BBC iPlayer Safety Settings

BBC iPlayer logo

BBC iPlayer streams BBC television, films, documentaries and live channels. Children may enjoy CBeebies and CBBC, while teenagers may follow drama, comedy and sport. This guide explains BBC iPlayer safety settings for parents using eligible UK accounts and devices.

BBC iPlayer is restricted to UK residents and is not a television streaming service for Republic of Ireland residents. However, families in Northern Ireland and eligible UK families travelling abroad may find these controls relevant. Check eligibility before setting up viewing.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning

The UK Apple listing displays 13+. This app classification differs from programme suitability and BBC account requirements. An adult can create an under 13 child profile within iPlayer. A child account is different, with its own credentials and access to other BBC services.

A child profile offers a children’s catalogue and an age tailored homepage. However, the homepage is not a guarantee that every accessible family programme suits a younger child. Read programme descriptions and warnings.

The G guidance symbol flags particular concerns. A parental PIN restricts guidance labelled playback but does not prove the viewer’s age. Similarly, a supplied birth date is not identity verification. Check protection on each device.

BBC iPlayer Parental Controls and Restrictions

Create a child profile

An adult must already be signed in. Child profiles are linked to that adult and are for under 13s.

  • On the website, select the blue account avatar and Add child.
  • Enter a display name and the child’s month and year of birth.
  • On mobile, select + Add Child on the account screen. From an adult profile, use the blue initial icon to open Switch user.
  • Enter the name and date of birth in the app.
  • On television, select the pink Add child icon. Enter the name and birth date, then choose the linked adult account if requested.

Why it matters: As a result, a separate profile keeps viewing apart from the adult’s experience. Nevertheless, review programmes and secure adult profile access.

Set browser guidance protection

Cookies store this browser’s protection. Another browser or device needs its own setup.

  • Open a G labelled programme and select Play.
  • When prompted, select Turn On PG Lock.
  • Choose a private four digit PIN and select Play to complete setup.
  • Alternatively, use the BBC Parental Controls page.
  • Test another guidance labelled programme in that browser.

Why it matters: For this reason, clearing cookies or changing browsers can avoid this local lock. Therefore, protect browser access as well as the PIN.

Set mobile and tablet parental controls

The current mobile app has separate playback and profile switching protection.

  • From an adult profile, open the homepage Settings cog.
  • Select Parental Controls, then Enable parental controls.
  • Enter a four digit PIN and choose a secret question and private answer.
  • Tap Activate, then select the guidance playback protection offered.
  • Test a guidance labelled programme.

Why it matters: Therefore, the app’s guidance lock also covers labelled downloads. Therefore, keep the PIN and recovery answer private.

Enable the mobile Profile switching lock

A child profile alone does not protect switching to an adult’s profile.

  • Open the adult profile’s Settings, then Parental Controls.
  • Enter the PIN.
  • Turn on Profile switching lock.
  • Switch to the child profile, then select an adult profile to confirm that a PIN is required.

Why it matters: In practice, this closes a simple mobile route to adult viewing. Do not assume an identical switching control exists on every television.

Set television parental controls

The television lock is device specific. Sky, YouView and Apple TV have separate platform instructions.

  • Open BBC iPlayer on the television.
  • Use the left menu to select Settings, then Parental controls.
  • Select Parental Controls to enter setup.
  • Create the PIN or password, select OK and confirm it.
  • Check and confirm the details, then test restricted playback.

Why it matters: As a result, mobile setup does not protect the television. In addition, check the BBC’s platform help and the device’s own controls.

Change or recover the parental PIN

After a reset, configure protection again. Recovery differs between browsers, phones and TVs.

  • On mobile, open Settings, Parental Controls and PIN Settings. Enter the PIN.
  • Select PIN and secret question, make the changes and tap Save.
  • For a forgotten PIN, choose Forgot PIN?, answer the secret question and save the replacement.
  • If the answer is forgotten, select Forgotten answer?. Follow the app’s recovery instructions. Android storage clearing or iOS reinstallation removes downloads and resets the lock.
  • On TV, choose Settings, Parental Controls and Change PIN or Password. Enter the current code, then set and confirm a replacement.
  • For browser recovery, follow the official browser instructions and create a new lock after stored browser data is cleared.

Why it matters: For this reason, recovery is also a bypass risk. For example, BBC’s TV recovery uses a remote control reset without the old PIN, so the lock cannot replace supervision.

BBC iPlayer Safety Settings and Why They Matter

Turn off episode autoplay

Automatic playback can continue a series or start a recommendation.

  • In browser playback, select the Settings cog and uncheck Autoplay.
  • In mobile playback, tap the top right Settings cog and switch off the autoplay toggle.
  • On TV, select Settings, then Autoplay, and choose your preferred options.
  • Test the end of a programme in the child’s actual profile.

