Qustodio parental controls help parents manage websites, apps and screen time across their children’s devices. For example, families use the service to set routines, review activity and receive alerts about some concerning interactions. This guide explains parent and child setup, what the controls do and the important differences between devices. However, monitoring should support regular conversations and growing independence.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Qustodio is a supervision service for a parent or guardian. However, an app store rating describes the app, rather than making every monitored app suitable for a child. Therefore, enter accurate child details and keep the parent account private. Explain sensitive features such as message alerts and location sharing before using them. Controls cannot guarantee safety or replace a trusted adult.
Qustodio Setup and Restrictions
Set Up the Parent Account
Use the Parents App on your own device or the Qustodio family dashboard. Installing only the parent app does not protect a child’s device.
- Create your parent account through the official Qustodio website or Parents App. Use an email account only you can access.
- Add your child’s profile and enter their details accurately.
- Install the Kids App Qustodio on each child device and sign in with the same parent account.
- Assign each device to the correct child. Keep the parent password private and review the suggested rules.
Why it matters: Correct profile assignment keeps reports and restrictions attached to the intended child. In particular, devices assigned to one child share rules and the daily allowance. Separate profiles permit separate device rules but also separate allowances.
Install the Kids App on Android
Android setup requires physical access and permissions that support filtering, activity reports and removal protection.
- Download Kids App Qustodio from the official app listing on the child’s device.
- Open it, choose I have an account and sign in. Confirm protection and select the child.
- Name the device and complete each permission screen in the installation wizard, including accessibility, usage access and device administration where requested.
- Return to the Parents App and confirm that the child’s device reports activity. Review the official Android installation guide if a permission remains incomplete.
Why it matters: Missing permissions can prevent enforcement. Furthermore, Android manufacturers use different permission screens. Calls and text monitoring require a different official installation route described below.
Install the Kids App on iPhone or iPad
The iOS app needs its management profile and location permission for the corresponding features. Use a supported, updated device.
- Install Kids App Qustodio, choose I have an account, sign in and select the child.
- Name the device and start protection. Allow notifications and download the Qustodio profile.
- Open Settings and Profile Downloaded. Select Install, enter the device passcode and review the management notice.
- Complete Install and Trust, then return through the confirmation notification. Allow configuration to finish and choose Manage when prompted.
- For location monitoring, choose Allow While Using App and then Change to Always Allow. Check protection in your Parents App.
Why it matters: A management profile gives the service significant control. Do not remove a school or workplace profile to make room for it. Seek help if installation requires changing browser security protections.
Install Qustodio on Windows or Mac
Use the parent administrator account for installation and a separate standard login for your child.
- Open Qustodio downloads on the child’s computer and choose its operating system.
- Run the official installer, review the terms and choose Accept and Install.
- Select the existing account option, enter your parent login and choose Next.
- Name the computer and select the child profile. Complete the device configuration prompts.
- Open your parent dashboard and check the computer appears under Devices.
Why it matters: Installation initially applies the selected child profile across computer logins. Therefore, review individual account assignments next. Keep your administrator login private. If existing security software conflicts, ask support for a compatible setup rather than leaving antivirus or a firewall disabled.
Assign Computer Logins to the Correct Child
Shared computers need individual account assignments to avoid mixing children’s activity or monitoring an adult unintentionally.
- Open the parent menu and select Devices. Choose the Windows or Mac computer.
- Under Assign to:, select the default child profile for newly created computer users.
- Select each existing computer user and assign the appropriate child profile. Repeat for every child login.
- For an adult login that should remain outside supervision, choose Don’t protect.
Why it matters: A new or guest login can change who receives the rules. As a result, check both existing users and the default for new users. Do not assume one child profile correctly represents everyone sharing the computer.
Install Qustodio on a Chromebook
Chromebook setup has two parts: the Kids App for apps and a Chrome extension for browsing.
- In the child’s Chromebook session, open Google Play, find Kids App Qustodio and select Install.
- Open it, choose Log In, review the terms and enter your parent login. Name the Chromebook and choose Next.
- Select the child, choose Let’s do it! and grant the requested permissions, including Activate accessibility for Qustodio.
- Choose Go to Chrome Store, Add to Chrome and Add extension. Confirm installation.
- Select Connect now, then Open, to link the extension.
- Open chrome://extensions, find Qustodio, select Details and enable Allow in incognito.
- Under Chromebook Settings, Device, Power, choose Sleep for charging, battery and closed cover options where available. Repeat setup for each child session.
