Nintendo Switch 2 is Nintendo’s games console for handheld play or a television. Children use it for adventures, creative games and playing with friends locally or online. These Nintendo Switch 2 safety settings help parents manage games, time, spending and communication. Check the console, Nintendo Account and GameChat separately because each uses different controls.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
A console does not make every game suitable for a child. Check each title’s age rating, communication features and purchases. For Ireland, use PEGI’s content ratings. Also, an allowed game can contain player created content or contact that needs supervision.
Most console restrictions apply to everyone using the machine. Therefore, configure these for the youngest player. GameChat permissions are different and apply to the supervised user. Children under 16 need the parental app setup before using GameChat. The free parental app is separate from the Nintendo Switch Online membership currently required for GameChat.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for Accounts
Create the Child Account
Keep the parent’s account separate. Use accurate details and adult controlled recovery information.
- Sign in at Nintendo Account with the family administrator’s account. Open Family group.
- Choose Add a member or Create family group. An administrator aged 18 or older must add a child under 16.
- Select Create a child account. Enter the requested nickname, sign in ID and password.
- Read the account agreement and privacy notice. Confirm the relevant boxes, select Continue, then OK.
- For an existing older account, choose Invite someone to your family group, Confirm, enter its email and select Submit. The account owner opens the invitation, signs in and selects Join family group.
Why it matters: Separate identities help apply the correct account restrictions. However, do not replace an existing identity without checking its purchases and saved progress.
Check Parent and Supervised Roles
Family membership alone does not configure every protective permission.
- As the administrator, open Family Group on the Nintendo Account website. Select the adult account.
- Choose Set as a parent/guardian. This requires an eligible adult account aged 18 or older.
- Next, select the child’s account. Accounts created for children under 16 are supervised automatically.
- For an eligible existing account that is not supervised, choose Make this account supervised, then OK. Its owner opens the verification email, signs in and selects Accept.
Why it matters: The right roles enable parental account controls. Also, keep the administrator’s password and recovery access private.
Link the Correct Console User
A console user and a Nintendo Account are separate until linked.
- On the HOME Menu, open System Settings. Select User, then the child’s user.
- Choose Sign in to a Nintendo Account or Link to a Nintendo Account.
- Sign in with the child’s Nintendo Account. Check the identity carefully before selecting Link.
- Finally, select OK. Repeat the identity check for every user your child can access.
Why it matters: This connects online features to the intended account. Nintendo says a linked account cannot simply be replaced on that same user. Ask support before deleting anything.
Nintendo Switch 2 Parental Controls App Setup
The app provides time limits and GameChat controls that console only setup cannot provide.
- Install Nintendo Switch Parental Controls from Nintendo’s official app link. Open it and select Start, then Next.
- Choose Send Data or Don’t Send Data for app usage data. Select Sign In/Create Account and sign in with the adult account.
- Confirm Select this person, then Next. Keep the registration code visible.
- On the console, open System Settings, Parental Controls, Parental Controls Settings, then If You’ve Already Downloaded the App.
- If Change Settings appears, select it, enter the PIN and choose Use the Free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App. Continue to the downloaded app option and Next.
- Enter the six digit registration code and select OK, then Link. Confirm OK on both devices.
Why it matters: The adult phone can now manage the linked console. However, unlinking removes console restrictions. Account shopping restrictions remain separate.
Console Only Nintendo Switch 2 Parental Controls
Without a parent phone, set the basic console restrictions directly. This alternative does not provide the app’s time or GameChat controls.
- Open System Settings on the HOME Menu. Select Parental Controls, then Set Up Parental Controls. UK wording may show Parental Controls Settings.
- Press the X Button, then choose Next to continue without the app.
- Open Restriction Level. Choose a preset or Custom Settings to select the software rating and communication restrictions.
- Review each available setting for the youngest player. Select Next, create a private four to eight digit PIN and select OK.
- Enter the same PIN again and select OK. Finally, test a restricted game without supplying the PIN.
