Meta AI Safety Settings

Meta AI logo

Meta AI safety settings help parents review Meta’s assistant on its own app and website. It can answer questions, draft text and generate media. Teenagers may also encounter it in Instagram, Facebook, Messenger or WhatsApp. However, controls differ between these experiences, and public Vibes sharing adds social risks.

For parents, begin with the age rules and the service your family actually uses. Then review the controls below with the eligible account holder. In addition, revisit permissions after an update. A missing option should never be treated as an active protection.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Meta’s current help says users below 13, or 14 in certain regions, cannot use Meta AI. Supervision is for eligible users aged 13 to 17, or 14 to 17 in those regions, with an adult aged 18 or older. An app store rating does not replace account eligibility. Read the current account guidance.

Use the correct birth date and the actual teen profile. Both people must agree to supervision, and either can remove it. Supervision ends automatically at 18. It does not let a parent read or listen to conversations, reset a password or post for the teen. Local availability can further limit access. Review the relevant provider guidance.

Restrictions Available

Parent: Invite a Teen to Supervision

Use separate eligible profiles. The invitation alone does not activate supervision.

  • Parent: In the Meta AI app, open Menu and Settings. Under Tools and resources, open Family Centre.
  • Next, select Continue, find the teen’s profile or share an invitation link, then select Send invitation.
  • Finally, teen: Open the received link and follow the displayed instructions to accept. Parent: Check that the teen appears as supervised.

Why it matters: Invitations expire after seven days. Also agree how to discuss concerns, because supervision can be removed and does not cover another account.

Teen: Request Supervision

A teen can begin linking from their own safety settings.

  • Teen: Open Menu, Settings and Teen safety settings.
  • Next, select Parent or guardian, Continue, the parent’s profile and Send request. A link can also be sent.
  • Finally, parent: Open the request and follow the instructions to accept. Check the linked profile before managing controls.

Why it matters: The link needs acceptance from the other person. Therefore, check setup together rather than assuming a sent request is already protecting the account.

Choose Limited Content

This is the more restrictive of Meta AI’s two current teen conversation settings.

  • Parent: Open Menu, Settings and Family Centre. Select View beside the teen.
  • Next, under What they can see, open Content setting.
  • Finally, select Limited content and Confirm. Review any request to change to Ages 13+ before approving it.

Why it matters: This setting applies to the Meta AI app and AI glasses. However, it does not apply to Meta AI conversations in the other Meta apps.

Review Topic Insights

Insights show broad topics rather than transcripts.

  • Parent: Open Menu, Settings and Family Centre. Select View beside the teen.
  • Next, under Their AI interactions, select Topic insights. Open a topic to read what it covers.

Why it matters: A topic label cannot explain everything a teen experienced. Therefore, use it to begin a calm conversation rather than treating it as evidence of misconduct.

Meta AI Safety Settings

Some Meta AI safety settings depend on the device, region or account. For example, an app control may not apply to a website or a separate product using the same model. Read confirmation messages carefully, and pause if the available option differs from the task you intend.

Meta AI: Delete Stored Chats and Generated Media

Deletion of private history is separate from removing public Vibes.

  • In the app, open Menu, Settings and Data & privacy.
  • Next, select Manage your information, Delete all chats and media and Delete all if you intend to remove them.

Why it matters: Public Vibes are not removed by this history action. Also review shared links and material posted by other people.

Remove Public Vibes

A creation can remain public after history deletion.

  • Open Menu, Settings, Data & privacy and Manage your information.
  • Next, select Remove all public vibes and Remove all. For one Vibe, open your profile, select it, then its Menu and Remove from feed.

Why it matters: Generated media may remain in your own media area. In addition, this cannot recall screenshots or copies made elsewhere.

Meta AI: Stop Vibes Suggestions on Other Apps

A public creation may be suggested on Instagram or Facebook.

  • Open Menu, Settings and Data & privacy.
  • Next, select Suggesting your vibes on other apps and turn off the unwanted Facebook or Instagram suggestion option.

Why it matters: The setting applies across Meta AI and Vibes. However, it does not make an existing public creation private or erase it.

