VRChat Safety Settings

VRChat app icon for this safety settings guide

VRChat safety settings help parents review the social platform built around user created worlds and avatars. It runs on several devices, including a computer without a headset. Shared creativity can attract teenagers, alongside substantial contact with strangers.

For young people, shared activities can offer enjoyment, creativity and belonging. However, conversations, spending and pressure to keep playing need separate attention. This guide explains the documented protections, their limitations and practical family choices.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

VRChat’s rules require users to be at least 13. Children under 13 cannot use it or create an account, even with a parent nearby. A content classification is separate: the Irish Apple listing currently shows 13+. Neither threshold guarantees child suitability.

For parents, user created avatars, live conversations and world content can include sexual themes, abuse and disturbing material. Safety controls need review alongside the teenager’s maturity and behaviour. Do not create an adult account to give a younger child access.

Age assurance and content restrictions can differ by region and rollout. VRChat’s June safety update describes staged UK changes without a guaranteed worldwide date. Therefore, check what the account actually offers rather than assuming a proposal already protects users in Ireland.

VRChat Parental Controls and Restrictions

Treat in game safety choices as user controls rather than assuming a parent has locked them. VRChat’s parent guidance recommends reviewing access through the device platform. For eligible teenagers, use the correct account and continue active conversations about worlds, friends and private contact.

VRChat parental controls for headset time

For a linked Meta child or teen account, use the parent’s Family Centre. These controls manage headset use separately from game permissions.

  • Open the Meta Horizon app on the parent’s phone.
  • Tap Menu, then Family Centre.
  • Under Family members, choose the child and tap Manage time limits.
  • Set the available daily allowance and breaks. Then check the saved schedule with the child.

Why it matters: A headset limit does not govern a separate computer or another account. If the controls are unavailable, check the family link with Meta support.

VRChat parental controls for Apple purchases

For parents, enable Screen Time before configuring Apple billing. A free download can still contain paid items.

  • Open Settings, then Screen Time on the managed iPhone or iPad.
  • Next, select Apps and Websites, App Store, then In-app Purchases and Blocked.

Why it matters: This is the current iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 route. It covers Apple billing, so separately review purchases through another store or website.

VRChat safety settings for Android time limits

Similarly, use the child’s supervised Google account to set a time allowance. Agree the stopping point before play.

  • Open Family Link and select the child.
  • Choose Screen time, Time limits and App limits.
  • Select VRChat, choose Set limit, set the allowance and tap Done.

Why it matters: Check that the limit applies to the device the child actually uses. Another device or an adult account may remain available.

VRChat Safety Settings and Why They Matter

VRChat safety settings for content filtering

First, review Content Gating for tagged avatars and worlds. It filters categories rather than judging everything another person says or does.

  • Open the Quick Menu, then the Main Menu button at the top right.
  • Select Settings, then Comfort & Safety.
  • Under Content Gating, review the filters for Sexually suggestive, Adult language and themes, Graphic violence, Excessive gore and Extreme horror.
  • Enable the restrictions appropriate to the teenager. On iOS, the sexually suggestive filter cannot be toggled.

Why it matters: Filters depend on content labels and can miss incorrectly tagged material. Regional age restrictions may also prevent changing a filter. Report missing or inaccurate labels.

VRChat safety settings for the Safety Shield

Next, the Safety Shield limits other users’ avatar features. A high Trust Rank reflects platform activity, not proof that someone is safe for a teenager.

  • Open the Main Menu and its Safety page.
  • Select Maximum when the most restrictive preset is appropriate.
  • For Custom, review each Trust Rank and the displayed voice, avatar, audio, effects and animation choices.
  • Check friends separately. Review any individual Show Avatar override that bypasses the selected shield.

Why it matters: A familiar friend can still use an unsuitable avatar or behave harmfully. Therefore, do not relax the shield merely because an account has a high rank.

Use VRChat Safe Mode quickly

For sudden overwhelming content, practise the emergency shortcut before anyone needs it. Safe Mode temporarily applies restrictive user feature settings.

  • On a computer keyboard, press Shift and Escape together.
  • On supported VR controllers, pull both triggers and press both system menu buttons.
  • Then leave the uncomfortable interaction and check the selected safety level before continuing.

Why it matters: Shortcuts differ with controls and device support. Learn the applicable route together. Safe Mode does not report the behaviour or replace leaving.

VRChat privacy settings for Personal Space

Similarly, Personal Space hides nearby users from view. This can reduce unwanted closeness, but it is not a complete communication block.

  • Open the Main Menu, then Settings and Comfort & Safety.
  • Turn Personal Space on.
  • Test the result with someone you know before entering a busy space.

Why it matters: You can still hear nearby people. Use a voice mute, block or leave when an interaction is unwanted.

Mute or block unwanted VRChat contact

For unwanted speech or behaviour, use the person’s controls. Muting and blocking have different effects.

  • Open the Quick Menu and select the person.
  • Select User Voice to mute their voice.
  • Choose Block User to remove mutual visibility. Leave the instance if the problem continues.