Why it matters: Basic restrictions are still possible without a smartphone. However, changing to the app requires the pairing steps above. Do not unlink an existing app merely to try this alternative.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for Games
Set Ratings and Review Exceptions
Choose the permitted age range rather than relying on a preset name.
- In the app, open Parental Controls, then Restricted Features. Choose Custom or Custom Settings, depending on region.
- Set Content Rating System to the appropriate scheme, such as PEGI. US wording uses Software Rating Organization.
- Open Restricted Software and choose the age restriction. Save the change.
- Review Safelist or Allow List separately. Remove an exception you no longer intend to permit, then save.
Why it matters: A classification ceiling manages supported software. Exceptions can bypass the rating restriction without a PIN, but remain subject to the play time limit. Test a restricted game afterwards.
Restrict Game Communication
Game communication needs a separate choice from ratings.
- Open the app’s Parental Controls, Restricted Features and Custom.
- Select Free Communication With Others and choose Restricted. US menus use Communicating with Others.
- Review any software specific exceptions. Finally, select Save and let the console connect online.
Why it matters: This limits supported communication inside games. However, this specific restriction does not cover GameChat. Configure the separate permissions below.
VR and Features That Differ From Switch
If relevant software presents VR Mode (3D Visuals), review it under Restricted Features and Custom. Nintendo says to restrict this option when a child aged six or younger uses the console. Save the choice. Also, Nintendo says Switch 2 cannot post directly to social networks, so the original Switch posting restriction is not a Switch 2 setting.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for Time
Daily Limits in Switch 2 Safety Settings
A reminder and an enforced stop have different effects.
- In the app, open Parental Controls, then Play Time Limit.
- Set the daily allowance. Use the individual days option for different school day and weekend rules.
- Enable Suspend Software or Suspend Software at Set Time if you want play to stop rather than only show a notification.
- Save the settings and test the result. Explain the stop in advance so your child can save progress.
Why it matters: A warning alone allows play to continue. The allowance applies across the console rather than separately to each child. Also, suspension can interrupt unsaved progress.
Bedtime and Morning Access
In Parental Controls and Play Time Limit, set Bedtime. Open its three dots option to choose when access resumes the next morning, then save. Where both a duration and bedtime apply, the earlier limit takes effect. However, a parent can grant an exception, so check the schedule again after special occasions.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for GameChat
Register the Parent’s Phone Number
GameChat requires a registered phone number. For a child under 16, use the parent’s account.
- Sign in to the adult Nintendo Account. Open Sign-In and Security Settings, then Phone Number or its Edit option.
- Complete any requested account identity check. Choose the phone number’s country and enter a number that can receive text messages.
- Select Submit. Enter the six digit text message code in Verification code and choose Verify.
- Finally, confirm OK when registration succeeds.
Why it matters: This is a prerequisite for the service and account recovery. It does not establish that a friend is trustworthy or make every conversation appropriate.
Set Up GameChat With Your Child
Complete account linking and app pairing first. Check the supervised user before granting permission.
- In the app, select GameChat, Next and Set Parental Controls. Choose the supervised user.
- Verify the parent’s registered number using the text message code. Read the terms before selecting I Agree.
- On the console, press the C Button and choose the child’s user. Let the connection test finish, then choose Start and Next.
- Read the information and select Next. Open Consent to GameChat Data Processing, review the terms, then select I consent to the data processing and Next if you consent.
- Select Select Friends and Request Approval. Choose known friends, then Next, Send Request and OK.
- In the app, open Chat approval request received. Select each friend, discuss who they are and choose Next. Approve or refuse the request.
- If approving, add a note, then select Next and OK. On the console, choose Next and review each I Understand reminder together.
Why it matters: The parent reviews contacts before supervised chat begins. The other side must also approve. Do not approve a stranger simply because they use a familiar name.
GameChat Permissions in Switch 2 Family Settings
Continue checking permissions after the initial setup.
- Open GameChat in the app and select the child. Review Friends Approved for GameChat.