Why it matters: Both components matter. Otherwise, app protection alone leaves browsing gaps. The Chromebook may appear as Android in the parent app. School policies can restrict installation or power settings, so involve the school rather than changing its management.
Install Qustodio on Kindle or Amazon Fire
Fire tablets need a standard user profile with the required administration permissions. Qustodio does not work in Amazon child profiles.
- In the standard profile, open Appstore, search for Qustodio Kids and choose Download.
- Open the app, sign in with your parent account and select Protect this device.
- Name the tablet, select Next, choose the child and select Let’s do it!.
- For Allow Accessibility, choose Allow Now, open Qustodio and enable accessibility.
- For Allow usage tracking, choose Allow Now, open Qustodio and enable Permit usage access.
- Allow notification access. Choose Activate now, then Activate this device admin app and All done!.
Why it matters: Changing from an Amazon child profile changes which native protections apply. Therefore, plan and test the replacement rules before handing the tablet back. Amazon device coverage does not establish that Android phone features such as SMS are available.
Qustodio Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Qustodio Daily Time Limits
Daily allowances and the action at the limit are separate choices.
- Open the Parents App, select the child and open Rules then Daily time limits.
- Select each day and set its allowance. Use Block for a full day block or Allow for unrestricted daily time.
- Open Settings within that page and choose Lock navigation, Lock device or Alert me.
- Test the chosen action with your child before relying on it.
Why it matters: Alert me sends a notification rather than enforcing a block. For example, Lock navigation restricts internet use, while offline apps can remain usable. Lock device blocks apps on Android, hides apps on iOS and ends the desktop session. iOS app hiding can disturb the home screen layout.
Qustodio Routines for Bedtime and Study
Routines apply scheduled rules. Older subscriptions may show Restricted times instead.
- Select the child and open Rules then Routines.
- Choose Add a routine and select a suitable preset such as Bedtime or Study.
- Review the allowed apps and websites, select days and times, then choose Save routine.
- For a custom routine, choose the device block or app and website rules option. Set exceptions, decide whether use counts towards the daily allowance and save the schedule.
- If your plan shows Restricted times, open it, enable Apply restricted times and mark the periods to restrict.
Why it matters: Custom app and website routines depend on the subscription. Therefore, give essential tools deliberate exceptions. Also check the outcome on each operating system.
Pause Access and Add Extra Time
A temporary exception avoids changing the regular weekly plan.
- For one child, open What’s happening now, choose Pause, set a duration and select Confirm. Use Play to end it.
- For everyone, use My Family, Family pause, choose the duration and select Start pause.
- To extend today’s allowance, open the child’s What’s happening now card, choose Quick actions then Add extra time, set the amount and confirm.
- If the allowance has already ended, use the plus icon to add time. To change it later, use the card’s Settings then Edit extra time.
- For supported iOS extra time requests, open Notifications center in the Parents App and accept or decline. Manage requests in its Settings.
Why it matters: An internet pause does not necessarily stop offline activities. In contrast, extra time extends today’s daily quota without removing other restrictions. Pause overrides scheduled time rules.
Qustodio App Rules and Allowances
App controls vary by operating system and by whether the app is supported.
- Open the child’s Rules then Games & apps.
- Review category rules and use App exceptions to find an individual app.
- Choose Allow, Block or Set time limit, where your plan provides that option.
- On Android, use Always allowed only for apps that must remain accessible during a navigation lock.
Why it matters: Always allowed apps still count towards daily time and do not bypass a device lock. However, iOS controls depend on supported apps and network activity. Blocking an app does not control every website offering the same service.
Qustodio Website and Search Filters
Web categories reduce access to unsuitable sites, while exceptions handle individual addresses.
- Open Rules then Web filtering. Review each category and choose the appropriate allow, block or alert action.
- Add specific website exceptions for sites you want to allow or block.
- Open the web filtering settings and enable Safe Search if appropriate. Review the option to block unsupported browsers.
- Test a harmless site and an exception in the browser your child normally uses.
Why it matters: An alert does not block access. In addition, Safe Search helps with supported Google and Bing searches and YouTube Restricted Mode. However, it does not filter every search service, private message or AI response. Qustodio does not provide arbitrary keyword blocking.
Qustodio YouTube Monitoring
YouTube monitoring provides selected viewing and search information rather than supervision of every video service.
- Open the child’s dashboard or Timeline and review YouTube activity. Use View details for the relevant entry.