Why it matters: A blocked person can still affect shared world objects in ways you notice. Other players may still see both of you, so blocking does not isolate the whole room.

VRChat privacy settings for friends and instances

For planned sessions, review both the friends list and who can join. A private sounding label can still allow wider access.

  • Open a person’s profile and select Unfriend when the connection is unwanted.
  • When creating a session, choose the world, select New Instance and inspect its access type.
  • Prefer a suitably restricted instance for the planned group. Friends+ allows friends of friends, unlike Friends.
  • Review social status before relying on an invitation setting. Join Me can broaden access under some instance rules.

Why it matters: Instance privacy controls attendance, not the behaviour of admitted people. A friends list can include strangers who gained trust over time.

For access types, Public and Group Public allow anyone. Group restricts attendance by membership or role, while Group+ can admit wider friendship networks. Invite excludes friends of friends, while Invite+ can admit them after a request. Nevertheless, Join Me status can change the invitation behaviour. Verified adult instances do not provide a child safe area.

Report harmful VRChat users or content

For rule breaking, report the relevant person, avatar, world or group. Then help the teenager step away from the interaction.

  • Open the Quick Menu and select the relevant user or content.
  • Choose Report and follow the displayed category prompts.
  • For a detailed concern, use VRChat support and choose the appropriate safety request.

Why it matters: A report asks the provider to review conduct. It does not guarantee an immediate decision, and another account may still contact the teenager.

Secure a registered VRChat account

For registered VRChat accounts, an authenticator adds a second login step. Protect the linked email too, and never share codes with another player.

  • Sign in to the official VRChat website and open Edit Profile.
  • Scroll to Two-Factor Authentication and follow the authenticator setup instructions.
  • Store the backup codes privately and confirm that the account shows the protection as active.

Why it matters: This route does not configure security for a Steam, Meta or other platform login. Secure those accounts through their own provider.

Manage VRChat subscription renewal

For VRC+, identify the original seller before cancelling. A subscription is separate from a safety setting and does not make strangers trustworthy.

  • Find the receipt and identify the platform that billed the subscription.
  • For Steam, open Account Details, then Manage Subscriptions and cancel the relevant renewal.
  • For another seller, follow its cancellation route from VRChat’s subscription support page. Check the confirmation and renewal date.

Why it matters: Cancelling renewal does not automatically request a refund. Deleting VRChat or its account is not a substitute for checking the billing service.

Request VRChat account deletion carefully

Finally, account deletion can permanently remove uploaded content and account access. Resolve purchases and anything you need to retain first.

  • Open the account profile on the VRChat Home website.
  • Scroll to Additional Options, then select Delete Account.
  • Read the instructions and consequences before submitting a request.

Why it matters: The official guide describes a 14 day waiting period, during which logging in cancels deletion. This route is for VRChat accounts, not deletion of a platform account.

How to Use VRChat Safely

For a teenager using VRChat, discuss the worlds and groups they visit rather than focusing only on time spent. Explore a restricted instance together where appropriate. In VR, keep a clear play area, follow the device’s health guidance and stop if anyone feels unwell.

For parents, ask your child to show you a normal session. Review who joins, what they enjoy and what makes stopping difficult. In addition, practise leaving an uncomfortable interaction without arguing or explaining personal details.

Similarly, agree that an online friendship never requires secrecy, private photographs, money or contact through another app. A familiar username or impressive score does not prove someone’s age or identity. Keep school, home address and daily routines out of profiles and conversations.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

However, VRChat safety settings cannot judge another person’s intentions. Social pressure, sexual comments, threats and requests for private contact deserve attention even when a player seems friendly. Ask about behaviour rather than judging trust from an avatar, status badge or shared interests.

If someone threatens or sexually pressures a child, stay calm and listen. Stop contact, preserve relevant nonsexual messages where safe and use reporting tools. Do not download or forward sexual images of children. Reassure the child that asking for help will not get them into trouble.

In Ireland, contact An Garda Síochána about suspected grooming or exploitation. In an emergency, call 112 or 999. CODA education and website guidance do not replace an urgent safeguarding response.

For families, protect sleep, schoolwork, meals and time away from screens. Agree spending before opening the shop, and review pressure from limited offers or other players. If play repeatedly causes distress, discuss the pattern together and seek suitable support.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

Use VRChat support for account or safety concerns. Provide the relevant account or content details privately. For age correction or verification difficulties, follow support rather than creating an adult profile or sending identity documents to another player.

For families in Ireland, the UK and the USA, VRChat safety settings can differ by account age, device and rollout. A store rating, account permission and identity check answer different questions. Therefore, inspect the actual child account rather than borrowing an adult login to bypass a restriction.

VRChat safety settings for saved Apple payments

For an Apple billed purchase, review the paying Apple Account. Removing its card affects other Apple services too.

  • Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad and select the account holder’s name.
  • Select Payment & Shipping, then Edit.
  • Next, select the Delete button beside the payment method and Remove to confirm.

