Apple TV is a streaming subscription viewed through the Apple TV app and website. The app can also include rentals, purchases and other subscriptions. Children may enjoy familiar characters and family stories, while teenagers may follow shared favourites. However, the wider catalogue includes adult material. Apple TV safety settings help parents choose suitable access.
The subscription, app and physical Apple TV 4K box are different things. This guide explains Apple TV safety settings across those viewing routes. Explore them with your child, choose the controls for the actual device and test the result. Settings support family choices, while discussion helps you understand what your child watches and how it affects them.

Age Rating and Child Safety Warning
A managed Kid profile belongs within an adult’s viewing setup. It is different from an Apple Account for a child. In Ireland, a child under 16 cannot create their own Apple Account without parental help and consent. Other countries use different ages.
Choose ratings for the child’s needs. A programme rating describes content, while an app store rating describes the app. Neither guarantees suitable viewing. Therefore, use Apple TV safety settings alongside title checks and conversation.
Apple may request adult confirmation in particular countries or account situations. Its current instructions describe card or identity document methods in specified regions. Do not assume every Irish viewer must complete those checks. A verified adult account does not prove who is using the television.
Restrictions Available
Apple TV parental controls depend on the viewing route. Set each relevant profile, app and device control separately.
Start parental controls with a managed Kid profile
For example, a managed profile can give a child their own viewing space without a separate Apple Account.
- Sign in to the TV app with the adult’s Apple Account. Open the sidebar, then Settings, Profiles and Add New Profile.
- Then choose Create Profile, enter a name and choose an image.
- On Finish Profile, select Kid. Accept suitable restrictions or choose Customize for movies, TV ratings, purchases and rentals.
- Finally, if shown, choose the adult under Managed By. Select Done.
Why it matters: However, the managing adult can access profile playback and search data. However, this is different from a Family Sharing Child Account and does not restrict other television apps.
Set profile content and purchase restrictions
Choose suitable access separately for each profile.
- Open the Apple TV app on the television or living room device. Open its sidebar, then Settings and Profiles.
- Choose the profile, then Restrictions. Confirm account details through the requested QR code or browser link.
- Finally, choose limits under Movies and TV Shows. Review Purchases and Rentals and select the appropriate restriction.
Why it matters: Kid profiles narrow content and search results. However, another unlocked profile may offer broader viewing. Test all profiles your child can select.
Protect adult profile access
For example, a profile passcode protects history, recommendations and access.
- Open the Apple TV app on the television or living room device. Open its sidebar, then Settings and Profiles.
- Then choose the adult profile and select Require 4-Digit Code.
- Finally, confirm the account when requested. Enter a four digit code and reenter it. Use Change 4-Digit Code later if needed.
Why it matters: Protect each less restricted profile. The adult account can change the setting, so keep its credentials and trusted devices secure.
Set parental controls for purchases
For example, a purchase password is different from a profile switching code.
- Open the Apple TV app on the television or living room device. Open its sidebar, then Settings and Profiles.
- Choose a profile connected to an Apple Account. Select Purchases, then Always.
Why it matters: For parents, a fifteen minute grace period or no password requirement can leave a spending opportunity. Also, rentals and third party subscriptions are separate from the Apple TV subscription.
Set Apple TV content restrictions on the web
Web restrictions need their own setup.
- Sign in to tv.apple.com using the account to restrict. Select the account icon, then Settings.
- Then under Parental Controls, enable Content Restrictions.
- Finally, create a four digit passcode and give an adult controlled recovery email address. Choose the rating under TV Shows and Movies.
Why it matters: The account’s web preferences persist across browsers. However, they apply only to Apple TV content on the web. Set controls separately on other devices.
Set content restrictions in the Android app
For parents, the Android app provides a local passcode and rating controls.
- Open the Apple TV app and tap the account icon. In Settings, select Content Restrictions.
- Create a four digit passcode and turn Content Restrictions on.
- Finally, choose Movies and TV Shows, then the highest allowed rating or Don’t Allow. Use the Back button to return.
Why it matters: Changes apply immediately in that app. Enter the passcode to change them later. However, these controls are not a household device schedule.
Set Windows app content ratings
Windows uses the TV app’s Restrictions settings.
- Open the Apple TV app on Windows. Select Sidebar Actions, then Settings and Restrictions.
- Then choose the region under Ratings For. Set Movies Rating and TV Shows Rating.
- Finally, select the Lock button and confirm the device permission dialog.
Why it matters: Choose a rating or disallow the category. However, Windows app restrictions do not secure another browser or television.
Set up parental controls with a Child Account
For device management, a child may need their own Apple Account.
- On the adult organiser’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then Family. Set up Family Sharing first if absent.
- Select Add Member, then Create Child Account and Continue.
- Finally, enter the correct name and birthday. Follow the consent and account setup instructions.
Why it matters: In Ireland, children under 16 need parental help and consent for a Child Account. Use a managed TV profile when that meets the viewing need. Never create an adult account with a false birthday.
