Bark parental controls help families receive alerts about supported content, schedule internet access and review device location. This guide focuses on the Bark app for existing family devices, with important differences for its separate hardware products. However, Bark currently lists app availability in the United States and its territories, South Africa and Australia. Ireland and the UK are not listed. Confirm regional eligibility before considering a subscription. Monitoring should support conversations and growing independence, rather than replace them.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Bark is a supervision service for parents and guardians. Its app rating does not make a monitored game or social service suitable for every child. Therefore, check each service’s age requirements and explain the monitoring in advance. Bark asks for parental verification during signup. Review its account terms, permissions and privacy information before connecting a child’s accounts. Reports can include information about other children too. Alerts are possible concerns, not proof of wrongdoing or a guaranteed emergency response.
Bark Setup and Restrictions
Choose the Right Bark Plan and Region
Bark Jr and Premium have different monitoring scope. Hardware plans add separate costs and controls.
- Check Bark’s official availability information before starting signup.
- Compare Bark Jr for supported schedules, internet blocking and location with Bark Premium, which adds content monitoring alerts.
- Check the child device’s compatibility and any extra computer, Bark Sync or Bark Home requirement for iPhone monitoring.
- Review local price, tax, trial renewal and any equipment agreement before paying.
Why it matters: Ireland and the UK are absent from the app’s published country list. Moreover, a US hardware price or English language website does not establish local shipping or service support. Do not change account region or use unofficial downloads to work around availability.
Create the Bark Parent Account and Child Profile
A profile associates the child’s connected accounts, devices and rules.
- Use Bark’s official signup or parent app to create the parent account with a private email and strong password.
- In the parent dashboard, scroll to the bottom of the profile list and select +Add.
- Choose Another child, enter accurate child information and submit.
- Select the child’s device types to follow the relevant setup instructions.
- For a shared family device, create a clearly named profile and agree who its rules will cover.
Why it matters: A child profile differs from a home group used with Bark Home. In addition, a profile in the dashboard does not mean its devices or accounts have finished connecting.
Protect the Bark Parent Login
The account lock adds a PIN after inactivity. It does not replace a strong account password.
- Open the parent app or dashboard and select Account.
- Scroll to Enable lock.
- Set a four digit PIN that your child cannot guess.
- Review access on every parent device and keep account recovery email private.
Why it matters: The help says the lock applies after one hour of inactivity. Therefore, lock your phone itself as well. Anyone using the main account can potentially view alerts or change family rules.
Connect an Android Phone or Tablet
Bark Kids for Android uses Bark’s official download route and powerful permissions.
- On the child device, open Bark’s official Android download page and choose Download for Bark Kids.
- Open the official download and review Android’s app installation permission. Grant only the access needed for that verified source.
- Install and open Bark Kids. If device security blocks installation, use the current provider support route to resolve compatibility rather than disabling protection broadly.
- On your parent device, open Account, then Device codes. Enter that code in Bark Kids on the child device.
- Complete its disclosure screens and Get Started checklist. Review accessibility, media, SMS, contacts, notifications and location access.
- For background location, review Permissions, Location and Allow all the time. Complete background data and battery permission prompts for the actual manufacturer.
- Approve the documented Bark VPN connection when prompted, then open Bark Kids Settings and Test Monitoring.
Why it matters: The official app is not the same as installing only the parent app. Moreover, Android 13 and later can require Allow restricted settings for accessibility. The setup guide also calls for DNS changes that affect privacy. Review those requirements with support before altering a working setup.
Check Android Network and Permission Requirements
Filtering can conflict with encrypted DNS, other VPNs or restrictions on app installation.
- Use the provider’s Android installation checklist to review any unresolved permission item.
- If Family Link controls app installation, use the current Bark and Google guidance for the specific installation permission instead of removing all Google supervision.
- Review the documented Use secure DNS browser setting and Android Private DNS if the filter test fails.
- Ask support to confirm the privacy and compatibility implications before changing those network protections.
- Return to Test Monitoring and the parent device’s Devices status to confirm the outcome.
