Animal Crossing: New Horizons safety settings help parents review the island life game where players decorate homes, collect items and spend time with animal neighbours. Creative play appeals to children, but online visits, shared designs and communication introduce contact with real people.
For young people, shared activities can offer enjoyment, creativity and belonging. However, conversations, spending and pressure to keep playing need separate attention. This guide explains the documented protections, their limitations and practical family choices.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
Nintendo’s official game listing shows PEGI 3. This classification describes game content, rather than every player’s behaviour. Online visits, designs and conversations still need supervision. Therefore, review the child’s account, friends and access separately.
This guide covers Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Online play requires the relevant membership. Switch 2 Edition adds features including CameraPlay and larger sessions, so do not assume the original game’s communication advice covers it.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Parental Controls
Create the adult Nintendo Account first
For a new family setup, the adult needs their own Nintendo Account. First, use the correct country and birth date. This account differs from a console user profile.
- Open Nintendo Account on a browser and select Create a Nintendo Account. Choose the adult age option.
- Complete the account details, including the adult’s email, a unique password, birth date, country and time zone.
- Review the Nintendo Account Agreement and Nintendo Account Privacy Policy. If agreeing, select their boxes and choose Continue.
- Enter the emailed code in Verification code and choose Verify.
Why it matters: The adult should control the inbox and recovery details. In addition, protect this account before using it to administer children or payments.
Animal Crossing parental controls for a Nintendo child account
Next, create the child within the family group. An administrator aged 18 or older must add a child aged 15 or under. Follow the provider’s regional age prompts.
- Sign in to the adult administrator’s Nintendo Account. Open Family group.
- Choose Add a member, or Create family group if this is the first member. Select Create a child account.
- Complete the child details shown, including Nickname, Child account Sign-In ID and Child account password. Use the child’s real age when prompted.
- Review the agreement and privacy notice. If agreeing, select their boxes, choose Continue, then OK.
Why it matters: Family membership alone does not configure every protection. Therefore, separately link console parental controls, restrict purchases and review GameChat permissions. Avoid using the adult login for the child’s play.
Protect the adult Nintendo Account with verification
For the adult account, Nintendo offers two step verification. First, keep access to the adult’s email and phone secure. Some child accounts cannot use this option.
- Sign in at Nintendo Account. Open Sign-in and security settings, 2-Step Verification and Edit.
- Choose 2-Step Verification setup and complete the identity checks offered for the account.
- Next, install Google Authenticator on the adult’s phone and use it to scan Nintendo’s displayed QR code.
- Enter its six digit code on the Nintendo Account page and choose Submit. Copy the backup codes into private storage.
- Finally, choose I have saved the backup codes, then OK.
Why it matters: Backup codes help if the phone becomes unavailable. However, this option excludes child accounts subject to the provider’s parental consent rules. Protect the supervising account rather than changing a child’s age.
Recover a forgotten Nintendo child password
For a child password, the parent uses their own account. Nintendo cannot display the old password. Therefore, verify the correct child before replacing it.
- Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account and open Family Group. Select the child.
- Next, choose Sign-In and Security Settings, then Change Password. Enter the parent account password when requested.
- Enter the child’s new password and complete the displayed confirmation. Store the new details privately.
Why it matters: If the child is absent, check which adult account manages that family group. In addition, keep account recovery separate from the console’s parental control PIN.
Link the Nintendo parental controls app
First, install the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the adult’s phone. Use an adult Nintendo Account and an internet connection.
- Open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, select Start and Next, then choose the usage data option.
- Choose Sign In/Create Account, sign in and select Select this person. Choose Next to display the registration code.
- On the console, open HOME Menu, System Settings, Parental Controls and Parental Controls Settings.
- Select If You’ve Already Downloaded the App. Enter the displayed registration code, choose OK, then Link and confirm on both devices.
Regional labels can differ. For a Switch 2 console matching Nintendo’s Americas guide, use these labels instead:
- Confirm Select this account in the phone app and choose Next to display its Link Code.
