Claude Safety Settings

Claude logo for the safety settings guide

Claude safety settings help adults understand the privacy and access controls in Anthropic’s AI assistant. Claude supports writing, analysis, coding and work with files or connected services. Some young people may encounter it through study discussions or social media. However, the consumer service is for adults, so this guide does not recommend child accounts.

For parents, begin with the age rules and account type, then review the controls that apply to your device. This guide separates protective settings from family advice. In addition, check permissions again after a major update or a change of account.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Claude requires users to be at least 18 to create and use a consumer account. Parental permission does not override this rule. An app store classification is a separate description of the app and does not lower its account age. Parents should avoid lending a signed in adult account to a child. Read the provider’s age guidance.

Anthropic may restrict accounts when it detects possible use by a minor. Its official age assurance process uses Yoti and can offer facial age estimation, identity document verification or a verified Digital ID attribute. Anthropic says it receives a pass or fail result rather than the image or document. Verification checks age, not the safety of every response. Review the relevant account guidance.

Restrictions Available

Understand the Limits of Child Protection

Claude does not offer an eligible consumer child account under its current age rule. Privacy settings cannot turn an adult account into a supervised child service.

  • Keep an adult account’s sign in details private.
  • Next, use your device’s family controls to restrict the app and website where required. Check every browser and device the child can use.

Why it matters: However, blocking one app does not block browser access, another account or an AI service supplied by another company.

Claude Safety Settings

Some Claude safety settings depend on the plan, region or account. Use the version specific instructions below, and keep the provider’s help page open if your menu differs. A missing option should never be treated as an active protection.

Claude: Turn Off Model Improvement

Consumer users can choose whether chats and coding sessions help improve models.

  • Select your name, then Settings and Privacy.
  • Next, turn off Help Improve our AI models.

Why it matters: However, this is separate from deleting chats and does not remove all operational or safety processing. Therefore, avoid submitting sensitive material with feedback.

Manage Memory, Chat Search and Sensitive Topics

The current memory panel separates saved context from searching previous chats.

  • Open Settings and Memory.
  • Next, turn off Search and reference chats if unwanted. Review Generate memory from chats and choose Pause memory or Reset memory.
  • Finally, keep Include sensitive topics in memory off where available. Review Topics and delete unwanted entries.

Why it matters: However, reset is permanent. In addition, pausing preserves saved context. Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete its separate memory entries.

Claude: Keep One Chat Out of Memory

A single conversation can avoid memory without becoming incognito.

  • Start a new chat, open + and turn off Memory before sending the first message.

Why it matters: However, the chat remains in history. In addition, for a project, separately review Use account memory on its page if you need separation. A small number of Team or Enterprise organisations retain the legacy Settings and Capabilities route. Consumer accounts use the new Settings and Memory experience.

Start an Incognito Chat

Incognito removes the conversation from normal history and memory.

  • Start a new chat outside a project. Select the ghost icon in the upper right.
  • Next, check the Incognito chat label before typing. Close the chat with x when finished.

Why it matters: However, chats can remain for 30 days for safety, or longer under organisational rules. In addition, incognito can still use profile preferences and cannot be reopened after closing.

Claude: Remove Public Chat Sharing

A public link can be forwarded beyond the person you first send it to.

  • Open the conversation’s Share menu and change it to Private.
  • Next, alternatively, open Settings, Privacy and Shared chats to review sharing.

Why it matters: However, revoking a link cannot remove screenshots, archives or copies on other websites. In addition, inspect every message before creating a public snapshot.

Limit and Disconnect Connectors

Connectors may read information or take actions using the permissions of the connected account.

  • In a chat, open + and Connectors. Turn off services the conversation does not need.
  • Next, to remove a connection, open Customize and Connectors, select the service and choose Disconnect.

Why it matters: However, review account access before approving any connector. In addition, removing access does not recall information already copied into a conversation or another service.

Claude: Keep Manual Approval for Actions

Eligible paid accounts can act on files, websites and connected services.

  • In the message box, open the permission mode selector and select Manually approve or Manual.
  • Next, read each proposed action and choose Allow or Deny according to the task. Grant only the folders and accounts needed.

Why it matters: However, approval prompts reduce accidental actions but cannot replace careful review. In addition, a cloud task can continue when a laptop is closed.

Revoke Browser Site Permissions

The Claude browser extension can have separate website access.

  • Open the Claude extension, then the three dots at the top right of its side panel.
  • Next, select Extension settings and inspect Your approved sites on the Permissions page. Revoke unneeded site permissions.

Why it matters: However, a trusted site can still display misleading content. In addition, do not let an assistant handle a private account merely because it has previous approval.

Claude: Delete Conversations

Deleting chats reduces what remains accessible through normal history.

