YouTube Kids gives children a separate way to watch videos selected from YouTube. It includes cartoons, songs, craft activities, gaming and educational entertainment. Familiar characters and recommendations can make it appealing to younger children. This guide explains YouTube Kids safety settings for parents choosing content and supervising viewing.
For parents, YouTube Kids safety settings begin with the right account or profile, suitable content choices and a private parental passcode. Filters can miss unsuitable videos. Therefore, review viewing with the child and use reporting when something concerning appears.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
A YouTube Kids profile under the adult’s Google Account is different from a supervised Google Account managed through Family Link. The first does not give the child an independent Google login. Check which arrangement your family uses before following instructions.
Google’s current content choices are Preschool for ages four and under, Younger for ages five to eight and Older for ages nine to twelve. These are content bands, rather than guarantees about each video or minimum ages for independent Google accounts.
Google lists 16 as the age to manage your own Google Account in Ireland. Younger children can use an appropriately supervised account. The default independent account age is 13 in countries not listed as exceptions, including the UK and US. This account rule is different from a content band.
Adult setup may require Google to confirm the parent is over 18. Follow only the official account prompt and review its privacy information before supplying verification information. A multiplication puzzle or a child’s secret profile code does not reliably establish adulthood.
YouTube Kids can still show unsuitable, frightening or misleading material. Choose Approve content yourself when you want to select the accessible content, and watch together where practical.
YouTube Kids Parental Controls and Restrictions
Create a YouTube Kids child profile
Signed in parents can create up to eight profiles. Use accurate age information for content selection, and a nickname if you prefer.
- Open YouTube Kids and select the adult Google Account, then Sign in.
- Complete any official adult birthday verification prompt.
- Read the parental consent information. If you agree, select Done and enter the adult password.
- Enter the child’s name or nickname and correct age, with birth month if you choose.
- Review the explanation of video selection and select a suitable content choice.
- Choose the child’s profile for viewing.
Why it matters: As a result, each child needs an appropriate setup. However, a signed out session offers fewer protections, including no signed in content blocking.
Set a YouTube Kids parental passcode
Replace the easily solved multiplication challenge with a code the child does not know.
- Open Settings and complete the multiplication challenge.
- Select Create passcode.
- Enter a private four digit code and confirm it when prompted.
- To replace it later, open Settings, enter the code and choose Change passcode.
Why it matters: For this reason, keep the code separate from the child’s secret profile code. Reinstalling the app can reset the parental passcode, so also control device access.
Choose approved content in YouTube Kids
This choice lets the parent handpick videos, channels and collections.
- Open Settings in the YouTube Kids app.
- Solve the multiplication challenge or enter your parental passcode.
- Select the child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Select EDIT SETTINGS and Approve content yourself.
- Read the setup information and tap Select.
- Use the add symbol beside each chosen video, channel or collection.
- Finish with DONE.
- Use Manage under Approved content only to revise selections.
Why it matters: In practice, search is unavailable in this mode. Preview every approval, especially a whole channel whose future uploads could differ.
Turn YouTube Kids Search off
Search restrictions narrow discovery without creating a guarantee about every remaining video.
- Open Settings in the YouTube Kids app.
- Solve the multiplication challenge or enter your parental passcode.
- Select the child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Switch Search off.
Why it matters: Therefore, this also resets the profile’s viewing and search history. Review useful history first, and remember that parent shared content needs a separate check.
Disable YouTube Kids autoplay as a parent
A parental restriction is stronger than the child turning autoplay off in the player.
- Sign in to the YouTube app with the linked parent account.
- Tap You, then Settings and Family Center.
- Select the child’s profile or account.
- Turn Disable autoplay on.
Why it matters: For parents, the child cannot turn autoplay back on while this restriction applies. Agree a finish time as well.
Start a YouTube Kids session timer
The app timer stops viewing at the end of the chosen session.
- Open Settings and enter the parental passcode.
- Select Set Timer.
- Choose the duration with the slider or adjustment symbols.
- Tap START TIMER.
- When time ends, an adult can enter settings and choose EXIT TIMER or start another session.
Why it matters: Consequently, this is a session timer, rather than an automatic daily allowance across all devices. A child who knows the parental challenge or code can weaken it.
Manage a supervised account with Family Link
Use this route when the child has a Google Account managed by a parent.
- Open Family Link on the parent’s device.
- Select the child.
- Open Controls, then YouTube.
- Review the options under YouTube Kids Settings.
- Choose the suitable content setting and check Search.
- For approved content setup, use the YouTube Kids app.
Why it matters: In addition, profile and supervised account controls are not identical. Check each device and keep unrestricted YouTube access under separate control.
YouTube Kids Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Block an unwanted YouTube Kids video or channel
Sign in before using content blocking.
- On the watch page, open More above the video.
- Select BLOCK.
- Choose Block this video only or Block entire channel.
- Select BLOCK and complete the displayed confirmation.
Why it matters: As a result, a channel block does not catch copies uploaded by other channels. In addition, signed out viewing can make previously blocked content accessible.
Report inappropriate videos
Reporting helps the service review a concern and is different from merely leaving the video.
- Open the video’s watch page, then More.
- Select Report.
- Choose Inappropriate visuals, Inappropriate audio or Other as appropriate.
- Stop viewing and support the child.
Why it matters: For this reason, when reported while signed in, the video is also blocked in YouTube Kids. However, a report does not guarantee immediate platform removal.
Review YouTube Kids Watch it again with the child
Use the child’s viewing device to review recent activity.
- On mobile or tablet, open Your stuff, then Watch it again.
- On a computer, select the profile picture in the top corner to view watched videos.
- Discuss unfamiliar or upsetting material together.
- Block or report concerning titles when needed.