- On Switch 2, open HOME Menu, System Settings and Parental Controls. Choose Set Up Parental Controls, then App Has Been Installed.
- If restrictions already exist, choose Change Settings, enter the PIN and select Set up in the (free) Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, then App Has Been Installed.
- Enter the six digit Link Code, select OK and Link, then confirm OK on both devices.
Why it matters: Console restrictions apply across users. However, GameChat approval and account purchase restrictions need separate review. Unlinking the app removes its console restrictions.
Animal Crossing New Horizons parental controls for time and bedtime
Next, select the correct linked console in the parent app. Save the game before stopping play.
- Open Parental Controls, then Play Time Limit. Set the allowance and Bedtime.
- Enable Suspend Software at Set Time for an enforced stop. Otherwise, the limit only displays a reminder.
- Select Save. Keep the console online so it receives changes.
Why it matters: The allowance covers the console rather than one game or child. Therefore, agree how siblings share it and keep the parent PIN private.
Animal Crossing New Horizons parental controls for software ratings
For content restrictions, choose the rating system used in your region. These settings apply across console users.
- Open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls on the adult’s phone and choose the linked console.
- Open Parental Controls, Restricted Features and Custom.
- Set Content Rating System and Restricted Software for the child. Choose Save and keep the console online.
Why it matters: A software rating cannot assess live conversation. Therefore, keep the separate communication and GameChat restrictions as well.
Review Nintendo safelist exceptions
Next, check games that bypass normal software restrictions. An old exception can outlast the reason you originally allowed it.
- In the parent app, choose the console and open Parental Controls, then Safelist.
- Remove any game exception you no longer want, then choose Save. Recheck the restrictions after the console connects.
Why it matters: Safelisted software can run without the parent PIN. However, daily play time limits still apply. Do not add exceptions simply to silence a permission request.
Protect Nintendo parental controls with a private PIN
Similarly, keep the PIN separate from codes the child knows. Once the app is linked, change the console PIN through that app.
- Open the adult’s Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and select the console.
- Choose Parental Controls, Parental Controls PIN and Change beside the current PIN.
- Enter a new four to eight digit PIN, choose Confirm and Save. Keep the console online to receive it.
Why it matters: Someone who knows the PIN can weaken restrictions. Therefore, enter it privately and protect access to the parent’s phone and Nintendo Account.
Find a forgotten Nintendo parental control PIN
First, try the linked parent app. This avoids a reset. The parental control PIN is separate from Nintendo Account credentials and other console PINs.
- Open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls on the adult’s phone. If several consoles appear, use the upper left menu to choose the correct one.
- Select Parental Controls, then Parental Controls PIN. Nintendo’s Americas guide writes the last label as Parental-Controls PIN.
- Read the displayed PIN privately. If it is no longer secret, use the separate Change instructions above and allow the console to sync.
Why it matters: Recovering the existing PIN preserves the current setup. Therefore, protect the parent phone and avoid displaying the code where the child can see it.
Use Nintendo support if the parent app is unavailable
For Ireland and the UK, use Nintendo’s documented recovery route for the correct console. A reset can affect protection, so keep children off the console until you have reviewed restrictions.
- Open Nintendo’s Switch 2 forgotten PIN guide or original Switch forgotten PIN guide. Choose the branch matching app linking and access to the parent phone.
- On the console, select the Parental Controls icon on the HOME Menu. For a linked console without app access, Nintendo directs six incorrect four digit entries before Help.
- Press the plus Button or minus Button for Help when the guide directs. Find Forgot PIN and note the enquiry number. Keep that screen open because leaving changes the number.
- Use Nintendo’s official PIN reset tool and follow its current checks. The European tool requires an adult aged 18 or over and a European Nintendo Account linked to the console. Contact Nintendo through the guide if ineligible.
