Roblox Safety Settings

Roblox safety settings guide artwork

Roblox is a platform where people play games made by other users and create their own games with Roblox Studio. Its games range from building and obstacle courses to role play and competitive challenges. Children and teenagers may enjoy exploring these worlds with friends, customising an avatar and returning to familiar games. However, each game can offer different content and social features. Understanding Roblox safety settings helps parents consider both the games and the people their child may meet.

This guide explains account linking, content restrictions, communication, spending and account security for parents and young people. Start with the child’s real date of birth and a separate parent account. Then check the controls together, including what changes as the child gets older. Settings can reduce unwanted contact and spending, but they cannot replace regular conversations or supervision.

Table of contents

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Roblox Kids generally covers ages 5 to 8, while Roblox Select generally covers ages 9 to 15. These age bands can vary by region. These accounts use a selected game catalogue. Standard Roblox begins at 16. Restricted content requires an age checked account aged 18 or older. These are platform access categories, separate from an app store rating or the maturity label of an individual game.

Roblox uses age checks for communication access. Facial age estimation and document verification are different processes with different data handling. Read the displayed privacy notice before providing evidence. Age checks do not establish that another player is trustworthy. Never send identity documents to someone in chat.

Content ratings include Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Content May Vary and adult restricted content. Content May Vary means the full questionnaire is incomplete, so the rating is less specific. Access depends on age checks, region and any permitted parent exception. Also, Roblox reserves extended AI chatbot interactions for age checked adults. Review each game rather than relying on its label alone.

Roblox Parental Controls for Parents

Use separate accounts rather than sharing a parent password. On a phone, open More to find Settings. On desktop, use the gear icon. The parent dashboard route below applies after linking. Only choose permissions that appear for your child’s actual age and region.

Roblox parental controls and parent account linking

A linked account lets an eligible adult manage the child’s controls remotely.

  • Open the child’s Settings, then Parental Controls and Add parent.
  • Then follow the invitation with your own parent account. Complete the adult verification using an offered method, then select Agree to link.
  • Finally open your own Settings and Parental Controls. Check that the correct child appears.

Why it matters: The parent must be at least 18 and complete the required check. Keep recovery access private. Unlinking removes parental oversight, so review every adult with management access.

Use Parent mode when available

Parent mode offers on-device approval when the child has no linked parent account. However, it is rolling out gradually.

  • When a request appears on the child’s device, have the child choose Ask in Person. Take the device and select Continue as a parent.
  • Then review the request and the displayed consent notices. Select Continue only when you understand and agree.
  • Next choose an offered adult verification method, then select Continue and complete its instructions. Read the privacy explanation first.
  • Next, check the child’s birthday. Use Edit if it is incorrect, then create a private six digit PIN.
  • Finally, select Close parent mode before returning the device. Send me an email starts linked parent account setup.

Why it matters: This route does not require a separate Roblox account. However, real time alerts need a linked parent account. Keep the PIN private and close Parent mode after use.

Official guidance: Use Parent mode when available.

Roblox safety settings for content maturity

This sets the maximum permitted content maturity level.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Content restrictions and Content maturity.
  • Move the slider to the level you have reviewed with your child.

Why it matters: Roblox safety settings let parents limit exposure to more mature themes. However, the slider does not govern Content May Vary games. Review Allowed games and preview access separately.

Roblox safety settings for blocking a game

An individual block applies even when a game falls within the chosen maturity level.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Content restrictions, then Blocked games.
  • Finally select +, search for the game, choose Block and confirm.

Why it matters: A blocked game can remain visible in search. If the child is already playing, the block takes effect on their next entry.

Roblox parental controls for game requests

An approval creates an exception for a particular game.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Pending requests. Choose Allow or Don’t Allow after reviewing the game.
  • To withdraw an exception, open Content restrictions and Allowed games. Select the game’s three dot menu and Don’t allow.

Why it matters: Review Roblox safety settings and the game’s social features before granting an exception. A friend’s invitation is not evidence that the game suits your child.

Roblox parental controls for sensitive issues

This controls games centred on sensitive social, political or religious topics.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Content restrictions, then Sensitive issues.
  • Finally turn Allow sensitive issues off where the setting is available.