Why it matters: A completed download alone does not establish filtering. However, permanently disabling unrelated security or ignoring a device warning is not a suitable general troubleshooting method. Keep the protection arrangement understandable and test it after updates.
Connect an iPhone or iPad for Blocking and Location
The iPhone Bark Kids app provides supported filtering and location. Deeper content monitoring needs another setup.
- Install Bark Kids from the official Apple app listing on the child device.
- On your parent device, open Account, then Device codes.
- Enter the code in Bark Kids and review the permission prompts.
- For location, choose the offered permission and later confirm Always for background updates.
- Allow the Bark VPN configuration and enter the device passcode when required.
- In the parent app, open the child’s Devices, choose the device and check Connected via Bark Kids App (VPN) and its Last Seen Status.
Why it matters: This setup does not by itself provide iPhone text and photo monitoring. Moreover, Apple does not let Bark fully lock its VPN settings, so native app removal restrictions do not eliminate every gap.
Set Up iPhone Monitoring with a Computer
The Desktop App scans the iPhone at home and sends selected concern alerts. It is not live remote access to every message.
- In the parent app, select the child, choose the add icon, Set up Monitoring, then Apple/iOS.
- Choose Monitor with computer and install the official Bark Desktop App on your private Windows or Mac computer.
- Open it, choose Setting up the first time, then Connect to your account. Use Already set up before? only for an existing setup.
- Connect the child iPhone or iPad by USB and select the intended device in the setup prompts.
- On the child device, select Trust this computer and enter its passcode. On Mac, use Finder, Locations, the device and Trust if required.
- Complete the initial scan and the current local network discovery prompts. On Mac, the guide identifies System Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network and Bark.
- Leave the computer awake and on the same home network for later scans. In the parent app, open the child’s Devices to check detection and scan times.
Why it matters: The current desktop guide also asks for the home network’s Private Wi-Fi Address to be off for discovery. This is a privacy setting change for that network, so review it deliberately. Scans occur after reconnection and can need the device passcode again. Protect the computer and collected data.
Set Up iPhone Monitoring with Bark Sync
Bark Sync is an additional charger and analyser, with its own equipment cost.
- Plug the Sync into power within home WiFi range, but leave the child device disconnected initially.
- Install and pair Bark Kids using the parent Device codes, then complete its location and VPN setup.
- In Bark Kids, open Sync, then Add Bark Sync.
- Follow the wizard to connect the supplied cable, approve local network access and connect Sync to the intended WiFi network.
- Enter the child device passcode for trusting Sync and enabling scans as requested.
- Start the initial scan and check its completion. Afterwards, use the child’s Devices screen or Sync to review scanning status.
Why it matters: The first scan can cover substantial previous content and take time. Moreover, later scans depend on the child plugging in and Sync remaining connected. A hardware lease is separate from Bark Premium, and it does not create continuous monitoring while the child is away.
Enable Bark Safari Monitoring
The Safari extension can report selected browsing titles and searches on iPhone.
- Install and pair Bark Kids first.
- On the child iPhone, open Settings, then Apps, Safari and Extensions, using the equivalent Safari route on older iOS.
- Choose Bark for Safari and allow the extension.
- Under All Websites, choose Allow for the intended monitoring scope.
- Review the current Bark setup instructions if Apple restrictions temporarily prevent enabling the extension. Restore appropriate native restrictions after setup.
Why it matters: Website access is a significant permission. Furthermore, Safari monitoring does not cover every other browser or private app. The provider describes selected titles and searches, not an unrestricted recording of all iPhone activity.
Connect an Amazon Fire Tablet
Fire uses the Amazon app listing and its own permission screens.
- Open Appstore on the child tablet and find Bark for Kids.
- Choose Download, then Open.
- Get a Device code through Account on the parent device and enter it on the tablet.
- Complete the Get Started checklist, including location and accessibility where requested.
- If Amazon child profiles control accessibility, review the documented Parental Controls, Household Profiles, child profile and Accessibility route.
- Open Bark Kids Settings, choose Test monitoring, then check the tablet under the parent child profile’s Devices.
