HBO Max Safety Settings

HBO Max logo for the HBO Max safety settings guide

HBO Max brings films, series, documentaries and entertainment to connected screens. It launched directly in Ireland in March 2026, with access also available through selected partners. Children may enjoy familiar stories, while teenagers may follow shared favourites or explore new interests. However, the wider catalogue includes adult themes. HBO Max safety settings help families build a suitable viewing space within the household account.

Explore the controls together and explain why you choose a rating, a protected exit and private adult profiles. Also review privacy, playback, downloads and billing. Settings can reduce access to unsuitable material, but they cannot guarantee that every programme will suit your child. Therefore, keep conversation, supervision and an agreed viewing routine alongside the restrictions.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

A child’s profile belongs within the household account. Keep account ownership, payment and recovery under adult control. Also distinguish an app store rating from a programme’s content rating. Neither makes the whole catalogue suitable for a child.

The Irish help centre uses European Kijkwijzer age groups. A new Kids profile defaults to 9, while an Adult profile can initially watch all ratings. Therefore, review the default rather than assuming Kids Mode selects the youngest group. Content descriptors can indicate fear, violence, language, discrimination, sexual material or substances.

Review HBO Max safety settings whenever your child’s needs change. Also check the actual title rather than treating a rating as a personal recommendation.

Parental Controls and Content Restrictions

Use parental controls to create a suitable HBO Max Kids profile

HBO Max supports up to five profiles. The Irish profile guide explains Kids Mode, rating selection and the optional protected exit.

  • First, choose your profile and + New Profile. Select an avatar or Skip, then enter a profile name.
  • Turn Kids Mode on, choose the appropriate Ratings group and enable Kid-Proof Exit. Enter the birth date when requested.
  • From this screen, choose Save, then test the new profile on each device.

Why it matters: A child’s profile can narrow browsing and playback. However, website and mobile sessions may reopen the last profile used, so do not leave an adult profile open.

Choose the Irish profile rating

Irish Kids rating groups include AL for the youngest viewers, followed by 6, 9, 12, 14 and 16. Adult profile ratings can also be changed.

  • From this screen, choose your profile and Manage Profiles, then select the profile to edit.
  • Review the Ratings group, choose the level that suits your child and save with Done. On televisions, use the profile’s pencil icon. Apple TV uses Edit first.
  • Finally, test search and playback above the chosen level, including a series with differently rated episodes.

Why it matters: The rating describes broad risk rather than your child’s sensitivity. Travel can change local classifications, so check controls again when using the service elsewhere.

Set parental controls with Kid-Proof Exit

The Parent Code protects exit from Kids profiles with Kid-Proof Exit enabled. One account code applies to those profiles.

  • On a phone, tablet or computer, open play.hbomax.com/parent-code and sign in. Enter a four digit Parent Code and choose Save.
  • Next, open HBOMax.com/editprofiles, choose the child’s profile, turn on Kid-Proof Exit and choose Done.
  • For a forgotten code, choose Forgot Code? when prompted and use the account password. To reset the code, return to the Parent Code page and save a new one.

Why it matters: An exit code prevents easy profile switching, but anyone with recovery access may reset it. Therefore, keep the account password and email private.

Protect profiles with a separate Profile PIN

The Irish help centre describes a four digit Profile PIN for entry to a profile. This differs from the account’s Parent Code.

  • From this screen, choose your profile, then Manage Profiles and the profile to protect.
  • Select Lock Profile, enter the account password if requested, choose Submit, create the PIN, then select Save and Done.
  • For a change, select Reset Profile PIN, confirm the password and save the replacement. If forgotten at entry, use Forgot PIN? and follow the password confirmation.
  • Protect all adult and less restricted profiles, then test entry from the child’s profile.

Why it matters: Different controls protect different routes. A child should not be able to reach an unprotected adult profile even if one Kids profile has a protected exit.

HBO Max Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Review autoplay and mobile data

The Irish settings guide distinguishes mobile App Settings from browser and television Settings.

  • On mobile, choose your profile and App Settings. Turn off Autoplay Next Episode. For WiFi only streaming, enable Stream over Wi-Fi only on Android, or disable Stream over Mobile on iOS.
  • On the web, choose your profile and Settings. On television, choose the settings gear. Review Playback and turn off Autoplay Previews and Autoplay Next Episode where shown.

Why it matters: Pauses support an agreed stopping point, while data choices reduce unwanted mobile use. However, neither creates an enforced daily time allowance.

Review downloads before sharing a device

Eligible Irish plans support mobile downloads. Kids profiles can watch downloads made by their own profile, while Adult profiles can see downloads for profiles on that device.

  • Next, use the title’s download arrow where offered. Then review the Downloads area on the mobile device.
  • To remove a title, choose its completed download icon and Delete Download. For series, choose the series, Edit and the X beside episodes.
  • To renew expired material, choose its expiry icon and Renew Download while connected.

Why it matters: Remote device sign out does not delete downloaded files. Unwatched downloads usually expire after 30 days, and started downloads after 48 hours. Test offline restrictions after changes.

Manage download settings

The mobile settings include download connection and quality choices.

  • From this screen, choose your profile, App Settings and Download Settings.
  • Review Download Over Wi-Fi Only, Video Quality and Manage Downloads.

Why it matters: These choices can reduce mobile data and storage use. They do not make unsuitable content appropriate.

Check devices and unwanted account use

Only Adult profiles can manage the account’s signed in devices.

