Netflix is a subscription service for watching films, series, documentaries and some live programmes through the internet. Selected titles can also be downloaded to compatible devices. Children may enjoy familiar stories and characters, while teenagers may follow shared favourites or explore new interests. However, its wider catalogue includes adult content. Netflix safety settings help parents shape each child’s viewing experience.
This guide explains Netflix safety settings for parents and young viewers. Together, create a suitable profile, protect the adult profiles and test the controls on every screen. It separates content restrictions from account security, privacy and practical viewing routines. A child profile belongs within the adult’s account, rather than acting as an independent child account.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Netflix requires the account holder to be at least 18, or the local age of majority. Younger viewers use the service under an adult’s supervision. In contrast, a film’s maturity rating describes that title’s content. Neither an app store rating nor a subscription makes the whole catalogue suitable for children.
Choose a rating for your child’s needs and review individual titles together. Regional classifications can differ, and live programmes may include material you did not expect. Account verification by password or a security code establishes account access. It does not establish that every viewer is a child or that a programme will suit them. Therefore, choose Netflix safety settings around your child’s individual needs.
Parental Controls and Content Restrictions
Netflix parental controls work profile by profile. First, choose the child’s space and content level. Then protect the routes to a less restricted profile.
Start parental controls with a Netflix Kids profile
A separate profile keeps a child’s recommendations and restrictions together. The Kids experience also limits direct account settings access.
- Open Netflix in a browser and go to Manage Profiles.
- Select Add Profile, enter a name and choose For Kids. Device wording may instead show Kids Profile or Kid?.
- Select Continue. On mobile, reach this through My Netflix, the profile name and Manage Profiles.
Why it matters: This gives a child a suitable starting space. However, the main account profile cannot become a Kids profile. Protect the other profiles as well.
Set Netflix viewing restrictions
Choose the highest classification that this profile can see.
- Open Account in a browser, select Profiles and then Adjust parental controls.
- Choose the child’s profile and verify with the requested password or security code.
- Choose its Maturity Rating and select Save. Use a browser for Kids profile changes.
Why it matters: This narrows available titles and also affects game ratings. However, it does not replace checking a programme’s themes with your child.
Use parental controls to block programmes
Remove particular shows or films even when their rating is within the profile’s limit.
- Open Account, then Profiles and Adjust parental controls.
- Choose the profile and complete account verification.
- Under Title Restrictions, search for the programme, select it and choose Save.
- Switch to another profile and back to refresh the device.
Why it matters: This helps you respond to a particular concern. Restrictions belong to that profile. Another unlocked profile may still show the title.
Set adult profile locks
A profile PIN reduces casual switching to unrestricted viewing. It also protects downloaded playback from the locked profile.
- Open Account in a browser, select Profiles and choose an adult profile.
- Select Profile Lock and Create a Profile Lock.
- Enter four numbers and select Save PIN. Complete verification if Netflix requests it.
- Repeat for every profile with a higher content limit and refresh each viewing device.
Why it matters: Otherwise, a child can simply choose an adult profile. Some older devices do not support these PINs, so test the actual television. Keep passwords and recovery access with the adult.
Use parental controls for new profiles
The main profile has a separate protection against creating a fresh unrestricted profile.
- First, add a Profile Lock PIN to the main profile.
- Open Account, select Profiles, choose the main profile and open Profile Lock.
- Complete the requested account verification.
- Tick Require PIN to add new profiles and select Save PIN.
Why it matters: This closes a common route around content limits. However, someone who controls the account password or recovery messages can alter protections.
Turn off preview autoplay
Previews can start while a viewer browses. This control applies separately to each profile.
- Open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile and open Playback settings.
- Turn Autoplay previews off, then refresh the viewing device if needed.
- Alternatively, open My Netflix, the profile name and Manage Profiles in the mobile app. Choose the profile and turn Autoplay Previews off. On iPhone or iPad, tap Done.
Why it matters: This reduces unexpected preview playback. It does not block the programme itself, and some devices do not support preview autoplay.
Turn off the next episode autoplay
Give your child a deliberate stopping point between episodes.
- Open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile and open Playback settings.
- Turn Autoplay Next Episode off and refresh the device if the change has not appeared.
- On mobile, use My Netflix, the profile name and Manage Profiles. Choose the profile and turn Autoplay Next Episode off. Tap Done on iPhone or iPad.
Why it matters: A pause makes it easier to follow a family agreement. However, your child can still start another episode manually. This is not an enforced time limit.
Netflix Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Review viewing activity together
Account owners can see a profile’s watched titles and download its list.
- Open Account in a browser, select Profiles and choose the profile.
- Open Viewing activity. Select Show More if the list is short.
- Choose Download all at the bottom if you need a copy.
Why it matters: Use the list to start a calm conversation. It records profile activity rather than proving who watched. It cannot show viewing through other services.
