Microsoft Bing Safety Settings

Microsoft Bing logo

Microsoft Bing is a search engine for websites, images, videos, news and other online information. Children and teenagers may encounter it through Microsoft Edge, Windows or school devices. They use it for homework, interests and everyday questions. These Bing safety settings help families review those searches together.

Bing increasingly combines traditional results with generated summaries through Copilot Search. AI can organise information quickly, but it can also provide confident mistakes. Review content filtering, privacy and cookies separately from Copilot app settings, since they control different parts of the experience.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

Bing search results do not carry one age rating that makes every linked page suitable for children. A Microsoft account may require parental consent depending on the birthday and region. Use accurate details and complete the genuine parent consent prompts rather than entering an older age.

The current personal Copilot documentation states a minimum age of 13, with higher regional requirements possible. This is separate from general Bing search and Microsoft 365 education eligibility. The country list checked did not establish an Irish Copilot threshold, so follow the account’s eligibility notice.

Child safety warning: Bing can lead to explicit material, harmful advice, scams or misinformation. AI answers and strict filtering cannot guarantee safety. If Microsoft asks an adult to verify consent, read the purpose and privacy notice on the genuine Microsoft screen. No universal Irish document or biometric method was established in this review.

Read Microsoft parental consent and Copilot young people requirements for the applicable requirements.

Restrictions Available

Review the child’s actual account and device with them. The controls below cover search, privacy and related browser protections, with their limits explained separately.

A family organizer manages a child added as a member. Both people need their own Microsoft accounts. Family group setup

  • Sign in as the parent at Microsoft Family Safety.
  • Select Add a family member.
  • Choose Member for the child, then Next.
  • Enter the child’s email address or telephone number and select Next.
  • Have the child open the invitation, sign in and accept it. Complete parental consent when requested.

Why it matters: Separate accounts attach settings to the child. However, joining a family does not automatically configure every device or protection.

Connect the child’s Windows device

Device connection allows compatible Family Safety controls to apply. The child should use a standard account. Connect family devices

  • On the child’s Windows device, open Settings, then Accounts.
  • Open Family & other people where that label appears.
  • Under Your family, select the child and Allow.
  • Have the child sign in, then confirm the device appears in Family Safety.

Why it matters: Device connection enables controls. However, Windows versions use different account screens, and administrator access can undermine enforcement.

Choose Bing SafeSearch Strict

Strict filters detected explicit text, images and videos. Moderate filters images and videos but can leave explicit text. Bing SafeSearch options

  • Open Bing settings on the child’s search route.
  • Under SafeSearch, select Strict, then Save.
  • Repeat the check in each browser and account used.

Why it matters: Strict provides stronger filtering. However, it misses some harmful material and does not control every linked website. Under 18 settings may be automatically restricted by region.

Enable Family Safety web filtering

The supported browser is currently Edge, with the child signed in. Website rules add protection after a result is clicked. Family Safety web filters

  • Sign in to Family Safety as the organizer.
  • Open the child’s menu and select Go to overview, then Edge.
  • Turn on Filter inappropriate websites and searches.
  • Add website addresses under Blocked Sites or Allowed sites.

Why it matters: Filtering reduces mature website access. However, it depends on supported signed in browsing. Unblocking unsupported browsers provides another route around protection.

Use only an approved set of websites

A small allowed collection can suit younger children better than the wider web. Family Safety web filters

  • In Family Safety, open the child’s overview and select Edge.
  • Keep filtering on and turn on Only use allowed websites.
  • Add chosen sites under Allowed sites.
  • Review Always allow educational websites separately before enabling it.

Why it matters: An allowed set narrows access. However, an educational classification is not a guarantee about all material on a website. Check homework links together.

Set device time and bedtime access

Device schedules can support breaks and sleep on connected supported devices. Family device time limits

  • Sign in as organizer to Family Safety.
  • Select the child’s tile and the Windows, Xbox or Mobile tab.
  • Select Turn limits on if needed.
  • Choose a day, set allowed time ranges and total time, then select Finished.
  • Apply the schedule to the other intended days.

Why it matters: Schedules can enforce supported device access periods. However, Mobile limits apply to Android, and a different device may remain available.

Limit search and AI apps separately

An app allowance does not automatically time limit its website equivalent. App limits and website equivalents

  • Open Family Safety, choose the child and their platform.
  • Select Apps, features, and games, then turn on App and game limits.
  • Select the search, browser or Copilot app and set the daily time and permitted hours.
  • Under Block related websites, select listed website equivalents when appropriate.
  • Use the Edge website rules above to block Copilot website access if needed.