Why it matters: Therefore, a stopping point supports viewing plans. Browser cookies can affect whether the preference is remembered.

Review trailer autoplay

The current iOS app also automatically plays trailers on programme pages.

  • Open the app’s Settings.
  • Turn off the trailer autoplay choice when displayed.
  • Return to a programme page and check that a preview does not start.

Why it matters: In practice, trailers can show adult themes before viewing begins. Therefore, review previews separately from episode autoplay.

Reduce personalised features

Personalisation changes recommendations and viewing conveniences.

  • Sign in to your BBC account and open account settings.
  • Turn off Allow Personalisation.
  • If the change is delayed, sign out and back in on your devices.

Why it matters: As a result, this changes recommendations and cross device resume. However, it does not delete the account or stop all necessary data processing.

Remove Continue watching items

The viewing list is separate from an account’s complete retained data.

  • On the website, select Manage full list beside Continue watching.
  • Select X Remove beside an episode and confirm Yes.
  • On TV, select View all at the end of the row, then Manage full list. Select Remove and confirm.
  • To clear the whole mobile list, select the homepage Settings cog and Clear watch history. Use web or TV for individual items.
  • Refresh or reopen the app to see account wide changes.

Why it matters: For this reason, this reduces accidental discovery of an adult’s unfinished viewing. It does not replace a child profile or guidance lock.

Review search history and app measurement

Search records and performance measurement differ from personalisation.

  • Open the app’s Search screen and select Clear History.
  • Open app Settings and opt out of optional performance cookies if unwanted.
  • Review website cookie preferences separately. Retest the browser lock after removing stored data.

Why it matters: Therefore, privacy choices can reduce optional data use. However, deleting local settings can also remove remembered protection.

Remove an unused child profile

Profile deletion is managed through the linked adult’s browser account.

  • Open the adult BBC account settings in a browser.
  • Select Children’s settings, then Delete child profiles.
  • Choose the profile and select Delete only when ready.
  • If it remains visible on TV, select it to refresh the account.

Why it matters: In practice, a profile and a child account are different. Removing a profile does not establish that all BBC account information has been erased.

BBC iPlayer Safety Settings for Family Viewing

Choose programmes together and discuss warnings before pressing play. For younger children, watch nearby and agree how to stop something upsetting. For teenagers, discuss realistic drama, news and the difference between an edited story and everyday life.

Test each child profile, guidance lock and autoplay preference. Afterwards, repeat checks following reinstalls, storage clearing or device changes. Downloads and casting need their own review because another screen can expose a different viewing route.

Use subtitles, signed programmes or audio description where available. Confirm that your chosen programme supports the accessibility option the family needs. Also agree a stopping time before a series begins.

BBC iPlayer Parental Controls, Safety Advice and Current Concerns

A familiar broadcaster can still carry adult drama, disturbing news and unsuitable previews. A child may also move from a programme to discussions or external videos. Treat wider web access and a separate BBC child account as different permission decisions.

Autoplay choices support a viewing routine but do not enforce a daily allowance. Therefore, use suitable device restrictions when a limit must be enforced. Recovery routes can reset parental protection, so retain adult supervision.

If a programme upsets a child, pause it and listen without blame. Use official BBC support for programme and technical concerns. For threats or coercion encountered elsewhere, stop contact, keep relevant details and seek safeguarding support.

Platform Support and Regional Differences

BBC iPlayer is restricted to UK residents. Northern Ireland is within that territory, while the Republic of Ireland is outside it. Receiving a BBC channel through a television package does not provide eligibility for iPlayer.

Eligible UK viewers can download programmes to mobile devices before overseas travel, subject to availability and expiry. This differs from streaming abroad. Review official UK TV licensing requirements before viewing BBC iPlayer, including catch up programmes.

BBC iPlayer Safety Settings Checklist

First, review these choices together. Then revisit them after an account or device change.

  • Confirm UK eligibility and the TV licensing requirements.
  • Create an accurate under 13 child profile.
  • Set browser, mobile and television locks separately.
  • Enable the mobile Profile switching lock.
  • Keep recovery details private and retest after resets.
  • Turn off unwanted episode and trailer autoplay.
  • Review personalisation, search history and app measurement.
  • Agree viewing times and review downloads.

BBC iPlayer Safety Settings Questions

Is there a separate BBC iPlayer Kids app?

No. The current children’s experience is inside the normal BBC iPlayer app or website.

Is an age tailored homepage a strict age filter?

It changes the homepage recommendations. However, parents should still assess individual programmes within the wider children’s catalogue.

Does my phone’s PIN protect the TV?

No. Television protection is device specific, and the browser has its own local settings.

Explore TV and Movie Streaming Services for other viewing services. For wider guidance, visit Resources for Parents and Useful Links and Supports.