Why it matters: Fire controls and phone features differ. Therefore, confirm the tablet can install the current Amazon app and test its actual rules. Account based social monitoring still needs the relevant accounts connected separately.
Set Up Bark on a Chromebook
Premium uses browser extensions plus the supported Chromebook app. Jr uses the app without Premium content monitoring.
- Sign in to the Chromebook under the child’s Google account.
- For Premium browser monitoring, install Bark for Chrome and Bark for Chrome Watchdog from Chrome Web Store.
- Connect the child’s relevant email account to Bark and review the Chrome sync settings for extensions, history and settings.
- Open each extension’s Manage Extension and enable Allow in Incognito if that mode is available and intended to remain usable.
- For the child app, open Google Play Store, install Bark for Chromebooks and enter a parent Device code.
- Complete the app’s VPN, accessibility, location and background permission prompts. Review the guide’s Secure DNS requirement with support if needed.
- Browse harmless pages, then confirm the extension under Apps and the Chromebook under Devices in the parent profile.
Why it matters: School policies can prevent extensions or Play Store installation. Therefore, involve the school rather than bypassing its management. Repeat setup for every child browser session and check guest access.
Monitor Chrome or Edge on a Child Computer
Windows and Mac browsing monitoring uses extensions. Filtering a whole computer is a different layer.
- Open the child’s own computer login and sign in to the intended browser profile.
- In Chrome Web Store, install Bark for Chrome and Bark for Chrome Watchdog for Chrome.
- For Edge, open Extensions, then Get extensions for Microsoft Edge, and add Bark for Microsoft Edge and its Watchdog extension.
- Connect the child’s relevant Google or Microsoft account to Bark. Use the child connection invitation if appropriate.
- Open each extension’s management screen and review Allow in Incognito or Allow in InPrivate if private browsing is permitted.
- Browse several harmless pages and check the child’s Apps in the parent dashboard for a healthy connection.
Why it matters: These extensions monitor supported browsing and searches. In contrast, they do not establish complete filtering of every computer app. Whole home filtering needs Bark Home or another appropriate control, and other browser profiles can create gaps.
Connect Email and Social Accounts
Account connections are separate from installing the child device app.
- Open the child’s profile in the parent dashboard and choose the add icon.
- Select Set up Monitoring, then the supported app or email service.
- Choose the offered connection method. If appropriate, select My kid will connect this account so the child completes the official connection.
- Follow that service’s authorisation screens and review the requested access together.
- Repeat for other relevant accounts, then check the connection under the child’s Apps.
Why it matters: Coverage depends on the service, operating system and connection method. Moreover, an account being connected does not mean every feature or encrypted conversation is accessible. Use only official authorisation pages and never send account passwords to another person.
Bark Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Bark Routine Schedules
Routines apply different internet rules at particular times. Default rules apply outside other scheduled routines.
- Open the child’s profile and scroll to Schedule.
- Choose +Add for a routine such as Bedtime, School time or Free time.
- Set the intended days and hours. Review the Default rules for all other times.
- Use the routine’s edit control to change its schedule and the calendar to review the week.
- To remove a routine, open it from the calendar and use its trash control.
Why it matters: Rules may take a few minutes to apply. In addition, a routine controls when access is available, rather than measuring a daily app allowance. Preserve tools needed for learning, accessibility and contact.
Bark App and Website Rules
Bark can restrict supported internet access by service or category.
- Open the child profile and choose Apps & internet.
- Choose Rules under the routine you want to change.
- Expand the relevant category and block or allow the service. Use search if needed.
- Review broad categories such as games or social media and any individual exceptions.
- Wait for the change to reach the device and test its effect with your child.
Why it matters: On an ordinary child phone, a blocked app can remain installed and retain offline use. For example, it may show a connection error rather than disappear. App installation approval and contact approval are separate Bark Phone features.
Bark Custom Website Exceptions
Custom addresses can override a broader category rule.
- Open the child’s Apps & internet, then Rules for the intended routine.
- Choose Custom content.