Why it matters: App limits can reduce prolonged use. However, website limits are separate and only listed related sites can be selected through this route.

Review activity reporting openly

Reporting can show supported Bing search terms and websites. Explain the monitoring to the child. Family activity reporting

  • Open Family Safety as organizer and select the child.
  • Open Web safety and turn Activity reporting on if you intend to monitor it.
  • Review Windows, Xbox and Mobile reporting separately.
  • Confirm a device is connected, then review the reported activity together.

Why it matters: Reports can begin a useful conversation. However, they cover supported signed in browsing and are not a complete record of every account or private conversation.

Stop saving new searches and clear history

Stopping new saving and deleting existing activity are different choices. Bing history controls

  • On Bing, open More, then History.
  • In the history pane, open More options, then Open history page.
  • Turn Show new searches here off.
  • When signed out, use Manage or clear your search history, then Clear all to remove this device’s record.
  • For a personal signed in account, open Microsoft privacy dashboard, select Browsing and search and Clear all activities under Search history.

Why it matters: Less retention reduces visible history. However, stopping new saving leaves old entries, browser history is separate, and work or school accounts use their own history route.

Turn off typing suggestions

Suggestions can introduce unwanted topics before a search is completed. Bing suggestion settings

  • Open Bing settings.
  • Under Search, clear See search suggestions as you type.

Why it matters: Fewer prompts can reduce unwanted suggestions. However, clearing cookies can restore them, and this choice does not block deliberate searches.

Necessary cookies can retain sessions or preferences. Optional cookies may support measurement or advertising. Edge cookies

  • At a Bing consent banner, review the purposes and reject optional cookies where the choice is offered.
  • In Edge for computer, open Settings and more, Settings, then Privacy, search, and services.
  • Select Cookies and turn on Block third-party cookies.
  • For a specific site, use Not allowed to save and read cookies, then Add site and its address.

Why it matters: Blocking can reduce some tracking. However, sites may break, necessary storage remains, and account history is managed separately.

Clear saved cookies and site data

Deleting browser site data can sign a child out and reset local search preferences. Edge cookies

  • In Edge, open Settings and more, Settings, then Privacy, search, and services.
  • Select Cookies, then See all cookies and site data.
  • Find Bing, expand its entry and select Delete.
  • For regular clearing, use Clear browsing data, Choose what to clear every time you close the browser and turn on Cookies and other site data.
  • Recheck signed in filtering and search suggestions after clearing.

Why it matters: Clearing reduces local storage. However, it does not erase Microsoft account history, and signed out filtering preferences may reset.

Enable tracking prevention

Edge offers Basic, Balanced and Strict tracking prevention. Edge tracking prevention

  • Open Settings and more, Settings, then Privacy, search, and services.
  • Select Tracking prevention and turn it On.
  • Choose Balanced or Strict after checking important sites still work.
  • Review Exceptions and avoid broad exemptions.

Why it matters: Strict blocks more trackers. However, it can break website functions and does not make browsing anonymous.

Reduce Edge browsing personalisation

This browser choice can affect Bing, advertising and news recommendations. It differs from account advertising consent. Edge personalisation

  • In Edge, open Settings and more, Settings, then Privacy, search, and services.
  • Select Privacy.
  • Turn off the setting beginning Allow Microsoft to save your browsing activity for personalising Microsoft Edge and services.

Why it matters: Stopping future sharing reduces this use of browser activity. However, earlier data and other sources remain separate.

Review Microsoft advertising preferences

An advertising preference does not turn off every search recommendation. Microsoft advertising privacy

  • Open Microsoft privacy dashboard in the correct account.
  • Open the advertising settings and turn See ads and offers that interest you off where offered.
  • Review the separate Edge personalisation control above.

Why it matters: Less personalisation reduces targeted ads. However, contextual ads remain and the browser collection preference is separate.

Restrict precise location

Nearby searches can request precise location. Websites may still estimate a general area from an IP address. Edge location privacy

  • In Edge, open Settings, then Privacy, search, and services.
  • Select Site permissions, All permissions, then Location.
  • Turn off Ask before accessing to prevent website requests for precise location.
  • For an individual site, open its address bar information icon, Permissions for this site, then set Location to Block.

Why it matters: Reducing precise access protects location privacy. However, IP based location and operating system permissions remain separate.

