Rocket League is a competitive game that combines football with driving. Players use rocket powered cars to hit a large ball into the other team’s goal, often working with teammates in short matches. Younger children may enjoy the colourful cars and straightforward objective, while teenagers may enjoy improving their skills, climbing rankings and playing with friends. However, online matches can bring contact with strangers, and cosmetic items can encourage spending. Rocket League safety settings help parents manage these parts of play.
This guide explains the game’s chat, quick messages, cross platform play, blocking and reporting, alongside shared Epic parental controls. Start with the correct account and its real date of birth. Then review the game and console or computer settings together. Keep restrictions proportionate to the child’s age, and make it easy for them to leave a match or ask for help.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Epic describes Rocket League as Everyone under ESRB, while online interactions remain outside that content rating. Check the regional rating on the exact game listing. A low content rating does not mean every player, username or conversation suits a younger child.
Epic can apply a Cabined Account when the declared age is below 13 or the country’s relevant consent age, whichever is higher. Voice, text and other features can remain restricted until a parent completes consent. Do not use an inaccurate age to remove those restrictions.
This guide covers the main Rocket League game. Rocket League Sideswipe is a separate mobile game with different features. Similarly, parental verification does not make other players trustworthy or prevent contact through another service.
Restrictions Available
Epic account permissions and the local Rocket League chat settings have different roles. Keep the parent’s PIN private, review existing platform friends and check each gaming device. Fortnite’s native time controls do not establish a Rocket League timer.
Set up shared Epic parental controls
The parental PIN protects the account’s permission settings.
- Open the official Epic Games account portal and sign in to the child’s existing account.
- Select Parental Controls and set up the six digit parental PIN.
- Complete any required parent consent using an email controlled by the adult.
Why it matters: Use the existing console linked account so you manage the account used in the game. Do not share the parent’s email access or PIN.
Limit Epic voice permission
Voice permission sets the broad audience allowed to talk with the child.
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account. Open Parental Controls and enter the parent’s PIN.
- Set Epic Voice Chat Permission to Nobody or Friends Only as appropriate.
Why it matters: Team and connection options can include strangers. Age restrictions limit available choices. Configure console voice parties separately.
Limit Epic text permission
Text permission restricts written communication through supported Epic features.
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account. Open Parental Controls and enter the parent’s PIN.
- Set Epic Text Chat Permission to Nobody or the reviewed friends option.
Why it matters: Standard Quick Chat phrases may remain available. Configure the game’s Match Chat and Party Chat separately.
Require approval for new friends
A PIN check gives the parent a decision before new Epic friendships.
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account. Open Parental Controls and enter the parent’s PIN.
- Turn Require a PIN to Add Friends on.
Why it matters: Existing friends are not automatically removed. Platform friends need their own review, and this feature does not work in the same way in Sideswipe.
Require approval for Epic payments
A payment PIN protects covered real money purchases.
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account. Open Parental Controls and enter the parent’s PIN.
- Turn Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments on.
- Review the account’s purchases and the billing provider before approving further spending.
Why it matters: The setting does not protect every console store or existing Credits balance. Check Rocket Pass, bundles and subscriptions separately.
Set supported Windows or Xbox time limits
Device controls can add a Rocket League play allowance.
- Connect the child’s device to Microsoft Family Safety with the child’s own account.
- Select the child, then the relevant Windows or Xbox platform.
- Open Apps, features, and games. Enable App and game limits, select Rocket League and set the daily allowance and permitted hours.
Why it matters: These limits cover supported linked devices. They do not establish coverage on PlayStation, Nintendo or every phone. Review those providers separately.
Rocket League Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Turn off Match Chat and Party Chat
The two text channels need separate choices.
- From the main menu, open Settings, then Chat.
- Set Match Chat to Allow Text Chat with Nobody (Off).
- Set Party Chat to Allow Text Chat with Nobody (Off) too.
Why it matters: Preset Quick Chat can remain. Turning off only one channel leaves the other channel available.
Review Quick Chat separately
Quick Chat uses preset phrases rather than freely typed messages.
- Open Settings and Chat.
- Use the Quick Chat dropdown to select Off if even preset messages are unwanted.
Why it matters: Preset messages can still feel hostile when repeated. Discuss the child’s experience rather than assuming preset wording is always harmless.
Disable voice in the game
The voice dropdown controls the local game voice feature.
- Open Settings, then Chat and View Voice Chat Settings.
- Select Off beside Voice Chat.
Why it matters: Use the dedicated voice instructions, as one broader Epic page contains a text chat label in its voice steps. Separate platform parties may still be active.
Configure a microphone mute control
A clear mute key helps the child avoid transmitting private conversation.
- Open Settings, then Controls and View/Change Bindings.
- Find Voice Chat (Push to Talk/Toggle Mute) and assign a suitable key or button.
- Check the muted state before speaking near the device.
Why it matters: A microphone mute does not stop incoming voices. Leaving voice chat offers a broader break from the conversation.
Mute an individual voice participant
Muting can quickly stop hearing a particular player.
- During a match, open the Friends List and Voice Channels.
- Select the player and choose Mute.
Why it matters: Mute and report have different purposes. Use blocking for unwanted ongoing contact, and report abusive behaviour where appropriate.
Keep text reporting available
Reporting settings determine whether recent text can be submitted for review.
- Open Settings and Chat.
- Set Text Chat Reporting to Always on where it is selectable.
Why it matters: Reporting stays on in game chats and conversations involving under 18s. The feature does not mean a moderator watches every conversation live.
Report and block during or after a match
Reporting identifies misconduct, while blocking restricts further contact.