- Use Block access to add a specific unwanted address, or Enable access for a deliberate allowed exception.
- Check the address and apply the change. To remove an exception later, select the X beside it.
Why it matters: An exception can weaken a category block. Therefore, keep it precise. Do not broadly allow Uncategorized Apps & Sites or Unidentifiable Traffic merely to fix one blocked app without understanding what else becomes accessible.
Bark Bonus Time and Rule Copying
A temporary routine override avoids rewriting the regular weekly schedule.
- Open the child profile and scroll to Schedule.
- Choose Start or Delay, then Start Now for the routine that provides the agreed temporary access.
- To copy rules, open the receiving child’s Apps & Internet, then Rules for its routine.
- Choose Import Rules from the quick actions and select the relevant child or routine as directed.
- Review every copied exception and the resulting schedule.
Why it matters: A younger sibling may need different rules. Moreover, Override just for today for measured app time limits is described for the Bark Phone, rather than every ordinary Android or iPhone installation.
Bark Internet Pause
Pause restricts supported internet access while ordinary cellular calls and SMS can remain available.
- Under the child’s name in the parent app, choose Pause.
- Select a duration rather than leaving an unintended indefinite pause.
- Wait for the device to receive the rule and confirm essential contact routes together.
- To restore access, choose Un-pause, then check that the regular app and website rules still apply.
Why it matters: An internet pause does not stop every offline app. In contrast, Bark Phone and Watch pause can also block texting, with their own emergency call behaviour. Test your actual product rather than assuming all pause controls work alike.
Bark Alert Delivery
Parent contact methods determine who receives notifications.
- Open Account, then Notifications.
- Add the intended parent email and supported phone number. Do not enter the child’s contact details as a parent alert recipient.
- Enable push notifications for the parent app in the phone’s system settings.
- Review preferences for Weekly Recap and Moments if those communications are useful.
- Open Alerts or the bell to review a notification and its context.
Why it matters: Bark sends selected concern alerts rather than every interaction. Moreover, blocked site notifications are narrower than the complete blocking history. Check connectivity and notification delivery rather than assuming silence means no concern.
Bark Alert Sensitivity
Sensitivity changes the volume of alerts for each child and concern category.
- Open the child profile and choose Want fewer alerts?.
- Use the dropdown beside each alert type.
- Consider All initially and review Severe if minor alerts overwhelm you.
- Repeat for each child and revisit the choices as needs change.
Why it matters: Some categories offer All or None rather than a full sensitivity range. However, false alerts and missed concerns remain possible. A severe alert still needs calm human judgement, not an automatic assumption about the child.
Review Ignored Bark Alerts
Ignoring selected contacts or content can reduce noise while also creating a monitoring gap.
- Open the bell, then the relevant alert.
- Use its crossed out bell only if you deliberately want to silence future alerts for that contact, group, song or subscription.
- To review exceptions, open the child profile, Want fewer alerts?, then Ignored alerts.
- Use the trash beside an ignored item to restore its normal alerts.
Why it matters: The provider says severe issues can still generate alerts, but that is not a guarantee of detection. Therefore, revisit ignored items and avoid silencing someone solely because the child already trusts them.
Bark Additional Parent Alert Contacts
Additional contacts receive alerts, while full alert viewing uses the main account credentials.
- Open Account, then Notifications.
- Choose email or text and select Add for the intended trusted adult.
- Check the contact details and agree how alerts will be handled.
- To stop delivery, use the remove icon beside the address or number.
- If full account access should end, review the shared main login separately rather than relying only on removing an alert contact.
Why it matters: Removing notifications does not necessarily revoke knowledge of the account password. Moreover, the text alert help supports US, Australian and South African numbers, consistent with its regional limits.
Bark Location Permissions
Background location needs deliberate permission on the child device.
- On Android, open Settings, Apps, Bark Kids, Permissions, then Location.
- Choose Allow all the time, enable precise location and review background data and battery access.
- On iPhone, open Settings, Apps, Bark, then Location and choose Always with Precise Location.
- For iPhone background updates, review Background App Refresh and Cellular Data.