- After recovery, review console restrictions and app linking before the child plays. Restore any missing restrictions and check GameChat permissions separately.
Why it matters: Nintendo warns that an original Switch PIN reset can unlink the app and delete app history and restrictions. Therefore, review the consequences before proceeding.
Animal Crossing New Horizons safety settings for communication
In addition, review communication separately from the game’s age rating. Do not assume a low classification filters conversations.
- In the parent app, choose the console, Parental Controls, Restricted Features and Custom.
- Set Free Communication With Others to Restricted. Review the available game exceptions, then select Save.
Why it matters: This restricts supported game communication. However, it does not replace Switch 2 GameChat permissions or controls for a separate phone chat app.
Restrict Nintendo purchases and renewals
For purchases, use the supervised child’s Nintendo Account family settings. The phone app’s play limit does not establish a spending limit.
- Sign in to the adult’s Nintendo Account and open Family Group.
- Choose the supervised child. Tick Spending Restrictions to block purchases and automatic renewal options.
- Also review Age-Based Purchase Restrictions, then choose Save changes.
Why it matters: These controls cover the child’s Nintendo checkout. Separately check existing subscriptions, an adult account’s payments and purchases from another seller.
Animal Crossing safety settings for Nintendo renewals
For Animal Crossing safety settings, review the account that bought the membership. Other family members cannot change its renewal.
- Sign in to the purchasing account at Nintendo Account. Choose Nintendo Switch Online.
- Under Valid Memberships, select the membership. Choose Terminate automatic renewal, then select it again to confirm.
Why it matters: Check the expiry date and cancel before the renewal deadline. However, stopping renewal does not refund an existing charge. Membership features end when the paid term expires.
Query a Nintendo purchase with the right seller
Next, find the receipt and distinguish a mistaken purchase from an unknown charge. Nintendo’s published policy excludes refunds for simple mistaken purchases or dislike of a downloaded game.
- Check the buying Nintendo Account, receipt, order reference and payment method. Review Nintendo’s purchase policy.
- For an unexplained Nintendo charge or delivery problem, use Nintendo customer support and provide the relevant order details privately. For another retailer, contact that seller.
Why it matters: Refund approval depends on the circumstances. Therefore, keep purchase restrictions in place rather than assuming an accidental digital order can be reversed.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Safety Settings
Animal Crossing safety settings for visitors
For planned online visits, keep the code within the agreed group. The airport opens after the first day of play.
- At the Airport, speak with Orville. Choose I want visitors and Via online play.
- Select Roger!, then Invite via Dodo Code. Share the five character code privately with the intended visitors.
Why it matters: A recipient can pass on a code. Therefore, stay involved and check arrivals. Local wireless codes and online codes differ.
Animal Crossing parental controls for visits
Next, stop additional arrivals after the expected visitors join. Closing the gate and ending the session perform different jobs.
- Return to Orville at the Airport and choose Please close the gate to prevent new arrivals.
- To send visitors home, press the minus Button and choose End session.
- As a visitor, speak to Orville at the host’s Airport and select I want to go home.
Why it matters: Closing the gate leaves current visitors present. If contact becomes uncomfortable, end the session and review friends rather than only hiding the code.
Remove Animal Crossing Best Friends privileges
Best Friends receive extra access during visits. Therefore, review this list separately from ordinary Nintendo friends. The official starter guide documents the following controls.
- Press the ZL Button to open NookPhone, then open Best Friends List. The app becomes available through multiplayer setup.
- Select the relevant player with the A Button and choose Quit being best friends.
- To stop sharing online status through this app, press the minus Button and disable its online feature.
Why it matters: Removing this status differs from blocking the person. In addition, do not grant extra privileges simply because someone offers a trade or gift.
Animal Crossing safety settings for dream address privacy
An uploaded dream lets others explore a saved copy of the island. However, hiding its address on a passport or map does not revoke a code someone already knows.
- At home, lie on a bed and choose Yeah, I want to sleep. Speak with Luna.
