Norton Family parental controls help parents set house rules for websites, apps and device use. For example, families can review browsing and manage supported Windows computers, Android devices, iPhones and iPads. In particular, this guide explains setup and the differences between monitoring, warnings and enforced blocks. A parent’s dashboard can work on a device that Norton cannot protect as a child device.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
This is a parent supervision service. However, the suggested age restriction level is a starting point, rather than proof that every allowed website is suitable. Therefore, use accurate child details and review the rules together. Norton Family does not provide complete access to private conversations. It cannot guarantee that a child is safe or identify every harmful interaction.
Norton Family Setup and Restrictions
Create the Parent Account and Child Profile
You need a Norton account with Family entitlement, either separately or within an eligible subscription.
- Sign in to your Norton account. In Parental Controls, choose Set up Family.
- Read the service terms before choosing Agree & Continue.
- Enter the child’s name, choose an avatar or photo and select the age based restriction level. Choose Next.
- For mobile management, install Norton Family Parental Control on your own device and sign in as the parent.
- Review the child’s default house rules before installation on their devices.
Why it matters: Correct profiles keep settings separate. In addition, Norton supports up to 15 child profiles. First, check whether your existing subscription includes Family before buying another plan.
Secure the Parent Login
The parent account can expose sensitive activity and location information.
- Sign in to Norton and open your profile icon then Account Settings.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and choose Set Up. Verify your email if requested.
- Choose Mobile authenticator app, Security key or Mobile phone number and complete its verification prompts.
- Save the supplied recovery codes privately. Choose Finish.
- Under Backup Methods, choose Add a new method and configure a different supported method.
Why it matters: A second verification method helps protect the account and makes recovery possible if the primary method is unavailable. Therefore, keep recovery codes away from shared devices.
Install on the Child’s Windows Computer
Install in the child’s actual Windows environment and map every account they use.
- From Norton Family setup, select the child and Windows PC, then download the official installer on that computer.
- Run the installer, review the licence and choose Agree & Install.
- Choose Continue. In the assignment window, select Edit beside the child.
- Choose signs in as, select the child’s Windows login account and save with Save then OK. Include any other accounts they use.
- Enable the Norton Family extension in each supported browser. Check that activity reaches the parent dashboard.
Why it matters: An unassigned Windows login can escape the intended rules. For this reason, keep the parent administrator login private and give your child a separate standard account.
Install on the Child’s Android Device
Android protection requires permissions for the individual controls.
- Select Android in setup and use its QR code or official download link on the child device. Install and open Norton Family.
- Review the terms. Choose Start Activation, enter the code in the parent portal and select Activate, then confirm the correct child on their device. Alternatively, sign in and select that child directly.
- Name the device. Enable Device Administrator, Accessibility and App Usage Access when the setup wizard requests them.
- In the child app, open the profile icon then Permissions. Resolve warnings for Draw Over Apps, Location, Phone and notifications as relevant.
- Confirm the required permission checks before selecting Continue.
Why it matters: Usage access supports time and app supervision. In addition, location permission supports the map, while device administration helps prevent removal. However, Private Space, guest accounts and other Android profiles can leave gaps. Do not delete private data as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Install on the Child’s iPhone or iPad
iOS uses the Norton browser, a filtering VPN and a management profile for different features.
- Select iOS in Norton Family setup and use the official app download on the child’s device.
- Open the child app, allow notifications and review the terms. Activate with the parent portal code or sign in and assign the correct child.
- Choose Install VPN and finish the device permission prompts.
- Choose Install Profile and follow the profile download and installation screens in Settings.
- For location, open iOS Settings, Privacy or Privacy & Security, Location Services, then Norton Family and select Always.
- Open Settings, General, Background App Refresh and allow refresh for Norton Family.
Why it matters: The profile is required for instant lock and scheduled restrictions. In particular, detailed search and video reporting relies on the Norton Family browser. However, the VPN does not turn every other app into a fully monitored browser. Do not remove a school management profile without the school’s help.
Complement Norton Family with Apple Controls
Apple’s own controls can cover gaps in Norton’s iPhone supervision. The menu layout differs before and after the newer Screen Time upgrade.
- In the newer family layout, open Settings, Family, select the child and open Apps & Websites. Enter your parent Screen Time passcode if requested.
- Choose App Store to review installation settings. For purchase approval, use Restrictions, Ask to Buy and Require Purchase Approval.
- For an age based content limit, return to the child’s Content & Privacy Restrictions, select a content type and choose an appropriate rating.
- On older layouts, use Settings, Screen Time, the child and Content & Privacy Restrictions. Review app installation, deletion and purchase options there.