- In the parent app, open Map and check the child device’s latest update.
Why it matters: A WiFi only device can report only when connected. Furthermore, a phone left elsewhere does not establish the child’s location. Native Apple or Google permission restrictions can help preserve the agreed setup.
Bark Favourite Locations and Driving Information
Saved places provide arrival and departure alerts, while trip information offers additional context.
- Open Map in the parent dashboard. On mobile, expand the up arrow.
- Open Favorite locations, choose the plus and enter the address or name.
- Select the correct address and adjust the pin or radius if necessary.
- Review which child should trigger notifications for the place.
- For available trip information, open Map, Family Activity, then the child to review journeys and reported speed.
Why it matters: The current guide describes one week of location history for supported products. However, GPS, battery settings and connectivity can delay or distort alerts. Check-ins are a legacy feature and should not be promised to new accounts. Driving records do not prove who drove.
Bark Removal Protection and Apple Restrictions
Android and iPhone have different protection against removal or changed permissions.
- On Android, confirm Bark Kids setup is complete and wait the documented five minutes before testing its device code protected removal.
- On iPhone, use a parent controlled Apple Screen Time passcode and the current Content & Privacy Restrictions setup to restrict deleting apps.
- In older Apple layouts, the documented route is iTunes & App Store Purchases, Deleting Apps, then Don’t Allow.
- For location changes, review the native Location Services restriction and Don’t Allow Changes where shown.
- After setup, confirm Bark’s VPN status and test the agreed rules again.
Why it matters: Apple menu labels vary by version. Moreover, Apple app removal restrictions do not fully lock the Bark VPN configuration. Do not describe these settings as impossible to bypass or change a school’s management profile.
Bark Insights and Account Health
A healthy connection is different from simply having an app icon installed.
- Open the child’s Insights to review available activity summaries, newly installed apps and recently blocked services.
- Check Apps and Devices for connection indicators.
- Open any Fix it, Protection at risk or Action Required notice and follow its current repair guidance.
- For filtering, select the device and review Status, then Last seen.
- For iPhone content monitoring, check the latest scan separately from the Bark Kids VPN status.
Why it matters: Some detailed app use and Advanced Insights features are specific to Bark Phone or Watch. In addition, a healthy VPN does not prove the iPhone message scan is current. Review each layer and avoid interpreting summaries as a complete record.
Bark Assistant and AI Monitoring Limits
Bark’s assistant can find information and change settings in the parent account.
- Open the parent dashboard and select Ask Bark.
- Specify the intended child and ask for an explanation before requesting a rule change if you are uncertain.
- Review the child’s resulting routine or app rule after any assistant action.
- Check an AI interpretation against the actual alert and talk with your child.
Why it matters: The assistant can apply changes, so protect parent account access. Furthermore, AI detection is not a diagnosis or proof of grooming. The device feature list includes selected Android AI chat coverage, but that should not be described as coverage of every chatbot, voice session or deleted message.
Stop Monitoring an Account or Retire a Device
Disconnecting one account differs from uninstalling a child app or ending billing.
- Open the child profile and choose Apps or Devices.
- Select the connected platform and choose Stop Monitoring if you no longer need that collection.
- For a lost, traded in or retired device, choose it under Devices and select Remove device.
- For a replacement device, perform its setup again and check the new connection rather than assuming the old settings migrated.
Why it matters: Stopping monitoring ends alerts for that connection. However, deleting a dashboard entry does not necessarily uninstall the software or cancel payment. Review privacy and the remaining devices separately.
Uninstall Bark from a Family Device
Use the parent authorised removal method, then check the dashboard separately.
- On an ordinary Android device, press and hold Bark Kids and select Uninstall, or drag it to that option.
- Enter the parent Device code when requested, then repeat the uninstall action to finish.
- On iPhone, use Remove App for Bark Kids. If Apple blocks removal, adjust the parent’s app deletion restriction for this authorised task.
- For the desktop sync app, choose Exit Bark on Windows or Quit Bark on Mac before using the operating system’s normal uninstall method.