Limit Comments and Block Unwanted Profiles

These controls reduce social contact around public creations.

  • On the Vibe, select More and Limit comments to restrict replies to you and Meta AI.
  • Next, to block a person, open their profile from their name. Select More, Block and confirm Block.

Why it matters: Blocking also applies to Vibes, but earlier media that includes you can remain. Therefore, report harmful material and review any existing copies.

A link can expose a conversation outside the account.

  • Open Menu and select the conversation under Chats.
  • Next, open the top right Menu and select Delete link.

Why it matters: Recipients lose access through that link. However, they may already have copied the conversation, so avoid sharing private prompts in the first place.

Disconnect External Apps

Connections can give the assistant access to email, calendars or other information and actions.

  • Open Menu, Settings and Accounts Centre.
  • Next, select Your information and permissions and App Connections.
  • Finally, choose the app, then Disconnect and Yes, disconnect. Review the connection in the outside provider too.

Why it matters: Accounts in the same Accounts Centre can use connected data. Therefore, check every connection and avoid exposing a family mailbox unnecessarily.

Meta AI: Export the Account’s Information

Downloading information is different from deleting it.

  • Open Menu, Settings, Data & privacy and Manage your information.
  • Next, select Download your information, Export your information and Create export.
  • Finally, select the profile, Next and Export to device. Choose the scope, dates, format and notification details, then Start export.

Why it matters: The export can contain private material. Therefore, keep it in a protected location and do not put it on a shared family computer.

Review Camera, Microphone and Location Permissions

Device permissions control access to sensors and selected files. Give only the access needed for the current task.

  • On Android, open device Settings, Apps and Meta AI. Open Permissions.
  • Next, select each permission and choose Don’t allow for unnecessary access. For a needed feature, choose a limited option where the phone offers it.
  • Finally, on iPhone or iPad, open Settings and Privacy & Security. Review Microphone, Camera, Photos and Location Services for this app.

Why it matters: Permissions do not remove files or recordings already uploaded. Therefore, keep other people out of voice and camera sessions and review access after updates.

Meta AI: Review AI Training Objections

Training choices differ by region and data type. A public data objection is not a universal switch for every AI interaction.

  • For an eligible EU account, open the official Meta AI data use notice in the app or Meta’s generative AI Privacy Centre.
  • Next, use the current objection form offered for your account, read its scope and submit only the information requested if you want to object.
  • Finally, keep the confirmation and ask Meta privacy support about any remaining use that concerns you.

Why it matters: Do not assume an EU form offers identical rights or effects in the UK or USA. Also keep sensitive details out of prompts while a request is pending.

Review Memory Separately from History

Meta has described memory that personalises later answers. Treat remembered details as a separate privacy issue.

  • Review memory controls offered in the actual Meta AI experience, alongside its current help guidance.
  • Next, use the available memory deletion control for unwanted details. If the route is unclear, ask Meta privacy support how to inspect and remove them.
  • Finally, review related chats and connections separately rather than assuming one deletion clears every source.

Why it matters: Memory availability varies across experiences. Therefore, do not apply Muse’s separate memory file instructions to the Meta AI assistant.

Meta AI: Protect Sign In and Recovery Access

Use a separate eligible account and keep its recovery method private. This is practical account protection, rather than a claim that this app offers a particular security switch.

  • Use a unique password wherever you create a password for Meta AI. Protect the email inbox used for recovery.
  • Next, if you sign in with Google or Apple, open that provider’s account security settings and enable its additional sign in verification.
  • Finally, sign out on shared computers. Never give another person a login code, even if a message claims to come from support.

Why it matters: A person with account access may read saved conversations. In addition, a secure login cannot stop a user voluntarily sharing private material.

Meta AI Safety Settings for Your Likeness

Likeness permissions affect who can create images or videos featuring you. Available options vary by age and country.

  • In the Meta AI app, open Menu, your profile picture and Your likeness. Choose Only me to restrict creation to yourself.
  • Next, to remove the onboarding photo and voice recording, scroll within Your likeness and select Delete.
  • Finally, open Your likeness, then Media that includes me. For an unwanted vibe, select Options and Delete. For a draft, open it and select Delete.

