Ecosia is a search engine that uses revenue from search advertising to support climate action. It finds websites, images and other information through search partners. Children and teenagers may use it for homework or everyday questions because their school, family or browser has chosen it. This Ecosia safety settings guide helps parents review that use.
Alongside web links, Ecosia now offers generated overviews and conversational AI. However, its environmental purpose does not make every result or answer suitable for a child. Check content filters, privacy preferences and AI choices together.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Ecosia is a general search service rather than a dedicated search environment for young children. Ordinary web search does not require an account. However, account features and AI deserve separate consideration, particularly before sharing schoolwork or personal files.
No parent linked child profile, age assurance setting or parental approval workflow was established in the reviewed documentation. Therefore, do not equate a filter or an app store age rating with child suitability. Search with younger children and check applicable account terms before signing up.
Read Ecosia search settings help and Ecosia privacy policy for the applicable requirements.
Restrictions Available
Start with filtering, then review privacy and any AI features. The instructions identify settings that families can change and explain fixed protections separately. However, ordinary preferences do not create a parental password lock.
Choose Strict Safe Search
Safe Search reduces explicit results. Ecosia settings instructions
- Open Ecosia settings or the homepage profile icon, then Settings.
- Set Safe Search to Strict where adjustable.
- Select Save.
Why it matters: Strict is strongest. However, filtering can miss content. Where the option is absent, Ecosia says regional Strict filtering applies automatically.
Enforce Strict using network DNS
A network administrator can enforce Strict. Ecosia enforced Safe Search help
- Open the internal DNS management interface used by the child’s device.
- Create or edit a CNAME for http://www.ecosia.org pointing to strict-safe-search.ecosia.org.
- Save the record, allow propagation and refresh endpoint DNS caches as needed.
- Test searches on connected devices. Use this hostname as a DNS override, not a browser homepage.
Why it matters: This is stronger than a preference. However, other networks, DNS services, VPNs and search engines can bypass it. Test IPv4 and IPv6.
Use the alternative DNS records only when needed
Ecosia recommends CNAME rather than fixed addresses. Ecosia enforced Safe Search help
- If CNAME cannot be used, ask the administrator to configure an A record for http://www.ecosia.org to 77.73.113.2.
- For IPv6, configure its AAAA record to 2a14:71c0::1.
- Save and test. Use the update notification form linked from the official enforcement help.
Why it matters: Addresses can change. Therefore, prefer the CNAME route and retain the official update instructions.
Activate the desktop AI free option
This removes AI navigation, overviews and automatic routing. Ecosia generative AI help
- Open Ecosia settings.
- Tick AI-free searching.
- Select Save.
Why it matters: It reduces automatic AI exposure. However, it is currently a desktop option and does not block separate AI websites.
Disable Overviews where available
Generated summaries can appear above links. Ecosia generative AI help
- Open Ecosia Settings.
- Clear AI Overviews where shown, then Save.
Why it matters: However, this does not disable separate AI Chat. Availability differs by region.
Stop automatic routing into AI Chat
Some queries can open AI Chat automatically. Ecosia generative AI help
- When routing first occurs, use the displayed option to disable it.
- Alternatively, activate desktop AI-free searching and Save.
Why it matters: However, a verified mobile settings route was not established.
Disable saved AI Chat history
Saving conversations is optional. Ecosia generative AI help
- Open AI Chat settings and turn off Chat history.
- Review the deletion consequence before confirming.
Why it matters: This deletes previously saved history and stops new saving. However, browser local storage is separate.
Keep private files out of AI Chat
Uploads can expose school or family information. Ecosia generative AI help
- Before uploading, remove sensitive details or avoid the upload.
- Request conversation access or deletion through privacy@ecosia.org when needed.
Why it matters: Files are deleted within seven days. However, prompts still need processing and this is not a child protection guarantee.
Turn off Auto suggestions
In addition, suggestions can distract a child from the intended question. Ecosia settings
- Open Ecosia Settings.
- Clear Auto suggestions, then Save.
Why it matters: This changes suggestions, not the search filter. Therefore, retain Strict separately.
Turn off Notifications
Notifications can encourage repeated visits. Ecosia settings
- Open Ecosia Settings.
- Clear Notifications, then Save.
Why it matters: This reduces interruptions. However, browser permissions and app notifications need separate review.
Check region and provider preferences
The result provider can affect privacy and availability. Ecosia result provider help
- Open Ecosia Settings and review Search region.
- Check Preferred search provider if offered after cookie choices.
- Choose the intended available provider, then Save and recheck filtering.
Why it matters: A region is not a precise location permission. Similarly, choosing a provider does not establish content accuracy or suitability.
Reject optional cookies and review partners
Consent choices govern optional processing. Ecosia privacy policy
- Open Cookie preferences at the bottom of Ecosia settings.
- Choose Reject non-essential, or open Manage cookies for individual choices.
- Review analytics, marketing, personalisation and search partner purposes, then save the consent choices.
Why it matters: Necessary cookies remain. However, rejecting optional consent does not stop query and IP processing required to supply results. Partners have separate policies.
Recheck locally saved preferences
Ecosia stores website settings in browser cookies. Ecosia settings help
- After clearing cookies or opening a different browser, open Ecosia Settings.
- Restore Strict and agreed AI choices, then Save.
Why it matters: Signing in does not sync these settings across browsers. Therefore, review each separately, including private windows.