- To remove approval, select the friend and choose Revoke GameChat Permission, then Revoke Permission. US wording uses Withdraw.
- Open the three dots beside the child’s nickname and select Use of Video Chat. Choose permission for each session or disable video chat.
- During an approved session, open Play Activity, then Video Chat. Choose Face Only, No Background or No Filter and select Save. Revoke session permission when needed.
Why it matters: Permission can be withdrawn when circumstances change. Disabling video also hides other camera feeds, but does not disable gameplay screen sharing. Review games and shared screens too.
Review Activity Without Promising Transcripts
Discuss the app’s Play Activity and monthly summaries together. GameChat activity can show contacts, session duration and video use. However, this is different from reading every conversation. Also, explain that other people can record a screen or share information elsewhere. Keep cameras away from identifying backgrounds.
Recorded Data in Switch 2 Family Settings
The separate user verification setting protects selected features on each console. It is off by default and is different from the parental PIN.
- From the HOME Menu, select the appropriate user icon. Open User-Verification Settings.
- Complete the requested account verification using the account password, passkey or email code.
- Open Verification Method. Choose Sign In to a Nintendo Account or PIN.
- If choosing PIN, create a private four to eight digit code using the prompts.
- Require verification for viewing recorded GameChat data and review the other listed features. Repeat the check for each relevant user and console.
Why it matters: This reduces casual access through another person’s user profile. However, it does not stop GameChat recording or prevent someone else recording their screen. Keep the account recovery details private.
Microphone Privacy in Switch 2 Safety Settings
Voice can reveal names and conversations in the room. Check the microphone as well as the camera.
- During GameChat, press the C Button to open the menu.
- Select the microphone icon to mute yourself when you do not intend to transmit speech.
- Check the icon’s current state before speaking privately nearby. Muting and unmuting are separate from leaving the chat.
- Finally, stop any camera or screen sharing that you do not intend to continue. Hiding other players’ video on your own screen does not stop your outgoing feed.
Why it matters: A muted microphone reduces accidental sharing of room conversations. However, it is not a replacement for ending an unwanted chat or reporting harmful contact.
Understand GameChat Recordings
Nintendo says GameChat temporarily stores voice and video on the consoles of participants. A report can include the last three minutes. Therefore, discuss recording before your child joins a chat. This is different from the parent app’s activity summaries or a permanent transcript. Other people may also make their own recordings.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for Shopping
Shopping Rules in Switch 2 Family Settings
Nintendo Account shopping controls are separate from console rating controls.
- Sign in to the parent’s Nintendo Account and open Family group. Select the supervised child.
- Enable Spending Restrictions to disable purchases and automatic renewal options covered by that control.
- Enable Age-Based Content Restrictions or the corresponding age restriction for viewing shop content.
- Finally, select Save changes. Check the child’s account and prevent access to adult shopping profiles.
Why it matters: A game classification does not itself manage shopping. Also, review existing subscriptions and third party game accounts separately. Do not assume blocking future renewal options cancels every existing charge.
Disable Unwanted Friend Suggestions
Reduce suggestions from connected services when they are not needed.
- On the account website, open Family group and select the supervised account.
- Open Privacy and Other Settings. Under Friend Suggestions, choose Change.
- Turn suggestions off, or expand Set for services individually and review each service.
Why it matters: This reduces unnecessary discovery routes. It does not remove current friends or replace GameChat approval.
Review Services Receiving Account Information
Check connected services instead of assuming console controls remove their access.
- On the account website, select Family Group, then the supervised account.
- Open Privacy and Other Settings. Under Services with Access to Account Information, select Check.
- Expand an unwanted service. Select Withdraw consent, then Withdraw consent again.
Why it matters: This removes that service’s authorised access to account information. However, review the service’s own privacy and deletion arrangements for data it already holds.
Renewals and Switch 2 Family Settings
Only the account that bought the membership can change its renewal. Deleting an app does not cancel the subscription.
- Visit Nintendo Account portal and sign in to the account that purchased the membership.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online. Choose the relevant membership under Valid Memberships.