Why it matters: Deleting your likeness leaves existing media in place until you remove it separately. Also, permissions apply across Meta AI and Vibes and cannot retrieve copies saved elsewhere.

Understand the Remaining Limits

The steps here cover Meta AI’s app controls. The exact current assistant memory panel, complete profile deletion route and account specific notification settings still need checking. Instagram’s distress alerts are a separate supervised experience, not a guaranteed alert from every Meta AI conversation. Do not assume parental content settings offer a universal off switch. Muse is a separate agent product and is outside this guide.

How to Use Meta AI Safely

Agree which Meta app your teen actually uses, then review that app’s own safety settings. An assistant inside a messaging app is a different audience from a private conversation with a friend. For example, avoid invoking AI around personal group discussions or uploading another person’s photograph. Public Vibes, comments and connected services also need separate attention.

Review Meta AI safety settings together with the eligible account holder. Then practise checking an answer against its original source. For example, verify a quotation on the actual page before using it in schoolwork. Keep passwords, addresses and private photographs out of prompts, even when a training choice is off.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

AI can make persuasive mistakes and produce harmful material. A friendly voice can also encourage someone to reveal private details or rely too heavily on a conversation. Therefore, explain that an assistant cannot replace a trusted adult, teacher or qualified professional.

For families, agree a simple response to an uncomfortable interaction. Stop the chat, keep relevant evidence and tell someone who can help. If another person uses generated images or messages to pressure a child, avoid blaming the child. Instead, protect their privacy and seek appropriate safeguarding support.

Meta also describes distress alerts for parents supervising a teen on Instagram when certain Meta AI conversations suggest a risk of suicide or self harm. This is separate from topic insights in the Meta AI app. Therefore, do not assume every concerning conversation generates an alert or wait for a notification before checking in. Read Meta’s explanation of Instagram parent alerts.

Report Harmful Vibes or Privacy Violations

Public media and technical problems have different reporting routes.

  • For harmful public media, open the Vibe’s More menu and select Report. Choose the reason and scenario, then select Submit and Done.
  • For media violating your privacy, use Meta’s photo or video privacy reporting guidance.
  • For a broken control, open Menu, the profile and Settings. Select Help & support, Submit a report and describe the issue.

Why it matters: Reporting does not guarantee removal or immediate help. Therefore, leave a harmful interaction, preserve relevant evidence and seek support from a trusted person.

CODA offers education and training rather than emergency monitoring. For an immediate safety concern, seek urgent help through the appropriate local service. In addition, return to an ordinary conversation with the young person after reporting. A platform reply alone cannot explain how the experience affected them.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

Families in Ireland, the UK and the USA should check the agreement attached to the actual service and account. An account age rule is separate from a privacy consent rule. Likewise, a parent’s permission does not override a provider’s stricter eligibility requirement. Do not bypass an unavailable regional service.

For privacy concerns, first use the provider’s published request route. Irish families can consult the Data Protection Commission’s parent guidance. UK readers can use ICO public guidance, while US readers can consult FTC children’s privacy guidance. These explain support and rights rather than certifying an app as safe.

Meta AI Safety Settings Checklist

  • First, confirm the current account age rule and regional availability.
  • Next, review training, saved information and any relevant memory choices.
  • Also check sharing, external connections and device permissions.
  • Then protect sign in, recovery access and any payment method.
  • Finally, practise reporting and agree a trusted person to contact.

Meta AI Safety Settings FAQ

Is Meta AI suitable for every child?

No. Start with the current age requirement and the individual child’s needs. For example, a service intended for adults does not become suitable because a parent shares a login. Controls reduce particular risks, but they cannot guarantee suitable answers.

Does deleting history remove everything?

No. History, memory, feedback, published material and copies shared elsewhere can require different actions. Therefore, check what each deletion message actually covers. Ask the provider about information you cannot manage directly.

Can device limits replace account rules?

No. Device limits control access on supported devices, while the service’s eligibility rules still apply. In addition, other devices and browsers can offer a different route. Review these together rather than relying on a single switch.