Set iPhone and iPad content restrictions
Current Apple family controls can restrict films and programmes on the child’s device.
- On the parent’s device, open Settings, then Family and the child’s name.
- Then open Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter the Screen Time passcode when requested.
- Finally, under Content Restrictions, choose the relevant movie or TV category and suitable rating. Review the available disallow and unrated options as well.
Why it matters: Current version 27 family menus differ from older Screen Time menus. Keep all family devices updated and follow the installed version’s official instructions. Test the TV app and browser separately.
Set Mac content restrictions
Mac viewing needs separate system controls.
- Open System Settings, then Screen Time. Choose the child under Family Member when managing family settings.
- Select Content & Privacy and enable it.
- Finally, open Store Restrictions and select the movie and TV ratings. Review App Store, Media, Web, & Games for other access limits.
Why it matters: As a result, this affects the Mac rather than every shared screen. Protect the adult login and review other accounts the child can access.
Require approval with Ask to Buy
Family Sharing can require an adult to approve eligible purchases and downloads.
- On the adult’s current iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then Family and the child’s name.
- Then choose Apps and Websites, then Restrictions, Ask to Buy and enable Require Purchase Approval.
- Finally, when a request arrives, open it, review the item and approve or decline. Approve only a purchase you understand.
Why it matters: Eligibility and age defaults vary. This is not a monetary budget, and not every transaction generates a request. Keep purchase authentication enabled as well.
Set Apple TV 4K device restrictions
For parents, the physical Apple TV box has additional device protections.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings, then General and Restrictions.
- Turn restrictions on, enter a four digit passcode and verify it.
- Review the available purchasing and rental controls, in app purchases, movies, TV shows, apps, explicit music and podcasts. Choose the appropriate protections.
- Also review Game Center multiplayer, friends and privacy changes, plus changes to AirPlay, TV Provider and location. Keep less restricted profile bypass permissions blocked.
Why it matters: Device restrictions and TV app profile restrictions are distinct. Third party apps may require their own controls. Test the current television rather than assuming the device PIN covers everything.
Apple TV Safety Settings and Why They Matter
Turn off continuous and background playback
Autoplay has several separate controls.
- On a television or living room device, open the Apple TV app’s sidebar, then Settings.
- Then turn Play Next Episode and Play a Recommendation off. Turn Autoplay Video Sound off if preferred.
- On Apple TV 4K, the equivalent app settings are under device Settings, Apps and TV.
Why it matters: Sound off does not stop every background image. Also, a child can start more viewing manually. Pair these choices with a routine or device limit.
Review privacy settings for viewing history
For parents, the TV app uses viewing information for recommendations.
- In the TV app on a living room device, open sidebar, then Settings. Turn Use Play History off if preferred.
- Choose Clear Search History or Clear Play History only when you intend to remove those records.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings, Apps, then TV. Review Connect to TV and disconnect unwanted content sharing from other apps.
Why it matters: Clearing play history can remove Continue Watching information across devices. However, it does not block titles or erase all retained account data.
Review location and analytics privacy settings
Optional app data sharing is separate from content restrictions.
- In the TV app on a living room device, open sidebar, then Settings.
- Then review Location and Share Apple TV App Analytics. Turn unwanted optional sharing off.
Why it matters: Location can determine available content. Analytics off reduces that optional sharing rather than all service processing. The device has its own privacy settings too.
Review Apple TV 4K privacy settings
For parents, the box can provide app access to sensors and household information.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings, then General and Privacy & Security.
- Review Location Services, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, Camera, Apple Home and Media & Apple Music. Remove unnecessary permissions for each app.
- Open Tracking. Turn unwanted app permissions off and set Allow Apps to Ask to Track off if preferred.
Why it matters: Choose permissions for the features your family actually uses. However, restricting tracking does not remove all service data collection or stop another device’s microphone.
Choose device analytics and Siri recordings
Optional improvement sharing can include voice interactions.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings, General, then Privacy & Security. Find Analytics and Improvements.
- Then turn unwanted Share Apple TV Analytics, Share with App Developers and Improve Siri & Dictation sharing off.
- Separately, open Settings, General and Siri. Review Siri, Listen for “Hey Siri” on AirPods and Use with Ask Siri.
- To remove associated voice history, select Siri & Dictation History and follow its deletion confirmation.
Why it matters: Siri availability depends on hardware, language and region. Optional recording sharing and history deletion have different effects. Do not share private information unnecessarily with a voice assistant.
Limit who can stream through AirPlay
Casting can bring content from another device onto the shared screen.
- On Apple TV, open Settings, then AirPlay and HomeKit.
- Choose the appropriate access option, such as Only People Sharing This Home or Anyone on the Same Network.
- Enable Require Password if preferred and keep it with the adult.
Why it matters: Anyone on the network can still include guests or other devices. Therefore, test casting access separately from the TV app’s profile controls.
Add a family viewing schedule and allowance
Current family schedules can limit device use beyond autoplay.