  • On the web, find the conversation in the sidebar or Chats and tasks where that label remains. Open its ⋮ menu.
  • Next, select Delete and confirm with Delete. On iOS, hold a conversation in the chat list, select Delete and confirm with Delete. On Android, open the chat’s ⋮ menu, select Delete and confirm.

Why it matters: Account and project information can remain after a chat is deleted. Therefore, check memory and public sharing separately.

Export Personal Data

An export can help an adult review or retain their own account history.

  • On the web or Claude Desktop, open Settings and Privacy.
  • Next, select Export data. Use the email download link within 24 hours while signed in to the account.

Why it matters: The export contains private information. Therefore, store it securely and delete unneeded copies. The mobile apps do not provide this export flow.

Claude: Cancel a Paid Plan

Check the purchase platform before stopping renewal.

  • For a direct subscription, open your name menu, Settings and Billing.
  • Next, select Cancel and follow the confirmation. For iOS or Android purchases, tap your initials, then Billing and Manage subscription. Complete cancellation through the original store account.

Why it matters: Deleting the app does not cancel billing. Therefore, keep the cancellation confirmation and check the next renewal date.

Delete the Consumer Account

Account deletion is permanent. Export any records you need first.

  • Cancel any Pro or Max subscription and wait until the current paid period ends.
  • Next, select your name, then Settings, Account and Delete Account. Follow the confirmation prompts.

Why it matters: Third party services using Claude have separate deletion routes. In addition, closing the Anthropic account does not necessarily close those services.

Claude Safety Settings for Scheduled Tasks

Cloud schedules can continue while your computer is closed.

  • Open Scheduled in the sidebar and select the task you want to review.
  • Review its instructions and frequency. Use Pause to stop future runs temporarily or Delete to remove an unwanted schedule.

Why it matters: Check local and cloud tasks. In addition, keep action approval set to Manual when you want to review consequential steps.

How to Use Claude Safely

For adults using Cowork, computer control or the browser extension, review access before each task. Grant a separate working folder rather than a whole family archive. Keep approval prompts enabled and stop the task if it begins an unintended action. In addition, protect the email or Google account used to sign in, and sign out shared computers.

Review Claude safety settings together, then ask for explanations rather than accepting an answer you cannot follow. For example, compare a generated summary with the original material and check unfamiliar links before opening them. Keep passwords, addresses and private photographs out of prompts, even when a privacy switch is off.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

AI can produce persuasive errors, imitate people and generate harmful material. A friendly reply can also encourage someone to reveal more than they intended. Therefore, discuss what your family considers private and how to leave an uncomfortable interaction without shame.

Never use an assistant’s reassurance as proof that a person, investment or link is genuine. If another user pressures a young person to send images, money or passwords, stop the interaction and seek help. In addition, agree a human contact for problems that feel difficult to explain.

Report Unsafe or Inappropriate Output

You can flag troubling replies or shared content to Anthropic.

  • Use the response’s Thumbs down feedback control. Explain the problem without adding unrelated private information.
  • For policy or illegal content concerns, use the reporting route in Anthropic’s reporting guidance.

Why it matters: Reporting is separate from removing a public link. Take both steps if a private conversation has been shared.

Listen calmly if your child reports a worrying experience. For urgent safeguarding concerns, seek appropriate help rather than waiting for a platform reply. In immediate danger, contact emergency services on 112 or 999 in Ireland. CODA’s contact form is for education enquiries.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

In Ireland, the UK and the USA, follow the service’s current terms and the controls available to the actual account. Privacy law and a provider’s minimum account age are separate matters. A privacy consent rule does not give a child permission to ignore a stricter service age limit.

For privacy concerns, start with the provider’s support or privacy request route. Families in Ireland can consult the Data Protection Commission’s parent guidance. UK families can use ICO guidance, while US families can consult FTC children’s privacy guidance. These resources explain rights and reporting, rather than certifying any app as safe.

Claude Safety Settings Checklist

  • Confirm the service age rules and use the correct account type.
  • Review saved activity, memory, sharing and connected services.
  • Protect sign in, recovery access and the devices used.
  • Check purchases and renewal dates before accepting a trial.
  • Practise how to stop a chat, report a problem and ask a trusted person for help.

Claude Safety Settings FAQ

Do these settings make Claude safe for every child?

No. Begin with the provider’s age rule and suitability for the individual child. Controls reduce particular risks, while content and the way someone uses an assistant can still cause problems.

Does turning off training delete conversations?

No. Training choices, history deletion and memory are separate controls. Review each one and check information already shared with other services or people.

Should a parent share an adult login?

Avoid sharing an adult account. It can expose private history, payment details and connected services, and does not create an eligible consumer account for someone under 18.
