U Safety Settings

U logo for the safety settings guide

U, formerly UKTV Play, is a free television streaming service for viewers in the UK. It offers comedy, drama, entertainment and documentaries from channels including U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday. Teenagers may enjoy comedy and box sets, while families may choose selected factual programmes. This guide explains U safety settings for parents.

Start by choosing a suitable programme. Then set the local parental PIN and check it on every viewing device. U safety settings help restrict guidance labelled content, but they do not turn an adult entertainment catalogue into a children’s service.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

UKTV’s terms say you must be over 16 to create an account. For a child under 16, the parent or guardian must register, give permission and supervise use. Do not enter an older birth date to give a child an independent account.

The UK Apple listing rates U 16+ with in app controls. This is an app rating, rather than approval of each programme for every teenager. Crime drama, sexual themes, strong language and distressing factual material require individual assessment.

A Guidance label signals that the programme needs attention. Neither a PIN nor a declared date of birth proves a viewer’s age or readiness for that title.

U Parental Controls and Restrictions

Set the U parental PIN

U uses a local four digit PIN for programmes carrying a guidance label. The official help page links directly to parental controls.

  • Sign in to your adult U account on the device being protected.
  • Open the Account section and its parental controls, or use Setting your parental pin on the official Help page.
  • Enable parental control and follow the prompts to choose a private four digit PIN.
  • Complete the on screen confirmation.
  • Check a programme with a Guidance label without entering the code.

Why it matters: As a result, the check confirms whether that player requests the PIN. However, an unlabelled programme can still be unsuitable for your child.

Check U parental controls separately on every device

The official FAQ says parental protection must be set on each device individually, even with the same account.

  • List the televisions, streaming sticks, phones, tablets and browsers the family uses.
  • Repeat the Account parental PIN setup on each one.
  • Test guidance labelled playback on every player.
  • Retest when an app is reinstalled, a browser is cleared or a device is replaced.
  • If the PIN option differs, use official U Help before allowing independent viewing.

Why it matters: For this reason, a single successful phone setup does not establish protection elsewhere. Consequently, another browser or an unprotected TV can leave access open.

Pair a television with the adult’s account

An adult should control account linking. Pairing is separate from configuring the local parental PIN.

  • Register or sign in on the official U website.
  • Open the official U app on the television or streaming device.
  • Follow its sign in prompts to display an activation code.
  • Visit u.co.uk/activate on your own device and enter the displayed code.
  • Finish linking, then configure and test parental controls on the television.

Why it matters: In practice, do not share an activation code with a stranger. Linking an account alone does not prove that the TV has its PIN enabled.

U Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Protect the account and review privacy choices

Account details, viewing activity and advertising deserve adult attention. UKTV’s privacy policy explains the data it handles.

  • Use a unique password for the adult U account.
  • Keep the recovery email protected and do not share its access with the child.
  • Read the official UKTV Privacy Policy and the site’s cookie choices.
  • Review the personal information in your account and remove optional details you do not need to provide.
  • Contact U promptly if someone uses the account without permission.

Why it matters: Therefore, a content PIN is different from account security. In addition, declining optional tracking does not make viewing anonymous or stop every advert.

Report a programme concern to U

Stop unsuitable viewing immediately rather than waiting for a complaint outcome.

  • Pause the programme and talk with the child.
  • Record the programme title, episode and approximate scene time.
  • Open Contact us from U Help.
  • Describe the content or guidance warning concern without including unnecessary information about your child.
  • Keep the title off the family viewing list until you have assessed it.

Why it matters: For parents, the broadcaster can investigate a specific report more easily. Nevertheless, reporting does not automatically block that title for your household.

Close an unused U account carefully

UKTV’s terms direct account owners to the profile instructions for termination.

  • Sign in to the adult account and open its profile.
  • Follow the account termination instructions shown there.
  • Read the consequences before confirming closure.
  • Use official U Contact if you cannot find the closure route.
  • Sign out on devices you sell or give away and remove your account during the device reset.

Why it matters: Consequently, this reduces leftover account access. Closing an account is different from clearing one browser’s local information.

Family Viewing with U Safety Settings

For parents, U safety settings work best with a short agreed list of programmes. Read each description and guidance warning before a younger child watches. A familiar channel name is not a child suitability label.

For teenagers, discuss humour, stereotypes, frightening scenes and the difference between factual claims and entertainment. Preview unfamiliar crime documentaries together when the subject may be upsetting.

Agree a stopping point before starting a box set. Use your device’s time and app access controls if a household agreement needs an enforced limit. The parental PIN does not provide a daily viewing allowance.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

U includes advertising to fund free viewing. Therefore, explain persuasive adverts and promotional messages separately from programme content. An advert or sponsorship is not a recommendation from CODA.

The service says it does not request payment details for ordinary registration. Check suspicious activation websites and avoid paying a stranger to unlock a free account.

Guidance protection does not replace supervision or a chosen programme list. Do not assume there is a child profile, a detailed age slider or an approved content mode unless the current app explicitly provides it.

If a child follows programme discussions onto social media, those services have separate contact and privacy risks. Keep conversations about upsetting material open and calm.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

The U streaming service is available in the UK. UKTV channels offered through a television package in Ireland do not establish access to the separate U app.

U’s current FAQ says live streaming of its free channels has been removed from U apps. Viewers can browse or search for on demand programmes instead. Availability and rights vary by programme and device.

Menus differ across televisions, phones and browsers. Use U safety settings on the actual player your child uses and keep its software current.

Checklist for U Safety Settings

  • Have an eligible adult register for younger viewers.
  • Choose suitable programmes before playback.
  • Set and test the parental PIN on each device.
  • Keep activation codes, passwords and PINs private.
  • Review privacy and cookie choices.
  • Agree a finish time and use device limits where needed.
  • Use official support for unsuitable content or account concerns.

Questions about U Safety Settings

Is UKTV Play still a separate service?

The service is now U. Existing material may use the older UKTV Play name.

Do U safety settings apply to every linked device?

The official FAQ says to configure parental controls individually on each device. Check the actual player before independent use.

Can I stream U in Ireland?

The U app and website service are restricted to the UK. A television package carrying UKTV channels is a separate arrangement.