Why it matters: Discuss difficult topics in an appropriate setting. Official Roblox pages disagree on some age thresholds, so check the dedicated maturity guidance and the child’s actual account.

Roblox parental controls for preview games

Early testing can expose a child to a game before normal publication and rating checks.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then open Settings you manage, Content restrictions and Preview games.
  • Finally choose No one to prevent preview invitations. Otherwise, review Similar age groups or trusted friends and the required age check.

Why it matters: For parents, a published game’s rating cannot cover every unfinished version. Preview access is regional, so an absent option should not be treated as an enabled protection.

Official guidance: Restrict preview games.

Roblox chat safety settings for game and direct chat

Game chat and direct chat control different conversations inside a game.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Communication and Experience chat. Set Experience chat to Off when in game conversations are unsuitable.
  • Next, set Direct chat to Off when private conversations are unsuitable. Check the child’s account after changing both controls.

Why it matters: Roblox safety settings require parental consent for game chat under 9. Those under 13 need consent for direct chat. Independently built chat systems may sit outside these controls.

Roblox chat settings for friends and Party

Party access and the audience for friend chat are separate decisions. Therefore, review both controls rather than relying on a friends list alone.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Communication and Chat and party with friends.
  • Next set Chat and party with friends to Off when grouping or chatting with friends is unsuitable.
  • Then review Friends chat. Choose No one, or limit it to reviewed Trusted friends where appropriate.

Why it matters: Age checks apply to wider chat choices. However, a trusted friend label does not prove someone’s identity. Review the person and the permission together.

Control Quick Words

Quick Words let players coordinate using approved short phrases across age groups.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then open Settings you manage, Communication and Gameplay coordination.
  • Finally set Quick Words to Off when this communication is unsuitable. Then check the child’s available chat features.

Why it matters: These phrases are separate from unrestricted typing. Also, creator chat and communication outside Roblox need their own review.

Official guidance: Control Quick Words.

Review trusted friend requests

Trusted friend status can unlock broader communication, depending on age and region.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then review Pending requests for a trusted friend request. Check the actual person before choosing Allow or Don’t Allow.
  • Then open Friends, select Manage or More, and use Trusted to review that group.

Why it matters: Children under 13 need parent permission to add trusted friends. However, knowing a display name is not the same as knowing the person behind it.

Official guidance: Review trusted friend requests.

Roblox safety settings for private servers

Private servers offer controlled entry, but their members can still behave inappropriately.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Visibility & private servers, then Private Servers.
  • Finally choose Friends for reviewed contacts or No one to prevent this access.

Why it matters: Check the people admitted to a server. A private server is not automatically moderated or appropriate for children.

Roblox parental controls for daily screen time

An eligible child account stops using Roblox when its daily allowance runs out.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then find Screen time and select Manage.
  • Then choose an allowance in the Daily limit dropdown. Check the saved limit with your child.

Why it matters: This Roblox safety setting limits access rather than simply giving a reminder. At 13, control changes to the young person. Use device controls for bedtime and other accounts.

Review playtime and games played

Activity insights help you start a conversation about how time is spent.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Screen time and Manage.
  • Finally review the activity chart and select Top games to discuss the games played.

Why it matters: Insights do not reveal every conversation or certify a game’s safety. Check settings again after age transitions.

Roblox parental controls for monthly spending

This caps covered real money purchases for an eligible child.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Spending restrictions and Monthly spending limit.
  • Finally enter your chosen amount, including zero where appropriate, and select Update.

Why it matters: This limit is one of the Roblox safety settings for new spending. It does not restrict an existing Robux balance. Gift card redemption and Xbox billing fall outside the documented cap. The monthly allowance does not carry over.

Enable purchase notifications and check Robux

Notifications show covered spending without preventing it.

  • Sign in to your linked parent account. Open Settings, select Parental Controls and choose your child.
  • Then open Spending restrictions and enable notifications for every transaction where offered.
  • Return to the child dashboard and check Robux for their balance.

Why it matters: Alerts can arrive after a purchase. Review subscriptions and platform receipts separately. Parental monthly spending controls generally stop applying at 13.

