six digit code and select OK.
- Select Link, then OK on both devices. If controls already exist, use Change Settings, enter the PIN and follow the app linking option.
Why it matters: Account membership does not automatically connect a console to the app. Furthermore, unlinking the app removes its console restrictions, although account eShop restrictions remain separate. Nintendo’s linking guide explains this important difference.
Set content, communication and play time
Nintendo parental controls for software
- In the app, select the console and open Parental Controls.
- Open Restricted Features. Choose a preset or Custom.
- Review Restricted Software, Content Rating System and Free Communication With Others. Use PEGI where appropriate for Ireland.
- Review VR Mode (3D Visuals) where available. On original Switch, also review any supported screenshot sharing restriction.
- Select Save and reconnect the console to the internet.
Why it matters: Console restrictions generally affect everyone using that device. Therefore, choose settings with the youngest player in mind. Read Nintendo’s Switch controls guide rather than assuming a preset covers every concern.
Nintendo parental controls for play time
- In the app, select Parental Controls, then Play Time Limit.
- Choose a daily limit. Use Set Days Individually for different school and weekend arrangements.
- Set Bedtime and the available morning restart time.
- Enable Suspend Software at Set Time if you want play to stop. Otherwise, the limit produces a notification.
- Select Save. Warn your child before play ends so they can save progress.
Why it matters: A reminder is different from an enforced limit. In addition, a console allowance is not a combined allowance across every device your child owns. Nintendo’s Switch 2 control instructions explain time limits and exceptions.
Check exceptions, the PIN and play activity
In the app’s Parental Controls, review Safelist and remove exceptions you no longer intend. A permitted game can bypass software restrictions while remaining subject to play time limits. Also, open PIN to review or change the restriction code and keep it private.
Use Play Activity and monthly summaries to start a conversation about gaming habits. These records are not a transcript of everything said or seen. For example, a short session can still contain a harmful interaction. Ask what happened rather than judging safety from minutes alone.
Nintendo family settings for GameChat
Complete parent and child setup
GameChat combines voice, video and screen sharing on Switch 2. For users under 16, Nintendo requires app based parental controls. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is now required, and the parent setup uses telephone verification. Verification does not establish that every friend is safe.
- Confirm that your adult account is Parent/Guardian, the child is Supervised, and the correct child account is linked to Switch 2.
- In the app, open GameChat, read the explanation and select Next, then Set Parental Controls.
- Select the child. Complete verification of the phone number registered to your adult Nintendo Account.
- Read the service terms before deciding whether to agree.
- With your child, press the console’s C Button, select their user and complete the connection test and introductory screens.
- Review Consent to GameChat Data Processing together. If you agree, complete the consent screen and continue to friend approval.
Why it matters: This is an additional setup, not a feature automatically made safe by joining a family group. Nintendo’s first GameChat setup guide provides the complete sequence and troubleshooting.
Approve friends deliberately
- On the child’s console, choose Select Friends and Request Approval, select the intended friends, then Next, Send Request and OK.
- In your app, open the notification and select Chat approval request received.
- Select a friend, discuss who they are with your child, then select Next and decide whether to approve.
- If approving, add an identifying note, then select Next and OK.
- To remove approval later, select the friend under Friends Approved for GameChat, then Revoke GameChat Permission and Revoke Permission.
Why it matters: A username or familiar avatar does not verify identity. Approval should follow a real conversation, and can be withdrawn. The other participant may also need approval before chat works.
Control video and review chat activity
- In the app’s GameChat settings, select the three dots beside your child’s nickname, then Use of Video Chat.
- Choose approval for each session or do not allow video chat.
- During video chat, open Play Activity, then Video Chat. Choose Face Only, No Background or No Filter and select Save.
- Withdraw the current session’s permission if needed, and review the recorded contacts and session times afterwards.
Why it matters: Camera restrictions do not stop gameplay screen sharing. Filters also cannot guarantee privacy or prevent another person recording what they see. Nintendo’s GameChat safety overview explains those boundaries and reporting.
Share Nintendo family settings
Two parents or guardians can share app controls using their own accounts and phones. First, the administrator invites the other adult into the same family group. Under Family Group, select their account and Set as a parent/guardian. Do not share your password instead.
- Install the app on both phones and link the console on one phone.
- On that phone, select Parental Controls, the Settings icon, Shared Parental Controls and Begin Setup.
- Review the consoles and select Next. Choose the other parent, then confirm with OK.
- Ask the other parent to sign in on their phone using their own Nintendo Account.
- Accept the sharing prompt with Yes and OK. Existing app users can open Shared Parental Controls to continue.
Why it matters: Both adults can change shared settings. Therefore, agree rules and review change notifications together. Nintendo’s sharing instructions also explain how either adult can stop sharing.
Check every console separately
- In the app, open the menu at the upper left.
- Select Add a Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch Console, then Next.
- Use the displayed registration code to repeat the console linking procedure.
- Switch between consoles in the app’s menu and confirm restrictions for each device.
Why it matters: One adult account can directly link up to eight supported consoles. However, a family group is not evidence that every device is protected. Nintendo’s multiple console guide explains selection and sharing.