- Choose About the dream I shared…, then Adjust Dream Address privacy. Hide the address from the passport and map.
- To remove the uploaded dream entirely, return to About the dream I shared… and choose Delete the dream. Review the prompt before confirming.
Why it matters: Anyone with a working Dream Address can visit that uploaded copy. Therefore, remove private details from island content before sharing. Dream visitors cannot alter the real island, but can take displayed custom designs.
Leave or report an Animal Crossing dream
For a troubling dream visit, leave promptly. Ordinary dreams differ from the newer multiplayer Slumber Islands.
- To leave normally, return to the bed in the plaza and lie down.
- To report during the dream, press the minus Button and choose Report. Alternatively, speak to Luna and choose Report dream.
- Select the relevant concern and follow the reason prompts. After reporting, the game returns the player to their own bed.
Why it matters: A report requests moderation rather than immediate protection from all shared content. Consequently, help the child stop viewing the material and discuss what happened.
Animal Crossing safety settings for Slumber Islands
Similarly, review the separate Slumber Island invitation. A Dodo Code does not control this newer feature.
- On your Slumber Island, speak to Luna and select Invite Others. Choose the compatible session type.
- Choose Invite via Doze Code and share that code privately.
- After the expected guests join, speak to Luna and select Check my host status, then Suspend the invitation.
Why it matters: Suspending invitations prevents new guests. However, a shared code can circulate before you close access, so supervise the guest list.
Animal Crossing safety settings for chat reports
For harmful chat, report the content itself. For disruptive behaviour, use the active session’s player report.
- For a message, open NookPhone, then Chat Log and select the relevant entry.
- Press the minus Button and select Report. Select the content again if prompted.
- Choose the reason, Next, add useful details and select Report.
- For behaviour during an online session, press the minus Button and select Report, then complete the same reason prompts.
Why it matters: Reporting asks Nintendo to review the concern. In addition, block unwanted users and review the code or friend access that allowed the visit.
Animal Crossing safety settings for content reports
User designs, letters and names can contain inappropriate material despite the gentle game setting.
- Open the offending letter or bulletin board post. For a shop design, select its column and row.
- For a design terminal, locate the design using its user ID or design ID. For an online player profile, press the minus Button and choose View another’s passport.
- Select the content, press the minus Button and choose Report. Select the reason, Next, details and Report.
Why it matters: A report cannot guarantee instant removal. Therefore, help the child stop viewing distressing content instead of repeatedly opening it.
On Switch 2, GameChat adds voice, video and screen sharing independently of the game. Under 16s and supervised users need parent setup. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership now applies. Nintendo also requires phone verification through the appropriate adult account.
Review NookLink communication separately
NookLink connects the game with the Nintendo Switch App on a phone. It includes keyboard chat and Best Friends communication. Therefore, review the phone as well as the console.
- To identify the connection, start the game and press the minus Button on its title screen. Open NookLink settings.
- On the phone, open Nintendo Switch App and check the Nintendo Account. Under Game-Specific Services, choose Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
- Review Best Friends and keyboard use together. Avoid enabling a phone connection the family does not need.
Why it matters: This review does not create a parent lock inside NookLink. In addition, use the phone’s app restrictions when access needs to stop.
Check Nintendo Switch App voice chat
Separately, eligible Nintendo Switch Online members aged 13 or older can use phone voice chat with compatible online play. This differs from Switch 2 GameChat.
- Open Nintendo Switch App and check that it uses the same Nintendo Account as the game.
- During compatible online multiplayer, find Smart Device Voice Chat near the bottom of the phone app’s main page.
- Review this before anyone selects Start. If voice chat is unsuitable, do not join and restrict phone app access as needed.
Why it matters: Other eligible players can join the lobby as they enter the online game. Therefore, a familiar host does not establish that every voice participant is known.
