Perplexity Safety Settings

Perplexity logo for the safety settings guide

Perplexity safety settings help families review the AI search assistant’s saved sessions, memory and use of personal data. Perplexity combines generated answers with links to sources. Teenagers may use it to research schoolwork or explore interests. However, a source link does not prove that the answer accurately reflects the source.

For parents, begin with the age rules and account type, then review the controls that apply to your device. This guide separates protective settings from family advice. In addition, check permissions again after a major update or a change of account.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Perplexity’s consumer terms require users to be at least 13. A minor below the age of majority can use it only if a parent or guardian accepts the terms on their behalf. Children under 13 are not permitted. An app store rating is separate from this account rule and does not guarantee that search results are suitable. Read the provider’s age guidance.

The consumer settings reviewed here do not provide a linked parent dashboard or a guaranteed child content mode. Parental consent is not a content filter. Use a genuine account age, agree clear boundaries and review the child’s experience together. Do not assume a paid plan adds family supervision. Review the relevant account guidance.

Restrictions Available

Use Family Boundaries Alongside the Account

Where no service level child control is offered, device restrictions and family agreements can limit access.

  • Use your device’s family controls to restrict the Perplexity app and website if it is unsuitable for the child.
  • Next, agree which research tasks need an adult present and how the child can stop an uncomfortable search.

Why it matters: However, a device rule does not make every result appropriate. In addition, another browser, account or device can weaken an access restriction.

Perplexity Safety Settings

Some Perplexity safety settings depend on the plan, region or account. Use the version specific instructions below, and keep the provider’s help page open if your menu differs. A missing option should never be treated as an active protection.

Perplexity: Opt Out of AI Data Retention

This setting controls future data use for model training, rather than deleting the account.

  • Select your profile icon and open Account settings.
  • Next, open Preferences and the Artificial Intelligence section. Turn off AI data retention or the displayed AI Data Usage equivalent.

Why it matters: However, the opt out applies to later data. In addition, previously collected training data cannot be removed through this switch, and operational processing continues.

Review Search History, Notes and Brain

Memory controls are separate from the training choice.

  • Open Settings and Memory.
  • Next, turn off Use search history and Notes if you do not want these used for personalization.
  • Finally, for an eligible Max account, review the separate Brain control for Computer.

Why it matters: However, a switch can stop future use without clearing stored entries. Therefore, review the saved memory bank as well.

Perplexity: Delete Saved Memories

Remove information you no longer want used for future answers.

  • Open Settings, Memory and Manage memories.
  • Next, select the trash icon beside an entry or use Clear all to remove the memory bank.

Why it matters: However, a safety or debugging log can remain for up to 30 days. Therefore, delete related sessions separately to remove their influence.

Start Incognito Searches

Incognito separates a session from ordinary history and personal memory.

  • Select the profile icon at the bottom left and choose Incognito.
  • Next, check the incognito indicator before searching. Use the incognito icon to leave the mode.

Why it matters: However, incognito sessions expire within 24 hours and cannot be recovered. In addition, this is not anonymity from the service or a guarantee that a result is suitable.

Perplexity: Minimise Profile and Location Details

Profile information can make answers more personal but can expose unnecessary details.

  • Open the profile menu and My Account. Review the name, username and profile picture.
  • Next, open Personalize. Remove unnecessary information from Introduce yourself and review Location.
  • Finally, decline unneeded precise location access in the browser or device permission prompt.

Why it matters: However, a service may still estimate location from the network. In addition, for a young person, choose a nonidentifying avatar and avoid a school name or routine.

Delete Sessions, Projects and Uploaded Material

Session deletion is also the route to remove its uploaded files.

  • Open Perplexity Library and select the session, project or Page.
  • Next, open More beside the title, select Delete and confirm.
  • Finally, to remove uploaded files or images from a session, delete that entire session.

Why it matters: However, deletion cannot recall copies already shared elsewhere. Therefore, check whether a project contains other material before removing it.

Perplexity: Review Connected Accounts

Linked services extend what Perplexity can access.

  • For Perplexity Computer, open Plugins in the sidebar, then Installed. If the rollout has not reached your account, use Customize and Connectors and Skills.
  • Next, open an unwanted connector and select Disconnect. This removes that connection wherever Computer uses it. Older account settings may still offer My Connectors.
  • Finally, also review the authorised connection in the provider account if you need to revoke its access.

Why it matters: A connection can expose information beyond the current question. However, uninstalling a plugin leaves its connectors connected. Disconnect them separately. Existing sessions can still contain information already retrieved.

Manage Renewal and Store Billing

Check the current paid subscription before a trial or billing period ends.

  • Open the profile menu, My Account and Manage subscription.
  • Next, review the active plan and use the available cancellation option. If the receipt identifies an app store, follow that store’s subscription management route.
  • Finally, check that the plan is no longer set to renew and retain the confirmation.

Why it matters: However, removing an app does not stop recurring charges. In addition, ask support about the billing route if it is unclear from the receipt.

Perplexity: Delete the Account

Account deletion removes the profile and associated saved data after the deletion process completes.