Review account privacy and security
Limit friend suggestions
- As family administrator, sign in to Nintendo Account.
- Open Family Group, select the supervised account, then Privacy and Other Settings.
- Select Change beside Friend Suggestions.
- Disable suggestions, or expand Set for each service individually to choose services.
Why it matters: Suggestions can connect activity across services. Switching them off does not remove existing friends or replace contact restrictions. Nintendo’s friend suggestion instructions distinguish these settings.
Review services with account access
- As administrator, open Family Group, select the supervised account and open Privacy and Other Settings.
- Select Check under Services with Access to Account Information.
- Expand an unwanted service and select Withdraw consent, then confirm.
For child accounts, Nintendo also documents an older layout: Other Settings, then Change beside account information services. There, clear Sharing of Information and select Save changes to prevent further sharing permissions. Labels can vary as Nintendo updates its account pages.
Why it matters: Review what a game or service receives before approving it. Removing access does not necessarily delete information already supplied to another company. See Nintendo’s current access review guide and its child sharing instructions.
Nintendo account security
- On your own trusted device, sign in to Nintendo Account and select Sign-In and Security Settings.
- Select Passkeys, then Edit. Complete any identity check and choose Register New Passkey.
- Confirm your password if requested, read the explanation, select Register Passkey and follow your device’s prompts.
Why it matters: An adult account controls important permissions. Keep the device locked and avoid registering its passkey on a shared device. Nintendo’s passkey guide lists supported combinations.
Alternatively, eligible accounts can enable Two-Step Verification under Sign-In and Security Settings. Select Edit, complete verification, scan the displayed QR code with an authenticator and submit its code. Save the backup codes privately, then select Backup codes saved and OK. Nintendo says this option is unavailable for child accounts aged 16 and under. Follow Nintendo’s authentication instructions for your account.
Separate free controls from paid subscriptions
Similarly, Nintendo family settings and the parental controls app do not require a paid online family membership. However, optional online services and game subscriptions have their own charges. Check who purchased each subscription, where it was billed and whether renewal is enabled.
- For Nintendo Switch Online, sign in at Nintendo Account portal using the account that purchased it.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online, then the membership under Valid Memberships.
- Select Terminate automatic renewal and repeat the confirmation. Check the displayed membership end date.
- For a game pass purchased through eShop, open Nintendo eShop on the console with the purchasing account.
- Select the user icon, open Pass Settings or Passes, then select Terminate Automatic Renewal for that subscription.
Why it matters: Ending renewal is different from an immediate refund. Leaving a family group or deleting the app is not the cancellation procedure. Use Nintendo’s online membership instructions or its game subscription instructions. For purchases billed elsewhere, contact that billing service.
Nintendo family settings and conversations
Agree when gaming fits around sleep, school and family life. For example, discuss how to finish a match before the limit arrives. Review friends together without demanding that your child prove every conversation was harmless. They should know they can ask for help after making a mistake.
Also, explain that gifts, game currency and promised rewards should never require passwords, verification codes, private images or secrecy. A person can move contact from a game to another app that Nintendo does not control. Therefore, check external services separately and practise leaving an uncomfortable conversation.
If someone threatens or pressures your child, stop contact and use the relevant game or GameChat reporting process. Keep safe identifying details without copying sexual images of children. Contact Gardaí for suspected crime and call 112 or 999 if there is immediate danger. CODA’s support directory provides further routes.
Older devices and regional differences
This account setup is for Nintendo Accounts and supported Switch consoles. It does not remotely manage Wii, Wii U, DS, DSi or 3DS. Those systems need their own local controls and service checks. Similarly, a Nintendo Network ID is not interchangeable with a Nintendo Account.
These instructions use Nintendo’s UK and Ireland guidance. Account ages, labels and services can differ elsewhere. Keep the app and console current, then check the appropriate official guide if your screen differs. Do not enter a false birth date to expose an unavailable option.
Before removing supervision, changing family groups or deleting an account, review Nintendo’s current consequences for that account. Account deletion, console user deletion and resetting a console are different actions. Do not use deletion as the first response to a forgotten password, a billing concern or a safeguarding incident.
Nintendo family settings checklist
- Use accurate ages and a separate child account.
- Confirm the adult role and the child’s supervised status.
- Link the child’s account to the correct console user.
- Set both spending and visible eShop content restrictions.
- Link and check every console in the parental controls app.
- Review software, communication, time limits and exceptions.
- Check GameChat contacts, camera permissions and reporting together.
- Secure the adult account, phone and restriction PIN.
- Review data sharing, subscriptions and any external chat apps.
- Revisit the setup after a new device, game, account change or update.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Nintendo Switch Online family membership?
No. Account supervision and the parental controls app are free. A paid membership provides online benefits rather than switching on all protective settings. Check the requirements of the feature you want to use.
Can every child have a separate console time allowance?
Nintendo’s general console restrictions apply across users of that device. Do not assume each child receives an independent app allowance. However, supervised account eShop settings and supported GameChat approvals are account related.
Does removing the app leave all protections active?
Unlinking the console removes its app managed restrictions. Account eShop restrictions are separate. Therefore, check both layers before changing phones, unlinking devices or handing the console to someone else.