- For version 27 family controls, open the parent’s Settings, then Family and the child.
- Then select Time Allowances, then Add. Choose the categories and adjust the time. Review Match Screen Time Schedule when using schedules.
- Open Screen Time Schedule, enable Schedule and select Add Schedule. Choose days and the allowed app categories in each time window.
Why it matters: These features require compatible updated family devices and protected parental settings. They do not automatically limit a shared television. Check Always Allowed apps and test the actual block.
Remove unsuitable offline downloads
Review offline viewing on every shared mobile device.
- On Android, open the TV app’s Downloads tab, select Edit, choose the items and tap the Delete icon.
- Alternatively, press and hold a downloaded item and choose Remove Download.
- On other supported devices, inspect their downloaded library and use the download removal control. Test the child’s offline access after rating changes.
Why it matters: Download support and labels differ by device and title. Removing a download stops that offline copy, rather than blocking a title or cancelling a subscription.
Manage child profile access
For example, a managed profile contains personal viewing information.
- Open the Apple TV app on the television or living room device. Open its sidebar, then Settings and Profiles.
- Then choose the managed profile. Review Show on This Device if you want to hide it on this screen.
- For permanent removal, choose Delete Profile and confirm through the managing adult’s Apple Account.
Why it matters: Hiding is device specific, while deletion affects devices associated with the managing account. Neither cancels the main subscription. Adult profile upgrades require the managing account’s action.
Protect the Apple Account and trusted devices
Account security protects parental settings and purchased content.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, the account name and Sign-In & Security. Review Two-Factor Authentication and enable it if absent.
- Follow setup with a trusted phone number and verification. Keep recovery access current.
- Under Settings and the account name, inspect the device list. Select an unfamiliar device and Remove from Account.
Why it matters: Most accounts already use two factor authentication. However, an already signed in shared screen can still provide access. Sign out of unused TV app profiles and keep the adult device locked.
Cancel billing and request data or deletion
Stopping a subscription differs from deleting an Apple Account.
- On iPhone, open Settings, the account name and Subscriptions. Choose the subscription and Cancel Subscription. Check the confirmation.
- Then for Google Play or other provider billing, cancel through that billing provider. Deleting the app does not stop charges.
- For a data copy, correction, deactivation or deletion, sign in to Apple’s Data and Privacy page. Choose the intended request and follow verification.
Why it matters: Account deletion can affect purchases, iCloud and other Apple services. Save needed information first. Cancel a viewing subscription instead when that is the only goal.
How to Use Apple TV Safely
Choose programmes together, read their ratings and make it easy to stop. For example, talk about frightening scenes, violence or sexual themes before choosing a title. Apple TV safety settings support those choices.
Next, agree viewing times and stopping points. Check downloaded titles, other profiles and casting routes. The subscription itself does not create an enforced daily allowance across every television.
Finally, update device software and apps. Review Siri and other AI features separately on a child’s phone, rather than assuming a TV rating blocks them. Camera and microphone controls matter where the hardware supports calls, recording or voice interaction.
Essential Safety Advice and Current Concerns
Apple TV safety settings cannot prevent fake receipts or account support scams. Open the genuine app or Apple support site yourself. Never give an unexpected caller a password, verification code or remote access.
Live programmes, recommendations and previews may contain unexpected themes. Also, SharePlay uses separate communication services. Check those contact and privacy controls before a child watches with others. Do not pressure a child to continue upsetting material.
For a title, purchase or account issue, use Apple Support. Describe the title, profile and device. Use Useful Links and Supports for wider family support.
Platform Support and Regional Differences
This guide checks Apple TV safety settings against current official app and device documentation. New managed profiles, codes and version 27 family menus may be absent on older devices. Confirm the installed version before following a route.
Web restrictions apply to web viewing. Android, Windows, Mac, iPhone and living room apps use different controls. Apple TV 4K adds device restrictions, but third party apps can require separate setup.
Controls do not require a separate paid parental safety product. Viewing still needs the relevant subscription or purchase. Sports, catalogue content and third party subscriptions differ by region. Captions and audio descriptions help understanding, rather than making adult content suitable.
Safety Checklist
After changing Apple TV safety settings, check each viewing route with your child.
- Create a managed Kid profile or appropriate Child Account setup.
- Set movie and TV limits and protect every adult profile.
- Require purchase authentication and enable eligible Ask to Buy approval.
- Set web, mobile and television protections separately.
- Review autoplay, downloads, casting, privacy and trusted devices.
- Confirm the billing provider and test the family schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the subscription the same as the Apple TV box?
No. The service can be watched on many devices.
Why it matters: However, the box’s device restrictions are an additional layer. Use the controls for the actual app and screen.
Do web restrictions cover the Android app?
No. Web restrictions cover Apple TV web content.
Why it matters: Set the Android app’s restrictions separately and test both routes.
Does a managed profile need its own Apple Account?
No. A managing adult can create a separate managed viewing profile.
Why it matters: Family Sharing and device management may instead require a Child Account. These setups serve different purposes.