Understand hiding viewing history
Adult profiles can remove entries from their viewing list and recommendations.
- Open Account, select Profiles, choose the profile and open Viewing activity.
- Select the hide icon beside a title. For a whole list, choose Hide all and confirm.
- An episode can also offer an option to hide its series.
Why it matters: Hidden entries can take up to 24 hours to disappear. Hiding is unavailable when the history page is reached from a Kids profile. It does not block a title or erase all retained account data.
Control automatic downloads
For example, automatic downloads can keep adding viewing choices to a phone or tablet.
- Open My Netflix, tap the profile name, then App Settings.
- Under Downloads, open Smart Downloads.
- Turn Download Next Episode off if you do not want watched episodes replaced automatically.
- Turn Downloads for You off if you do not want recommended titles downloaded automatically. If enabled, adjust each profile’s storage allowance.
Why it matters: These are separate choices from autoplay. They need compatible mobile apps and Wi Fi, and are unavailable on plans with ads. Neither replaces content restrictions.
Check and remove downloaded content
Inspect offline viewing on every shared device, particularly before handing a device to a child.
- Open Downloads, choose a programme and tap its download status icon. Select Delete Download to remove it.
- For all local downloads, open My Netflix, the profile name, App Settings and Delete All Downloads. Confirm Delete.
- For a lost device, open Manage download devices in a browser and select Remove device.
Why it matters: Downloads stay on the device that holds them. Netflix permits access from profiles while applying viewing restrictions and profile locks. Therefore, test offline playback and remove unsuitable downloads rather than assuming a profile change hides everything.
Review Netflix privacy settings
Privacy choices vary by eligibility and region. Advertising opt outs do not remove every advertisement.
- Open Account in a browser, select Profiles, choose the relevant profile and open Privacy and data settings.
- Review Matched Identifier Communications to control matching contact identifiers for external marketing.
- Where offered, turn off Behavioral Advertising for advertising based on activity elsewhere and Demographic Advertising for demographic targeting.
- Review User Consent Purposes and Legitimate Interest Purposes. Open Manage partners and purposes, or choose Turn Off Partner Settings to turn both partner settings off together.
Why it matters: These choices reduce specified marketing uses, rather than stopping all service data collection. Netflix does not use behavioural advertising in Kids profiles. Separately, review cookie choices and device advertising controls.
Review privacy settings for email and reports
Adult profiles can choose marketing categories and receive a Kids activity report when a Kids profile is active.
- Sign in to the adult profile in a browser. Open Account, Profiles, the profile and Notification settings.
- Select Manage Emails and change the categories you want.
- Review Kids Activity Report, or choose Unsubscribe from All for optional emails.
- Review push notifications under Notification settings or the device’s notification controls.
Why it matters: Reports can support family discussions but are not continuous supervision. Security, billing and other essential account messages cannot all be disabled.
Protect account recovery and profile locks
Use an adult controlled email address and a unique password. A profile PIN is different from account authentication.
- Use Change password while signed in through an adult profile.
- For recovery, open Netflix sign in help, choose Email, enter the account email and select Email Me.
- Follow the genuine reset email, enter the new password twice and leave Sign out all devices selected before Save.
- Check contact information in Account under Security.
Why it matters: Someone with recovery access can undo parental choices. Secure that email account with its own multifactor authentication. Netflix’s verification codes are not proof of a viewer’s age.
Sign out unfamiliar devices
For example, review sessions after using a hotel, holiday rental or shared television.
- Open Manage Access and Devices.
- Expand the device’s arrow and choose Sign Out.
- For a wider concern, choose Sign Out of All Devices at the bottom and confirm Sign Out. Change a compromised password as well.
Why it matters: The list can take up to 48 hours to update and excludes some devices, including activity limited to games. Therefore, an empty list is not proof that nobody else has access.
Use privacy settings and request account information
The account owner can request the personal information Netflix holds.
- Open Get my information while signed in.
- Follow the verification and request instructions, then keep the download private.
- A profile user with a linked email can instead contact Netflix privacy support.
Why it matters: The file can contain family viewing and account information. Requests may take up to 30 days after verification. A profile request can notify the account owner.
Cancel billing or delete the account
Cancellation and permanent deletion have different effects.
- For direct billing, open Manage your membership, choose Cancel and then Finish Cancellation.
- Check the confirmation and end date. If another company bills you, follow that provider’s cancellation route.
- For deletion, open Account, then Security and Delete account.
- Complete the Security Check, tick the confirmation and choose Permanently Delete only when you intend to remove the account.
Why it matters: Deleting the app does not stop billing. Cancellation normally retains account information for a period, while permanent deletion removes access to activity and preferences. Save anything you need first.
Review privacy settings for profile transfers
Profile transfers can copy recommendations, history and other profile information to another account.
- Open Netflix’s profile transfer instructions in a browser.