Why it matters: In practice, this view only shows videos watched on that device. Paused or cleared history leaves gaps, so it is not a complete activity report.
Pause watch history when appropriate
Pausing changes the signals used for recommendations.
- Open Settings in the YouTube Kids app.
- Solve the multiplication challenge or enter your parental passcode.
- Select the child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Turn Pause watch history on.
Why it matters: Therefore, new viewing stops contributing to recommendations and Watch it again. Consequently, less review history may be available.
Pause search history or clear it
These choices affect recommendations and stored history, rather than content suitability.
- Open Settings in the YouTube Kids app.
- Solve the multiplication challenge or enter your parental passcode.
- Select the child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Turn Pause search history on if you do not want new searches used as recommendation signals.
- To reset stored history instead, select CLEAR HISTORY and confirm with OK.
- Review useful history before clearing it.
Why it matters: For parents, clearing resets recommendations. However, it should not be treated as a full deletion of every Google data record.
Review shared content from the adult account
Parent shared videos can sit outside the usual YouTube Kids selection. Therefore, review them separately.
- In YouTube Kids, open Your stuff, then SHARED.
- Beside an unwanted video, select More, then Remove from shared.
- To clear all shared content, open parent Settings, enter the passcode and select the child.
- Under Clear shared content, select CLEAR SHARED.
Why it matters: Consequently, remove material you no longer want available. Sharing a video from the adult’s YouTube account is an active approval decision.
Check casting on the child’s device
Casting moves playback to another screen. Its availability and who can change it depend on the account arrangement.
- Open Settings in YouTube Kids.
- Select Casting and turn it off if it is not needed.
- Check which devices the child can still access.
- For a supervised Google Account, discuss the fact that the child can control casting.
Why it matters: In addition, a local casting choice is not an enforced household content filter. Review the receiving screen and its other accounts.
Use a Parent code on a shared television
The main YouTube TV app has a separate code to protect account switching.
- Open YouTube on the TV.
- From its homepage, choose Settings and Parent code.
- Follow the prompts to create a private four digit code.
- Check signed out viewing and switching into adult accounts.
Why it matters: As a result, the code applies to that TV. Other devices need separate checks, and the code is not Google account authentication.
Review Premium downloads and background listening
Premium adds offline and background features. These are convenience features, rather than extra content safeguards.
- In parent Settings, open Background & Downloads.
- Turn Smart downloads off if you prefer to choose offline material yourself.
- Keep Download over Wi-Fi only on to avoid unwanted mobile data use.
- For an unwanted saved video, open its More menu and choose Delete from downloads.
- Use Delete downloads in the download settings to remove all saved videos when needed.
- Check Background & offline and keep Background play off if listening should stop with the screen.
Why it matters: For this reason, smart downloads are enabled by default with the feature, while background play starts off. Offline videos and screen off listening need their own review.
Remove an unused YouTube Kids profile
Profile deletion is different from deleting the child’s Google Account or cancelling Premium.
- Open Settings in the YouTube Kids app.
- Solve the multiplication challenge or enter your parental passcode.
- Select the child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Open More at the top corner and choose Delete this profile.
- Read the confirmation before completing deletion.
Why it matters: In practice, check which account or profile you are removing. Separately review any paid membership and its billing provider.
YouTube Kids Safety Settings for Family Viewing
Choose YouTube Kids safety settings together and explain them in language your child understands. Watch unfamiliar videos before approving them. Approving a collection or channel deserves more attention than approving one known video.
Keep the adult password and parental passcode private. In addition, review device app installation, alternate browsers and access to ordinary YouTube. A protected profile cannot control everything available outside it.
For younger children, short shared viewing sessions make it easier to discuss adverts, scary scenes and misleading claims. Encourage them to stop and tell you when a video feels wrong.
For teenagers moving to another YouTube experience, review the separate account rules and controls before changing access. Do not automatically treat the broadest content option as suitable because of a birthday.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Automated filtering and recommendations can miss unsuitable or misleading material. Therefore, a video’s presence in YouTube Kids is not an endorsement of its accuracy or developmental value.
Paid adverts are labelled, but user uploaded videos about toys or brands are not necessarily classified as paid ads. Premium removes paid ads, rather than every commercial message inside a video.
Use a nickname where appropriate, but provide accurate age information. Do not follow advice to inflate a child’s age for broader access. Read the privacy notice that applies to the actual account arrangement.
Review microphone permission when voice search is used. Likewise, assess linked smart displays and other household screens separately because they can provide different routes to content.
If an upsetting video appears, reassure the child, stop viewing and report it. For broader safeguarding concerns, use appropriate support rather than relying on a content report alone.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Google’s independent account age varies by country, including Ireland’s age of 16. Device availability, Premium features and account setup also vary. Keep YouTube Kids safety settings separate from legal assumptions about consent.
Google currently documents View conversation topics for parents of supervised child accounts in the US in English, with enough eligible watch history. This is not a universal Irish or UK viewing report.
On a computer, some YouTube Kids parent menus use a Lock icon where the mobile app uses Settings. Match the instructions to your child’s account and current device. The TV Parent code belongs to the main YouTube app.
YouTube Kids Safety Settings Checklist

YouTube Kids Safety Settings Questions
Are YouTube Kids safety settings a guarantee?
No. Review content and viewing with your child even when filters and parental controls are enabled.
Is the timer a daily limit?
It stops the selected app session. Use device controls for broader daily allowances and access to other apps.
Does Watch it again show everything?
It shows activity from that device and can have gaps when history is paused, cleared or content removed.
Does Premium remove every commercial message?
It removes paid advertising in the experience. A video can still feature products or brands.
Is a child’s secret code the parental passcode?
No. The profile’s secret code and the parent’s control passcode serve different purposes. Keep the parental code private.