  • Open account details or the profile menu and My Account.
  • Next, at the bottom, select Learn more beside account deletion. Review the popup and confirm if you intend to close the account.

Why it matters: Deletion can take up to 30 days. Therefore, signing back in before completion can cancel the request, while completed deletion cannot be reversed.

Perplexity Safety Settings for Actions

Review Project Access

Projects can hold files, memory and connected tools.

  • Open the project and select its member list or Share at the top right.
  • Next, review the people and their roles. Keep access limited to people who need the material.

Why it matters: However, invited people can access project material. Personal projects use invited access, while enterprise accounts can offer wider organisation access.

Revoke Local Folder Access

Desktop access can allow the app to change files inside approved folders.

  • On Mac, open Settings and Permissions. Remove unneeded folder access.
  • On Windows, open Settings, Devices and Local file system access. Remove unneeded access.

Why it matters: However, removing a folder from a request only deselects it. Therefore, review saved permissions before assuming access has ended.

Review Devices and Saved Credentials

Remote tasks use the selected device’s permissions.

  • Open Settings and Devices to review available computers. Change permissions on the device they apply to.
  • Separately, open Credential vault in account settings. Review saved credentials and avoid Always allow where you want approval before reuse.

Why it matters: However, project credentials can be used by others with project access. Do not put a personal secret in a shared project.

Stop Recurring Tasks

Older scheduled searches and Computer automations have separate controls.

  • For older searches, open Settings, Notifications and the individual task, then select Delete.
  • For Computer tasks, open Automations, then the task’s Actions menu. Select Pause or Delete.

Why it matters: However, deletion is permanent. Use pause when you want to keep the schedule and history.

Perplexity Safety Settings for Computer Memory

Brain has its own controls for supported Max and Enterprise Max accounts.

  • Open Settings, Memory and Brain. Turn Brain off to stop new knowledge being written.
  • Open Memory to inspect Brain entries and delete or correct unwanted information.
  • In a project’s Memory settings, the owner should review the shared memory toggle and turn off Use session creator’s memory if personal context should stay outside the project.

Why it matters: Training opt out does not disable Brain. Furthermore, a project’s shared memory is visible to its members, while switching memory off does not clear existing entries.

How to Use Perplexity Safely

For school research, open each cited page and check whether it actually supports the claim. Look for the author, publication date and original evidence. In addition, inspect a session before sharing it and avoid making private family questions public. Keep browser agents such as Comet and action tools separate from ordinary research until their permissions are understood.

Review Perplexity safety settings together, then ask for explanations rather than accepting an answer you cannot follow. For example, compare a generated summary with the original material and check unfamiliar links before opening them. Keep passwords, addresses and private photographs out of prompts, even when a privacy switch is off.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

AI can produce persuasive errors, imitate people and generate harmful material. A friendly reply can also encourage someone to reveal more than they intended. Therefore, discuss what your family considers private and how to leave an uncomfortable interaction without shame.

Never use an assistant’s reassurance as proof that a person, investment or link is genuine. If another user pressures a young person to send images, money or passwords, stop the interaction and seek help. In addition, agree a human contact for problems that feel difficult to explain.

Report Problems and Protect Sign In

The help menu provides a support route for account and response problems.

  • Open Help and Contact Support. Describe the issue without including passwords or unrelated private files.
  • Protect the Google, Apple or other account used to sign in with its own additional verification and recovery settings.

Why it matters: A support request does not enforce child content limits. Keep recovery access secure and sign out shared computers.

Listen calmly if your child reports a worrying experience. For urgent safeguarding concerns, seek appropriate help rather than waiting for a platform reply. In immediate danger, contact emergency services on 112 or 999 in Ireland. CODA’s contact form is for education enquiries.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

In Ireland, the UK and the USA, follow the service’s current terms and the controls available to the actual account. Privacy law and a provider’s minimum account age are separate matters. A privacy consent rule does not give a child permission to ignore a stricter service age limit.

For privacy concerns, start with the provider’s support or privacy request route. Families in Ireland can consult the Data Protection Commission’s parent guidance. UK families can use ICO guidance, while US families can consult FTC children’s privacy guidance. These resources explain rights and reporting, rather than certifying any app as safe.

Perplexity Safety Settings Checklist

  • Confirm the service age rules and use the correct account type.
  • Review saved activity, memory, sharing and connected services.
  • Protect sign in, recovery access and the devices used.
  • Check purchases and renewal dates before accepting a trial.
  • Practise how to stop a chat, report a problem and ask a trusted person for help.

Perplexity Safety Settings FAQ

Do these settings make Perplexity safe for every child?

No. Begin with the provider’s age rule and suitability for the individual child. Controls reduce particular risks, while content and the way someone uses an assistant can still cause problems.

Does turning off training delete conversations?

No. Training choices, history deletion and memory are separate controls. Review each one and check information already shared with other services or people.

Should a parent share an adult login?

Avoid sharing an adult account. It can expose private history, payment details and connected services, while bypassing protections attached to a correctly identified teen account.
