Nintendo 3DS Safety Settings

Nintendo 3DS safety settings guide image

Nintendo 3DS is a handheld games family with two screens, touchscreen controls and local wireless play. Children use it for adventures, puzzles and games with nearby friends. These 3DS safety settings cover game ratings, the browser and sharing, while explaining model differences and closed online services. The family includes 2DS and New models.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

A 3DS console does not make every game suitable for children. Check each game’s age classification and content descriptors before play. PEGI’s labels describe content suitability rather than game difficulty. Also, local controls do not establish the identity or intentions of another player.

Offline play does not require a new online account or an identity document. The console PIN protects settings rather than verifying age. In addition, do not use an adult’s identity to bypass a separate service’s age rules. Parents should configure restrictions themselves and keep recovery details private.

These handhelds have one parental control configuration per system where controls are available. They do not provide separate modern child profiles for every player. Therefore, choose restrictions suitable for the youngest child who uses the device. A family group on a modern Nintendo Account does not configure these older systems.

In addition, Nintendo recommends restricting 3D images for children aged six and under. This warning concerns the 3D display, rather than a minimum age for every game. Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL display in 2D and do not need a 3D display restriction. Check each game’s classification separately.

3DS Safety Settings After Online Closures

New Nintendo eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023. Most Nintendo online play and related communication ended on 8 April 2024. However, offline modes and local StreetPass remain available. SpotPass depended on online communication and is no longer available. Do not treat a server closure as a browser block or a complete ban on sharing.

Nintendo currently describes eligible purchase redownloads and updates as available for the foreseeable future. Its separate Pokémon Bank notice announces an end on 25 February 2027 at 7 pm Pacific Standard Time. New Bank downloads are unavailable. Therefore, families with an existing installation should check the official transfer advice before that deadline.

3DS Safety Settings for Games

Create the 3DS Parental Controls PIN

A parent should protect the system configuration and recovery details. One PIN configuration covers everyone using this handheld.

  • From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and Open. Choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, read the setup information and follow the prompts to create a four digit PIN. Enter it twice and confirm with OK.
  • Choose a secret question and enter an answer following the length requirement on your system.
  • Register an email address that only a parent or guardian can access for recovery.
  • Finally, configure each relevant restriction and select Done to finish. Also, keep both the PIN and recovery access private.

Why it matters: A PIN prevents casual changes and temporary overrides. However, it does not establish a player’s age or create a modern Nintendo Account child profile.

Change Existing 3DS Safety Settings

Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and select Open. Choose Parental Controls, Change, enter the PIN and select OK. Next, open Set Restrictions. Choose the relevant category and select Done when finished. Use this route for every setting below.

Game Ratings in 3DS Safety Settings

Choose the highest suitable software classification. In addition, check both the rating and content descriptors.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Software Rating. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: The restriction covers supported 3DS and DSi software. However, it does not apply to ordinary DS games or software received through DS Download Play. Inspect those separately.

Browser Access in 3DS Safety Settings

Similarly, browser access needs a separate restriction from game ratings.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Internet Browser. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: Blocking the browser reduces unsupervised web access. However, it does not filter other devices or every game’s own content.

Restrict the Display of 3D Images

On models capable of 3D, this makes images display in 2D.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Display of 3D Images. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: Nintendo recommends this restriction for children aged six and under. The option is absent on 2DS models because their screens do not display 3D.

Sharing and 3DS Parental Controls

Limit Sharing of Images and Recordings

Control supported wireless sharing of photos, sounds, videos and long messages.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Sharing Images/Audio/Video/Long Text Data. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: Consequently, this can reduce exchanges containing personal information. However, it is not a camera or microphone off switch and does not cover ordinary DS software.

StreetPass in 3DS Safety Settings

StreetPass exchanges supported game data with nearby 3DS family systems. It does not need the closed online play service.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose StreetPass. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: Restricting StreetPass limits that particular local exchange. However, it does not cover communication inside DS or DSi software or every local multiplayer function.

Friends and 3DS Parental Controls

Control whether someone can register additional friends.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Friend Registration. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: As a result, a registration restriction adds a barrier to new friend connections. However, it does not confirm a person’s identity or automatically remove existing friends.

Restrict DS Download Play

This option controls the DS mode of Download Play.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose DS Download Play. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: It addresses software received from another nearby system. For 3DS Download Play, supported software ratings provide a separate restriction. Do not confuse the two modes.

Review Legacy Online Interaction

Check the old restriction for supported online game communication.