Restrict camera and microphone access

Voice and image search do not require permanent access to every site. Camera and microphone permissions

  • In Edge, open Settings and more, then Settings.
  • Select Privacy, search, and services, Site Permissions, then All sites.
  • Select Bing or the relevant site and choose Block for Camera or Microphone.

Why it matters: Limits reduce unwanted device access. However, browser site permissions do not replace app and operating system checks.

Manage newer Copilot memory and shared experiences

These are updated personal Copilot app controls, rather than a Bing AI off switch. They may be unavailable for younger accounts. Updated Copilot privacy controls

  • Sign in to Microsoft Copilot, open Settings and select Personalization.
  • Turn Saved memories off. Use Manage and Delete all memories to remove earlier memories if offered.
  • Turn One shared experience off to reduce sharing between Copilot and other Microsoft experiences.
  • Turn Allow ads personalization off where available. Under 18 users do not receive personalised Copilot advertising according to Microsoft.

Why it matters: Separate choices limit different uses. However, disabling memory does not erase old memories or chat history, and these controls do not remove generated Bing answers.

Control web searching inside Copilot

Copilot’s Web search toggle controls its use of web information. It does not disable AI in Bing. Updated Copilot privacy controls

  • Sign in to the updated personal Microsoft Copilot app.
  • Open Settings, then Personalization.
  • Turn Web search off if you do not want Copilot to query the web.

Why it matters: This limits external web searching within Copilot. However, answers can become less current, and a toggle is not a locked child access control.

Export or delete Copilot conversations

Copilot app activity has a separate privacy record from Bing searches. Copilot activity history

  • Sign in to Microsoft privacy dashboard.
  • Open Privacy, Empower your productivity, Copilot, then Your Copilot app activity history and Copilot apps.
  • Choose Export all activity history for a copy, or Delete all activity history.
  • For deletion, review the confirmation and select Clear.

Why it matters: Deleting reduces the saved conversation record. However, it does not delete browser history or copies that were shared with others.

Protect account sign in

A unique password and an additional verification method protect saved search and other account data. Microsoft verification setup

  • Sign in to Microsoft account security.
  • Select Manage how I sign in.
  • Under Additional security and Two-step verification, select Turn on.
  • Complete the supported method setup and keep recovery options secure.

Why it matters: Additional verification reduces password theft risk. However, it cannot prevent harmful search results or protect a code shared with a scammer. Microsoft is phasing out SMS methods.

Download saved activity

An archive can contain private searches and needs secure storage. Activity archive guidance

  • Open Microsoft privacy dashboard.
  • Select Download your data.
  • Under Archives, select Download beside the archive you have created.
  • Save the ZIP privately and open only the data you intend to review.

Why it matters: A copy helps review existing records. However, exporting does not delete the online record, and available archive categories vary.

Report a harmful result or factual error

Search removal does not remove material from the original publisher. Bing reporting and removal

  • Open Bing reporting guidance.
  • Follow its report these to Microsoft Bing link for a concerning URL and complete the relevant form.
  • For a factual error, use Feedback at the bottom of Bing and describe the issue.
  • Keep the confirmation and approach the hosting site where safe and appropriate.

Why it matters: Reporting flags a problem for review. However, removal is limited by policy and cannot erase the source website.

Report an unsafe website through Edge

SmartScreen warnings can interrupt phishing and malicious downloads after leaving search. SmartScreen and unsafe website reports

  • Leave a site when a security warning appears.
  • To report a suspected unsafe site in Edge, open Settings and more, Help and feedback, then Report unsafe website.
  • Follow the reporting prompts without sharing unnecessary private information.

Why it matters: Reporting supports threat detection. However, new scams may escape warnings, and a site without a warning is not automatically safe.

Close an account only after reviewing the consequences

Closure affects more than Bing, including email, files and connected services. Parents should review child account eligibility. Microsoft account closure

  • Export important data, review subscriptions and replace recovery addresses used elsewhere.
  • Open Microsoft closure guidance and select Close account.
  • Verify ownership and the correct account, then select Next.
  • Read and acknowledge the consequences, choose the offered reopening period and select a reason.
  • Select Mark account for closure only if closure is intended.

Why it matters: Closure can end account use. However, data becomes unrecoverable after the reopening window and resetting verification details can delay closure.

Enforce Strict on a managed network

DNS can enforce filtering. Network SafeSearch

  • Open the router or network DNS configuration as administrator.
  • Set http://www.bing.com and edgeservices.bing.com CNAMEs to strict.bing.com.
  • Save and test searches and the Edge sidebar.