- Select Terminate automatic renewal, then Terminate automatic renewal again to confirm.
- Finally, check the membership status and expiry date. Nintendo requires renewal to be stopped at least 48 hours before the current period ends.
Why it matters: This prevents the next renewal when completed in time. It does not automatically refund a previous payment. A family member who did not buy the membership cannot change its renewal.
Mistaken Purchases and Refund Requests
Nintendo’s European Direct Download guidance says it does not provide refunds simply because a purchase was a mistake or the buyer dislikes the game. Therefore, check the description, compatibility and account before paying. For a payment problem, unexpected charge or faulty purchase, contact Nintendo Support with the order details. Do not promise a refund or give a child adult payment access while seeking help.
eShop Protection in Switch 2 Safety Settings
User verification is separate from the parental PIN. Nintendo added eShop identity PIN support to original Switch models in 2026.
- First, update the console. On the HOME Menu, select the adult’s user icon and open User-Verification Settings. Regional wording may use Identity Authentication.
- Complete the requested password, passkey or email verification. Next, open Verification Method.
- Choose Sign In to a Nintendo Account or PIN. If choosing PIN, follow the prompts to create a private four to eight digit code.
- Require verification for Accessing Nintendo eShop and Using Saved Payment Methods where listed. UK wording may show When using Nintendo eShop and When paying with saved payment methods.
- Finally, test the prompts on that adult user. Repeat the review for every adult user and console the child can reach.
Why it matters: Without verification, someone can select another user to reach the listed features. These choices are off by default and apply separately on each console. They do not replace child spending restrictions. Older software or support pages may describe eShop password entry instead.
Data Choices in Switch 2 Family Settings
Review optional data purposes separately for the parent and supervised child. Regional wording can differ.
- First, sign in to Nintendo Account as the parent. Open Privacy and Other Settings and the Data Usage – Opt-Out Preferences section.
- Choose whether to allow usage information for improving products and services, and for personalised offers and recommendations.
- For the child, open Family group and select their account. Under Manage Child Accounts, open Data Usage – Opt-Out Preferences.
- Finally, review both purposes for the child and confirm any requested save. Read the privacy notice for that account’s region.
Why it matters: These preferences address optional uses described by Nintendo. They do not stop necessary service records or remove information held by a separate game publisher. This is different from deleting an account or withdrawing a connected service’s access.
Account Security in Switch 2 Safety Settings
Add a Passkey to the Parent Account
Use a compatible device that only the adult can unlock. A passkey does not replace console restrictions.
- On that device, sign in to Nintendo Account. Open Sign-in and security settings, then Passkeys and Edit.
- If asked, select Submit to receive an email code. Enter it in Verification code and select Submit.
- Choose Register a new passkey. Enter the account password when requested and select OK.
- Read the information and select Register. Complete the device’s authentication prompts and check the registration confirmation.
- Later, review Registered Passkeys in the same settings. Remove access for a lost or unwanted device using Remove and confirm Remove.
Why it matters: A private adult device helps protect family and purchase controls. However, someone who can unlock a shared device may use its passkey. Keep the recovery email and password secure too.
Use Two Step Verification
Add this protection to the eligible parent account. Nintendo does not offer it for child accounts.
- Sign in to Nintendo Account. Open Sign-In and Security Settings. Find Two-Step Verification and select Edit.
- Complete any requested account verification. Install a trusted authentication app on the adult’s device.
- Use the authentication app to scan the QR code displayed by Nintendo.
- Enter the app’s six digit code in Verification code and select Submit.
- Select Copy for the backup codes and store them privately. Finally, select Backup codes saved, then OK.
Why it matters: An extra verification code helps protect password based sign in. Backup codes provide recovery when the authentication device is unavailable. Do not store them where the child or another player can read them.
Protect Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings
PIN Protection for Switch 2 Safety Settings
A PIN can override restrictions. Keep it separate from account passwords.
- In the app, select Parental Controls, then Parental Controls PIN.