Why it matters: Apple may require a payment method for subscriptions, an unpaid balance or purchase sharing. Use Apple’s payment removal help if removal is unavailable. Do not disable family protections just to remove a card.

VRChat safety settings for saved Google payments

For Google Play billing, check the purchasing Google account. A browser checkout can use a different seller.

  • On Android, open Google Play and select the Profile icon.
  • Select Payments & subscriptions, then Payment methods and More payment settings.
  • If asked, sign in to the paying account. Under the unwanted method, select Remove, then Remove again.

Why it matters: This changes that Google account’s saved payment method. It does not cancel renewal, remove another seller’s card or stop spending existing currency. Check Google’s payment instructions for device variations.

VRChat safety settings for Apple refund requests

If the receipt names Apple, use Apple’s refund service. First, identify the account and the exact transaction.

  • Open Apple Report a Problem and sign in with the purchasing Apple Account.
  • Select I’d like to, then Request a refund. Choose the reason and select Next.
  • Choose the relevant purchase, then select Submit. Check the request status afterwards.
  • For shared family charges, the organiser can select the Apple Account button, then All, to find the purchase.

Why it matters: Eligibility varies by purchase and region. A request does not guarantee a refund or cancel future renewal. Use Apple’s refund guidance if a charge is missing or pending. Keep receipts private.

VRChat safety settings for Google Play refund requests

For a Google Play receipt in Ireland, use Google’s EEA and UK request route. Other regions have different policies.

  • Sign in at Google Play with the account that made the purchase and select the Profile picture.
  • Select Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history.
  • Find the order and select Report a problem. Choose the reason, complete the refund request and select Submit.

Why it matters: Use Google’s regional refund guidance to check eligibility and support options. Refund approval, billing cancellation and purchase approval are separate. If content was not delivered, the developer can also help.

VRChat safety settings for saved Meta payments

A headset account can have its own saved payment method. Review the paying account separately from the game profile.

  • Open Meta’s payment removal guide and choose the option for owning a Quest or using Meta Horizon.
  • Select Remove a payment method, then follow its Payment settings link.
  • In the correct purchasing account, select the unwanted payment method and Remove. Check the result.

Why it matters: A method supporting an active subscription may need a replacement or cancellation first. Removing it does not undo earlier purchases or cancel renewal. Existing balances need separate review.

VRChat safety settings for Meta refund requests

Meta’s ordinary digital refund route covers eligible apps and games. Do not assume it covers a paid item inside a free game.

  • Open the Meta Horizon app on the phone using the purchasing account.
  • Select Menu at the top of the Horizon Feed, then Purchase history under Payment and subscriptions.
  • Select Options beside the purchase, then Request refund and complete the offered instructions.
  • For a child’s Meta account, the guardian first signs in with their own information and continues as the child to access the purchase.

Why it matters: The ordinary policy requires a request within 14 days and under two hours of use. It excludes in app purchases and subscriptions. Use Meta’s refund and support guidance for the applicable route and terms. Never promise reimbursement for currency or cosmetics.

VRChat safety settings for Steam billing help

For a Steam receipt, use the purchasing Steam account. A game refund differs from a currency or subscription complaint.

  • Open Steam Support, sign in and select Purchases.
  • Select the transaction and the problem, then I’d like to request a refund where offered.
  • Choose the offered refund destination, complete the form and submit it. Check the confirmation email.
  • For saved billing details or renewal, open Account Details and review the payment or subscription concerned. Use Steam Support if the required change is unavailable.

Why it matters: Steam’s request instructions explain the normal game policy of under two hours and within 14 days. Different product rules apply to in game purchases and subscriptions. Card removal does not empty a Steam Wallet or cancel renewal.

For VRC+, VRChat describes its subscription as nonrefundable. Cancellation remains with the purchasing platform. Use VRChat’s subscription support for payment problems and cancellation routes. This does not remove applicable consumer rights.

VRChat parental controls across family devices

The game account does not replace the device’s family setup. Use the relevant instructions for each device the child actually uses.

Why it matters: Phone supervision does not automatically control a headset, console or another account. Also review that platform’s family settings. Existing balances, browser stores and external chat can remain available despite an app purchase block.

VRChat Safety Settings Checklist

  • First, confirm the correct age, account and device.
  • Next, review friends, group access and any external messaging apps.
  • In addition, check spending and time controls on every device used.
  • Practise leaving, muting and reporting together.
  • Finally, revisit VRChat safety settings after updates or changes to the account.

VRChat Safety Settings Questions

Do these settings guarantee safety?

No. Controls reduce particular risks, but another player can still lie, pressure or upset someone. Therefore, keep regular conversations alongside the settings and help the child seek support early. Never treat an age check as proof of good intentions.

Will one setting cover every device?

No. A child can use a different profile, device or payment service. For example, a phone spending restriction does not establish the same protection on a computer. Review linked accounts and the actual route your child uses to play.