Use private browsing with its limits understood
Private windows reduce records left on that device. Ecosia private browsing help
- In Ecosia’s desktop browser, open its menu and a new Incognito window.
- On Android, open the app menu and New Incognito tab.
- On iOS, open the tabs button and select Private or the private browsing symbol.
- Check filtering again, then close all private tabs when finished.
Why it matters: However, private browsing does not hide an IP address from services or protect against scams. Downloads and records outside that session may remain.
Secure an optional account
For parents, account access can expose saved features. Ecosia account help
- For an email and password account, use the login page’s Forgot password? link if recovery is needed.
- Enter the account email, open the official reset message and set a unique password.
- For Google or Apple login, secure that identity provider separately.
Why it matters: Email verification does not establish age. However, no separate Ecosia multifactor setting was verified, so do not assume one exists.
Delete an optional Ecosia account
Deletion removes account data and collectibles. Ecosia account help
- Sign in and open profile settings.
- Select Data and Privacy, then delete account.
- Read and confirm the intended deletion. Unsubscribe separately from newsletters if needed.
Why it matters: This is broader than clearing cookies. However, browser records and data held by search partners need separate handling.
Request access to or deletion of personal data
A privacy request concerns Ecosia’s own processing. Ecosia GDPR request instructions
- Write to privacy@ecosia.org stating the relevant access, correction or deletion request.
- Identify the account if applicable and describe the request without excess sensitive details.
- Complete any necessary identity verification through the official process.
Why it matters: Verification protects against unauthorised requests. However, Ecosia cannot delete another company’s records. Its guidance says IP and usage data are anonymised within seven days, while partners may retain data longer.
Report a harmful result or misleading advertisement
The responsible provider handles removal. Ecosia content and advertisement reporting
- Open the three dots beside the result or advertisement.
- Identify the provider and open its reporting route.
- Describe the concern with the relevant URL and submit through that provider’s form.
- For image results, use the Bing reporting route linked from Ecosia’s official reporting help.
Why it matters: Reporting is separate from deleting the source website. Therefore, contact its owner where appropriate and avoid forwarding explicit images.
Report a harmful AI answer
Feedback helps investigate generated content. Ecosia AI feedback help
- Use the feedback control beside the AI answer.
- Describe the error without including private details.
- Check an original source rather than relying on the answer while waiting.
Why it matters: However, feedback does not guarantee immediate correction or provide an emergency response.
Ecosia Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Filtering, privacy and AI choices address different risks. For example, a private search can still return inaccurate information or a scam. Review the strongest available filter alongside the child’s browsing habits and explain how to ask for help.
How to Use Ecosia Safely
For younger children, search together and choose a small set of trusted learning websites. For teenagers, agree when independent searching is appropriate and how to ask for help after an upsetting result. Encourage questions without blaming a child for content they encounter.
Check the publisher, date and evidence before trusting an answer. Sponsored links may lead to scams, and generated answers can cite material that does not support their claim. Avoid submitting school details, passwords, private photos or sensitive family information in a search or AI prompt.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Ecosia safety settings now need to account for generated answers as well as ordinary results. For teenagers, a summary can be useful for orientation, but it should lead to checking the source rather than copying an unverified answer. For younger children, review the answer together.
AI Chat is listed for Ireland, while the current AI Overviews country list does not include Ireland. However, rollouts and visible options can change. Do not assume absent overviews mean all AI features are absent. Ecosia AI availability help
Ofcom’s 2026 UK research highlights young people’s trust in AI generated information. Ofcom children and AI research These findings concern broader AI use rather than this engine’s error rate or Irish children specifically.
For parents, the practical concern is that a fluent answer may discourage a child from checking evidence. Younger children may need help recognising an answer as generated. Similarly, teenagers should verify claims before using them in homework. These are CODA’s practical implications, rather than measured outcomes for this service.
Responding to harmful content
If a search leads to grooming, sexual pressure, threats or bullying, help the child close the page and speak with a trusted adult. Keep relevant non explicit evidence when safe, report through the service and contact appropriate support. Never download or forward suspected child sexual abuse material.
In immediate danger in Ireland, call 112 or 999. For confidential support, use Childline Ireland. Report suspected illegal online content through Hotline.ie. CODA enquiries are for education and guidance rather than an emergency response.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
These instructions distinguish website controls from browser or mobile app controls. However, menus and feature availability may differ by country or device. Check the child’s actual screen before assuming that an option is available.
After clearing cookies or changing browsers, review the search settings again. Similarly, check links opened through school apps, voice assistants and browser address bars. A chosen homepage does not enforce use of one search engine.
Safety Checklist
- Check the strongest available filter on each browser and device.
- Review cookies, location and search history separately.
- Check AI features and open original sources before trusting an answer.
- Avoid entering personal details into searches or AI prompts.
- Discuss sponsored results and the risks of destination websites.
- Agree supervision, breaks and a way to report upsetting content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does filtering guarantee safe results?
No. Filters may miss harmful content, and websites can change after a result is indexed. Therefore, combine filtering with supervision and reporting.
Does clearing cookies remove browser history?
No. Cookies, browser history and any saved AI conversations are different records. In addition, deleting site data can reset safety preferences.
Is a private search engine automatically suitable for children?
No. Privacy reduces certain data collection, while suitability depends on content, features and the child’s needs. For younger children, search together.
Can AI answers replace checking sources?
No. AI can explain a topic but can also produce plausible mistakes. Instead, open the cited pages and compare reliable evidence.