Stop Animal Crossing CameraPlay video
Switch 2 Edition can start CameraPlay after its prompt when online visitors arrive and a compatible camera and GameChat are in use. Therefore, review it before opening visits.
- During the visit, press the minus Button to open the game menu.
- Select Stop camera video to hide the CameraPlay feed in the game. The same menu offers Show camera video to restore it.
- For the child’s broader video permission, also use the separate Using Video Chat parent setting below.
Why it matters: Hiding the feed inside this game is not the same as ending all GameChat video. In addition, disconnect a camera that the family does not need.
Block an unwanted player on the original Switch
For an original Switch, use the child’s own profile. First, check the game and session details so you identify the correct player.
- From HOME Menu, select the child’s user icon, My Page, then Add Friend.
- Choose Search for Users You Played With and select the relevant person.
- Choose Block, then Block again to confirm.
Why it matters: Nintendo warns that matching restrictions may not apply to every game or mode. Therefore, also review Best Friends, codes and active visits. Blocking does not itself submit a report.
Animal Crossing parental controls for a new console user
First, distinguish a console user from the Nintendo child account already created above. Use the child’s identity rather than the adult’s login.
- On Switch 2, open HOME Menu, System Settings, Users and Add User. Choose Sign In to a Nintendo Account.
- Sign in with the child’s existing Nintendo Account. Check its identity and confirm OK after sign in and user creation.
- On original Switch, choose Add User, Next, an icon and nickname, then OK twice. Select Sign In and Link, verify the child and choose Link, then OK.
Why it matters: A new user does not apply every account restriction. Therefore, check supervision and parental controls separately. Transfer an existing user and save when appropriate instead of creating a duplicate.
Link the child’s Nintendo Account to their console user
Next, use the child’s existing console user. Create the Nintendo child account through the family group first. This link differs from pairing the console with the parent app.
- Open HOME Menu, System Settings and User. Select the child’s console user.
- Choose Sign in to a Nintendo Account or Link to a Nintendo Account. Sign in with the child’s account.
- Check the identity carefully before choosing Link. Select OK after confirmation.
Why it matters: Nintendo says the linked account cannot later be changed for that user. Therefore, do not connect the adult’s identity to the child’s save by mistake.
Check Nintendo family roles before GameChat
Similarly, confirm supervision separately from creating the family group. GameChat for under 16s requires the parental controls app.
- Sign in as the family administrator and open Family group. Select the adult account and use Set as parent/guardian if needed. This role requires an adult aged 18 or older.
- Check whether the child already shows Supervised. If not, select the child and choose Set as supervised account, then OK.
- For an account requiring email acceptance, have its owner open Nintendo’s verification link, sign in and choose Accept. Recheck that the family group shows Supervised.
Why it matters: Some child accounts receive supervision automatically. However, an ordinary family member does not automatically have every parent permission. Review the actual roles.
Register the adult’s Nintendo phone for GameChat
For the UK and Ireland route, register the adult’s own number. The child’s account has separate eligibility limits. First, keep the phone available for the text message.
- In the adult’s Nintendo Account, open Sign-In and Security Settings, then Phone Number. On a computer, choose Edit beside that section.
- Complete the requested password, passkey, email or verification check. Next, select the phone number’s country and enter the number.
- Choose Submit. Enter the text message’s six digit code in Verification code and complete the verification prompt.
Why it matters: The code expires after ten minutes. In addition, the selected country and number must support Nintendo’s registration process. Do not register a stranger’s number or send anyone the code.
Complete GameChat setup with the child
After linking the console, child user and family roles, complete the parent and child setup together. First, confirm the correct user and an active membership.
- In Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, open GameChat, select Next and Set Parental Controls. The Americas guide labels the last option Set Up Parental Controls.
- Select the supervised child and verify the adult’s registered phone number using its text code. Review the terms and choose I Agree only if agreeing.
- On Switch 2, press the C Button, choose the child’s user and complete the connection test. Choose Start, then Next, and review the information.