- Choose Change, enter a private PIN of four to eight digits and select Confirm.
- Finally, select Save. The console must connect online to receive the change.
Why it matters: A private PIN reduces casual bypasses. Once the console is linked, change its PIN through the app. Do not leave the adult phone unlocked.
Share Controls With Another Guardian
Two eligible guardians in the same family group can share supervision.
- Give each adult their own Parent/Guardian account and official app. Pair the console with the first adult’s app.
- In that app, select Parental Controls, the Settings icon, then Shared Parental Controls.
- Choose Begin Setup, review the consoles and select Next. Choose the other guardian and confirm OK twice.
- Have the other adult sign in on their phone, then choose Yes and OK on the sharing prompt.
Why it matters: Both adults can respond to requests and review rules. However, both can change controls across the shared consoles. Agree changes and keep each account secure.
PIN Alerts in Switch 2 Safety Settings
A notification can tell you that someone entered the parental PIN successfully. It reports use rather than preventing it.
- First, update the console and Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Open the app and select Parental Controls.
- Select the gear icon to open Settings, then Notification Settings.
- Next to Receive Notifications, choose Change. Enable PIN Entry and review other notifications you want.
- Finally, allow notifications for the parental app in the phone’s own settings. Keep adult device access private.
Why it matters: An unexpected alert can prompt a review of who knows the PIN. Connectivity and phone notification settings affect delivery. Receiving an alert does not automatically reverse the override, so change an exposed PIN and recheck restrictions.
Reporting, Blocking and Updates
Report Harmful GameChat Contact
Help the child stop contact first. Reporting is different from parent activity summaries.
- While in GameChat, press the C Button, select the user and choose Report.
- Select Leave Chat and Report, read the information and choose OK. Select the reason category.
- Review the recent recording if appropriate. Select Next, choose the relevant 30 second section and confirm OK.
- If no relevant recording exists, use Report Without Audio/Video. Enter the reason, select Next, review it and choose Submit Report.
- Finally, select OK. Choose Block if you also need to stop further contact.
Why it matters: A report can send recent recorded communication to Nintendo for review. After leaving, the route is C Button, the same user, Settings and Report. Recordings cover the latest three minutes of the most recent three chats and are available for reports within 24 hours. Later chats can replace them. Chat history can support reports for up to 28 days, even when recordings are unavailable. Do not treat it as a permanent evidence archive.
Block a Recent Player
Use the child’s own profile to select the correct player.
- On the HOME Menu, select the child’s user icon, My Page.
- Choose Add Friend, then Search for Users You’ve Played With.
- Find the player, check the game and date if necessary, then select Block twice.
Why it matters: Blocking prevents further friend requests and affects matching and GameChat access. Also, report the harmful behaviour through its game or GameChat tools. Another account or service can still leave gaps.
Install Official System Updates
Keep the console connected to power and use official updates.
- Connect to the internet. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System, then System Update.
- Let the console check for and install an available update. Finally, recheck the child’s restrictions.
Why it matters: Updates can address system changes and faults. However, updates do not replace account security or make every online interaction suitable.
Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings for Captures
Review Automatic Capture Uploads
Captured games can include usernames, messages or personal details. The Nintendo Switch App is different from the parent controls app.
- Open Album on the console’s HOME Menu. Select Upload Settings on the left.
- Find Automatic Uploads and disable it if you do not want captures uploaded automatically.
- Before a manual upload, review the image or video. Select it, press the A Button and choose Upload to Smart Device.
- Select the correct user and choose Upload only if you intend to send it. A video upload can require the parental PIN.
Why it matters: A review can prevent accidental sharing of identifying details. However, disabling automatic uploads does not delete earlier uploads. Queued uploads can start when the console reconnects.
Delete Uploaded Captures Separately
Nintendo’s server copies are separate from files on the console and removable storage.
- Open Album, then Upload Settings. Select the relevant User.
- Choose Delete Data, then Delete Uploaded Data.