- Check Apple’s current parental control instructions for the exact version. Test essential communication before enforcing a new rule.
Why it matters: Norton cannot supply every iOS app or purchase restriction. In addition, Apple settings can affect Norton installation and filtering. Keep the parent passcode private, and review these controls after a major software update rather than copying an older screenshot.
Norton Family Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Norton Family Website Rules
Use the website dashboard for these instructions. The Android parent app has a separate House Rules interface.
- Select the child in your Norton account. In Web, open the settings icon and switch supervision on.
- Review Restriction Level and the default house rules for the age range.
- Under Supervision, choose Block for enforcement, Warn for an alert or Allow for reporting without a restriction.
- Review Web Categories and the uncategorised sites option under Others.
- Open Exceptions, choose Add, enter the address and select Block the website or Allow the website, then Add Site. Remove an exception through its menu and Delete.
Why it matters: Warnings and reports do not prevent access. Therefore, check what each category toggle means in the current dashboard and test a harmless example. For example, filtering may block embedded content without blocking the whole page.
Norton Family Search Supervision
Search supervision records supported searches and can enable filters on supported search engines.
- Select the child in the parent website. Open the settings icon in Search.
- Switch search supervision on.
- Enable the search filtering option and save any changes.
- If using the Android parent app, select the child, Rules, Activities and Search supervision. Enable it and select Turn filters on.
Why it matters: Supported services include Google, Bing, YouTube, Ask and Yahoo. However, search supervision does not inspect every search app, private conversation or AI chatbot. Therefore, use the supported browser and extension for reliable reporting.
Norton Family Time Limits and Curfews
Time supervision differs significantly between iOS and other child devices.
- In the parent website, select the child and open the Time settings icon. Switch supervision on.
- Select the device and review Restriction Level. On Windows, choose Monitor for reminders or Block to enforce the rule.
- Under Allowed and blocked hours, choose each day, set the daily allowance where available and mark the permitted and blocked hours.
- Use Apply these rules to all devices only if you want matching settings, then choose Save.
- Test the curfew and the limit on each child device.
Why it matters: Daily allowances and time calculations apply to Windows and Android. However, iOS supports scheduled restrictions, rather than a daily usage quota. Limits are per device. For example, two hours on each of three devices can permit six hours altogether.
Use Norton Family Instant Lock
Instant Lock sends a lock command to the child’s online devices. Check the scope before confirming.
- Sign in to the parent dashboard and select the child profile.
- Choose Lock Child’s Devices or the child’s lock icon. In the Instant Lock window, choose Lock.
- When the break ends, return to the child’s lock control and choose Unlock Child’s Devices, then Unlock.
- Check the child devices receive the change before relying on it.
Why it matters: A remote lock needs connectivity. Moreover, iOS requires the Norton management profile and does not accept the Android emergency PIN. Test your child’s essential contact routes with them, rather than assuming every lock works in the same way.
Set the Norton Family Emergency PIN
The device PIN lets a child unlock their Android device when necessary, including after the daily limit or Instant Lock.
- Select the child in the parent website and open the Time settings.
- Find Set Device PIN and turn it on.
- Choose Edit, enter a private four digit PIN and complete the confirmation.
- Explain the emergency purpose to your child, ensure they can use it when needed and change it after temporary access.
- On the child’s Android app, open the profile icon, Permissions, then Phone and approve the requested contact permission if incomplete.
Why it matters: An emergency bypass should be usable when needed. However, this PIN does not unlock an iPhone or iPad. Phone permissions support emergency contact during restrictions, but verify the actual contacts and calling behaviour on your child’s phone before relying on it.
Norton Family School Time
School Time limits browsing during study periods. It is not a second general device time allowance.
- On the parent website, select the child and open the School Time settings icon.
- Turn Scheduler on and choose the days and hours. Use Apply these settings to all days only when appropriate.
- Review Web Categories, Allowed Websites and Restricted Websites. Add the actual school addresses needed and choose Save.
- For a temporary session, choose Instant School Time, select the duration and Enable now. Use Disable to end it early.
Why it matters: School Time usage on Windows and Android is counted separately from ordinary device use. Therefore, test school sign in, embedded media and accessibility tools before lessons. However, a site being educational does not make every interaction on it safe.
Norton Family App Supervision
App supervision is supported on Android and eligible Windows desktop apps. It is not an iOS app blocker.
- Select the child in the parent website and open the App settings icon.
- Switch app supervision on and review the app list.
- Change the individual app switch to block or allow the intended app, checking its displayed status. Choose Save.
- On the Android parent app, use the child’s House Rules, App, then the relevant device platform. Select apps under All Apps to block or under Blocked Apps to allow.