  • On a phone, tablet or computer, choose your profile, Account and Devices. Review the profile, sign in date and country.
  • Select the X beside a device to sign it out, or choose Sign Out All Devices for broader unwanted access.
  • For the current session, choose your profile and Sign Out. On television, use the settings gear and Sign Out.

Why it matters: Someone already streaming may remain signed in until their programme ends. Therefore, recover the account and change the password too if access is unfamiliar.

Protect and update the account

A private password and a secure recovery email protect changes to the viewing controls.

  • From this screen, choose your profile, Account and the edit icon beside Password. Enter the current password, set the new one and choose Save. The provider says this signs out all devices.
  • For an email change, use the edit icon beside Email Address, enter the replacement and choose Save. Open the email sent to the current address and select Confirm Change.
  • If the password or email is unavailable, use official recovery or contact support. To correct the account name, use the edit icon beside Name and save the change.

Why it matters: A profile PIN is not account authentication. Keep reset access private, and check genuine messages about new devices or account changes.

Review cookies, marketing and notifications

The Irish privacy help describes account privacy choices separately from content restrictions.

  • From this screen, choose your profile, Privacy & Legal and Manage Cookie Preferences. Review optional choices for each device or browser.
  • In mobile App Settings, review App Notifications and Email marketing from HBO Max. Turn off unwanted marketing. On web, use Settings for email marketing.

Why it matters: Service emails can continue after marketing is off. Privacy choices do not remove every advert, and exact consent categories still need an Irish account check.

Review billing and personal information requests

The Irish provider route distinguishes subscription management from account deletion.

  • From this screen, choose your profile and Subscription, or use the television settings gear and Subscription. Identify who bills you and manage changes with that provider.
  • For an access or deletion information request, use the Individual Rights Request form linked from HBO Max’s Irish privacy help and follow the identity checks.
  • For account deletion, first cancel the subscription and wait for expiry. Then use Privacy & Legal and Delete My Account, complete the request and confirm the provider’s email.

Why it matters: Deletion, billing cancellation and app removal are separate. Permanent deletion affects settings and viewing history, so consider its consequences before submitting a request.

How to Use HBO Max Safely

Watch a new programme together and invite your child to describe anything confusing. For example, familiar branding can sit beside adult themes in a wider catalogue. Also discuss that ratings describe broad content risks and may not capture every child’s experience.

Agree a stopping point and keep the remote available. Then revisit the limits as your child grows, and let teenagers participate in the conversation. If you need an enforced schedule, use the child’s device controls and test them separately. No universal HBO Max daily time allowance was verified.

Use HBO Max safety settings as a starting point for conversation. For example, invite your child to explain how they choose a programme and when they would ask for help.

Use accessibility and version information

Readable captions and clear audio can help a child follow what they watch. The available options vary by title and device.

  • On web or supported television apps, review Subtitle Style in Settings. If absent, check the device’s caption controls.
  • Also use Info in the app settings to record the app and device version when asking support about a missing control.

Why it matters: Accessibility supports understanding, but subtitles and audio choices do not filter programme themes.

Parental Controls, Safety Advice and Current Concerns

A safe profile needs a suitable rating, a protected exit and protected adult profiles. Nevertheless, the last used adult profile may reopen on a shared device. Therefore, check which profile is active each time a child begins watching.

For distressing content, stop playback and support the child first. Then note the title, episode, time and device, and contact the official Irish help centre about content or classification concerns. No universal individual title block or in player content report control was verified.

Also review local downloads and hardware voice or casting access. These can create routes outside the usual browsing screen. Do not assume a streaming profile controls every other app on the television.

Keep HBO Max safety settings under review after an app update. A changed menu or a new device can leave an earlier choice untested.

HBO Max Safety Settings Across Devices and Regions

This guide uses help articles that explicitly show Ireland. In particular, the Kids default is 9 and the documented European groups differ from UK or US classifications. Therefore, avoid copying another country’s labels.

Current Irish download information lists no downloads for Basic with Ads, 30 for Standard with Ads or Standard, and 100 for Premium, with additional title limits. TNT Sports availability differs by country and is not part of HBO Max in Ireland. Also configure HBO Max separately even if access comes with NOW or another partner.

Before relying on the controls, verify them inside the actual Irish account, plan and each television or mobile app. Billing partners, exact consent switches, history controls and some profile change permissions still need a device audit.

Test HBO Max safety settings on the screens your child actually uses. This helps connect the written guide to everyday viewing.

HBO Max Safety Settings Checklist

Review HBO Max safety settings together before independent viewing. Then revisit the checklist after account or device changes.

  • First, create Kids Mode and choose a suitable Irish rating group.
  • Next, enable Kid-Proof Exit and keep its Parent Code private.
  • Protect every adult profile with a Profile PIN and secure recovery access.
  • Also review autoplay, local downloads, mobile data and notifications.
  • Then check cookies, email marketing, signed in devices and billing.
  • Finally, test switching, restricted viewing and offline playback on every screen.

Frequently Asked Questions about HBO Max Safety Settings

Is a Parent Code the same as a Profile PIN?

No. The Parent Code protects leaving Kids profiles, while a Profile PIN protects entering a particular profile.

Why it matters: Use both where needed, and test every route to an adult profile.

Does signing out remotely remove downloads?

No. The Irish download help says remote sign out does not delete downloads on that device.

Why it matters: Therefore, inspect local libraries and expiry rather than relying on device removal alone.

Do NOW controls also configure HBO Max?

No. Access through a partner does not configure the separate HBO Max profiles.

Why it matters: Set up and test each service independently.