Roblox parental controls for Robux transfers

Robux transfers move an existing balance to trusted friends. They are separate from purchasing more currency.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Under Robux, select Manage. Open Transfer limits and turn on Manual limits.
  • Next enter the permitted Daily limit and Monthly limit, then select Save.
  • Next, open Approvals and choose Always ask when every transfer needs your decision. Review History for earlier transfers.
  • For a Send Robux request in Pending requests, select View. Review the amount and recipient before choosing Allow or Don’t allow.

Why it matters: For parents, a purchase cap does not replace transfer approval. Treat pressure to send currency as a reason to pause and discuss the contact, even when it is labelled trusted.

Official guidance: Set Robux transfer limits and approvals.

Manage activity emails and notifications

Weekly summaries and notification permissions have different purposes. Neither replaces an access limit.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Under Settings you manage, open Activity updates and enable its toggle if you want the weekly email.
  • Then open Notifications. Review Desktop notifications and Mobile push notifications and turn off unnecessary prompts.

Why it matters: For example, frequent prompts can interrupt homework or sleep. When notifications are allowed, the child can still adjust their own choices. Age changes can alter which controls you manage.

Official guidance: Manage activity emails and notifications.

Review permission for ID verification

Age and identity checks can involve sensitive information. Read the current privacy explanation before allowing them.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Facial and ID verification.
  • Next review Allow ID verification. Enable it only after considering the stated purpose, method and data processing notice.
  • Finally keep identity evidence within the official process. Never send it to another player or a supposed support contact in chat.

Why it matters: For parents, an identity check is not proof that another user behaves safely. Withholding permission may restrict features that require an age check.

Official guidance: Review permission for ID verification.

Review Studio collaboration

Studio permissions control who can create and communicate with a young developer. Therefore, review collaboration separately from permission to play a published game.

  • Open your linked parent account’s Settings, then Parental controls and your child’s account.
  • Then open Settings you manage, then Communication and Live collaboration in Studio.
  • Next choose No one, or the narrowest reviewed age group option. Wider options require the child to complete an age check.
  • Then review the selected collaborators and check the result on the child’s account.

Why it matters: Unpublished work can contain unsuitable material. Also, controls change as a child gets older, so check the age transition guidance before relying on an earlier restriction.

Roblox Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Roblox privacy settings for online presence

Presence controls reduce what others can learn about a playing session.

  • Open the young person’s Settings, then Privacy & content restrictions.
  • Then select Visibility & private servers, then Visibility.
  • Restrict Online Status and Show current experience to No one where offered. Turn Share activity updates off.

Why it matters: Age and region affect these Roblox safety settings and their available audiences. These controls cannot stop someone sharing information or screenshots elsewhere. Show current experience also affects who can join through the activity shown.

Review teen chat permissions

Teenagers may manage some controls themselves as parental authority changes.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy & content maturity and Communication where these labels appear.
  • Then review Chat and Party with friends and Voice chat with friends. Choose No one if conversation should be disabled.

Why it matters: Labels can vary between current help pages and accounts. Do not substitute an adult account to unlock options. Check which parent restrictions still apply.

Roblox chat settings for voice and microphones

A microphone mute and leaving voice chat are different actions.

  • In a game with voice, select Voice Chat and change Connected to Disconnected to leave voice.
  • Then select the microphone icon to mute your own microphone. Check its muted indicator before speaking nearby.
  • Mute another player through their speaker icon or the player menu when available.

Why it matters: These Roblox safety settings separate microphone muting from silencing other players. Voice eligibility varies and Roblox can process voice for safety. Console party chat needs separate controls.

Hide inventory and disable trading

Visible collectible items may attract unwanted offers or scams.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy & content restrictions and Trading & inventory.
  • Restrict Inventory visibility to No one where offered and turn trading off.

Why it matters: Check both permissions. Current trading requires age checks and eligible membership, with a limited United States promotion. Never use unofficial trades or send items first.

Use the trade quality filter when trading remains enabled

An eligible account can filter unwanted trade offers.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy & content restrictions and Trading & inventory.
  • Then set Trade quality filter to High for the strictest listed filter.
  • Decline offers you do not understand rather than approving them under pressure.