Why it matters: Windows coverage excludes Microsoft Store and UWP apps and apps running as services. In addition, app usage time reporting requires Android 8 or later. Avoid blocking tools your child needs to contact a trusted adult.
Norton Family Video Supervision
Video supervision reports supported website viewing. It does not cover every video app.
- Select the child in the parent website and open the Video settings icon.
- Switch video supervision on and review the listed supported websites.
- Review the child’s video activity and discuss concerning entries together.
- Keep the Norton browser extension enabled on Windows. Use the Norton Family browser on mobile for supported activity.
Why it matters: Coverage includes YouTube in browsers and Hulu on Windows. However, video supervision does not monitor viewing inside the YouTube app. Similarly, Android Chrome playlist viewing can leave reporting gaps. Use the platform’s own child content settings as well.
Norton Family Location and Favourite Places
Location follows a supported mobile device and depends on permissions and connectivity.
- Select the child and open the Location settings icon. Turn location supervision on.
- Enable the intended device in the list and choose Save.
- Under Favorite Locations, choose Add Location, enter an address and name, and set the boundary radius.
- Select the arrival and departure alerts you want, then choose Save.
- Use a location’s menu and Edit or Delete to change or remove it.
Why it matters: A location can be approximate or out of date. Therefore, check its timestamp before reacting. App and feature availability vary by region. The published iOS exclusion list does not list Ireland, but verify the feature on your actual account.
Review Reports, Permissions and Account Data
Review the child’s activities and alerts in the parent dashboard. Weekly or monthly email reports summarise supported web, search, video, app and device activity. They do not establish that every device or browser is covered. In addition, check alerts about permissions, browser extensions and protection status promptly. Review email reporting preferences and protect the receiving account.
Before ending supervision, use the official removal instructions for each device while you still have parent access. However, account closure, deleting a child profile and cancelling subscription renewal are separate actions. For a data access or deletion request, use Norton’s official account and privacy support. Do not factory reset a child device simply to cancel billing.
How to Use Norton Family Safely
First, agree what you will monitor before switching it on. Then explain which limits apply and how your child can ask for help. Also agree when you will review the rules together. For example, schoolwork, accessibility tools and contact with trusted adults may need exceptions. Finally, test these together before relying on a block.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
However, controls cannot identify every scam, harmful conversation or unsafe person. For example, a permitted app can contain grooming, bullying, sexual pressure or misleading AI responses. Therefore, set privacy, contact and purchase controls inside each app as well. An alert is a reason to check calmly with your child. It is not proof that they have done something wrong.
If something worrying happens, help your child block and report the account through the relevant app. Also keep useful usernames, links and dates. However, do not forward sexual images of a child. In an emergency involving immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. For other concerns, seek appropriate safeguarding support. CODA education does not replace an emergency response.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Child protection supports Windows, Android and iOS. Norton Family does not protect a child’s Mac. However, a parent can still use a Mac browser to manage supported devices. iOS lacks daily quotas and app supervision. In addition, text message supervision and call blocking are currently disabled on Android. Norton’s system requirements and regional listing should be checked before purchase. Never downgrade an operating system to match an old help article.
Subscriptions, Renewal and Cancellation
The Norton Ireland page lists parental controls within eligible Norton 360 plans. During research, its one year Deluxe offer was €39.99 initially and €109.99 at annual renewal. Premium showed €49.99 initially and €119.99 at renewal. These are full security bundles, rather than a standalone Family price. Confirm the current offer and account entitlement before paying. For example, compare the full initial payment and renewal price, rather than a promotional monthly equivalent. To stop direct Norton renewal, sign in, open My Subscriptions, find the plan and choose Cancel Subscription Renewal or Manage Renewal. Under Plan Renewal, choose Unsubscribe and complete the confirmation screens. Keep the confirmation. App store purchases must be managed through the original store. Uninstalling does not cancel the subscription.
Safety Checklist
- Confirm the correct child profile and every device they use.
- Check permissions and protection status after software updates.
- Test a harmless blocked site, an app limit and the bedtime rule together.
- Keep trusted contact and accessibility tools available.
- Review reports calmly and reduce unnecessary monitoring as independence grows.
- Record the full subscription cost, renewal date and cancellation route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Norton Family protect a child’s Mac?
No. Managing the parent dashboard from a Mac does not provide child Mac protection.
Does Norton read text messages?
Android text message supervision and call blocking are currently disabled. Do not buy it expecting those features.
Will the iPhone stop after two hours of use?
Not through a Norton daily quota. Use scheduled Norton restrictions and consider the child’s Apple Screen Time settings for a usage allowance.