  • Open System Settings from the HOME Menu and choose Parental Controls.
  • Next, select Change, enter the PIN, select OK and open Set Restrictions.
  • Choose Online Interaction. Set the restriction suitable for your child and follow the confirmation prompt.
  • Finally, select Done to save. Check the feature again without supplying the PIN.

Why it matters: In addition, the category is separate from browser and StreetPass controls. Most Nintendo online play has ended. This setting does not restore it or guarantee protection on an unofficial network.

Shopping, Miiverse and Video Options

New eShop purchases have ended, so Nintendo 3DS Shopping Services is not a current spending allowance. Miiverse has also closed. A remaining menu icon does not mean that community is available. Where Viewing Distributed Videos appears, review it through Set Restrictions and Done. Do not promise a discontinued video app still works.

Practical 3DS Safety Settings

Play Time, Cameras and System Protection

In addition, Nintendo’s Activity Log records play rather than enforcing bedtime. Therefore, agree a schedule and use adult supervised reminders. The Switch parental controls phone app does not manage 3DS. Also, the PIN gate on Outer Cameras protects a system settings function, not ordinary photo taking. Review stored photographs and each game’s camera or microphone use separately.

Parental controls also gate selected system functions such as network settings, transfer and formatting. Keep recovery details private and check the configuration after an update. A Nintendo Network ID is different from a modern Nintendo Account. Do not assume that modern family group permissions or authentication features automatically secure it.

Protect an Existing Nintendo Network ID

Check the older identity’s password separately from the parental PIN and modern Nintendo Accounts.

  • From the HOME Menu, open System Settings and Nintendo Network ID Settings.
  • Next, select Password Settings. Use Change Password to set a unique password and follow the confirmation prompts.
  • Review Remember Password and avoid retaining access where someone else could use it without permission.
  • If needed, choose I Forgot to request recovery through the associated email address. Contact Nintendo if you cannot access that email.

Why it matters: As a result, private credentials and recovery access help protect the identity. However, this is not a separate child profile or a substitute for local restrictions.

Install Official 3DS Updates

For example, use Nintendo’s system update route rather than an unknown download.

  • From the HOME Menu, open System Settings and Other Settings.
  • Next, reach page four on 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS or New 2DS XL. Use page five on New 3DS or New 3DS XL.
  • Select System Update and OK. Enter the parental PIN if requested.
  • Read the notice and choose I Accept if you agree. Finally, select OK to begin and follow the power instructions.

Why it matters: Official software can address system changes and faults. However, an update does not restore closed services or establish ongoing support for every old app.

Before Formatting or Transferring a 3DS

Formatting and permanent Nintendo Network ID deletion have different effects. Ask Nintendo about purchases and transfers before either action. In addition, photographs and recordings on an SD card need separate removal. Do not assume a reset erases removable storage, or that formatting permits the same identity on a different console. Use the official model specific instructions.

Using 3DS Safety Settings Together

Agree on games, play times and who can join in. For example, try a new game together before allowing independent play. Keep the console in a shared space where possible. Also, make room for breaks and check cables, controllers and accessories for damage.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

Older hardware still needs supervision. In particular, avoid unknown downloads, unofficial network services and offers to unlock games or accounts. A familiar game or username does not establish who someone is. Never share passwords, home addresses, school details or private photographs.

If someone bullies or pressures your child, help them stop contact and tell a trusted adult. Reassure them that asking for help will not get them into trouble. Where contact happens through another game or app, use that service’s blocking and reporting tools. For further help, see CODA support resources.

Support for 3DS Safety Settings

These 3DS safety settings are free console controls. They do not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. However, menu wording and game classifications vary by country and system version. Use PEGI classifications for relevant Irish and European games, while imported systems may show another rating scheme.

Follow Nintendo Support for problems with PIN recovery or an unexpected menu. An old support page may describe a service that has since closed. Therefore, read the current closure notices alongside the original instructions. Never assume a modern Nintendo Account family group configures these older consoles.

Checklist for 3DS Safety Settings

  • First, keep the parental PIN and its recovery answer private.
  • Next, test game restrictions using the console and user your child actually uses.
  • Check browser access and any available local or online communication separately.
  • In addition, inspect saved photographs, messages, games and removable storage on a second hand console.
  • Agree a play schedule and supervise breaks rather than relying on a usage log.
  • Finally, repeat the checks after changing users, software or settings.

Questions About 3DS Safety Settings

Do these controls guarantee safe play?

No. A restriction only covers its stated function. Another device, an unrestricted user or a separate chat app can leave gaps. Consequently, keep checking the settings and talking with your child.

Does a closed shop make the whole console offline?

No. Shop purchases, game servers, browser access and local multiplayer are separate functions. Therefore, check each one rather than treating a shop closure as a complete safety barrier.