- Follow the Turn off profile transfers link while signed in.
- Select Turn Off Profile Transfer.
Why it matters: This stops future outgoing transfers. It does not undo an earlier transfer or prevent transfers into the account. Kids profiles and protected profiles have additional eligibility restrictions.
Review test participation
For example, netflix can test changes to its interface and features.
- Open Account in a browser.
- Open Test participation in the account settings, where offered.
- Turn participation off if you prefer not to join those tests.
Why it matters: This concerns service experiments rather than content filtering. It does not freeze the app or prevent ordinary updates. The control’s availability can vary.
How to Use Netflix Safely
Use Netflix safety settings alongside programmes you have checked, rather than leaving recommendations to make every choice. For example, read a title’s rating and description with your child, then discuss any violence, sexual themes or frightening scenes. Let them stop without having to finish an episode.
Next, agree viewing times and keep sleep routines in mind. Netflix’s documented parental controls do not provide a daily enforced viewing allowance. Use the device’s family controls where suitable, and test whether their limit actually blocks the app. Turning off autoplay only creates a pause.
Finally, update Netflix and the device software. Check microphones, voice assistant access and device privacy separately if the television supports them. If a live event or game offers chat, voting or other interactive features, check its additional rules and controls before a child joins. Viewing restrictions do not replace that review.
Add a device viewing allowance
Netflix safety settings do not include an enforced daily allowance. On a child’s iPhone, add an extra device limit.
- For version 27 family controls, open the parent’s Settings, then Family and the child’s name.
- Choose Time Allowances, then Add. Adjust the entertainment category and check where Netflix is assigned.
- Open Screen Time Schedule, enable Schedule and choose Add Schedule. Set the days and allowed app categories.
- On older software, follow that version’s App Limits and Downtime instructions instead.
Why it matters: Current family controls require compatible updated devices. Keep parental settings protected and test Always Allowed exceptions. However, these limits do not automatically cover a shared television or another account.
Parental Controls, Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Netflix safety settings cannot identify fraudulent messages for you. Watch for fake payment notices, password reset messages and unofficial support phone numbers. Instead, open the genuine app or Help Centre yourself. Do not share passwords, payment details or security codes with someone claiming they must check your account.
Watching a catalogue film is different from chatting with strangers. However, interactive features, games and discussions in separate social apps can introduce pressure or harassment. Listen calmly, save relevant evidence and use the relevant reporting tools. For Irish support routes, visit Useful Links and Supports. In immediate danger, call 112 or 999.
Report a title or classification concern
Netflix accepts reports about inappropriate material, classifications and playback problems.
- While watching in a supported web browser, select the flag icon, choose Another Issue, describe the concern and select Send.
- Alternatively, open Account, Profiles, the profile and Viewing activity.
- Find the episode, choose Report a problem, select the available category, explain it and select Report Problem.
- For a concern the form does not cover, use Netflix support.
Why it matters: A report does not immediately remove a title. Meanwhile, block it on the child’s profile. Mobile in player reporting has plan restrictions, so use the browser route if absent.
Parental Controls Across Devices and Regions
Manage Netflix safety settings in a browser for the fullest account controls and for changing Kids profile maturity limits or blocked titles. Mobile menu labels can differ from television menus. Refresh the app after changes and test profile locks on older televisions.
Ratings, available titles, live events, advertising options and downloads differ by country, plan and device. Check your actual account rather than assuming a US feature is present in Ireland. An adult profile’s privacy setting may not appear in a Kids profile.
Account controls are included within Netflix rather than requiring a separate parental control purchase. However, watching needs an eligible subscription and automatic download features have plan restrictions. Netflix does not provide a title language or subtitle restriction that replaces maturity controls. Language and captions support comprehension, rather than making adult content suitable.
Parental Controls and Privacy Settings Checklist
After adjusting Netflix safety settings, walk through this checklist with your child. Repeat the checks when a device or viewing routine changes.
- Use an adult owned account with a separate suitable child profile.
- Set maturity limits and block unsuitable individual titles.
- Lock every adult profile and protect creation of new profiles.
- Check autoplay, automatic downloads and offline playback.
- Review privacy, notifications, recovery access and active devices.
- Agree viewing routines, test restrictions and know how to report concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child bypass Netflix profile locks?
Yes, if another profile is accessible.
Why it matters: Lock all profiles with higher limits and require a PIN for new profiles. Then test the television. Account passwords and recovery access still allow changes.
Do parental controls guarantee suitable viewing?
No. It provides a restricted catalogue and simpler interface.
Why it matters: Your child may react differently to a title than its classification suggests. In addition, another account or service falls outside these settings.
Does cancelling erase my information?
Cancellation stops renewal when correctly completed. It is different from deletion.
Why it matters: Review the confirmation and Netflix’s current retention guidance. Request deletion separately if that is your intention.