- In a match, open the menu and Report Player/Block Player.
- Choose the player, select Report and the relevant reasons. Select Block separately if needed.
- After a match, use Report/Block player, or open Friends List, Recent Players and the player’s name.
Why it matters: Blocking hides presence and mutes contact from that account. A platform friendship can remain, so block there too where necessary.
Review cross platform play
Cross platform matchmaking can include players using other gaming services.
- Open Settings, then Gameplay.
- Clear the Cross-Platform Play checkbox if your family wants to restrict this matchmaking.
Why it matters: This does not remove strangers on the same platform. Matchmaking may take longer, and platform account permissions can also affect access.
Use private matches for reviewed groups
Private matches can reduce reliance on public matchmaking.
- Open Play, then Private Match and Create Private Match where the account is eligible.
- Review the session’s access settings before selecting Create Match.
- To join a reviewed session, select Join Private Match and use the host’s Name and Password.
Why it matters: Some restricted accounts cannot create named matches. Keep passwords within the reviewed group, and check who actually joins.
Review user generated names and activities
Clubs, tournaments and custom activities can introduce material beyond the base game.
- Check the participants and names before joining a club, tournament or private session.
- Use the player report tools for inappropriate behaviour or account names.
- Leave a session if its content or participants are unsuitable.
Why it matters: Epic documents creation restrictions for parent controlled accounts, but participation in others’ creations can remain. There is no verified universal content approval switch here.
Review subscriptions and stored virtual currency
Credits, passes and recurring bundles need a separate spending discussion.
- Open the Epic account’s Subscriptions and inspect any active Fortnite Crew plan linked to Rocket Pass benefits.
- Select Manage Subscription and cancel renewal with its original provider when it is unwanted.
- Review Credits balances and platform receipts before approving further purchases.
Why it matters: A payment PIN does not restrict every use of Credits. Uninstalling the game does not cancel billing or guarantee refunds.
Enable Epic two factor authentication
A second login check protects the account’s progress, items and connected games.
- Open the Epic account portal and Password and security.
- Under Two-Factor Authentication, select Set up for your chosen method and complete verification.
- If several methods are enabled, use its three dot menu and Make my primary 2FA method to choose your preferred one.
Why it matters: Also secure the email and linked console accounts. Never share codes or approve an unexpected login prompt.
Sign out unwanted Epic sessions
Session revocation helps remove access after a shared device or suspected compromise.
- Open the Epic account’s Password and security section.
- Find Sign out everywhere and select Sign out.
- Enter the code sent to the registered email and refresh the page.
Why it matters: Use a new unique password if the old one was exposed. This does not replace securing separately linked accounts.
Request Epic account data
An account report lets you review information held about the account.
- Open the Epic account page and Download account information. Select Request Download.
- When the readiness email arrives, follow its official link and sign in again.
- Select Download file, enter the emailed security code and select Continue.
Why it matters: Keep the downloaded report private. It is not a guarantee that every game message or other player’s copy is included.
Delete an Epic account carefully
Deletion affects the games and purchases connected to the whole Epic account.
- Cancel subscriptions and preserve wanted information first.
- Open the Epic account page, find Delete account and read its warning.
- Select Delete account, verify the emailed code, choose the reason and complete Continue.
Why it matters: Purchases and progress can be lost. Official help gives different reactivation and final processing periods. Read the current warning before committing, and request eligible refunds first.
How to Use Rocket League Safely
Rocket League safety settings should reflect whether your child plays with reviewed friends or enters public matchmaking. For younger children, practise in a familiar group before opening wider contact. Explain that a short match can still contain upsetting language or pressure to keep playing.
Agree a finishing point before queuing for another match. Discuss paid cosmetics without linking them to personal worth or skill. Report scams and keep the child’s account, login codes and payment details out of other players’ hands.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Discuss bullying, pressure to share pictures and invitations to move into private conversations. A friendly player may still be a stranger. Children should know they can leave, block someone and ask for help without losing your support.
Treat free currency, account upgrades, giveaways and unofficial downloads cautiously. Never give another player a password, recovery code or payment information. Similarly, keep names, school details, addresses and private family conversations out of profiles, screenshots and chat.
If a child receives threats or sexual requests, stop contact and seek appropriate safeguarding help. Preserve usernames, dates and ordinary messages where safe. Do not copy or forward sexual images of children. In immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. A child can contact Childline for support. Report suspected child sexual abuse material through Hotline.ie.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Controls vary by Epic consent status, age, platform and game version. Review Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and computer accounts separately. Do not copy Sideswipe instructions into this guide.
Detailed voice report submission, display name privacy, saved payment removal, refunds and complete console timer or purchase routes remain awaiting verification. Epic’s account security and deletion controls are shared across connected games, so explain their wider effect before changing them.
No universal Rocket League location, camera or AI companion control is established here. Recordings, microphones, platform parties and external social apps require their own permission review.
Safety Checklist
- Check the correct account, age and consent status.
- Review Epic permissions and both local text channels.
- Configure Quick Chat, voice and microphone mute separately.
- Practise reporting and blocking, including platform friends.
- Review cross platform play, private session access and device timers.
- Check Credits, passes, subscriptions and secure recovery methods.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling typed text disable Quick Chat?
No. Quick Chat uses separate preset messages and has its own setting. Review it as well as Match Chat and Party Chat.
Does switching off cross platform play remove strangers?
No. Public matchmaking can still include strangers using the same platform. Use a reviewed group and suitable chat restrictions.
Can a Fortnite timer control Rocket League?
The documented Fortnite and UEFN native time limit does not establish a Rocket League limit. Use the relevant device or platform family controls.