Why it matters: A filter is not a valuation guarantee. Completed trades are final, and an apparently fair offer may still form part of a scam.

Roblox privacy settings for contact discovery

Contact discovery can connect an account with names from another person’s address book.

  • Open Settings and Privacy. Turn off discovery by phone number where available.
  • Then use the contact data deletion option on the same privacy page if contacts were imported.
  • Revoke Roblox’s contacts permission on every device used for syncing.

Why it matters: Roblox privacy settings leave existing friendships in place after syncing stops. Turning off one device’s permission does not delete uploads from every device.

Review adult advertising and data sharing choices

These choices appear only for accounts eligible for adult advertising settings.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy and Ads Preferences.
  • Then turn Personalize your ads and Data selling and sharing off if you do not want those uses.

Why it matters: Known users under 18 cannot opt into these settings. Disabling personalisation does not remove every advertisement.

Verify a recovery email

A verified recovery address helps recover an account after a forgotten password.

  • Open Settings and Account Info. Add or check the recovery email.
  • Then open the verification email and complete the official verification link.

Why it matters: Use an address the family can reliably access. Phone recovery has age restrictions. Protect the email account as carefully as the game account.

Roblox account security with two step verification

A second verification method adds a check to password based logins.

  • Open Settings and Security.
  • Then enable an offered 2 Step Verification method and complete its setup. Prefer an authenticator when suitable.
  • Finally review any login approval request and deny one you did not initiate.

Why it matters: These Roblox account security settings require a verified email. Never share codes, even with someone claiming to provide support. Keep independent recovery methods available.

Save recovery codes

Backup codes provide a recovery method if an authentication device is lost.

  • Open Settings, then Security and the recovery codes section.
  • Then select Generate, verify your password and store the codes privately away from the gaming device.

Why it matters: Each code is for one use. Generating a new set replaces the previous set. Store them where the child cannot accidentally send them to another player.

Add a passkey on a private device

A passkey uses a device’s secure sign in method.

  • Open Settings, then Account Info and Login Methods.
  • Then select Add Passkey and complete the device verification.
  • Finally use the passkey management options to remove a method on a lost or shared device.

Why it matters: Only add a passkey to a device you control. Passkey sign ins use strong authentication and can bypass a separate two step code.

Consider Enhanced Protection after arranging recovery

Enhanced Protection requires stronger authentication and can affect device compatibility.

  • Create a passkey and verify your recovery details first.
  • Then open Settings and Security. Select Enhanced Protection, then Turn on and complete the challenge.

Why it matters: Check the official compatibility and recovery guidance before enabling it. Losing every supported verification method can lock you out. This setting does not make chat safer.

Roblox account security and active sessions

Session management shows devices signed into the account.

  • Open Settings and Security.
  • Then find Where you’re logged in. Select Log Out of Session for an unwanted login or Log Out of All Other Sessions.

Why it matters: Locations are approximate. An unfamiliar session warrants checking, but a location alone does not prove an intrusion. Change exposed passwords and secure the recovery email.

Roblox safety settings for blocking players

Blocking restricts direct contact and removes the player as a friend.

  • Open the player’s profile. Select the three dot menu and Block User.
  • For an eligible linked child, open the parent dashboard’s Friends, choose Manage and use the player’s three dot menu to Block. Confirm.

Why it matters: Roblox safety settings cannot erase messages or guarantee that a blocked person never appears in a shared game. They may also create another account.

Report a player, game or message with context

A report should identify the actual conduct rather than only an account name.

  • Inside a game, open the menu and Report. Select the person, a reason and the relevant details, then Submit.
  • For harmful game content, choose the game reporting option. Outside play, use the game’s Report Abuse link.
  • For chat, open its details or three dot menu and choose Report or Report Abuse.

Why it matters: Reporting and blocking have different purposes. Explain what happened and where it happened. Reporting does not provide immediate emergency support.

Recover a lost or compromised account

Recovery should begin with official Roblox tools.

  • On the login page, select Forgot Password or Username? and use the verified recovery method.
  • If you suspect a compromise, secure your email, check devices and extensions, change the password and revoke unwanted sessions.
  • Contact official Roblox Support if recovery fails.