- Check that you intend to remove all uploaded screenshots and videos for this user. Select Delete to confirm.
Why it matters: Clearing server copies addresses a different location from the console album. It does not delete files saved to a phone, sent elsewhere or stored locally. Review those copies separately.
Review Local Screenshots and Videos
For an individual local capture, open Album, select the screenshot or video, press the A Button and choose Delete. Check its contents and storage location first. However, deleting the local file does not remove an uploaded or forwarded copy. Ask the child about the context before removing possible evidence of harmful contact.
Switch 2 Safety Settings Before Deleting Data
Remove a Console User Carefully
Deleting a console user removes associated local saves. It does not delete the separate Nintendo Account.
- Open System Settings on the HOME Menu. Select User, then the intended user.
- Scroll down and select Delete User. Enter the parental PIN if requested.
- Review the warning. Only if you intend to remove that user and their saves, tick Delete and select Next.
- Select Delete This User, then OK.
Why it matters: User removal is different from closing an online account. Nintendo warns that the deleted local saves cannot be restored through this action. Check backups and purchases before starting.
Restore the Console Before Passing It On
Check saved games and purchases first. Removable storage and online accounts need separate attention.
- Connect the console to the internet. Open System Settings, System and Formatting Options.
- Enter the parental PIN if prompted. Select Restore Factory Settings.
- Read the data loss warnings, then select Next and Next to let the console unlink the accounts online.
- Only when you intend to erase the system memory, select Restore Factory Settings to complete the reset.
Why it matters: A full reset removes local software, saves, users and captures. It does not close Nintendo Accounts or securely erase every removable storage copy. Keep the console online for unlinking and remove the storage card before handing it over.
Delete a Child’s Nintendo Account Only When Intended
Account deletion affects purchases and linked services. Deleting the parent account can also delete managed child accounts.
- Sign in with the supervising parent’s Nintendo Account. Open Family Group and select the correct child.
- Choose Delete Child Account. Read the consequences and select Confirm and Proceed only if account closure is intended.
- Complete the requested password, passkey, email or authentication code checks.
- Finally, select Delete only when you intend to close that account.
Why it matters: Closing an account is more extensive than removing a console user. Nintendo allows a 30 day reactivation period, but does not guarantee restoration of every item. After that period deletion is permanent.
Using Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings Together
Start by playing a new game together. For example, check its chat, purchases and player created content before allowing independent use. Agree who can join, when play stops and how your child can ask for help. Also, check every profile and separate communication app they can access.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
An approved friend or familiar avatar does not establish someone’s identity. Therefore, discourage sharing a school, address, passwords or private images. Discuss scams involving free currency, account recovery and unofficial downloads. If someone pressures your child to keep a secret or move to private messaging, help them stop contact and tell a trusted adult.
If bullying or sexual pressure occurs, reassure your child and stop further contact. Preserve usernames and relevant messages where safe. However, do not download or forward sexual images of children. Use the reporting tools where the contact happened and see CODA support resources for further help.
Support for Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings
The parental app and local restrictions are free. GameChat currently requires Nintendo Switch Online and an internet connection. Menu labels vary by region and app version, including Safelist versus Allow List. If a setting differs, consult the official Nintendo instructions. Also, seek advice before transferring, deleting or resetting users because purchases and saved data can be affected.
Checklist for Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings
- First, use the child’s own account and keep adult credentials private.
- Next, test the rating restriction with the actual console and profile.
- Review communication, purchases and time controls separately.
- Also, check exceptions and repeat the checks after changing accounts or settings.
- Finally, agree how to stop unwanted contact and ask an adult for help.
Questions About Nintendo Switch 2 Safety Settings
Do these controls guarantee safe play?
No. Settings only cover their stated functions. Another account, an allowed game or a separate device can leave gaps. Consequently, keep checking the setup and talking with your child.
Does a shop restriction block every payment?
No. A console shop, an external game account and a subscription can have different payment arrangements. Therefore, review saved payment methods and renewal terms separately. Keep adult shopping profiles inaccessible to children.