- Review Consent to GameChat Data Processing and its consent box in the UK guide, or GameChat Terms in the Americas guide. Continue only if agreeing.
- Next, choose Select Friends and Request Approval, select the agreed friends, Next, Send Request and OK. Review each request in the parent app using the approval instructions below.
- Finally, return to the console, choose Next and read each reminder with the child. Select I Understand after reviewing it.
Why it matters: The other person also needs the relevant approval. Therefore, start with people the family knows and review the separate camera permissions before any video session.
Approve or withdraw a GameChat friend
First, discuss who each friend actually is. An approved gaming friend does not automatically need voice or camera access.
- For a child’s request, press the C Button, select their user, Settings and Chat-Approval Requests. Select the friend and Send.
- On the adult’s phone, open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, GameChat, the child and New chat-approval requests.
- Review the person, decide whether to approve and add a note if approving. Select Finish and OK.
- To withdraw later, open GameChat, the child and the friend. Choose Withdraw GameChat Permission, then Withdraw Permission.
Why it matters: With no approved friends, the supervised child cannot invite or join others through GameChat. Both players need the required approvals.
Review GameChat camera requests
Similarly, choose whether the child can use GameChat video at all. The parent can require a fresh request for each session instead. These choices concern Switch 2 GameChat.
- Open Nintendo Switch Parental Controls on the adult’s phone and select the linked Switch 2 console.
- Choose Parental Controls, then GameChat. Select the child and the three dots beside their username.
- Open Using Video Chat. Choose to disallow video entirely or require permission for each chat session.
- If allowing a session, review its request notification. During video, open Play Activity, then Video Chat to review the field of view and choose Save. Withdraw the current session’s permission if needed.
Why it matters: Camera restrictions do not prevent gameplay screen sharing or local CameraPlay. Therefore, keep personal details off shared screens and disconnect an unused USB camera.
Block a player on Nintendo Switch 2
For unwanted contact, use the child’s own console profile. A report and a block perform different jobs.
- Open the child’s My Page user icon on HOME Menu. Choose Add Friend.
- Choose Search for Users You Played With. Identify the correct person using the game and session details.
- Choose Block, then Block again.
Why it matters: Blocking prevents friend requests and shared GameChat rooms with that account. However, matching restrictions may not cover every game or mode. Another account or service can also allow contact.
Report harmful GameChat contact
For abuse during a chat, report the relevant user without asking the child to remain in the conversation.
- Press the C Button, select the user and Report. Choose Leave Chat and Report, then OK.
- Select the concern. If reviewing evidence, choose Next, select the relevant 30 seconds and choose OK.
- Enter the reason, choose Next, then Submit Report and OK. Use Block if needed.
Why it matters: Nintendo can include the preceding three minutes of recorded audio and video. However, a child need not watch upsetting evidence. Follow the skip option when appropriate.
Protect the Animal Crossing island backup
Animal Crossing uses its own island backup rather than ordinary Save Data Cloud. It needs internet, current software and an eligible resident’s active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Open the game as the resident enabling backup. At the title screen, press the minus Button, then choose Island backup and Enable island backup.
- Check the last backup time on the title screen. Leave the console online while the game is not in use for periodic backups.
Why it matters: One resident enables backup for the shared island. Therefore, check this before a console is lost. Another resident cannot enable a second backup independently.
Animal Crossing safety settings for island recovery
For loss or damage, contact Nintendo through its island recovery guidance. If the original console still works, use its transfer instructions instead.
- If Nintendo directs the serviced console restore route, use the account that enabled backup. As the opening Nintendo logo fades to black, hold the minus Button. Choose Begin.
- Choose Check, select the correct island, Recover Data and Yes, please only after reviewing what will be replaced.
Why it matters: Recovery needs an existing backup. However, replacing a new island loses that island. Do not delete a current island merely to test recovery.
Remove game data only when intended
For a deliberate reset, distinguish removing software from deleting a save. Neither action is a substitute for reporting harm or cancelling billing.