Why it matters: Use official Roblox account security and recovery routes. Avoid paid recovery services. Roblox support cannot promise every lost item or payment will be restored.

Remove saved payment methods

Removing a saved card reduces easy repeat purchases.

  • Open Settings and the Payment Methods tab where Roblox stored the payment.
  • Delete an unwanted saved method.
  • Separately remove or restrict payment methods with Apple, Google, Xbox or another billing provider used by the child.

Why it matters: Removing a card through Roblox payment safety settings does not cancel subscriptions or refund past purchases. A gift balance can still be spent.

Cancel recurring subscriptions with the correct provider

Game subscriptions and memberships can renew separately.

  • For a directly billed game subscription, open Settings and Subscriptions. Select the subscription arrow and Cancel Renewal.
  • Then complete the confirmation. For store billed memberships, cancel through that store’s subscription management.
  • Finally review private server renewals and every membership receipt separately.

Why it matters: Cancel in time for the provider’s renewal deadline. Uninstalling Roblox and deleting an account do not reliably cancel billing. Cancellation is not an automatic refund.

Request account data before closing an account

A data request is separate from downloading every game or conversation.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy and Account data, deactivation & deletion.
  • Then select Request Account Data, then Request. Use the verified email to access the report.

Why it matters: The documented report link expires after seven days. Store downloaded information privately, especially when it contains information about a child.

Choose deactivation or deletion carefully

Deactivation and permanent deletion have different consequences.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy and Account data, deactivation & deletion.
  • Then choose Deactivate for temporary closure or Delete for the permanent process. Read the warning and complete verification.
  • Finally cancel recurring billing with each provider before relying on account closure.

Why it matters: Signing in can reactivate a deactivated account. Some content may remain visible, and deleting an account is not the same as deleting every copy held by other users.

How to Use Roblox Safely

Review Roblox safety settings together before approving a new game. Ask your child who can join, whether strangers can speak and what purchases appear during play. For example, a quiet building game and a public role play game may need different permissions.

Review Roblox parental controls and trusted contacts after birthdays, updates and account changes. Keep the parent’s email, password and recovery methods private. Device controls can add bedtime limits and restrict camera, microphone and contact permissions.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

Roblox safety settings support a wider conversation about bullying, image sharing and invitations to private conversations. A friendly player may still be a stranger. Children should know they can leave, block someone and ask for help without losing your support.

Treat free currency, account upgrades, giveaways and unofficial downloads cautiously. Never give another player a password, recovery code or payment information. Similarly, keep names, school details, addresses and private family conversations out of profiles, screenshots and chat.

If a child receives threats or sexual requests, stop contact and seek appropriate safeguarding help. Preserve usernames, dates and ordinary messages where safe. Do not copy or forward sexual images of children. In immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. A child can contact Childline for support. Report suspected child sexual abuse material through Hotline.ie.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

Roblox safety settings depend on age, region and account eligibility. Roblox’s current documentation contains conflicting age statements. Use the dedicated maturity and age transition guidance alongside the options actually shown in your account.

There is no single parent switch established here for every custom chat system, AI character, camera feature or external contact channel. Limit game access when a feature cannot be reviewed. Meta Quest, console parties, device permissions and store billing require their own settings.

Roblox Safety Settings Checklist

  • Confirm the child’s real birth date and your linked parent account.
  • Review maturity, allowed games, sensitive issues and blocked games.
  • Check game chat, direct chat, friend chat, Party and private servers.
  • Set eligible time and spending controls, then inspect their exclusions.
  • Secure login and recovery methods. Practise blocking and reporting together.
  • Review subscriptions, device permissions and changes as the child gets older.

Roblox Safety Settings Questions

Can a content label guarantee suitable play?

No. Labels describe content categories, while live interactions and developer changes can introduce other concerns. Review the game and talk about how to leave uncomfortable situations.

Does a monthly spending cap block every purchase?

No. Existing Robux, gift card redemption and some provider billing sit outside the documented cap. Check platform payments and subscriptions separately.

Do parents keep the same controls throughout childhood?

No. Authority and available settings change as young people get older. Review the age transition guidance before a birthday and check the account again afterwards.