Why it matters: CNAMEs accommodate IP changes. Do not block the Bing IP. Other networks, search services or VPN routes need separate protection.

Enforce Strict on a Windows PC

An administrator can configure the hosts file. PC SafeSearch

  • Find Notepad, right click, choose Run as Administrator, then Yes.
  • Open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adapting for a different Windows installation.
  • Open Command Prompt and run ping strict.bing.com. Note its current IP address.
  • Append two hosts entries: that IP followed by http://www.bing.com, and that IP followed by edgeservices.bing.com.
  • Save and test Bing and the Edge sidebar.

Why it matters: Use the actual IP, not a CNAME or an example address. Administrators can undo this. It affects this PC, not every device or all web content.

Keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen enabled

Edge checks sites and downloads for known threats. SmartScreen settings

  • Open Edge Settings and more, then Settings.
  • Select Privacy, search, and services, then Security.
  • Turn Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on.
  • Leave a warned site and ask an adult to help.

Why it matters: This protects linked sites as well as searches, but cannot identify every new scam. A school administrator may manage the setting.

Microsoft Bing Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Content filtering reduces some explicit results, while privacy controls reduce certain records and tracking. Account security protects access to saved data. These controls address different risks and work best when combined with conversations about what a child finds.

How to Use Microsoft Bing Safely

For younger children, search together and choose a small set of trusted learning websites. For teenagers, agree when independent searching is appropriate and how to ask for help after an upsetting result. Encourage questions without blaming a child for content they encounter.

Check the publisher, date and evidence before trusting an answer. Sponsored links may lead to scams, and generated answers can cite material that does not support their claim. Avoid submitting school details, passwords, private photos or sensitive family information in a search or AI prompt.

Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns

Copilot Search combines generated summaries with links and follow up exploration. Microsoft’s Copilot Search explanation describes the experience. For children, a citation is a route to check the evidence rather than proof that a summary is correct.

Ofcom’s 2026 UK findings highlight limited questioning of AI accuracy among children. Parents can use this as a reason to practise checking original sources. These findings do not measure Bing’s accuracy or Irish children’s exposure. Ofcom children and AI findings

eSafety’s 2026 Australian research also describes children sharing sensitive information with AI assistants. This concerns broader AI use rather than Bing alone. Avoid identifying details in prompts and keep safeguarding or medical decisions with trusted adults and professionals. eSafety children and AI research

Responding to harmful content

If a search leads to grooming, sexual pressure, threats or bullying, help the child close the page and speak with a trusted adult. Keep relevant non explicit evidence when safe, report through the service and contact appropriate support. Never download or forward suspected child sexual abuse material.

In immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. For confidential support, use Childline Ireland. Report suspected illegal online content through Hotline.ie. CODA enquiries are for education and guidance rather than an emergency response.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

Family Safety website filters currently require Edge and the child’s signed in Microsoft account. An iPhone parent app does not establish that every iPhone browser is supervised. Work or school Copilot and Microsoft 365 features have separate administrator controls and data policies.

The updated personal Copilot privacy documentation applies to the newer app version introduced in August 2026. Do not apply older model training settings to it without checking the version. No universal Bing generated answer off switch or Irish child feature lock was verified. Block app and website access through supported family tools when appropriate.

Edge’s Global Privacy Control setting is currently documented as available in the USA. It signals a preference about data sale or targeted advertising and sites may not honour it. No Irish availability is claimed. Search filters are free, and paid Copilot features do not guarantee child suitability.

Safety Checklist

  • Confirm the correct account and birthday, with supervision where appropriate.
  • Keep the strongest relevant content filter enabled on each search route.
  • Review privacy, cookie consent, history and permissions separately.
  • Check AI preferences and teach the child to verify original sources.
  • Secure accounts and review shared devices where an account is used.
  • Agree breaks and a clear way to ask for help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does filtering guarantee safe results?

No. Filters can miss harmful material and do not establish that an answer is accurate. Websites opened from a result have separate risks.

Does clearing cookies delete account history?

No. Browser cookies and account activity are different records. Clearing cookies can also reset locally stored safety preferences.

Can children trust an AI answer for homework?

Treat it as a starting point to check. Open the cited sources, compare reliable information and follow the school’s rules about AI use.

Can parents read everything a child searches?

Capabilities depend on the service and supervision setup. Explain monitoring openly and do not assume a parental control provides access to all activity.