- Open Rules then YouTube Monitoring to manage the website restriction.
- To prevent access through both routes, also block the YouTube app under Games & apps. Set an app allowance where supported.
Why it matters: Android and iOS support app and website monitoring. In contrast, desktop coverage concerns the website. Website access is an allow or block choice rather than a separate YouTube website time allowance.
Qustodio Social and Gaming Alerts
AI alerts can flag selected concerning interactions. They are not complete records of every conversation.
- Keep the Parents App and Kids App updated. Review Rules and Social monitoring for the supported services.
- On Android, social monitoring is enabled by default. Review notification preferences if you do not want alerts.
- For supported iOS social monitoring, first complete the computer based calls and messages setup. Check the official iOS instructions for the services currently covered.
- For Windows gaming voice alerts, open Rules, Smart alerts then Gaming and enable the supported games you want to monitor.
- Review flagged items in Notifications center and the child’s Timeline, then ask your child about the context.
Why it matters: Android social coverage includes selected WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X and LINE interactions. iOS social alerts cover WhatsApp and LINE through the computer sync setup. Gaming voice alerts cover supported Roblox, Steam, Fortnite and Valorant activity on Windows 10 at 64 bit or Windows 11. However, false alerts and missed concerns remain possible.
Monitor Calls and Messages on Android
The Google Play Kids App does not include this feature. Use only Qustodio’s official full version instructions if you choose this sensitive monitoring.
- On the child’s Android device, open Qustodio’s official full Kids App download instructions and use its download button. Do not use an APK from another website.
- If Android asks for installation permission, review Settings and Allow permission for that official download. Select Install then Open.
- Sign in, assign the child and finish protection setup, including the requested calls, contacts and SMS permissions. Restart the device.
- In the parent dashboard, select the child and open Rules then Calls & messages. Enable monitoring.
- Review incoming and outgoing call rules. Use Add a number to set an individual allow or block exception and select Save.
- Under message options, choose Show message content only if needed and discussed with your child.
Why it matters: Coverage differs by message type and app. In particular, do not assume RCS, MMS or third party messaging is included. Contact Qustodio if setup asks you to weaken device security or change mobile network settings.
Sync iPhone Calls and Messages
iOS monitoring requires a separate app on your Windows or Mac computer. It is not a live feed while your child is away.
- Check the official iOS calls and messages requirements. Use an already protected iPhone or iPad and a supported Windows or Mac computer.
- Download Qustodio’s calls and messages app from the official help page and sign in. Choose Let’s start.
- Connect the unlocked child device by cable and accept Trust on that device. Install any required official driver when prompted.
- Select the recognised device, continue and choose Sync now or Sync.
- Keep the computer app running and both devices on the same WiFi for later wireless updates.
Why it matters: Sync can update periodically at home, rather than continuously everywhere. iOS does not support Qustodio call blocking. Therefore, protect the computer because the synchronised data is sensitive.
Qustodio Location and Saved Places
Location monitoring follows the device and can show its last known position.
- Select the child’s Rules then Location and enable monitoring. Confirm location permission on the child device.
- Open Family Locator and select the child to see their device.
- Use My places to add an address, or choose Add to your places from a location entry in Timeline.
- Review arrival and departure alerts. Remove a saved place when you no longer need its alerts.
Why it matters: A phone may be offline, left elsewhere or have an inaccurate position. Moreover, location history is limited, and parents cannot set a guaranteed update frequency. A map is not confirmation that a child is safe.
Enable the Android Panic Button
This optional Premium feature contacts trusted people. It does not contact emergency services.
- Open the child’s Rules, choose Panic Button and enable it.
- Choose Invite trusted contact, enter the appropriate phone or email details and ask that person to accept.
- Show your child the SOS option in the Android Kids App. Explain how starting and stopping an alert works.
- Agree with trusted contacts how they will respond. Arrange a clearly agreed practice before relying on it.
Why it matters: Trusted contacts must understand their role. SMS charges can apply. However, the feature depends on the phone and connectivity, so your child still needs a direct way to seek emergency help.
Check Protection and Prevent Removal
Permissions and removal protection require continuing checks, rather than a one time installation.
- Review the child’s dashboard, Timeline and protection alerts. If activity stops, check connectivity, permissions and app updates on the child device.
- For supported iOS devices, back up the device before using optional Qustodio Advance on your computer.
- Sign in to Advance, choose Install anti-tampering, connect the child’s device by cable, unlock it and choose Trust. Confirm the correct device with Next.