- After retiring a sync computer, review the child’s Devices and the available I don’t use this home computer anymore option.
Why it matters: A hardware Bark Phone or Watch has a separate service and unlock process. Therefore, do not follow ordinary phone app removal steps for that hardware. Uninstalling does not cancel a subscription.
Cancel Bark and Request Data Removal
Cancellation follows the original purchasing channel and can involve separate equipment obligations.
- Uninstall Bark Kids from ordinary family devices when ending protection, after planning a replacement if needed.
- Open the parent Account screen and choose Cancel my account.
- If billed by Apple, manage the original Apple account’s Subscriptions instead. Follow any affiliate billing instructions shown.
- Review equipment return or outstanding balance information for leased or financed hardware.
- For earlier data deletion, contact Bark through its official support route and clearly identify your request.
Why it matters: The current cancellation help says other account data is deleted after fifteen days and earlier removal can be requested. Moreover, notification access continues only within the paid period. Keep cancellation confirmation and do not assume uninstalling stops payments.
Bark Hardware and Coverage Differences
Bark Phone and Watch include built in controls with separate device and wireless costs. For example, the Phone has app approval, contact management and measured app time controls that should not be promised for every ordinary iPhone or Android installation. Bark Home filters devices on the home network and can support iPhone scanning, but it does not follow every device onto other networks. Check hardware region, model and plan separately. A broad coverage list is not confirmation that every feature works in Ireland.
How to Use Bark Safely
First, agree what you will monitor before switching it on. Then explain which limits apply and how your child can ask for help. Also agree when you will review the rules together. For example, schoolwork, accessibility tools and contact with trusted adults may need exceptions. Finally, test these together before relying on a block.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
However, controls cannot identify every scam, harmful conversation or unsafe person. For example, a permitted app can contain grooming, bullying, sexual pressure or misleading AI responses. Therefore, set privacy, contact and purchase controls inside each app as well. An alert is a reason to check calmly with your child. It is not proof that they have done something wrong.
If something worrying happens, help your child block and report the account through the relevant app. Also keep useful usernames, links and dates. However, do not forward sexual images of a child. In an emergency involving immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. For other concerns, seek appropriate safeguarding support. CODA education does not replace an emergency response.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Bark’s app is currently listed for the United States and its territories, South Africa and Australia. Ireland and the UK are not listed. Android support is described from version 8, while Fire requires the current Amazon app and Chromebook coverage depends on the app, extensions and account policies. Check current iPhone and parent app requirements before purchase. The Desktop App’s published Mac minimum is 10.15, while its Windows list includes older releases. These are compatibility statements, not advice to use an unsupported operating system. Use a secure current computer and confirm its exact compatibility.
Subscriptions, Renewal and Cancellation
The current US help lists Bark Jr at $5 monthly or $49 annually, and Bark Premium at $14 monthly or $99 annually, plus tax. Both advertise unlimited family child profiles and devices. Premium adds monitoring alerts, while hardware or Sync costs are separate. A seven day app trial is advertised. These dollar prices are not an Irish euro offer and do not override Bark’s availability restrictions. Confirm the original purchasing channel, full renewal charge and any hardware lease before paying. Cancellation, uninstalling and a request for earlier data deletion are separate actions.
Safety Checklist
- Confirm the correct child profile and every device they use.
- Check permissions and protection status after software updates.
- Test a harmless blocked site, an app limit and the bedtime rule together.
- Keep trusted contact and accessibility tools available.
- Review reports calmly and reduce unnecessary monitoring as independence grows.
- Record the full subscription cost, renewal date and cancellation route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a family in Ireland assume Bark is available?
No. Ireland and the UK are absent from the current app availability list. Confirm eligibility directly rather than changing region or using an unofficial installer.
Can Bark show every iPhone message immediately?
No. Deeper iPhone monitoring uses a computer or supported Bark hardware and scans after connection. It does not provide an unrestricted live feed while the child is away.
Does blocking an app stop every offline activity?
No. Ordinary phone filtering restricts supported internet access. Bark Phone has additional controls, while offline apps and other devices can leave gaps.