- Open HOME Menu, System Settings, Data Management and Delete Save Data. Enter the parent PIN if requested.
- Select the game and the correct user, if offered. Review any Delete All Save Data for this Software option carefully. Choose Delete Save Data only if intending the permanent removal.
Why it matters: Animal Crossing shares island data across residents. Therefore, a whole island deletion affects everyone. It does not itself close the Nintendo Account or cancel membership.
End game contact and GameChat separately
For an uncomfortable session, help the child leave promptly. Returning to Free Roam or closing a game does not establish that the separate GameChat has ended.
- To leave GameChat, press the C Button to open the C Menu. Select the red Leave Chat icon.
- To stop the game session, save normal progress when safe. Press the HOME Button, highlight the game, press the X Button or choose Close Software, then confirm Close.
- Disconnect an unused USB camera. Before resuming, review the separate friend and video permissions above.
Why it matters: This gives a clear way to stop participation without guessing a room exit label. In addition, leaving does not block the person or report their behaviour.
How to Use Animal Crossing New Horizons Safely
For island visits, agree who may enter before opening access. Keep school names, addresses and regular schedules out of island names, messages and designs. In addition, review Best Friends access with the child and avoid unfamiliar trading groups or offers that require passwords, payment or secret contact.
For parents, ask your child to show you a normal session. Review who joins, what they enjoy and what makes stopping difficult. In addition, practise leaving an uncomfortable interaction without arguing or explaining personal details.
Similarly, agree that an online friendship never requires secrecy, private photographs, money or contact through another app. A familiar username or impressive score does not prove someone’s age or identity. Keep school, home address and daily routines out of profiles and conversations.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
However, Animal Crossing: New Horizons safety settings cannot judge another person’s intentions. Social pressure, sexual comments, threats and requests for private contact deserve attention even when a player seems friendly. Ask about behaviour rather than judging trust from an avatar, status badge or shared interests.
If someone threatens or sexually pressures a child, stay calm and listen. Stop contact, preserve relevant nonsexual messages where safe and use reporting tools. Do not download or forward sexual images of children. Reassure the child that asking for help will not get them into trouble.
In Ireland, contact An Garda Síochána about suspected grooming or exploitation. In an emergency, call 112 or 999. CODA education and website guidance do not replace an urgent safeguarding response.
For families, protect sleep, schoolwork, meals and time away from screens. Agree spending before opening the shop, and review pressure from limited offers or other players. If play repeatedly causes distress, discuss the pattern together and seek suitable support.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
Nintendo supports the game, console controls and GameChat. On original Switch, separately review any Nintendo Switch App voice use or external phone chat. On Switch 2 Edition, also review GameChat and CameraPlay. Check the installed edition before following a multiplayer route.
For families in Ireland, the UK and the USA, Animal Crossing: New Horizons safety settings can differ by account age, device and rollout. A store rating, account permission and identity check answer different questions. Therefore, inspect the actual child account rather than borrowing an adult login to bypass a restriction.
For billing, start with the seller on the receipt. Check renewal terms, payment methods and refund eligibility through that seller. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription or request a refund. Existing virtual currency can remain spendable after you block new real money purchases.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Safety Settings Checklist
- First, confirm the correct age, account and device.
- Next, review friends, group access and any external messaging apps.
- In addition, check spending and time controls on every device used.
- Practise leaving, muting and reporting together.
- Finally, revisit Animal Crossing: New Horizons safety settings after updates or changes to the account.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Safety Settings Questions
Do these settings guarantee safety?
No. Controls reduce particular risks, but another player can still lie, pressure or upset someone. Therefore, keep regular conversations alongside the settings and help the child seek support early. Never treat an age check as proof of good intentions.
Will one setting cover every device?
No. A child can use a different profile, device or payment service. For example, a phone spending restriction does not establish the same protection on a computer. Review linked accounts and the actual route your child uses to play.