- Follow the remote management prompts without disconnecting. If setup temporarily requires Find My to be turned off, restore it after completion.
Why it matters: Advance has specific iOS compatibility limits. It is not supported on iOS 27 or later according to the current help page. Do not downgrade an operating system for it. A tampering alert should prompt a conversation and a permissions check.
Add or Remove an Additional Parent
Eligible accounts can invite one additional parent using their own login.
- Open Account and find Additional parent.
- Enter the trusted adult’s email and select Invite now. Ask them to use the email link and Create account.
- Check that the invitation shows as confirmed.
- To withdraw access, return to Additional parent, select the trash icon beside the address and confirm Remove. For a pending invitation, choose Cancel invitation.
Why it matters: The additional parent can see activity and change rules with broad access. Therefore, do not treat this as a limited viewing role. The feature is unavailable for accounts protecting only Windows and Mac computers. Check the invitation address carefully.
Privacy, Reports and Ending Monitoring
Review activity with your child and retain only what your family needs. Protect your email, computer and parent password because reports can include sensitive conversations and locations.
- Open the parent menu, Account then Notifications. Set Daily Email Reports and Weekly Email Summary as needed.
- For blocked site emails or search alerts, open the child’s Rules, Web Filtering then Settings. Review blocked site notifications and Searches.
- For social alert delivery, use Rules, Social Monitoring and the Alerts gear. To stop collecting a supported app’s conversations, turn that app off in Social Monitoring.
- For message alerts, open Rules, Calls & messages, the Messages page and Messages alerts.
- For new app emails, use Rules, Games & Apps and Settings. This notification is unavailable on iOS.
- Before closing an account, uninstall protection from each child device using Qustodio’s official removal instructions and your parent credentials.
- Cancel app store subscriptions separately through Apple or Google.
- Use Close your Qustodio account to review the consequences and complete closure. Account history and rules cannot be recovered after closure.
How to Use Qustodio Safely
First, agree what you will monitor before switching it on. Then explain which limits apply and how your child can ask for help. Also agree when you will review the rules together. For example, schoolwork, accessibility tools and contact with trusted adults may need exceptions. Finally, test these together before relying on a block.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
However, controls cannot identify every scam, harmful conversation or unsafe person. For example, a permitted app can contain grooming, bullying, sexual pressure or misleading AI responses. Therefore, set privacy, contact and purchase controls inside each app as well. An alert is a reason to check calmly with your child. It is not proof that they have done something wrong.
If something worrying happens, help your child block and report the account through the relevant app. Also keep useful usernames, links and dates. However, do not forward sexual images of a child. In an emergency involving immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. For other concerns, seek appropriate safeguarding support. CODA education does not replace an emergency response.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Qustodio offers child protection across Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Kindle, but every feature is not available everywhere. Check the official download and feature requirements for the exact device. iOS installation currently requires iOS 15 or later. Child requirements include Android 9 or later, Fire OS 6 or later, Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.15 through macOS 26. Chromebooks need Google Play access. Parent apps have different requirements: iOS 16 or later, or Android 7 or later. Check Qustodio’s current requirements before purchase, especially after a major operating system upgrade. Linux is unsupported.
Subscriptions, Renewal and Cancellation
The Free plan covers one device. Basic covers up to five devices with core controls. Complete adds advanced controls and family device coverage without a fixed household device count. The website showed £43.95 a year for Basic and £75.95 for Complete during research. These are displayed GBP prices, not an Irish euro quote. Confirm local currency, tax, renewal price and feature entitlement before paying. For direct website payments, manage auto renewal through Qustodio Customer Portal. For Apple or Google purchases, manage the subscription with that store. Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing.
Safety Checklist
- Confirm the correct child profile and every device they use.
- Check permissions and protection status after software updates.
- Test a harmless blocked site, an app limit and the bedtime rule together.
- Keep trusted contact and accessibility tools available.
- Review reports calmly and reduce unnecessary monitoring as independence grows.
- Record the full subscription cost, renewal date and cancellation route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Qustodio read every conversation?
No. Coverage depends on the operating system, app, subscription and setup. An activity entry is not the same as access to message contents.
Can my child still contact me during a block?
This depends on the device and type of lock. Test calls and essential apps together. Do not assume that every emergency route remains available.
Does paying for Complete remove device limits?
It changes feature and household device coverage. It does not remove Apple, Android, browser or app restrictions.
